Valley, NE –A hot and steamy day welcomed players to the final round of the 2017 Nebraska PGA Junior Championship at the Pines Country Club, Valley, NE. First round leader, Luke Kluver of Norfolk, NE picked up where he left off yesterday with a solid round of two-under-par 70 and sixunder-par 138 total to capture the title. Kluver got off to a hot start with birdies on two of his first three holes and finished his final nine holes at even-par to hold off Trevor Kosch of Humphrey, NE. Kosch played some really good golf and put some pressure on Kluver through 15 holes but some untimely bogeys down the stretch left him finish four back and a second place finish. Another Luke, Luke Gutschewski of Elkhorn, NE also continued his stellar play by posting four-over-par 76 to win the boys 13 to 15 division by 24 strokes. By capturing the overall boys title, Kluver and runner-up, Kosch will have the opportunity to join 144 of the nation’s top male junior golfers in the PGA of America’s premium junior event, the 42nd Boys Junior PGA Championship, hosted at The Country Club of St. Albans in St. Albans, Missouri. The Country Club of St. Albans has consistently been ranked in the Top 10 courses in the state of Missouri by Golf Digest and looks to be a fantastic venue for the event. The Boys Junior PGA Championship will be held from July 31-August 3, 2017. The Boys Junior PGA Championship is where some of the best in the world get their start. Many of today’s PGA Tour professionals made their debut at the Championship. Notable past participants Include: Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Stewart Cink and Phil Mickelson. 10
Valley, NE – A hot and steamy day welcomed players to the final round of the 2017 Nebraska PGA Junior Championship at the Pines Country Club, Valley, NE. Megan Whittaker of Elkhorn, NE took a commanding lead into the final round and although she did not play her best golf she managed to defend her title and capture the 2017 Nebraska Girls Junior PGA Championship. In the girls 13 to 15 division, Lauren Thiele of Wahoo, NE continued her stellar play to capture her age’s division title. But it was the second spot in the 42nd Girls Junior PGA Championship that was up for grabs as Thiele and Hannah Hunke of Snyder, NE went to extra holes to earn the right to compete in this championship. On the third playoff hole Hunke hit her tee shot into the water and this ultimately sealed her fate as Thiele becomes the youngest representative at the age of 13 to represent Nebraska in this championship. Whittaker and Thiele will have the opportunity to join 144 of the nation’s top female junior golfers in the PGA of America’s premium junior event, the 42nd Girls Junior PGA Championship, hosted at The Country Club of St. Albans in St. Albans, Missouri. The Country Club of St. Albans has consistently been ranked in the Top 10 courses in the state of Missouri by Golf Digest and looks to be a fantastic venue for the event. The Girls Junior PGA Championship will be held from July 18-21, 2017. The Girls Junior PGA Championship is where some of the best in the world get their start. Many of today’s LPGA Tour professionals made their debut at the Championship. Notable past participants include: Inbee Park, Lexi Thompson, Cristie Kerr, Grace Park, Michelle Wie, and Dottie Pepper.

2016 Merchandiser of the Year – Private
Don Germer, PGA Head Golf Professional, The Players Club at Deer Creek The Players Club was humbled to be selected as the 2016 Private Club Merchandiser of the Year. It was the second time we were nominated and were excited to come up with a creative way to show off the club/pro shop. Our pro shop is small and that is how the idea came up “little shop, BIG numbers”. The 2015 year for pro shop sales was a record for The Players Club and for my time here. Morgan Halpine, the pro shop manager/buyer and I did not anticipate being able to show any growth for 2016. Nervously, we checked our sales weekly, well almost daily. Feeling the pressure Morgan creatively came up with cool ideas to generate excitement in the shop, to the tune of almost one half million in retail sales. The membership is very supportive of “their” logo. We logo Diet Coke cans, we logo the logo and it sells. The sidebar to the logo is that when I came to the club 7 years ago it was high on my list to create a new logo. After about six months on the job I knew that would be a mistake. As a past winner of the award, decades ago, it has been fun to be around young creative minds with ideas that are not only fun but are the future of sales as and merchandising. — Don Germer, PGA 12

During the 1st round of the European Tour’s 2017 BMW PGA Championship at the Wentworth Golf Club near London, four-time major winner Ernie Els demonstrated the integrity the golfer that puts the game of golf above all other sports. Here’s what happened. Ernie’s second shot to the par-5 12th hole appeared to plug in the grass near a greenside bunker. The applicable Rule was actually a Local Rule modifying Rule 25-2 [Embedded Ball] such that relief could be taken for an embedded ball through the green, rather than just in closely-mown areas. As clarified by Decision 20-1/0.7 [Lifting Ball to Determine Application of Rule], Ernie was permitted to lift his ball, without penalty, to determine if it was embedded, so long as he announced his intention in advance to his fellow-competitor(s), marked the position of his ball before lifting it, did not clean it, and gave his fellow-competitor(s) the opportunity to observe the lifting. Ernie complied with this procedure, but determined that his ball was not embedded. Per Decision 20-1/0.7, “If the ball does not lie in a position from which the player is entitled to relief, or if the player is entitled to relief but decides not to take it, the ball must be replaced, and the … fellow-competitor must be given the opportunity to observe the replacement. If a player who is required to replace the ball fails to do so before making a stroke, he incurs a penalty of … two strokes in stroke play under Rule 20-3a….” Rule 20-3a [Placing and Replacing: By Whom and Where] states, in part, “If a ball to be replaced is placed other than on the spot from which it was lifted or moved, and the error is not corrected as provided in Rule 20-6, the player incurs the general penalty of … two strokes in stroke play ….” After putting his ball back in the grass, Ernie chipped in for an eagle-3! However, Ernie realized that something was not quite right when he played that chip. His ball had come off the clubface much better than he expected given his original lie. Therefore, he went to a Rules Official and explained what had happened. With the Rules Official’s confirmation, Ernie assessed himself a two-stroke penalty for failing to replace his ball. Within a matter of minutes, Ernie’s eagle-3 had become a par-5 on his score card. More importantly though, he reminded everyone of the golfer’s creed of always playing by the Rules. That means playing with honesty and integrity, including calling penalties on oneself. As pointed out under the heading “The Spirit of the Game” in Section 1 Etiquette; Behavior on the Course of the Rule Book, “Golf is played, for the most part, without the supervision of a referee or umpire. The game relies on the integrity of the individual to show consideration for other players and to abide by the Rules.” Here is Ernie’s own account of what happened: “My second shot on the par-5, I pulled it a bit to the left; hit it onto the bank of the bunker, and I thought it was plugged. So, I asked my guys if I could check it. They said, “Yeah.” When I put it back and I hit my chip shot, I just felt uncomfortable by the way the ball came out. The ball came out way too good, you know, so I felt I didn’t quite probably put it exactly where I should have. And (the Rules Officials) explained to me that, you know, under the Rules, you know, you try and put it back to where you think it should be, but I still felt uncomfortable with it, so we took a two-shot penalty, and I feel better about it. The game of golf; it is what it is; and, um, I know deep down that the ball wasn’t quite where it should be, and, you know, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself. So be it. It’s a five and we move
