Three events into the season and we are already seeing fireworks! Couldn’t be more thrilled with the first week and the level of competition and sportsmanship displayed. Really great to be able to attend the West Nine NJGT Tournament and Knolls CC TEAM GOLF event and get the opportunity to meet many of you in person.

Now that the season has begun I have had the chance to connect with many of you by phone, in person and by email.

Your feedback is huge as we look to improve this program not only each year but tournament to tournament. I thought it may be valuable this month to highlight a few of the frequently asked questions I have been receiving in case it may help you out there.

Here are our top 3:

Q:

I’ve registered for the tour and was wondering when I would receive my membership packet?

A:

The first batch of membership packets went out early to mid-May. The reason for a delay was we wanted to give you the newest NIKE GOLF gear from the Spring Catalogue and that is when it was available.

Q:

I have trouble registering for events on my computer. What could be wrong?

A: The answer varies but the most common reasons are that the system does not respond best to Google Chrome and Safari. People have had success switching over to Mozilla FireFox and Internet Explorer. Another common issue is work computers don’t allow certain screens.

Q:

I’d love to play in a certain tournament but I have another sports practice in the afternoon. Could I tee off earlier?

A:

We are happy to take requests for these types of situations and if it is possible we will make it work!

Path to The Prairie Club This year’s 18-hole division NJGT Championship will be hosted at The Prairie Club in Valentine, Nebraska. The Prairie Club has received remarkable praise with both courses currently ranked in Top 100 Resort Courses (Golf Week), with the Dunes Course ranked as high as #19. It also received a spot on the Top 100 Courses You Can Play from Golf Magazine. The Prairie Club annually supports junior golf in Nebraska, South Dakota and Western Iowa and in 2014 will host the NJGT Championship for the 18-Hole Divisions.

Race to Wilderness Ridge The 9-hole division championship will be hosted on the executive course of Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Lincoln, Nebraska. The home course of the University of Nebraska Husker Golf Teams, Wilderness Ridge hosts a variety of other championships including a Web.com Pre-Qualifier (Q-School), Nebraska PGA Championships, NAIA National Women’s Championship and more.

‘s Tour Tips Golf is a game of confidence and competence. Your muscles and the rest of your body are controlled by your mind. Unless your mind is functioning well when you play golf, your muscles are going to flounder. If your head is filled with bad thoughts, your scorecard is going to be full of bad strokes.

The Ridge

Sioux Center, IA Our course spotlight for June’s first newsletter is the 2012 Iowa Golf Association’s 18- hole course of the year and the June 13th stop for the NJGT, The Ridge Golf Club of Sioux Center Iowa. The Ridge GC is one of the only courses to host an event for South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska’s junior tour. It was built on the Vermeer Farm witch was in the family from 1882 to 2006. The Ridge GC is a uniquely designed and constructed course set on two large drainage basins.

The course gets its name from the prominent ridge that separates the two basins the front nine from the back nine. The Ridge GC is a parkland style course, with several lakes ranging from one to a few acres in size. They offer golfers of varying abilities an enjoyable challenge with five sets of tees. The Ridge GC has a large range is also provided with realistic greens and fairway targets, and also includes a large practice facility.

The Ridge GC is located about 144 miles (2 hours and 18 minutes) north of Omaha. Sioux Center offers dining options from the entire family, with multiple restaurants such as The Fruited Plain Café, Los Tulipanes. Or the Sioux County Livestock Co. which has several specialty burgers like the Patty Mac, a patty melt with mac and cheese on top, or the Fat Boy burger a choice of either two 1/3 pound beef patties or two 6oz chicken breast, American and Swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and 1000 island dressing served on a hoagie bun. Sioux Center also has a large aquatic center that offers public swimming from 1pm to 5pm all week long.

Having control of your mind and using it properly can separate you from the competition. I believe every golfer has the potential to be much better than he or she is, and that using the mind is one essential way to improve.

You will never know if you have the ability to be the best player in the world, or the best player in your club, unless you commit yourself to developing both your physical and mental skills.

1. Play to play great.

There's a fine line between playing to play great and playing recklessly.

Reckless players hit driver off virtually every tee. They aim at the hardest pins that they have no business aiming at. Golfers who are playing to play great love a great drive more than they fear the rough. They like making putts more than they care about three-putting. Golfers that play to play great have a conservative strategy for certain holes. The conservative strategy is what permits them to always make a confident, even cocky swing.

When the moment is right, when they've got a scoring club in their hands, they take dead aim at the hole. But only when the moment is right. They know that if they get too concerned about not being bad, they might not free themselves up enough to be great.

2. Love the challenge of the day, whatever it may be.

Golf is a game of mistakes and unpredictable fortune. If you truly love golf, you must love the fact that golf is naturally an imperfect game. If you spend your time fighting the fact that golf is a game of mistakes and trying to make it a game of perfect shots, you’re really saying that you don't like golf. Golfers who understand and love the game accept it rather than fight it. They realize that golf is a game of inevitable mistakes and misfortunes.

They know they can separate themselves from their competition not just by perfecting their games but by constantly striving to improve. If there's one thing you should always be proud of, it's how well you react to mistakes. You will never have complete control of the golf ball, but you can control your attitude.

3. Get out of results and get into process.

In golf, most times we get too focused on results, and we don’t focus on the shot we are about to hit. Success comes from patiently and persistently doing the right things over and over. Developing a pre-shot routine is great to overcome your nerves and helps a golfer stay focused over the ball. Before you tee off read these helpful reminders to insure you play your best every time you tee it up.  I will execute my pre-shot routine on every shot.  I will stay in the present. I won't speculate in the middle of the round about what my score will be, or where I'll stand in the tournament.  I will trust myself and my swing on every shot.  I will refuse to allow anything that happens on the golf course today to bother me or upset me.

Fitness Facts Presented by The PGA Sports Academy powered by UnitedHealthcare Playing a quality round of 18 holes requires a lot of time, endurance and energy. The average round is four or five hours long so not only is it important to eat before you play, it is equally important to have some snack foods handy during your round. PGA Tour fitness advisor Chris Noss, who works with players like Rickie Fowler and Zach Johnson, says golf is a bursts-of-energy sport as well as an endurance test. Your muscles are called upon for power, but they also have to keep your body going for hours. Noss offers these tips:

1. EAT SMART:

By taking notice to the foods you eat before and after each time you take to the course you could possibly boost your game up to the next level . Lean-protein, high-fiber meals before the round will help sustain your energy and prevent crashing, the feeling of fatigue brought on by simple-carbohydrate foods, such as bread, pretzels, sugary snacks, etc.

4 Foods to Maximize Your Performance

Each food holds its own purpose for keeping your body on par for your entire round. If you don't really care for any of the foods I've listed, please feel free to swap out any you see fit. But try to make sure the foods you swap hold some nutritional value.

Carrots: Widely known to enhance your eye sight. Carrots won't turn you into Tiger Woods on the course but carrots will help you out none the less. Carrots help blood flow to the eyes which in turn will help you read the greens during those tricky putts, assist your vision on gauging your distance from the pin, and also help you read the flight of your ball.

Celery: Golfing during a hot day can very quickly dehydrate you, and weaken your bones by retrieving stored sodium from them. And there is where celery steps in. Celery contains mostly water and sodium, so this will help keep your hydrated, and also keep your bones strong and powerful throughout the whole round.

Walnuts: Another really helpful snack food on the golf course that improves focus, and brain functions. Walnuts are packed with protein, fiber, vitamins B, & E, and antioxidants. Nuts in general also contain monosaturated fats, which are omega 3 fatty acids, and they are the good fats for your body that can help lower cholesterol.

Tomatoes: Tomatoes are a snack that is best eaten before your round but can also just as easily be eaten during.

Eating tomatoes before your round helps the body increase the blood flow to your heart. With this increased blood flow your body is able to increase its endurance, which allows you to repeat your swing and have an overall more productive and fun time on the golf course.

2. DRINK WATER:

Lots of it. And if you want to take supplements during a round, any drinks with amino acids can help your energy. But eating a lot of fiber and drinking water will suffice for keeping muscles working properly.

3. DO CARDIO WORKOUTS:

Add it either before or as part of a strength-training routine. To do it during your routine, reduce the amount of rest between your sets. You want to move at a pace slightly more intense than you feel is comfortable, but you don't want to go so fast that the quality of your form deteriorates. This combined routine will simulate the physical requirements of playing 18 holes, especially if you walk.

Play More with FORE! What is FORE!?

As an extension of other initiatives that first introduce the game, the Nebraska Golf Association created FORE!, an access program that provides junior golfers the opportunity to play golf more frequently at participating NGA member clubs during the months of May, June, July and August. FORE! members can play participating courses across the state for just $4 per round.

Who’s eligible for FORE! membership?

FORE! is not simply a discount card. Although the NGA wants to be as inclusive as possible it also wants members that have been introduced to the game through some sort of instruction and have a basic understanding of both the Rules of Golf and proper Etiquette. That said we require that FORE! applicants meet the following age and eligibility criteria: Age: No minimum age, a golfer is no longer eligible for membership once they hit the date of September 1 following graduation from secondary school (high school).

Eligibility: Golfer must meet one of four eligibility requirements that meet the criteria of proper introduction:

• 2014 participant in one of the following certified programs: First Tee; Golf ‘N’ Schools; Great Golf Expectations; LPGA/USGA Girls Golf; NGA Youth on Course; Nebraska Junior Golf Tour; Panhandle Junior Golf Tour and PGA/USGA Sports Academy.

• 2014 participant in a junior golf program at an NGA member club.

• 2013-2014 high school golf team participant • Other golfers approved by senior official at NGA member club (i.e.

PGA Professional or Club Manager).

How do eligible golfers join the FORE! program?

Applications are available on the FORE! web site (nebgolf.org/FORE), in both paper and online forms. The fee for membership is $10, and in addition to their membership cards, FORE! members receive a NGA membership.

Where can FORE! rounds be played?

FORE! is a statewide initiative in 2014, and is available in most regions of the state with over 40 participating golf courses. For a full list of participating courses, including contact information, please visit the FORE! website at nebgolf.org/ FORE.

How is the FORE! program funded?

The FORE! program is funded by the Nebraska Golf Foundation, whose mission is to promote the growth of golf in Nebraska with an emphasis on making the game and its life-enhancing values accessible to youth. A sizable donation was made to the NGF from the 2013 U.S. Senior Open Championship in support of FORE! In addition, the NGF earmarks a portion of its own fundraising efforts to support the program.
