Despite our diverse b ack grou n d s and philosophies, we c a m e t o g e t h e r to form N E W E N C O 'S class o f 1989.

The site of our training would be in beautiful Back Bay, where so much was to be experienced culturally, historically and education­ ally, We were to enjoy the grandeur of Boston.

It became our home and whether we were aware of it or not, our time here would permanently affect many of our lives, opinions and out­ looks.

We spent many nights in pre-clinic during our first year in preparation for our proficiency test­ ing and "real patients."

G r a d u a l l y our knowledge basis and clinical experience be­ gan to grow. Before we knew it, w e were in­ terns at various sites throughout the world, b e i n g only m o n t h s away from graduating.

And now we have complet­ ed our four-year journey and are about to venture into the "real world." We must now utilize that which we have learned and con­ tinue to build upon it, to grow personally and profes­ sionally. We learned much and established lasting re­ lationships in the hallowed halls of NEWENCO. But we are not to look upon our graduation as the end.

As Sir Winston Churchill said, "This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

VALEDICTORY ADDRESS 1989

Good afternoon friends, family, and faculty. Welcome to grad­ uation '89! It has been said that graduation is the hiatus between academics and real life. I disagree, I think that it is all real life and this has been four years of real life that we are darn glad are over. We have all been looking forward to this day for a long J time. At times it seemed like it would never come. We have our families and friends to thankfqr their financial and emotional support. We have our teachers to,thank, without whom none of us would be here today. ' I personally would like,tb give special thanks to my husband, David, who supported m eon many levels throughout my school­ ing. As a dentist, David served as rerriindef of many of optome­ try's good points; no spit, no blood, and no needles. Even when you don't compare it to dentistry, I think we have all found optometry to be enjoyable and rewarding. And just think, soon we will be getting paid for it. How that's excitihgl I wonder what each of us Will be doing in the years to come.

Optometry has never been more broad in its scope of practice.

There are many settings in which to work and many areas of emphasis. There will be yisibn therapyspeeialists among us and there will be retinaf disease specialists.. Optometry is in a very dynamic phase of its existence. Within just the past'few years we've seen the passage of a law allowing optometrists the use of diagnostic drugs in this state. A Massachusettstherapeutic drug law will be soon tp follow as it has already in over twenty other states. The message in thisiS that our education is over only in the formal sense. Throughout our working lives we will be { challenged to keep abreast of new developments in optometry. But before we look to the future, I'd like to take a moment to look back to where it all began. , . ... .

My first exposure to this school was as a patient at the Boston Eye Clinic. 1was examined by several students and their ' many preceptors. Hours upon Hours and many visits later I was delivered a pair of new contact lenses. Strangely enough, I was very impressed with the time spent and the care delivered. This demonstrates an important point. It is the quality of patient care that is important to us as optometrists, but it is the perception of the quality,that is important to the patient. I read a recent editorial in the AO.A Journal in which the following situation is described: Along time contact lens wearer walks into the optometrists office and describes her problem to the doctor. Based upon her history and a quick look with the slit lamp he is able to make his diagnosis and suggest the recommended treatment - no contact lens wear for 2 weeks followed by a refit. This doctor realized that discontinuation of lehs wear is not something we contact lens wearers take lightly. So instead of presenting her with the facts immediately, he proceeded with a full battery of optometric testing, including perimetry, tonometry, and ophthalmoscopy. He followed that with an in depth discussion of his results. Hot only had he provided a through and comprehensive exam, but now the patient had the confidence in this doctor to accept his diagnosis^ and to proceed with the recommended treatment. As the author said, I ime spi nl j is perceived as concern." Five years ago at the Boston Eye Clinic I'm sure that those extra hours o f exam were not added in order to impress me,but I was impressed. The experience served as a catalyst in ray desire for a career change.

A year later, there I was in classroom four where we all first met. We were nurses and pt's and teachers among others, all there to begin the slow and often painful metamorphosis into optometrists.

Of note is the fact that we were the first class to be more than 50% female. More and more women have realized that optometry is an ideal profession to combine with family life. ' ; , , , „I Much has transpired in the time between that first day and now. The, first three years seemed like a constant steam or midterms and finals - with a few classes and labs thrown in between. Through these years we developed the fine art or taking multiple choice tests. "If in doubt, choose B". It always worked for me. At this point, I'd like to put in a word ofii thanks to the organizers and contributors to our note taking service. They sure made my life easier. Ttlis past year, we got a taste of what optometry is really about, the fourth year clinical program at HEWEHCO is deserving of praise. Our experiences were varied and full. In combination with academics, I think we all had the exposure and preparation that with experience will make us optometrists this school can be proud of.

Oftentimes we volunteer and accept projects that we know require lots of time and hard work, but only realize the actual commitment, dedication and volume of work involved when we begin the task. This statement is certainly true in relation to the work involved in the publication of this yearbook. The preparation, organi­ zation, laying out of pages and raising of funds for this yearbook, even became more difficult, when we realized that our rotations demanded that we be out of Boston at varying intervals. Thus the factor of geographic locations entered the equation.

The real challenge though was in coordinating our efforts cross country, since we never had the pleasure of working together as a full team in Boston. The challenge became even greater after graduation, when we each went our sepa­ rate ways. The coordination of our efforts then became an international task as staff members were scattered throughout the U.S., and one co-editor was in Atlanta while the other was in the Bahamas.

But despite these factors and numerous other obstacles, we all knew that dedication and hard work would win out and our yearbook would be completed.

Our challenges and difficulties were many but we succeeded despite the inad­ equate funding, shortage of art work and delays in mailing of pages and proofs just to name a few.

It is at this time that we the co-editors would like to extend our deep and heartfelt thanks to the members of the yearbook staff. Al Beaulieu, Eva Grin­ baum, Mabeel Khudairi and Eva Wang, thank you for all your hard work and dedication. Even though at times it appeared that we had an insurmountable task, and it seemed that our work would never be completed, you all persevered and got the jo b done.

We would also like to say a special thank you to all those persons who made this effort worthwhile with their photographs, poetry, comic strips, art work, written articles and any other invaluable contributions that may have been over­ looked including moral support. Again we say thanks because without your assistance this book would not be what it is today.
