Dear Nebraska PGA Members and Associates, The Section will be holding elections at the 2019 Fall Meeting currently scheduled for Monday, November 18, 2019 at Champions Run. Your Section Board of Directors has established some “ground rules” with regard to the campaign. If, after reading this memo, you have any questions or comments, please don’t hesitate to contact me (402-571-7470) or CEO, David Honnens, PGA at the Section offices (402-489-7760). Nominations from the floor of the meeting can be made. However, to enhance the campaign and election process the Board has authorized the Section staff to send out, via email up to a two page “Campaign Letter” on each candidate’s behalf. In order to take advantage of this, the candidate must send a “Letter of Intent” to my attention via email or the regular mail. Email is preferred to (nebraska@pgahq.com) or if you use regular mail, again send to my attention to: Nebraska Section PGA, c/o Tony Pesavento, PGA, 610 J Street, Suite 10, Lincoln, NE 68508. The “Letter of Intent” and the desired “Campaign Letter” must arrive by 5:00 p.m. on September 6, 2019. The plan is to email all of the “Campaign Letters” together. If a candidate misses this deadline, he/she will be on their own with regard to the mailing of any campaign materials. Obviously, announcing sooner than later will provide more opportunity for publicity. Similarly, the Section staff will post to the Section’s website (candidates for secretary tab) just about any document (WORD format) a candidate provides (this would include the previously referenced “Campaign Letter”), as well as a photograph (JPG format). There is no limitation on the number or size of the documents to be posted. Eventually, all materials must be provided electronically to Renee at the Section office (rtyson@pgahq.com). Also, while the Section staff will format the documents for printing and mailing and/or posting on the website, they are not permitted to correct, edit or change the submissions. In order to be listed as a candidate in the Fall Meeting Booklet, a candidate’s “Letter of Intent” must be received at the Section office by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 28, 2019. Respectfully submitted, Tony Pesavento, PGA Nominating Committee Chair

When Scott McCarron returned to his locker after a round in the 2018 Boca Raton Invitational, a bottle of CBD oil pills had been placed in the cubby by Functional Remedies EndoSport. It's not unusual for professional golfers to have various products given to them to sample, but this one in particular was intriguing to the No. 1-ranked player on the PGA Champions Tour. McCarron didn't know a great deal about CBD oil, but he knew enough from research and talking to other athletes who had taken cannabidiol (CBD), a supplement derived from the hemp plant, to realize that it might be able to help with some of his ailments. "I went and tried it about two weeks later when I went home. I measure my sleep with a device called WHOOP," McCarron said. "That's a sleep and strain device. Major League Baseball, NFL and Olympic athletes use the device. For the first time in about two years that I'd been wearing the device, I was taking the CBD oil, started on Monday and had sleep in the green, which is fantastic sleep, for seven days straight the first time I took this CBD oil at night to help me sleep." McCarron has now been using the products for nearly two years and is among a growing list of PGA Champions Tour players using CBD oil for various reasons, including sleep, recovery, anxiety and inflammation. Through word of mouth of the perceived benefits, the products have spread on the Champions Tour. Despite its open popularity among the senior players, it has taken longer to surface as an acceptable practice to discuss publicly with the PGA Tour players. That is rapidly changing, though, as the perception of and education about the product are growing as well. What used to be a taboo topic, and a product quite a few players on the Tour were using but were reluctant to talk about, has become a growing industry -- now diving into sponsorships and ambassador programs with high-profile players from both tours, including McCarron, Bubba Watson, David Toms,Vaughn Taylor, DJ Trahan, Kenny Perry, Tom Kite and Scott Piercy, among others. Part of the reason CBD oil has been more popular early on in the Champions Tour is because the players are older, with rapidly changing bodies, and are looking for ways to continue competing at a high level with their grueling schedules. A big reason the senior players are more open to discussing CBD use than their younger counterparts on the PGA Tour, however, is because they are not drug-tested in the same way as the under-50 crowd on the PGA Tour. CBD is derived from the hemp plant, which is a strain of cannabis, but it is grown and used to make the products because it typically contains less THC, the psychoactive ingredient 9 that causes a high, than the marijuana plant. Jeff "JD" Drimel, PGA PGA Career Consultant Dear District 8 PGA Members & Friends, “Dog Days of Summer!” I’ve heard it…never really knew what it meant but the phrase comes from the Ancient Romans referring to the hottest, most humid days of summer. The Romans associated the time of year with the star Sirus also known as the “Dog Star,” the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major. We are in the DOGS DAYS! Typically, our facilities host our biggest events this time of the year and I would encourage everyone to document your successes. Be able to communicate what YOU did to make the event a success, how YOU made your players and customers feel, and how it directly affected the facility in a positive way. Trust me, you may want to use the information in your yearly summary reports in the off season. Other Items: A. HELP! Recruitment – Are you doing what you can to recruit our next PGA Members or people for the golf business? Be a Mentor, contact a Mentor, find a Mentor…Many of our PGA Professionals are looking for golf-loving people to join their teams. Non-PGA Facilities are still looking to fill their openings with PGA Professionals and we are actively trying to fill their needs as well. Let’s do our part to promote our profession. B. Goals – Do you currently have daily, weekly and yearly goals? If so, are they written down and displayed where they can easily be seen? Most individuals have better success achieving their goals when they are revisited and monitored regularly. C. Visits – I will be making visits to events in District 8 over the next couple of months. Please feel free to contact me, approach me and find time to discuss any issues. -Section Championship & Senior Section Championship attendance. D. Career Planning – Feel free to contact me to update or review your Career Goals. E. Work/Life Balance – Do yourself a favor, take some time out of each day to do something you enjoy or at the very least, take a breath and relax…you deserve it!

David Schneider, PGA District 8 Director Greetings to all Members and Associates of the Nebraska PGA! Hopefully we are all sensing in our operations that “Golf is NOT Dying”. In fact, I would argue that it is the exact opposite. The excitement of people picking up a golf club is all around us and is taking many forms. Please, please do not judge and operate your business solely on “Rounds of Golf” as the main indicator. Yes, I completely understand that for many of us that are not in private country clubs that green fees and cart fees are the lifeblood of our operations. However, I challenge each of us to “bust the norm” with ways to drive customers to your facility. Putting Clinic with a DJ on the Green, Tuesday night Skills Challenge on the range followed by a complimentary wine tasting, Friday night 3 Hole Family Golf followed by Movie Night on the Tee, etc. If you google ideas, you will get 50 great ones in minutes. Regarding Nebraska itself, in the Omaha market, there is a TOPGOLF coming to town. Several hours to the west of us, there is a new incredible golf course that will be opening soon. There are some great indicators and we all need to be the leaders in POSITIVITY. Anytime you hear, “Golf is Dying”, challenge and inform that person that rounds might be flat across the nation, but interest in the game is exploding and they should jump on the train. Regarding what is happening Nationally, there is a lot on the horizon the next 90 days. 

August 6th and 7th – National Committee Meetings in Chicago, IL I am assigned with the Employment Committee and the Governance Task Force

August 13th – PGA Board Conference Call

September 8th – 10th – Fall Business Planning Session – West Palm Beach, FL

October 7th and 8th – District 8 Fall Meetings – Des Moines, IA

We will keep all informed as to the great initiatives that are in place and ones that are on the horizon. Have a great start to the fall season in Nebraska and be sure to contact me if you have any questions I can assist. daves@happyhollowclub.com 402-391-2341. From the Front Tees - Director Dann Husmann Winter and spring were interesting times for everyone in Nebraska. The more traditional winters like the ones I grew up with reared its wintery head this year. While the snow was often unwelcome at times, I think our various grass varieties in Nebraska very much appreciated the snow cover. On a more positive note, we produced twelve newly minted PGA professionals from UNL’s December 2018 graduation and May 2019 graduation. Read more about these graduates in the enclosed articles including the wonderful internship experiences these students completed and the great facilities these students are ending up at for their first positions after graduation. WOW! There are some really cool places! Academically, our students are doing great. We've had many students earn perfect 4.0 grade point averages in the fall and spring semester and a couple of our students were on both the CASNR Dean's List for both semesters. See if you can identify these high achieving students from the article. They can go low on the golf course and high in the classroom; that is the right combination! This spring we had our first individual PGA golf management students compete in the 33rd PGA WORKS Championship in Florida. All three men represented UNL and the program very well. TJ Loudner finished in 6th place and both Nakul and Arihant played well on the Ryder Course at Port St. Lucie, Florida. This spring we had PGA professionals Mike Schuchart and Alex Carper on campus for individual and group lessons for our students' player development program. Students were able to interact and work with two of Nebraska's finest PGA professionals. A special thank you to Wilderness Ridge for allowing Mike and Alex to spend time on campus working with our students. In the area of recruitment, we continue to be challenged in identifying women and men who might be interested in a career in the golf industry. We realize our best recruiters for our program are our graduates who are out in the industry working on the frontlines in their facilities. I would ask that when you come across an individual who might be interested in our industry, ask her/him if s/he has thought about pursuing an education at UNL in PGA Golf Management. If anyone expresses interest or excitement about the prospect, please let us know. All necessary information is at our website which can be found below. The career opportunities are endless!

Player Development Award Carly Ulrich, PGA Add Fitness to Coaching Vinnie Manginelli, PGA PGA Magazine

To ensure my golf instruction is most effective, I subscribe to simplicity in my teaching and ensure a comfortable rapport with students, both of which helps them overcome their hesitation and any intimidation they may feel. I stress the golf swing as an effect of body movement, and focus less on the various positions of the hands and club throughout the swing. I feel that being too technical is a barrier to progress and prefer to highlight the effects that body rotation has on the swing. With that in mind, I believe it is important to implement physical fitness into my golf instruction and educate students on the benefits of personal training in their golf improvement. I enjoy using my fitness background to instill this knowledge, as well as provide a fresh perspective to golf instruction. Once a student grasps this concept, he or she better understands how the body moves within the golf swing and appreciates teaching that focuses on simplicity rather than a complicated mechanical or robotic golf swing. They often hit the golf ball better than they have before and instantly buy into the concepts I am conveying. I stress feel in the rotation of the body and promote an effortless swing. This progress stems from an initial analysis of the swing the student had from the start. After watching a few swings, I question the student on what he or she is feeling and its effect on the swing, quality of contact, and subsequent ball flight. Students are amazed when they see their ball flight change as their swing path is altered by the proper rotation of their body. Teaching them to rotate by initiating the left shoulder (for righties) away from their target, and keeping their core dominant through the turn allows us to lessen the effects of the hands and arms in the swing. I generally only teach sequence if needed to reinforce a point of instruction. Carly Ulrich, PGA Happy Hollow Club Teaching Professional 17

Fall is just around the corner, which means it’s time to get ready for football season! Cutter & Buck offers many, many fully licensed NCAA products for you. I have attached just a small sample of HUSKER logoed, best-selling, mens apparel. Scott Frost wore a lot of grey last year, so while red and black are always the most popular, it’s a good idea to consider a little grey in your assortment too. Keep in mind, we also have some great options for NFL teams, so you may want to consider a couple pieces of Chiefs, Broncos or Vikings apparel, just to change up your shop and offer your customers something out of the ordinary. As always, there’s no minimum quantity to order and you can mix-and-match (mens/ladies) any way you would like. Please let me know if you have any questions. R.J.
