Letter from NGJT Director Joe Canny, PGA We are only a week into the season and we already have five events under our belts. From Lincoln to Council Bluff and Beemer to Columbus, the NJGT has toured the Eastern half of our territory this May. NJGT Membership Packets have been flying out the door and the majority of you should have received the shipment by now. For those who have not received their NJGT Membership Packet…it is on its way!

I wanted to use this issues letter to congratulate our High School State Golf Qualifiers and Champions. I have had the opportunity to be at a number of the District and State Championships and it has really been a pleasure to finally meet many of you in person. I was not only impressed by the great golf I saw, but also by the professionalism and maturity of the junior golfers that make up the state of Nebraska.

Sand Hills Golf Club has consistently ranked as one of the United States’ best courses since opening in 1995 and will serve as our host for the Tour Championship for all 18-hole divisions. Qualification for this event will be based on each player’s best eight finishes through the Kearney Country Club Premier Event on July 15th.

Nebraska Junior Golf Tour membership is open to boys and girls beginning at age 7 and extends through the summer following a golfer's graduation from high school, regardless of age.

2013 Season Membership Dues:

$60 annually for boys ages 12 & up and girls ages 14 & up $50 annually for boys ages 7-11 and girls ages 7-13 All dues are non-refundable. A golfer's age on July 1, 2013 determines their age group of competition for the entire summer and their applicable membership dues.

Eligibility: Boys ages 12 and older and girls ages 14 and old-

Featured Facility Wayne Country Club

Wayne Country Club is one of Nebraska’s finest golf courses and will once again be hosting a NJGT Event on June 20th. About two hours north of Omaha and Lincoln, Wayne is a great town for the whole family to visit and the golf course will not disappoint. The Par 72, 18-hole layout features immaculate conditions and a unique layout in the hills of Northeast Nebraska. The signature hole is #11, a Par-4 chosen by the Nebraska Golf Association as one of the hardest holes in the state.

‘s Tour Tips This weeks GolfTEC Tour Tip comes from GolfTEC Instructor Mark Stava, PGA. Mark is a PGA member of the Nebraska Section and have been working in the golf business and playing competitive for over 12 years. Currently Mark has taught over 1,400 lessons throughout internships and while working at GolfTEC. The most valuable break through that I learned which launched my ability to perform on the course is to try to mow the grass with your club. Trust that the loft of the club will hit the ball in the air. Make sure to take practice swings to feel this mowing of the grass where the ball is sitting and then take that swing into your shot. This will help you hit solid shots that get in the air and will also make golf more fun!

Site Director Spotlight ~ Pam Gallagher My name is Pam Gallagher; I will be one of this year's Site Directors for Western & Central Nebraska. I am a retired school teacher who loves to golf and read books in just about equal portions. Last year I read 99 books and posted 96 rounds of golf. I was introduced to the game of golf when I was a teenager but didn't really have an opportunity to play much until I was 35. I quickly discovered that if one wanted to be good, it was going to take tons of practice and a good mental outlook. Consequently I spent lots of time at the driving range and on the practice putting green, besides playing just about every day in the summer. Many of my most memorable experiences related to golf were during the eight years I was the girls' golf coach at Kearney Senior High. Every year I was privileged to be around dedicated and talented golfers who were quite successful as individuals and as teams. Just as important, they were equally as talented and dedicated as students. Since retiring, I have been active in the Nebraska Women's Amateur Golf Association as a player, rules official, and as a member of the NWAGA Executive Board. I have also attended USGA and NGA rules sessions and for the last six years have volunteered as a rules official each spring and fall for the high school state golf tournaments. Every year I am impressed by the competitors at the state tournaments, not just because of how they play, but because of how they act on the golf course in conditions that are often not very nice. I am looking forward to my first experience as a Site Director and am anxious for the summer golf season to begin.

Fitness and nutrition are very important in the PGA Sports Academy and this guide will provide you with exercises and information on how you can get more active. By making healthy food choices you will feel better and play better. So start making healthy choices today!

Fitness is an important part of any sport. Golf is a sport, and golfers are athletes. A good fitness program starts with a good nutritional plan.

Water is the most important part of a diet. Water helps the body and mind maintain energy and focus both on and off the golf course. It is important to drink water before you become thirsty. If you are thirsty, then your body is telling you that it needs more water. A good rule of thumb is to drink half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. For example, if you weigh 48 pounds, then they should drink 24 ounces of water. You can quench your body’s thirst faster with water because it does not contain sugar – which is regularly found in most soda and energy drinks.

Using Your USGA Handicap Index (GHIN) As an NJGT Member you receive a membership into the Nebraska Golf Association and a USGA Handicap. A Handicap Index is computed using your ten best scores of your most recent twenty scores and the appropriate USGA Course Rating and Slope Rating for each course played. This number indicates the potential ability of a player as compared to an expert player on a course of average difficulty. A minimum of five 18-hole attested scores are required to establish a Handicap Index. The more scores you post the more accurate your Handicap Index will become.

You have the ability to post 9hole and 18-hole scores.

All rounds played in NJGT Tournaments will be automatically posted to your Handicap Index. You can also post scores from your practice rounds, play with family/ friends and other events. To begin posting scores to your record visit NebGolf.org.

FORE! Application Available FORE! is a statewide initiative allowing deserving youth the opportunity to play some of the state's best courses for $4 putting to use the life skills and values training they learn prior to membership.

FORE! began in 2012 as a pilot program in the Omaha Metropolitan area. This year all NJGT Members age 7-17 can participate in markets such as Lincoln, Kearney, Omaha, Grand Island and more from June through August.

Golfers age 7-11 are classified as “Supervised Access” members and must be accompanied by an adult when they play at an 18-hole facility. They may play at 9-hole facilities without restriction. Golfers age 12-17 are either classified as “Supervised Access” or “Full Access” based on certified program director’s recommendation. “Full Access” members may play each participating facility without adult supervision. FORE! membership includes membership in the Nebraska Golf Association and the benefits that accompany it.
