Dear Nebraska PGA Members & Associates:

I hope everyone is well and working on wrapping up their season event schedules. The weather has been fantastic, and rounds continue to be strong as we work into the Fall season. I have been busy working on the PGA National Scholarship program and going through all the National awards applications, so it’s been rewarding to see all the talent across the country in our PGA membership. We will be meeting as a district in the middle of October with the officers from Minnesota, Nebraska, and Iowa plus national staff to discuss 2022 and what the future looks like in 2023. The national annual meeting will be held in the first week of November down in Arizona and it is an election year. Nathan Charnes, PGA is the only candidate running for office since the other two candidates have dropped out of the race. I had a chance to serve a couple years on the board with Nathan and he will be a great officer for our association if things proceed as planned.

This is the time of the year when things start to slow down it is important to start looking at staff for 2023 and what the team will look like at your facility. I always feel that this is one of the most important decisions made during the offseason to tee things up for success the next year. The board and national staff are working hard on membership recruitment and retention ideas to fill the pipeline of future associates and retain the members we currently have in the association. What can we do help associates complete their education to become a member? Only 29% of enrollees complete the PGA associate program and only 48% complete level 1. Can these associates have better mentoring either locally, nationally or peer to peer? How can we drive higher compensation by educating our employers? We are spending more time during our board meetings discussing these topics and working with the staff to move the needle and enhance our member benefits. Please reach out to Kevin Drew, PGA our newly appointed Career Consultant and he can give you ideas on creating a positive work environment at your facility plus what he is seeing in the field regarding future staff members looking to get into the golf business.

Thank you for allowing me to serve as your District 8 board member and will be looking forward to seeing everyone at the Fall meeting in November. I’d also like to thank David Honnens, PGA and his staff for the incredible work they do for us during the season. David and his staff are so well respected around the country we are very lucky to have them leading us at the Nebraska PGA!

Selling Yourself

How to prepare for your end of year reviews

What Can You Do To Prepare

When preparing for your annual review with your Department Head, General Manager, or Board of Directors, the most important thing to do is be proactive. If you’ve waited until the day of your review to present yourself, or ask for a raise, then you’re already too late. Here are some things that you need to consider when preparing for your year end review:

1. Set a time in advance to meet (2 3 weeks before your scheduled review)

2. List out your accomplishments (sell yourself)

3. Prepare a set of questions to ask

4. Have a plan to ask for what you want (compensation increase, bonus structure, raise)

Be ready to receive feedback

The easiest way to sell yourself is to keep track of accomplishments or programs you have put together throughout the year. A few slides with pictures and information to help refresh the memory during your annual review can go a long way. I recommend that you take time at the end of each month to highlight some of your accomplishments so you are already prepared when your annual review meeting comes up. The more information you have on how you have been an integral part of the facility, the more power you have in your review.

How Can Your Career Consultant Help You Prepare

Your Career Consultant can help provide important information to help you during your annual review. Whether it's checking similar compensation packages in your section or nationally, or compensation based on your current job role(s), we have several useful resources to help prepare you and “sell yourself” when it comes to review time. If you would like assistance or have any questions on how you can prepare for your annual review, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You can book an appointment by visiting my website below.

PGA REACH has awarded scholarships to 17 students at nine colleges through the PGA WORKS Golf Management University Scholarship Program for the 2022 2023 academic school year. The $8,000 scholarships were presented to talented and motivated students from diverse backgrounds who are working toward PGA Membership through one of the 18 accredited PGA Golf Management University Programs across the nation.

PGA WORKS, an initiative designed to evolve the demographic composition of the golf industry’s workforce and the PGA of America’s Membership, leverages fellowships, scholarships, career exploration events and the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship to inspire and engage talent from diverse backgrounds to pursue key employment positions across the golf industry.

These students pursue bachelor’s degrees in a golf industry compatible major, with the ultimate goal of obtaining PGA Membership.

Since its inception in 2018, a total of 47 individuals have earned PGA WORKS Golf Management University scholarships, with a total of $376,000 of overall scholarship support delivered to date.

PGA REACH is proud to award these outstanding students with a PGA WORKS Golf Management University Scholarship, as they pursue their dream of attaining PGA Membership,” said PGA President Jim Richerson.

“These 17 aspiring PGA Members represent the next generation of golf industry leaders, and we are delighted to support their journey.”

Scholarship recipients were selected on the basis of academic record, leadership demonstrated through participation in school and community activities, honors and work experience, a statement of goals and aspirations, unique personal or family circumstances, an outside appraisal, active participation in the game of golf and playing ability.
