Karrie Van Ravenswaay, PGA Assistant Golf Professional The Ridge Golf Club We are very passionate about junior golf at The Ridge Golf Club and in our community. We offer many different junior programs throughout the golf season in order to keep kids excited and learning about the game of golf. Junior golf offerings at The Ridge include; PGA Jr League golf, Junior Camps in June and July (6 sessions each), Junior Golf Play Days (every Wednesday morning), and Family Fun Nights. Also, the Ridge Junior Tour is a unique program we have that accumulates player points throughout the season for practice and play. The individual with the most points in each age division at the end of the season is the Junior Tour Champion. Points are awarded based on practice time and playing holes, not score. This is a very busy schedule, starting June 1st and ending mid-August, including activities Monday-Friday almost every week. These offerings give junior golfers the opportunity to learn the game and hopefully develop a love for golf! Since The Ridge opened for play in 2009, we have had many changes and improvements to our junior golf camp. Our current program is called Golf FORE Kids. This is offered twice per summer, once in each June and July, including six one hour sessions. I feel that the structure, interaction, and variety of activities are the keys to making this program successful. The junior golfers are separated into three separate groups, one at each station, rotating every fifteen minutes. We have found that in order to capture the attention of young kids it is important to introduce them to something new every few minutes. I have written lesson plans that we follow each session, including an indoor rainy day back-up lesson plan. This preparation enables us to introduce 16-20 new activities to the kids throughout the camp. The junior golf opportunity that we feel gives the most opportunity to grow the game is our Family Fun Night. This is an evening when anyone in the community can come to The Ridge and play golf with their family (families with kids 16 & under). There is no fee associated with this event. It is a night that gives people the opportunity to discover and enjoy the game in an environment that has less social pressure. We block off 9 holes for family play from 4:00-8:00 pm, this creates a relaxed atmosphere and helps families to enjoy the game without worrying about other groups on the course rushing them. In addition to playing holes on the course, we also have a mini-golf course set up on the practice green, free range balls, and SNAG equipment for players of all ability levels. The golf professional staff interacts with each family, either on the course, putting green, or driving range. The frequency and variety of opportunities for juniors allows kids, who are often busy with many other activities, more time on the golf course. The family desire to spend quality time together is achieved through the game of golf. Our goal is to grow the game by introducing kids and eventually drawing in their entire family.

Las Vegas, Nevada – Nick Wanderscheid, PGA of Green Valley G.C. (Sioux City, IA) played another stellar round of golf to win the Cobra Puma Golf Vegas Classic. Wanderscheid, holding the lead since day one, needed to continue his great play with a number of professionals within striking distance on the last day hosted at TPC Las Vegas. A final round worth 41 points featuring 4 birdies gave Wandersheid a three day total of 123 points in the Stableford format. Second place was taken by Shane Zywiec, PGA of Highlands Golf Course (Lincoln) with 111 points. The top three was rounded out by Jim White, PGA MP with 104 points. The team from Shadow Ridge Country Club (Omaha) led by Tony Baranowski, PGA won the team division with 317 points in the 2 Net Best Ball Stableford Format. The team consisted of Tony Baranowski, Brian Green, Randy Hoffman, Kirk Lavengood and Dustin Heng who all contributed to an impressive three day total. Runner-up honors went to the team led by Shane Zyweic, PGA with 307 points. The Nebraska PGA Section, the Lincoln YMCA’s PGA Sports Academy youth program and Lincoln youth golfers were featured Feb. 2 on the Golf Channel. The PGA Sports Academy, which was led last year by PGA Professional Wade Foreman, was spotlighted on Golf Channel’s Morning Drive program in celebration of the PGA of America’s Centennial. The PGA Sports Academy, held by the Lincoln YMCA each April and May, provides boys and girls in kindergarten through eighth grades with a fun group environment to learn golf, along with lessons in fitness, nutrition and sportsmanship. Over the course of three sessions held at City of Lincoln golf courses, Player Development Manager Wade Foreman, PGA, and Nebraska Section PGA Professionals provide golf instruction to participants. Ultimately, the program aims to retain these junior golfers by giving them opportunities to continue learning and playing the game. All participants get a membership card to play at over 40 public golf courses across Nebraska at a discounted rate, and opportunities to continue their instruction through Nebraska PGA Section-structured follow-up programs. In its first year, more than 160 kids participated in the program and an additional 100 youth continued their instruction in follow-up programs, which produced over 1,000 rounds of golf for the state. In celebration of its Centennial, the PGA of America partnered with Golf Channel to shine a spotlight on all 41 PGA Sections, and their featured programs and initiatives nationwide, led by PGA Professionals. The spotlights are scheduled to air on the Golf Channel Jan. 27–May 4. Article featured on journalstar.com. Click here to view the article. Click here to watch the video. Rodd Slater, PGA Head Professional, Two Rivers Golf Club
Golf Courses can benefit by hosting a local Pre-School to a field trip at their facility. They can be an important part in introducing golf and a course to kids 4-5 years of age, orientating their parents to a facility and thus benefiting the game. Two Rivers Golf Club, Dakota Dunes, SD schedules two field trip days with the local “Little Scholars Pre-School.” Their school has 4 classes with each making a 1 to 1.5 hour visit, two classes attend per day. Teachers and parents volunteer to assist our staff in all aspects for the 60 total students. Each trip begins with an enthusiastic welcome and a caravan cart tour of the golf course. The tour stops at a tee, a green and a bunker to show off the grass and sand. There is a lot to "show off" to these young juniors, such as wildlife, trees and friendly patrons. For most students, this is their first exposure to a golf course and a cart ride is always fun. The tour ends at the practice area where we present putting, chipping and the full swing with our US Kids 39” demo clubs. Each student has the opportunity to make their 1st putt, their 1st chip and their 1st full swing with a ball. Safety and Fun are the priority as well as each student given a chance to experience these three aspects of the game. The smiles are priceless. We conclude with snack time in the food and beverage area. We thank everyone and present each student a score card, pencil and logo golf ball. The volunteer parents typically have a lot of questions about golf, the facility, rates and services. It is an invaluable marketing opportunity. This program is one of our strategies to grow our Junior TEAM golf program and to involve more families at our facility. It is working despite the competition from other activities like baseball, soccer, basketball, etc. Golf has a lot to offer and we find it helpful to expose it at this age. We believe this can be a long term solution to grow our club and also envision it as a model for other facilities to benefit the game. We encourage all facilities to consider and try this program. It’s proving to be successful at Two Rivers and the smiles are priceless!

Hello to all of the Nebraska PGA members, apprentices and facilities across our great section. I am honored and thrilled to be your new PGA Employment Consultant. My territory is designated as the “Midwest” consultant and will serve the Sections of Iowa, Nebraska, Midwest and Minnesota. Transition in any situation is never easy, but with the help of my fellow PGA Consultant Team I am working daily on understanding the operating principles and how I can serve all of your needs. My goal is to be approachable and visible at many traditional and non-traditional events throughout the Section in 2016. Historically speaking, PGA Members, apprentices and facilities typically reach out to their PGA Employment Consultant only in times of need. When facility management needs to hire a new Head PGA Professional, or a PGA Member is trying to search for a new opportunity, or in the worst situation a PGA member has lost his/her job. My focus will be to reach out to many of you and meet those of you, that I do not know, BEFORE you need my services. I am a PGA member and my desire is for everyone to feel comfortable talking to me about both the good and the bad situations they face on a daily basis. Likewise, I look forward to having casual conversations just to get to know you better personally and gain understanding of each of your own unique qualities and situations. Please feel free to reach out to me, as well, and open up the relationship at any time. I am here to bounce ideas off of and convey what I have seen throughout my Sections that may help. There are two particular tools that I have gained much appreciation for during my training and time working with our consultant team. They are the Employer Communication Plan and the Revenue Scorecard. Being in a golf operations management position dictates the need for ongoing communication to keep your employer up to date on operational activities, financial information, and successes or “wins” for you and your staff. The Employer Communication Plan and Executive Summary sample found on the Employment area of PGA.org can give you a good start on how, what and when to communicate. I would also recommend utilizing the new Revenue Scorecard, a business tool designed to help you quantify the total incremental revenue driven to your facility through your player development programming. It’s also a good idea to keep these communications for a year-end review and for keeping track of your accomplishments for future resume revisions. Thank you for what all of you do each day to grow this great game and to spread the word to promote the PGA Professionals as the key individual to making your members and clients enjoyment of the game the best it can be. Respectfully, Cory Fletcher, PGA PGA Employment Consultant 402-906-1251 cfletcher@pgahq.com

What is the Revenue Scorecard? The PGA Revenue Scorecard is a valuable business tool designed to quantify and report additional revenue derived from your Player Development Programming. What are the benefits of the Revenue Scorecard? The end calculation and output of the revenue scorecard is the incremental revenue generated by your Player Development Programming on an annual basis. This number is a key business measure that can be shared with your facility ownership or supervisor to demonstrate the value you drive to your local facility. It can also be used to benchmark your programming success year-over-year. How do I complete a Revenue Scorecard? As of January 2016, the Revenue Scorecard has been redesigned into a new, user-friendly online survey that should take less than 10 minutes to complete.
START What information do I need to input? Before beginning we suggest you gather the following information to assist with the completion:
Private Facilities Number of adults and juniors participating in programmed lessons Average instruction spend Total number of members Number of new members Number of members who’ve resigned
Public Facilities Number of adults and juniors participating in programmed lessons Average green fees New player spend Total number of rounds played by new golfers All the information you provide will be kept strictly confidential. Who can I speak to for assistance? Please contact the Player Development Regional Manager in, or in closest proximity to your local market. Access the list of managers here.

Peyton Manning might have celebrated the Denver Broncos' Super Bowl 50 victory with a few too many Budweisers and Papa John's pizzas. If that had happened, after falling asleep, he may have started dreaming that he was playing in a stroke play competition paired with fellow-competitor and opposing quarterback, Cam Newton. Such a dream would have quickly turned into a nightmare upon his discovering that there were no Rules Officials anywhere on the course to render rulings on disputed points. Had you been in this dream, do you think you would have made the correct rulings for the following situations? 1. At the first hole, Cam has a short putt for a par. Inexplicably, Cam holes the putt by squatting behind the ball (but not on an extension of the line of putt behind the ball) and striking the ball with the grip end of the putter, using a motion similar to that used in playing a shot in billiards. What is Cam's score for the hole? (a) par (b) bogey (c) double bogey (d) triple bogey. 2. At the turn, Peyton offers to buy lunch in the clubhouse, and the two quarterbacks relax for about 30 minutes before resuming play. What is the ruling? (a) No penalty to either player provided they leave a decent tip. (b) Each player incurs a two-stroke penalty. (c) Both players are disqualified. 3. When they return to the course, they discover that there is another group in the process of playing from the 10th teeing ground. While waiting for the 10th fairway to clear, Cam places a weighted donut on a golf club and makes a few practice swings to loosen up after their extended lunch. He then adds an additional weighted donut and makes a few more practice swings. What is the ruling? (a) No penalty. (b) Cam incurs a two-stroke penalty. (c) Cam incurs a total penalty of four strokes. (d) Cam is disqualified. 4. On the 18th green, Peyton and Cam have putts on similar lines to the hole. Peyton putts first from about fifteen feet. He misreads the right -to-left break and his ball misses the hole to the right by about 18 inches. After tapping in, Peyton tells Cam that he needs to play less break. Cam does not respond, but heeds Peyton’s advice and makes his putt from seven feet. What is the ruling? (a) No penalty to either player. (b) Peyton incurs a two-stroke penalty for giving advice. (c) Both players incur a two-stroke penalty. 5. After signing both of the score cards, and as they are returning the score cards, Peyton and Cam discover that they neglected to swap score cards at the beginning of the round. Thus, Peyton’s scores are recorded on Cam's score card, and vice versa. What is the ruling? (a) The players must go back and record their scores on the proper score cards. (b) The players are both disqualified for signing incorrect score cards. (c) No penalty to either player. Answers: 1. (c)
According to Decision 14-1a/2 [Striking Ball with Billiard-Type Motion], this manner of moving the ball constitutes a push. In stroke play, the stroke counts and the player incurs a penalty of two strokes. See also Decision 14-1a/3 [Putting with Wrong End of Putter].
2. (c)
Rule 6-8 [Discontinuance of Play; Resumption of Play] advises that the player may discontinue play only in certain circumstances, and unauthorized discontinuance of play by the player results in the penalty of disqualification. Decision 6-8a/2.5 [Discontinuing Play for Refreshment] indicates that the Committee may not permit players to discontinue play for refreshment for an extended period (i.e., more than five minutes) during a stipulated round.
3. (b)
The revised penalty for a breach of Rule 14-3 [Artificial Devices and Unusual Equipment; Abnormal Use of Equipment] is two strokes in stroke play for the first offense. If there is a subsequent offense, the penalty is disqualification. According to new Decision 14-3/19 [Player Uses Training Aid Several Times Prior to Stroke], as related acts resulted in Rule 14-3 being breached more than once prior to a stroke, Cam incurs a single two-stroke penalty in stroke play. Refer to Principle 3 in Decision 1-4/12 [Player Breaches Rules More Than Once Prior to Stroke; Whether Multiple Penalties Should Be Applied].
4. (a)
Rule 8-1 [Advice] states. "During a stipulated round, a player must not ... give advice to anyone in the competition playing on the course other than his partner, or ... ask for advice from anyone other than his partner or either of their caddies." Note that Peyton gave advice after he had completed his stipulated round. According to Decision 3/3 [Stipulated Round in Stroke Play], in individual stroke play, the competitor's stipulated round ends when he completes play of the final hole of that round.
5. (c)
According to Decision 6-6d/4 [Competitor's Scores Recorded on Score Card with Fellow-Competitor's Name and Vice Versa], given that each competitor has signed the score card on which his scores were recorded and that his marker has also signed this score card, the Committee should accept the score cards without penalty to either player.
