Don’t Forget the Teen Golfer—By Wade Foreman, PGA In my role as Player Development Supervisor for the City of Lincoln, at the end of my first year I noticed that most of the golf facilities in the area had good Junior Golf Camps/Programs for kid’s ages 5 to 12 year old, but most offered little to no offerings for Teen golfers (kid’s age 12-17 years old). We all know there are some really good teen golfers who play in weekly NJGT tournaments, but what about the inexperienced teen golfer? Or the teen golfer who is trying to make a high school golf team but needs improvement over the summer. With this type of teen golfer in mind for 2016 we created a Teen Golf League at Holmes Golf Course. It was an Eight Week golf league with 45 minutes of PGA Professional golf instruction each week focusing on different aspects of the game of golf. After 45 minutes of teaching we would take the kids to the course, pair them up and play 9 holes using different golf formats. Cost was $99 per teen and we had 17 sign up in the first year. The teens especially enjoyed the weekly practice/instruction, weekly set time for golf and playing 9 holes. The parents enjoyed having a set time each week for their teen to golf and knowing they will get improvement with proper instruction and practice. The teens got in a routine of using the facility on a regular basis and working on their games and improving over the summer. The game of golf is not easy and helping golfers especially young golfers learn and have more fun is what will make them a lifelong golfer in the end. I have helped create player development programs for adults, seniors, teens and juniors. I can tell you no matter what type of facility you work at there is demand for all of these programs and they will help your bottom line come year end.

Matt Shaner, PGA—2015 Bill Strausbaugh Award Reflecting back on the past 5 years, I must count my blessings; four terrific children, a rewarding career in the golf industry, the ability to travel and being an active member of the Nebraska PGA. In 2010 I was awarded by my PGA peers the Jr. Golf Award and was also a two-time recipient of the Bill Strausbaugh award in 2013 and 2015. Without my association in the PGA, I wonder if I would have ever been able to experience such humbling accomplishments. The Nebraska PGA Bill Strausbaugh Award was designed to recognize PGA Professionals by their day-to-day efforts, distinguished themselves by mentoring their fellow PGA Professionals in improving their employment situations and through service to the community. It almost seems unfair to list The Bill Strausbaugh award as one of my recent accomplishments! Some of the most rewarding experiences in my profession is to network with active PGA members and mentor the upcoming professionals. I do what I do because I love the game so much. Evaluating the state of the industry and generating fresh ideas is key to a secure a successful golfing future. Bringing the game to elementary kids, through the Golf in School programs, creating Jr. Golf experiences and taking 5 minutes to help someone with their game makes my heart smile. I truly love being a PGA Professional! Serving my section in different ways has been very rewarding for me. As a member of the Nebraska Golf Foundation Board and Board of Directors, I am proud of the leadership we have right here in our state to propel the game of golf. The Bill Strausbaugh award was established to challenge each and every one of us to make a difference in ourselves, our community and in our industry. Which is why the Bill Strausbaugh award is so very special and unique. All of our section professionals are worthy of this award and I urge all of you to move forward and make a measurable difference in YOUR facility, community, and your section! 6

We know the value PGA Professionals bring their employers through Player Development. We do things such as drive revenue to different areas of the club, increase rounds played by current golfers and even create new golfers. We see it every day but for facility owners, boards, management companies and others not on the front lines it can be hard to see this impact. The PGA of America created a great tool called the Revenue Scorecard which allows you to quantify this value to an extent in a professional report you can share with your employers, use for benchmarking year-to-year or have to keep on file for your resume. We’ve written about and shown you the Revenue Scorecard in the past but this year the PGA of America has overhauled the tool to make it much more user friendly, better looking reports and most noticeably shorter. The Revenue Scorecard is housed on PGA.org and can be completed in less than 10 minutes. You have the capability to customize it to your facility and answer only the questions that relate to your facility type such as private or public. Having tracked player development programming through excel and golf software I would strongly recommend this PGA Member benefit. It is the easiest and most professional way I have found so far and free for use to PGA Professionals and Apprentices such as yourselves. The Revenue Scorecard as well as tips and best practices can be found by CLICKING HERE. If you have any questions or would like additional support in using the Revenue Scorecard please reach out Nebraska PGA’s Player Development Coordinator, Joe Canny, PGA at (402) 730-8364 or jcanny@pgahq.com.
