TO THE CLASS OF 1967

A class? No, not just a class, but more of a preview of what Optometry is to look like in the years to come. A dynamic group, a bundle of energy being harnessed and channeled in the right direc­ tion by some skilled and experi­ enced hands.

This group changes like the wind. Quiet and attentive one min­ ute, noisy and blustering the next.

Always seeking however, an idea, a way, an explanation. Very rare­ ly was it ever in accord. Differ­ ences were voiced loud and often.

Unity, when required, was its hall­ mark.

Although there is a separation of academic years between us, and although each of us approaches the problems of Optometry with methods as varying as our personalities, the goal of each of us is singular. To combine our personal goals with the goals of Optometry may at times be difficult, but with the basics which you have acquired, from which we will gain, should make any conflicts only minor detours.

As we could only hope for ourselves, we wish you a happy awakening!

You have made the choice and have but the founda­ tion from which you can expand and grow to an extent only your individual consciouses can guide you. During the past four years you have acquired the beginnings of the knowledge and the attitudes which will enable you to serve as a leader in the community, and as one with the capacity to see new directions.

We, the class of 1969, as the last class to pursue the same OD program that you have completed, are just beginning to feel the necessity to cultivate this knowl­ edge, and discover, and to cultivate the professional attitudes to their fullest extent. The Optometric Forum, founded in 1962 by members of the school. It is its mam endeavor to supplement Optometric education by presenting a series of lectures from some of the most noted men in the field. ^ Topics discussed throughout the year were many and varied and included Hypnosis, Military Optometry, Cataract Surgery, Ophthalmic Dispensing with Ralph Drew and Laser Refraction by Henry Knoll. , The Forum saluted past chairmen David Sheinkoff and Allen Klibano offers its grateful thanks to other 4th year members, Oscar Reynosa, Bob Gold, Jack Roberts, Neil Coules, Art Baker, Ron Millman, Fred Blank and present chairman Mar­ vin Pachman for his outstanding job during the past year.

This year the Massachusetts College of Optometry gained a new publication and organization with a concept unique from the past organizations of the school.

In January 1966, the Student Council voted on a bill to establish an organization that would have a direct educational value to the students of MCO. After the bill was passed, Dave Ferris appointed Mike Newman to investigate and form such an organization.

The constitution was drawn up and ratified by the student council, and accepted by Dean Kamens during the late summer months.

The objectives of ACUITY are: 1. To broaden Optometric interest and education through a publication that will review events in Optometric art and science not fully covered in the Optometric educational program.

2. To review present new advances in Optometric art and science.

3. To foster scholastic excellence and professional character and to inspire its members to service and leadership dedicated to the advancement of Optometry.

Unlike most new organizations which start out at a slow pace, ACUITY pushed ahead under the Chairmanship of Mike Newman, and published four issues this year. Each issue showed a healthy trend of being better and bigger than the one before it.

Articles this year have included such interesting topics as: Hypnosis in Optometry, Ocular Pros­ thetics, Hydrophilic Contact Lenses, Keratoplasty, Accommodative-Convergence Relationships, Lens Effectivity, Fiber Optics, New Vision Training Procedures, Industrial Vision, and others.

ACUITY has been accepted by the students as a new source of information on a student level and the enthusiasm of the student body will keep ACUITY a strong and growing organization.
