A fte r doing a creditable job as clinic director, Dr. Kamens moved to the position of Dean of the College in the Spring of 1965. We the Class of 1966 are the first to graduate from the Massachusetts College of Optom­ etry under his direction. We have found Dean Kamens not only a fine dean but an inspiring instructor and friend of the student.

DEAN’S MESSAGE It is a pleasure for me to express my best wishes to the members of the Class of 1966. As Dean, I hope th at all of you as professional men take your rightful place in your com­ munity as an integral part of its public health structure. You are pre­ pared and qualified to render serv­ ices of the highest order in the health field.

W hether you go into the military service or go into private practice, you are equipped with the tools to render a total service. Take advan­ tage of the many highly specialized areas in which you have received instructions, nam ely; vision training and orthoptics, visual field study; and contact lens fitting.

I would like to express my most sincere appreciation to every mem­ ber of the Class of 1966 for making my duties both as a teacher and ad­ m inistrator stimulating and inspir­ ing. The cooperation and encourage­ ment which was given to me by the entire class helped make my “learn­ ing” period much easier. I hope that each member of the Class of 1966 will feel free to ask for my assistance if needed because I am most inter­ ested in all of you.

As Dr. Otto Hochstadt has often said it is not an easy task to find instructors for a professional school. In this respect the administration has done a fine job at the College of Optometry. It is with this in mind th at we would like to say a special “thanks” to the men who have served as the Faculty for many years.

The graduate leaves the college with the knowledge of a professional man — an optometrist only because this Faculty has been there in previous days, months, and years to lecture, instruct and give their guidance.

Case ’66; A Loose Relationship As freshmen, we first heard the question, “Mass. College of Optometry ?

Where’s th a t? ” The usual explanation sounded like “Y’know the Exeter Theatre? . . . And the big church across Newbury Street? . . . And the old rectory next to the church? . . . Well, th at’s not a rectory, th a t’s the College.” Our first year also presented other questions: What happened to the cats’ tails in zoology lab? When I ask a girl to a dance called the “Eyeball” what do I say when she says, “You’re kidding!” ? What ended the first and last inter-fraternity party at the Vendome? And how come we were put on absence probation just for extending spring vacation an­ other week?

The sophomore year brought many new faces. Jack McCann felt much younger after he met Bob Titelbaum and Ted Edmonds; he even smiled!

Chuck Idelson taught everybody how to take blood pressure. Who’s that little man in the butcher’s coat, anyhow? Chet Twarowski lost a frog somewhere and John Archibald kept the boys supplied with fresh eggs.

Matt Garston organized the Breakfast Club and even invited Dr. Wasserman to join.

Our junior year was a wild and hectic preparation for the clinical prac­ tice of the fourth year. We began the first of two years with “the Prince” and der last of zwei mit “der dictator”. Tony Molinari began “educating” Archie and Lou Zglobicki. Bob Blanchard began reading Birth of A Nation. We survived the year by having a little faith during T.O. and passing our state board practicals every week in M.O. Our senior year brought many changes, a new dean, a modernized clinic, a new registrar, and someone to teach graphical analysis to Bruce Kirn.

Joe Glennon fell off a refracting stool during th at first nervous examina­ tion. Marty Kaplan became an expert on keratometry, Jim Georgis a con­ tact lens expert, and Paul Hey man an authority on everything. We found th at there were still some things which Barry Meyer just didn’t under­ stand. “Super Senior” Shaw surprised everybody by turning the Clinic over to Doctor Svagdys and going to class. Matt Elgart kept on turning the plateau spiral the wrong way. Marty Shuman took off enough time fishing with Louie to get engaged. The church next door was torn down but “. . . how come they left the rectory ?”

Student Council The Student Council is responsible for student affairs and the administering of financial assistance to student activities such as fraternities, clubs, and the major social event of the year, the “Eyeball.”

EYEBALL

Once a year the Student Council arranges for the major social event of the year “The Eyeball.” This event has grown from a late evening dance to a full evening of dinner, dancing, and entertainment for the wives and girl friends of the students at the college.

The “66 Eyeball” was ably directed by a junior, which has become the custom, Paul Weissberg.

The growing popularity of this dinner dance is in evidence by the large majority of students, faculty and guests who attended the “66 Eyeball.”

Pi Omicron Sigma, the oldest professional optometric fraternity in the country is the only local fraternity at the college. For many years, it was the only fraternity on campus and provided students with an informal at­ mosphere for fellowship and discussion. To­ day, POS continues to give its members an opportunity for leadership and democratic action.

Four years go by quickly! As we prepare ourselves to embark on our professional field of endeavor, we look back at more than our

books and classes. We recall the social life, the activities, and most of all, we recall the many friends we have made.

Many of these memories will center around P.O.S., for it is here th at we have made most of our close bonds. These memories are the smoker, poverty party, banquet, bowling night and other impromptu gatherings.

Fraternity life is a wonderful thing, and an education in itself. We drink a toast to P.O.S. now, as we have done in the past and will continue to do in the future.

OMEGA EPSILON PH I FRA TE R N ITY Zeta Chapter of Omega Epsilon Phi, Inter­ national Optometric Fraternity, is one of eight chapters located in optometric colleges throughout the United States, An additional chapter is located in the Philippine Islands.

Omega Epsilon Phi originated in 1920 when the need was realized for an organization th at would “transcend the bounds of race, color, and creed to promote the cause of Optometry by encouraging the study of its principles and problems and by striving for higher ethical and educational stan d ard s within the profession”.

In 1947, Zeta Chapter at the Massachusetts College of Optometry was founded and to maintain contacts after graduation the Zeta Graduate Club was also founded.

The Brotherhood presents the Joseph J. Scanlon Award annually at commencement exercises to the member of the graduating class who has demonstrated the highest de­ gree of proficiency in his clinical work.

M. C. O. D AM ES CL UB As stated in the Constitution adopted by the MCO Dames Club, October, 1965, the objectives of the MCO Dames Club shall be “To make wives more aware of their place in their husbands’ chosen field of Optometry.

It shall also be our purpose to promote friendships among student optom­ etry wives.”

Among the activities participated in during the year was a cake sale, decoration of the luncheon for the American Optometric Association Con­ vention, which was held at the Sheraton Boston Hotel, and a tour of the American Optical Laboratory in Brighton.

Some of the social activities included a welcoming tea at the home of Mrs. Foster Namias, the club’s advisor, a Halloween party, Alumni Home­ coming at which the Dames were hostesses, and a luncheon at the home of Mrs. Carol Edmunds, club president, at which Senior PHT (Putting Husband Through) degrees were awarded by Mrs. Namias.

A careful and detailed pre-examination case history is taken by Clinician B. Meyer prior to the refraction.

The clinic is the place where the underclassmen put into practice the theoretical optometry they have learned in the classroom and the seniors learn the professional art of patient handling.

Each senior is required to cover the clinic, as scheduled, in refraction, visual training, and contact lenses.

The clinic is the place where the optometic student is turned into the professional optometrist as the clinician becomes aware of the demands and needs of visual assistance of his patients.

The recording of the patient’s visual acuity, here taken by Clinician J Georgis, is the first step in the routine refractive procedure.

Clinician W. Goldberg employs a peniight to investigate the excursions of the eyes and the pupillary reflexes.

Clinician B. Kirn employs the cover test as an objective means of the determination of the relative posture of the two eyes.

Clinician C. Gruning conducts a careful ophthalmoscopic examination of the interior of the eye to ascertain the health of the eye.

The keratometer, here employed by Clinician J. Abraham, measures the curvature and amount of astigmatism of the cornea.

Clinician L. Shaw uses the retinascope to objectively determine the re­ fractive error of the eye.
