Welcome

Thank You — from NJGT Director Joe Canny, PGA The 2016 season is now behind us and I wanted to make sure to thank each and every one of you for your participation this year. It was a great season which included record participation, new events, record-low scores and more. This off-season I look forward to working with our facilities, sponsors, parents, juniors and others to find new and fun ways to improve our programming for the 2017 season. For those who have been with the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour going back a few years you have noticed many additions including new courses, updated host sites for the NJGT Championships, updated medals, player gifts, programming and more without raising the cost of any membership or event. This is all thanks to our sponsors. In order to provide these value-added benefits at no extra cost to the juniors we rely heavily on these sponsorships. I am putting together a nice thank you package for these sponsors and would appreciate your help! If you have the ability to send a thank you note to accompany this package I know it would go a long way and be truly appreciated by those to donate their sponsorship dollars to junior golf. USGA Handicap System Q & A Course Handicap™ Explained Q. What does a Course Handicap represent? A. A Course Handicap represents the number of strokes needed to play to the level of a scratch golfer—or the Course Rating™ of a particular set of tees. A Course Handicap is expressed as a whole number (e.g. 12). Course Handicap is determined by using charts located at the golf course where the round is to be played. In addition, a Course Handicap can be calculated by these methods: Course Handicap Calculator: http://www.usga.org/playing/handicaps/calculator/course_handicap_calculator.asp The USGA Handicap System Reference Guide: http://www.usga.org/playing/handicaps/understanding_handicap/Handi_Ref_Manual.pdf Formula: Handicap Index® multiplied by Slope Rating® of tees played, divided by Standard Slope Rating (113) = Answer (rounded to nearest whole number, .4 rounds down and .5 rounds up) Example: 10.4 Handicap Index x 125 Slope Rating / 113 Standard Slope Rating = 11.5 = 12 Course Handicap Please visit Sections 3-3 and 10-4 of the USGA Handicap System manual for further reference.

Tour Tips For many of the golfers on the NJGT the summer tournament season is over and it is time to start the High School or Fall golf tournament schedule. Before a season starts it is important to constantly be checking the fundamentals. These are often areas of focus in the off-season but things can get off during a long season and it is smart to be reviewing the important parts of you swing that set you up for success. A few of our fellow GolfTEC instructors have some great tips for your golf fundamentals. Thomas Howell reviews the grip:

From our team in Australia we have Sam Letourneau talking about proper set-up:

At GolfTEC Omaha we have a team of certified instructors ready to help you improve and keep the great golf going. To learn more about how to improve your game and meet with a Omaha GolfTEC instructor please visit us HERE.

Off-Season Training The off-season is just as important as the regular season when it comes to training. Off-season training is when you can really start to develop a stronger body and gain distance. In the summer months for us we are busy on the golf course and driving range and playing in tournaments. When we play all the time it is hard to focus on strength training so most of the time we exercise to maintain the shape we were in at the start of the season. So this Winter I challenge you to do these exercises and notice that you hit the ball 5 to 15 yards further when you return in the spring for the golf season. Grip Strength 1.) Grab a tennis ball and alternating between hands, squeeze the tennis ball as hard as you can for 4-5 seconds. Do this 4-5 times. This will help your forearm and grip strength. Something that is consistent about long ball hitters is that they have strong forearms and a strong grip. 2.) Grab a towel and twist it as if you are wringing out excess water. The towel wring will strengthen your hands and wrists. Repeat until you get tired. Leg strength 1.) The legs are the foundation for every sport, and golf is no different. Lunges are an easy exercise and all you need is a weight in both hands and step forward with your right leg, then lower yourself down until the right knee is over your right food and the right thigh is parallel with the ground. Now repeat with your left leg forward. Do 8-10 with each leg. 2.) Deadlifts are great for hip stabilization and power development. Form is important here so use a friend and practice good technique. Core 1.) Your core is where you get your stability and in turn means that you can swing harder and still be controlled and balanced. Most of you know what sit ups are, so do these twice during your workout at least until you feel it in your stomach. 2.) Not the most popular workout but bridges are fantastic for golf. They work the core as well as many other important muscles as they relate to golf. Rotation 1.) Getting rotation and a full shoulder turn is a big part of flexibility. The swing functions more properly the more your shoulders and body can move. Sit in a stable chair with no wheels, and hold a golf club across your chest. Rotate your shoulders as far as possible clockwise while keeping your knees together and pointing forward. Alternate between clockwise and counter-clockwise 10 times. These exercises are activities that all skill level golfers perform and continue to do to work and make themselves better. All it takes is a little determination to achieve your goals and become a better player. Ensure you are practicing good form, using a buddy for motivation and support and lastly, have a good time! 19
