From the Desk of NGJT Director Joe Canny, PGA

The 2014 Season is in the books and I wanted to thank each and every one of you for making it a memorable one! Some highlights that stick out for me are the hole-in-one from Carson Blecke at Eagle Run Golf Club during our tournament. I also had a great time getting to spend some time with you at our first-ever Foot Golf Championship, The Prairie Club and more!

‘s Tour Tips High School Golf Tournaments The NJGT Season has concluded and now we switch over to High School Golf for many of you. For this reason we are going to focus this month on tips for playing in High School Tournaments. The good news is that you have already done your part playing in the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour getting in those tournament reps and keeping your game sharp playing against the region’s top competition.

Winning golf tournaments is not an easy task. The fact that you want to win shows you are emotionally tied to the event so keeping those emotions in control will be key. Breathing exercises and taking mental breaks to enjoy the golf scenery can benefit you greatly.

Golf is unique in that you are not always playing directly against your completion and your competition is much larger. You may be in a tournament of 100 but only get to play alongside two other competitors. Don’t get too tied down competing and matching your playing partners. Many successful tournament players simply compete against the golf course and see where they lie at the end of the event.

There is a lot you cannot control at a golf tournament so it is important to only focus on those elements of the game you are in control of. Controlling your emotions and temperament is extremely important if you follow the mentality in golf that you are competing against yourself. This may become crucial if you find yourself playing with a fellow competitor who is having an off-day. Other elements in your control include proper hydration, proper shot selection and gear.

The golf season will be over before we know it. This fall and winter make sure to commit yourself to improving your game through fitness.

Off-Season Exercises to Keep You in Top Form A proper and powerful golf swing has physical requirements as well as fundamental requirements learned through lessons and practice. By not training the body for golf it can create limitations in power, flexibility, mobility, stability and more. If you lack some of the above your body will create compensations in your golf swing leading to loss of distance, accuracy and consistency.

Core Rotations

The off-season consists of the time of year in which competitive golf is not being played, and the amount Hamstring Curls of practice time associated with the sport is minimal.

In Nebraska our off-season is a couple months long which allows any golfer to implement a sportsspecific conditioning program for golf. A recommended time frame for an off-season golf specific training program is 8-12 weeks.

A common fault of many golfers as they begin their off-season training program is they focus almost entirely on golf-specific exercises. They purchase any Golf Pivot Drills (Medicine Ball) number of devises they can use in their basement to train a golf muscle. A better approach is to train the entire body. Spend the first few weeks of your offseason working on strength in your entire body, mobility and flexibility. Continue this training throughout your off-season and after a few weeks start incorporating those golf specific exercises.

In all exercise programs make sure you always stay within your limits. Being smart and careful is not only better for your health‌it is more effective for training your swing.
