Even though the weather was less than desirable, we had over 100 golfers that turned out for the annual PGA REACH Nebraska Pro Am at Champions Run in Omaha, NE. Lunch was provided as well as beverages on the course. Following golf there were heavy hors d’oeuvre and beverages available with a presentation by Boys and Girls club of Omaha regarding Golf N Schools and two of our PGA HOPE veterans spoke about the PGA HOPE program. We raised over $20,000 through sponsorships, silent auction items and donations.

Patriot Award Mike Antonio, PGA Being nominated for the 2017 Patriot Award was pretty special in itself. To win the nomination was a humbling experience and a huge honor, especially being nominated alongside some very special and more deserving people such as Jimmy White and Cliff Yohe. Those two gentlemen deserve a huge round of applause for the work they have done. Jim for all of the money he has raised with his Golf for the Troops pro-am and especially for Cliff Yohe, a man who really is a man for giving his time as a military veteran and who was willing to give the ultimate sacrifice, his life, for this great country of ours. Thanks to both of you for all of your hard work and dedication to the United States military and the veterans.

My father, Anthony Antonio, passed away 11 years ago this past summer. He was a Senior Master Sargent in the Air Force. My father was a good man and spent 25 years of his life serving our country. The military and our country were very important to my dad, that is why I have such a love for doing what I can to help the people who have served and do serve in our military.

I have been involved with the Folds of Honor since their inception. I have been very fortunate enough to be able to solicit funds from the membership here at Happy Hollow Club.

For ten years HHC members have given very generously to this wonderful foundation that helps families of fallen or disabled military veterans with educational scholarships.

The other project that I am involved with is the military pillar of our Nebraska PGA foundation, PGA Hope (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere). Through this program we touch the heart and soul of our military hero’s and their families through golf. We strive to improve their physical, mental and social rehabilitation.

Between those two projects and few miscellaneous items, the awards selection committee found it in their heart to grace me with a very fine honor. More than anything, that award was dedicated to my father and it was made possible by the many fine people that I have surrounded myself with through my career and I can’t thank them enough.

Dear Member, The PGA Financial Assistance Fund Scholarship application will be available Friday, November 16, 2018 on PGA.org. The eligibility requirements to apply are as follows:  



A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4 (unweighted GPA based on a 4.0 scale) is required.

Applicants must be children or grandchildren of a PGA member who is in good standing with the Association (the PGA member may be living or deceased).

All applicants must be enrolled as or plan to enroll as a full-time student to be eligible.

The supporting documents are:   

An official school transcript must be sent in by the high school or college.

ACT and/or SAT scores must be sent in by ACT or the College Board.

(Test scores are not applicable to college students) The first page of the Student Aid Report (SAR) if the student is applying for financial need 10

Overview Each PGA LEAD Class is comprised of up to 15 PGA Members who participate in a specialized leadership development experience that is tailored to meet the needs of the participants. The program welcomes PGA Members who are early on in their leadership development experience, as well as those who are more seasoned.

Programming includes the following areas of focus:  Board Governance  Conducting Effective Board and Membership Meetings  Pillars of Leadership  Developing Your Leadership Presence  Public Speaking and Presentation Essentials  Social Media and Developing Your Digital Brand  Personal Branding and Promotion  Diversity & Inclusion  StrengthsFinder® and Fascination Advantage® Through PGA LEAD, participants have a unique opportunity to engage in leadership and networking activities, and to develop their leadership acumen with the support of PGA of America executives and staff, as well as business leaders inside and outside the golf industry.

Annually, PGA LEAD participants gather in person at Association functions, such as the PGA Merchandise Show and the PGA Annual Meeting to witness leadership in action and personally connect with each other, industry colleagues, and further develop their professional networks. (Travel-related expenses to at least one function annually are reimbursed by the Association.) PGA LEAD participants also convene monthly via video conference.

Eligibility & Application While PGA LEAD is designed to drive a diverse demographic of participants (with consideration to the following protected classes - gender, age, race/color, national origin/ancestry, sexual orientation, disability and veteran status) the program is open to all Class A Members.

PGA Members who meet the following criteria are encouraged to apply for one of up to 15 slots in the 20192020 Class of PGA LEAD. Please note that PGA of America National Staff is not eligible to apply for PGA LEAD.    

Class A PGA Member for at least one year and in good standing Aspires to serve in a national volunteer leadership role within the Association Is committed to actively participating in monthly video conferences and related assignments Is committed to participating in PGA LEAD for two years (2019-2020), including PGA LEAD activities at the PGA Merchandise Show and/or PGA Annual Meeting during the program term.  Is committed to making a PGA LEAD presentation at a PGA Section Meeting at the conclusion of the program as an inspiration to others.

The application deadline for PGA LEAD 2019-2020 is November 16, 2018. All submissions are confidential and will be reviewed only by the PGA LEAD Selection Committee. To apply, click here.

October Update—David Schneider, PGA District 8 Director There is so much to share at the local, district, and national PGA of America.

District 8 Fall Meeting of Officers This past October 8th and 9th, the Nebraska PGA hosted all the officers and Executive Directors of District 8 which included Minnesota and the Iowa PGA sections. We had a great meeting which was comprised of; Section updates, goal sharing, challenges, successes, best practices and then, most of all, increasing our camaraderie among sections (Beyond Golf simulators). We all believe that we are stronger as a collaborative group.

PGA of America – Accounting Challenges - Apologies One of the key items discussed at our District 8 meeting was related to the National PGA accounting challenges directly impacting the sections. More specifically, there have been admitted shortcomings the past few years with timing of services and communications with the sections that have been greatly exacerbated with the announcement and potential move to Frisco, Texas. There has been a high number of staff departures with a low backfill rate all related to the uncertainty of the move.

Effective a few weeks ago, a large portion of the uncertainty was removed (announcement of the planned hybrid model of headquarters in both locations) thus the “repair and maintenance” of rebuilding the accounting staff has begun. These are topics we have talked directly with our executive staff at the national level and they have assured us that they have it as a priority. Here at the local level, if you have experienced an “accounting” frustration, please do not take it out on the Nebraska staff. I can definitively state they are working overtime, nights and weekends, with national to try and rectify each time there is a challenge. As a National PGA member, I apologize on behalf of all of us.

Although it might take some time, it will get better.

Fall Section Meetings in District 8 The fall section meeting tour in the District has begun. On October 22nd the Minnesota PGA conducted their meeting at Golden Valley Country Club. There were over 150 in attendance even though the weather was great in the Twin Cities and golf was being played at everyone’s courses.

The Iowa section is hosting their meeting in Riverside, Iowa just south of Iowa City October 28th – 30th. They augment their Fall Meeting attendance by incorporating a merchandise show combined with education the day before. Then the Nebraska PGA hosts our Fall meeting on Monday the 12th at Champions Run in Omaha. We hope to see you there.

Annual PGA Meeting of the delegates – Nov 6th – 9th – Palm Desert, CA There are several items on the docket for the 102nd annual meeting of our association with national officer elections being one of the headliners. Other key items will be; the introduction of our CEO, Seth Waugh, Palm Beach and Frisco Headquarters update, the rules of golf changes that are upon us, American Development Model, and updates on what the national PGA is doing to assist in Growing the Game and Serving the Member.

Thank you to all and let’s hope for an extended golf season in the next 30 days to blow our budgets out of the water.

Continuing with the series of “Now & Then” articles comparing the Rules as they currently exist with the Rules that will come into effect on January 1, 2019, here is another quiz to test your knowledge of the forthcoming Rules.

For each of the following statements, answer “Now” if you believe that the statement applies only to the current Rules; answer “Then” if you believe that the statement applies only to the 2019 Rules; answer “Both” if the statement is correct under both versions of the Rules; or answer “Neither” if the statement is not valid under either the “Now” or “Then” Rules.

1. Without penalty, you may pry out an acorn embedded in the putting green and also repair the depression.

2. A player is not permitted to repair a club that he or she damaged by slamming it into the ground.

3. When a player suspects that his or her ball has become cut during play of a hole, the player may mark and lift the ball without penalty to determine if it is unfit for play. However, before lifting the ball, the player must announce his or her intention to lift and give his or her opponent, marker or fellowcompetitor an opportunity to examine the ball and observe the lifting and replacement.

4. A Local Rule must be adopted in order to prohibit the use of distancemeasuring devices.

5. If a player accidentally steps on and moves his or her ball while searching for it in the rough, he or she will incur a one-stroke penalty and must replace the ball.

6.When your ball is in a bunker, you may remove a loose impediment that is in the same bunker without penalty.

7. A Local Rule must first be adopted by the Committee before a player may take relief on the opposite side of a lateral body of water equidistant from the hole.

Currently, Rule 16-1c [Repair of Hole Plugs, Ball Marks and Other Damage] limits the player to repairing only old hole plugs or damage to the putting green caused by the impact of a ball. See also Decision 16-1a/7 [Player Repairs Depression on Line of Putt Created When Partially Embedded Acorn Removed]. Forthcoming Rule 13.1c(2) [Improvements Allowed on Putting Green: Repair of Damage] states, in part, “A player may repair damage on the putting green without penalty by taking reasonable actions to restore the putting green as nearly as possible to its original condition….” This Rule includes “Embedded objects (such as a stone, acorn or tee)” as examples of “damage on the putting green.”

Currently, Rule 4-3a [Damaged Clubs: Repair and Replacement: Damage in Normal Course of Play] allows a player to repair a damaged club if it was damaged in the normal course of play. But Decision 4-3/1 [Meaning of Damage Sustained in “Normal Course of Play”] points out that intentionally striking the ground with a club other than during a stroke, practice swing or practice stroke is an act that is not in the normal course of play. Forthcoming Rule 4.1a(2) [Use or Repair of Club Damaged During Round] allows a player to repair a conforming club if it is “damaged during a round.” This Rule states, in part, “”Damaged during a round” means when the club’s performance characteristics are changed because of any act during the round … whether …[b]y the player (such as making a stroke or practice swing with the club, putting it in or taking it out of a golf bag, dropping or leaning on it, or throwing or abusing it ….”

Current Rule 5-3 [Ball Unfit for Play] requires that the player announce his intention to lift and give his or her opponent, marker or fellow-competitor the opportunity to examine the ball and observe the lifting and replacement of the ball. Forthcoming Rule 4.2c [Ball Becomes Cut or Cracked While Playing Hole] does away with this requirement!

The Note to current Rule 14-3 [Artificial Devices and Unusual Equipment; Abnormal Use of Equipment] states, “The Committee may make a Local Rule allowing players to use a distance-measuring device.” Opposite to this, forthcoming Rule 4.3a(1) [Allowed and Prohibited Uses of Equipment: Distance and Directional Information] points out that the Committee may adopt a Local Rule prohibiting the use of distance-measuring devices.

Per current Rule 12-1 [Seeing Ball; Searching for Ball], a player is subject to penalty under Rule 182 [Ball at Rest Moved by Player …] if he or she accidentally moves the ball while searching for it in the rough. Per forthcoming Rule 7.4 [Ball Accidentally Moved in Trying to Find or Identify It], there is no penalty if the player’s ball is accidentally moved by the player, opponent or anyone else while trying to find or identify it!

Currently, Rule 13-4 [Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions] prohibits the player from touching or moving a loose impediment lying in or touching the hazard when the player’s ball is in the same hazard. On the other hand, forthcoming Rule 15.1a [Removal of Loose Impediment] states, in part, “Without penalty, a player may remove a loose impediment anywhere on or off the course, and may do so in any way (such as by using a hand or foot or a club or other equipment).”

Currently, Rule 26-1c(ii) [Relief for Ball in Water Hazard] allows the player to drop a ball within two club-lengths of, and not nearer the hole than, a point on the opposite margin of the water hazard equidistant from the hole. Forthcoming new Rule 17.1d(3) [Relief for Ball in Penalty Area: Lateral Relief (Only for Red Penalty Area)] points out that the Committee may adopt a Local Rule allowing lateral relief on the opposite side of a red penalty area at an equal distance from the hole.
