Shift Impact Africa

Elevating Business through ESG and Shared Value Principles

Shift Impact Africa Group operates as a leading pan-African group of companies specialising in advisory, business development, strategy, advocacy and training implementation, all anchored in the principles of creating shared value. We assist organisations in harnessing the potential of shared value by adeptly addressing material constraints that inhibit optimal profitability. Our expertise spans a gamut of services: from high-level advisory to detailed execution planning. We excel in identifying sustainability and ESG gaps, ensuring that our clients achieve both profit and societal impact.

Our ethos centres on the tenet of ‘profit with purpose.’ We assert that businesses can simultaneously generate economic returns and societal and environmental value. For example, by addressing persistent social challenges such as enhancing access to medicines, fostering employment, pioneering eco-friendly agricultural methods, or championing environmental solutions like plastic recycling and renewable energy adoption, businesses can craft strategies that yield value across all stakeholder spectra.

Underpinning our approach are the principles and disciplines of Shared Value. We present companies with pioneering avenues to innovate, compete, and cultivate a business milieu that is profitable, influential, and sustainable.

In 2018, we championed the creation of the Shared Value Africa Initiative (SVAI), purposed to amplify the Shared Value Business Management ethos, recognising it as pivotal for sustainable solutions to societal and environmental quandaries. Following this, 2021 saw the inauguration of the Shared Value Africa Academy (SVAA) – an institution committed to imparting shared value education to business leaders and budding entrepreneurs. Moreover, in 2020, in collaboration with SVAI, we spearheaded the GBVF #ITSNOTOK movement, a testament to our dedication to promote Gender Equality and promoting gender equality and combating gender-based violence. In 2023 the Shift Impact Africa Group created the African Institute for Competitiveness with the goal to provide data and information that can assist with people centric policy change and policy making to create a better life for all.

Examples of Our Work

JamiiTrade

JamiiTrade is a curated peer-to-peer platform for SMEs in Africa and beyond, created by Shift Impact Africa and the Shared Value Africa Initiative (SVAI). It was developed after research by international students revealed gaps in accessible trade information for SMEs and young entrepreneurs, leading to a lack of knowledge about cross-border and international trade opportunities. JamiiTrade aims to bridge this information gap, particularly regarding the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), empowering young business leaders to confidently expand into new markets. The platform’s beta phase was launched in March 2024.

World Skills Africa (WSAfrica)

In 2023 and 2024, Shift Impact Africa was commissioned by AUDA-NEPAD to create, develop and assist with the launch of World Skills Africa (WSAfrica) at the Heads of State meeting in Addis Ababa in February 2024. WSAfrica is an initiative of the AU and World Skills International with AUDA-NEPAD responsible for the implementation. It is a groundbreaking initiative that aims to leverage skills for Africa’s development by emphasising vocational training through Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and fostering innovation and skills development. This initiative seeks to drive sustainable development that is socially, economically, and environmentally responsible. Its mission is to establish itself as the regional hub for empowering member states to enhance the alignment between skills development and industry needs. This is achieved through the exchange of best practices, benchmarking, and peer learning.

USADF LMS System

In 2022, the Shared Value Africa Initiative (SVAI) was commissioned by the USAF to create a Learning Management System (LMS) for young entrepreneurs, using Visa Practical Business Skills training programs. This LMS offers a comprehensive suite of learning programs designed to enhance entrepreneurs’ skills and knowledge, enabling them to build more resilient and sustainable businesses. The pilot phase of this project is set to launch in May 2024 in Kenya and Senegal, providing a valuable resource for entrepreneurs to access essential business education and support. If proof of concept is successful, the system will be rolled out to 17 other countries.

IFC Respect@Work

In 2023, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, in collaboraiton with the Shared Value Africa Initiative, initiated the Respect@Work programme in South Africa . The Shared Value Africa Initiative (SVAI) was honoured to be appointed to collaborate with the IFC team in creating the content and learning materials for this programme as well as provide the training. This initiative aims to assist the private sector in addressing sexual harassment and gender-based violence (GBV) in the workplace. This programme is ongoing and will be rolled out across South Africa with future plans for the rest of Africa.

Positive Masculinity in Leadership to End Violence Against Women and Girls

From 2021-2023, the Shared Value Africa Initiative was invited to collaborated and work with the South African President’s office to convene private sector dialogues in preparation for the annual African Union Men’s Conference on positive masculinity in leadership to end violence against women and girls. Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf pioneered the importance of harnessing male political leadership on the continent as critical to end VAWG and specifically requested the convening of the Men’s Conference. The information and content collected from these dialogues formed the discussion points at the conferences that took place in 2021 in DRC, 2022 in Dakar, Senegal, and 2023 in South Africa.

GIZ SADC GBV Research

GIZ, through a special agreement, appointed Shift Impact Africa in 2023 to provide expert services in developing and creating a ToR for research teams to further the data gathering for the evidencebased approach to align to the PfP Programme. The strategic vision encompasses the promotion of information and knowledge management, fostering the exchange of best practices, and driving innovation in the field of GBV. The aim to achieve these objectives through a rigorous, evidence-based approach, aligning efforts with the output of the PfP Programme.

African Union Men’s Conference on

ESG Exchange

In September 2023, Professor Mervyn King, a distinguished senior counsel, former Judge of the Supreme Court of South Africa, and founding Patron of The Good Governance Academy and The ESG Exchange, extended an invitation to Shift Impact Africa CEO Tiekie Barnard to serve on the ESG Exchange Advisory Council. The ESG Exchange is committed to facilitating access to global thought leadership on pivotal business challenges and fostering collaboration (SDG 17) with worldwide experts to make quality education (SDG 4) readily available for this purpose.

Gender Equality Unit

On International Women’s Day, 8 March 2024, the Shared Value Africa Initiative (SVAI) launched its Gender Equality Unit. This unit is dedicated to advancing gender equality and reducing gender-based violence by supporting and collaborating with both the public and private sectors. It builds on SVAI’s previous work with the #ITSNOTOK campaign, including research and the development of the Gender Equality Implementation Guide. The unit is led by Joy Ruwodo, a gender equality activist and former CEO of the END Fund.
