2016 Youth Player Development Award Jonathan Mielke, PGA Director of Instruction, Oak Hills Country Club I am reminded of a quote by Halford E. Luccock: “No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it.” I would like a caesura to acknowledge my orchestra. The Oak Hills staff and membership, all my junior athletes, the SONE Warriors, US Kids Golf, Callaway Golf, the Nebraska PGA, my wife and two children. Thank you for all your efforts and support in making the 2016 season a symphony. At the start of the season I had two broad goals for junior golf development. To find a new and exciting way to connect with the latest generation of junior golfers, while educating them on the history, beauty and benefits golf has to offer. To give back to the community by expanding the reach of junior golf outside of Oak Hills. Mielke Golf Junior Academy Animation The previous season the junior academy handed out, take home, paper homework. The completion and return rate of the homework was at 35%. I knew we were not connecting with the junior athletes as well as we could. To connect with the latest generation of junior golfers I knew I had to make learning fun but also keep their attention long enough for them to comprehend the information. With some inspiration from my children, I decided I wanted to make some 2D and 3D animated golf cartoons. After six months of classes and some computer upgrades I could design and animate my own characters and send out golf cartoons to the junior athletes as homework. It was a big success! The academy had a 93% watch and return rate on their homework. Wellness and Fitness Elementary School Program Wellness and fitness for junior athletes has always been a passion of mine. In June, I designed a pilot program for elementary school age children. The program discussed basic nutrition, fitness, golf, and the importance of being athletic. I taught the first pilot program to Mary Our Queen (Omaha) school children, grades 1st through 6th. It was a great success with over 200 children attending. Nebraska Golf Show As a guest speaker at the Nebraska Golf Show at the Century Link Center, March 5th was the show’s “Tribute to Junior Golfers.” My topic of discussion was the importance of coaching junior athletes through the Windows of Trainability and Long Term Athletic Development. Special Olympics – SONE Warriors For the past four years, I have had the honor and privilege to volunteer and coach the Special Olympic SONE Warriors golf team. In 2016, the Warriors cleaned up on medals at the Special Olympics Fall Games, winning seven gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals. No matter if we are on or off the golf course, I’m always inspired by these amazing athletes. Their ability and how they conduct themselves in victory or defeat is an inspiration to all of us. GO WARRIORS! Top 50 Instructor – US Kids Golf In 2016 I was selected by US Kids Golf as a worldwide Top 50 kids Instructor. The 2016 season was a symphony that taught me a lot of news skills and that when we as PGA professionals, the experts in the game of golf, think outside the box, we not only grow on a professional level, but a personal level as well. 4

We are pleased to announce a couple of hires to help us in our continued pursuit of serving you and our industry at a high level. Seth Scollard, PGA will serve as the Director of the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour (NJGT) and Player Development for the Nebraska Section PGA. . Originally from Ponca, Nebraska, Seth is a 2014 graduate of the PGA Golf Management Program at UNL. Seth recently served as the Co-Head Professional at Firethorn G.C. where he was very instrumental in day to day operations, TEAM Golf and tournament operations for the club. Seth is an enthusiastic PGA Professional, who is passionate about creating a fun, social and energetic atmosphere for all the programs he is associated with. Seth will work closely with the Nebraska Golf Association and Nebraska Section PGA to continue the growth of the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour. He will also be in charge of player development initiatives supported by both the Nebraska Section PGA and our foundation. Seth and his wife, Makenzie, who is a Kindergarten teacher enjoy golfing together, working on projects around the house and traveling throughout Nebraska to see family and friends. We look forward to having Seth in the office starting Monday, May 22nd. With the considerable growth of the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour and our Section and Foundation programming we have asked Cassie Trumbley to return and serve as our new Junior Golf Coordinator for the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour. Cassie is graduating from Midland University in Fremont, NE with a major in Human Performance – Fitness/Sports Management and a compressed major in Business Marketing and minor in coaching. So yes, Cassie does a tremendous job of time management! Cassie will be instrumental in coordinating our summer interns and Nebraska Junior Golf Tour site directors to ensure we help deliver great golf experiences at over 80 junior events this summer. Cassie will also be instrumental in assisting Sean during the later summer months with Section Championships, Web.com Q-School(Pre-Qual/Stage 1) and the Wells Fargo Nebraska Open. Cassie will also assist Bob Danenhauer with executing foundation programming into the fall and winter months.

Spencer Schaulis – Originally from Wisner, NE, Spencer is a student at the University of NebraskaLincoln majoring in PGA Golf Management. While in Lincoln, his home course is Mahoney Golf Course. He has employment experience at Maroon Creek Club in Aspen, Colorado and Westmoreland Country Club in Willmette (Chicago), Illinois. Spencer enjoys golfing, wakeboarding, attending sporting venues/watching sports and playing basketball. His favorite teams to cheer for are the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Kansas City Royals and the Minnesota Timberwolves. The highlight of his golf career thus far was qualifying for the State Tournament both as a team and individually, breaking 70 and scoring double eagle.
Cordell Weber – Originally from Welcome, MN is also a student at the University of NebraskaLincoln majoring in PGA Golf Management. Cordell’s current home course in Lincoln is Yankee Hill Country Club. He has also spent time working at Fox Lake Golf Club (Sherburn, MN); Rose Lake Golf Club (Fairmont, MN) and Interlaken Golf Club (Fairmont, MN.) In his free time, Cordell enjoys golfing, basketball, tennis and fishing. The teams that he cheers for are the Minnesota Wild, Vikings, Timberwolves and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. The highlight of his golf career has been becoming a state tournament champion in Minnesota in 2012. Spencer and Cordell have already made significant contributions to the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour and in fact, Cordell was our meteorologist at our last Pro-Am with his expertise in this area! Please help me in welcoming Spencer and Cordell when you see them this summer.

Parents Can Register Their Junior Golfers, Get More Information at www.DriveChipandPutt.com The USGA and the PGA of America announced that qualifying registration for the fifth Drive, Chip and Putt Championship is now officially open. This fun, free and nationwide youth golf development initiative invites boys and girls, ages 7-15, to participate in local qualifying opportunities set in all 50 states throughout the months of May, June, July and August. Boys and girls will enter to play across separate divisions in four age categories, with scoring centered around golf’s three fundamental skills (Drive, Chip and Putt). Top performers at the local level will advance through sub-regional and regional qualifiers in July/August and September/October, respectively, at some of the nation’s most acclaimed venues and championship sites. From these qualifiers, 80 finalists – 40 boys and 40 girls – will earn an invitation to the National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday, April 1, the eve of the 2018 Masters Tournament.

If you had your choice, which of the following two golf shots would you rather not experience during a competitive round: the infamous full-swing shank or the dreaded double-hit chip? These two uncommon and unplanned golf shots will give any golfer nightmares for days or weeks after they occur! When the full-swing shank suddenly appears out of nowhere, not only is the player faced with the next shot from the rough or the trees, but his or her head is spinning, wondering if the next swing will produce yet another shank . The double-hit chip occurs when a player’s wedge gets caught in the grass and momentarily decelerates. When the club subsequently escapes the grass, it collides with the ball a second time and usually knocks the ball sideways. At least, with the double-hit chip, the player knows why it happened. However, this unfortunate shot results in a penalty stroke, and can shatter a player’s confidence whether or not he or she is in contention.
No golfer is immune to the double-hit chip, not even Tour players. The four photographs to the right show the partial swing sequence of Bud Cauley during his third round of the 2017 Valero Texas Open at the TPC San Antonio’s AT&T Oaks Course.as he was attempting to chip onto the putting green of the 12th hole. Addressing the ball on the fringe, Cauley was looking to chip his ball into the hole for a birdie. However, he double-hit his chip and, all of a sudden, he was faced with a 13 -foot putt from the fringe for a bogey. Fortunately, Cauley kept his composure and drained the putt to limit the damage.
For the double-hit chip, the applicable Rule is Rule 14-4 [Striking The Ball More Than Once] which reads as follows: “If a player’s club strikes the ball more than once in the course of a stroke, the player must count the stroke and add a penalty stroke, making two strokes in all.” That’s the “double trouble” with the double-hit, i.e., two strokes added to your score. The player must then play his or her ball from where if comes to rest. Note that if the player happens to triple-hit his or her ball, the penalty is still one stroke.
Probably the most famous (or infamous) double-hit chip by a Tour professional occurred during the 1985 U.S. Open at the Oakland Hills Country Club. In the final round, T.C. Chen had a four-shot lead as he was preparing to play his fourth stroke onto the putting green of the par-4 5th hole. Unfortunately, he double-hit his chip shot which came to rest on the fringe to his left. Lying 5, he chipped past the hole, and then two-putted, ending up with a quadruple bogey. Within a matter of minutes, his commanding lead was gone and he was tied with Andy North. T.C. Chen eventually lost to Andy North by just one stroke 16
