*Below article highlights older division Valley, NE –A hot and steamy day welcomed players to the final round of the 2017 Nebraska PGA Junior Championship at the Pines Country Club, Valley, NE. First round leader, Luke Kluver of Norfolk, NE picked up where he left off yesterday with a solid round of twounder-par 70 and six-under-par 138 total to capture the title. Kluver got off to a hot start with birdies on two of his first three holes and finished his final nine holes at even-par to hold off Trevor Kosch of Humphrey, NE. Kosch played some really good golf and put some pressure on Kluver through 15 holes but some untimely bogeys down the stretch left him finish four back and a second place finish. Another Luke, Luke Gutschewski of Elkhorn, NE also continued his stellar play by posting four-over-par 76 to win the boys 13 to 15 division by 24 strokes. By capturing the overall boys title, Kluver and runner-up, Kosch will have the opportunity to join 144 of the nation’s top male junior golfers in the PGA of America’s premium junior event, the 42nd Boys Junior PGA Championship, hosted at The Country Club of St. Albans in St. Albans, Missouri. The Country Club of St. Albans has consistently been ranked in the Top 10 courses in the state of Missouri by Golf Digest and looks to be a fantastic venue for the event. The Boys Junior PGA Championship will be held from July 31August 3, 2017. The Boys Junior PGA Championship is where some of the best in the world get their start. Many of today’s PGA Tour professionals made their debut at the Championship. Notable past participants Include: Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Stewart Cink and Phil Mickelson. *Below article highlights the older division Valley, NE – A hot and steamy day welcomed players to the final round of the 2017 Nebraska PGA Junior Championship at the Pines Country Club, Valley, NE. Megan Whittaker of Elkhorn, NE took a commanding lead into the final round and although she did not play her best golf she managed to defend her title and capture the 2017 Nebraska Girls Junior PGA Championship. In the girls 13 to 15 division, Lauren Thiele of Wahoo, NE continued her stellar play to capture her age’s division title. But it was the second spot in the 42nd Girls Junior PGA Championship that was up for grabs as Thiele and Hannah Hunke of Snyder, NE went to xtra holes to earn the right to compete in this championship. On the third playoff hole Hunke hit her tee shot into the water and this ultimately sealed her fate as Thiele becomes the youngest representative at the age of 13 to represent Nebraska in this championship. Whittaker and Thiele will have the opportunity to join 144 of the nation’s top female junior golfers in the PGA of America’s premium unior event, the 42nd Girls Junior PGA Championship, hosted at The Country Club of St. Albans in St. Albans, Missouri. The Country Club of St. Albans has consistently been ranked in the Top 10 courses in the state of Missouri by Golf Digest and looks to be a fantastic venue for the event. The Girls Junior PGA Championship will be held from July 18-21, 2017. The Girls Junior PGA Championship is where some of the best in the world get their start. Many of today’s LPGA Tour professionals made their debut at the Championship. Notable past participants include: Inbee Park, Lexi Thompson, Cristie Kerr, Grace Park, Michelle Wie, and Dottie Pepper.

In this month’s quiz, you are about to cross off your “bucket list” playing a round of golf at TPC Sawgrass. You are nearly there, but you have yet to play the infamous island green par-3 17th hole. See if you can determine your score for this hole in each of the following scenarios. Keep in mind that the bulkhead surrounding the island green is an integral part of the course, and the yellow water hazard line has been painted only a couple of inches inside of the bulkhead. 1. Understandably, you are rather nervous and you forget to put your ball on a tee. You “chunk” your first stroke and your ball lands in the water well short of the green. Fortunately, you are able to compose yourself and, after teeing up another ball within the teeing ground, you make a hole-in-one with your next stroke! 2.
As shown in the adjacent photograph, your tee shot ends up in the fringe just outside of the hazard. When you take your stance, you discover that the heel of your back foot is on the bulkhead. You decide to take relief from the bulkhead by dropping your ball within one club-length of, and no nearer the hole than, the nearest point of relief. You proceed to chip your ball into the hole with your next stroke!
3.
Miraculously, your tee shot ends up at rest on the bulkhead without falling into the water after trickling over the back of the green! As you approach your ball, you reach down and pick up a leaf from the bulkhead and toss it into the water. You then ground your club on the bulkhead in addressing the ball. You chip onto the green and two-putt to complete play of the hole.
4.
Your tee shot ends up near the back of the green, but the hole location is at the front of the green. Unfortunately, your putt down the slope is too strong and your ball ends up in the water. The relief options of dropping on the “flag line” behind the hazard or walking back to the dropping zone would be somewhat embarrassing for you because there is another group already waiting at the teeing ground! Thus, you decide to simply place a ball as near as possible on the spot from which you just putted. You then two-putt to complete play of the hole.
5.
You’ve waited all your golfing life to play this hole, so you are determined to play your tee shot onto the green no matter how many swings it takes! Fortunately, you stocked your golf bag with plenty of balls because it takes seven tee shots before your ball comes to rest on the green. You raise your arms triumphantly when you one-putt to complete play of the hole!
Answers:
1.
3
Your score for the hole is 3 = 2 talent strokes + 1 penalty stroke. You incurred the penalty stroke per Rule 26-1a [Relief for Ball in Water Hazard] by proceeding under the stroke and distance provision of Rule 27-1. Per Rule 20-5 [Making Stroke from Where Previous Stroke Made], when you elect to return to the teeing ground, you may play your next stroke from anywhere within the teeing ground and the ball may be teed.
2.
4
Your score for the hole is 4 = 2 talent strokes + 2 penalty strokes. The Definition of “Obstruction” states, in part, “An “obstruction” is anything artificial … except … Any construction declared by the Committee to be an integral part of the course.” Since the bulkhead is not an immovable obstruction, you were not entitled to relief under Rule 24-2 [Immovable Obstruction] and were not authorized to pick up your ball in play. Thus, you incurred a total penalty of two strokes under Rule 18-2 [Ball at Rest Moved by Player …] for lifting your ball in play and not replacing it.
3.
6
Your score for the hole is 6 = 4 talent strokes + 2 penalty strokes. You are penalized two strokes for picking up a loose impediment lying in the hazard when your ball is also in the hazard per Rule 13-4 [Ball in Hazard; Prohibited Actions]. However, you are not penalized for grounding your club on the bulkhead within the hazard. The Note to Rule 13-4 points out, in part, “At any time, including at address or in the backward movement for the stroke, the player may touch with a club or otherwise … any construction declared by the Committee to be an integral part of the course ….”
4.
5
Your score for the hole is 5 = 4 talent strokes + 1 penalty stroke. You proceeded correctly under Rule 26-1a incurring the stroke and distance penalty. Per Rule 20-5, when you return to the putting green to play your next stroke from where the previous stroke was made, you are required to place the ball on the putting green.
5.
14 Your score for the hole is 14 = 8 talent strokes + 6 penalty strokes. You incurred the stroke and distance penalty per Rule 26-1a for each ball that ended up in the hazard. 18
