Dawn Neujahr on the importance of making common sense adjustments:
By Dawn Neujahr, PGA for PGA Magazine
Making some common sense adjustments and related restrictions can help both your membership and staff feel safe while still having an enjoyable experience. The first steps were to adjust our tee times to 12-minute intervals and we encouraged players to walk, with a "one person to a golf car" rule unless the second person is your significant other or child living within your household.

We are using the pool noodle method around the flagstick, with the noodle cut an inch or so below the cup. When a ball is holed, players can remove it with two fingers instead of having to touch the flagstick and reach deep down to retrieve it. Bunker rakes, ball washers, water coolers and beverage coolers have been removed to limit touch points. We have increased signage over what you can and can't do/ what is and isn't available, and we're using high amounts of disinfectant everywhere. We are also keeping our members engaged with a daily Facebook live stream, activities include, crafts, fitness, tennis and golf instruction, yoga, cooking classes and walk through shopping, just to name a few. Every department is involved, keeping our members engaged and a part of our Champions Run "family."
Dawn Neujahr, the Nebraska PGA Section Vice President, an eight-time Nebraska PGA Section Merchandiser of the Year for Private Facilities and the 2016 Section Bill Strausbaugh Award winner, is a PGA Assistant Professional at Champions Run in Omaha, Nebraska.
Dawn Neujahr on the business impact of making common sense adjustments: Our tee sheet has been full, because golf is good for keeping social distance if done in the correct way. There are a few other changes we've made which have really benefited us. First, our food & beverage department is still open, but only on a "togo" basis, for both lunch and dinner, with daily specials and package beverage sales. In addition, our Director of Golf and General Manager are recording weekly PSAs - posted on our various social media platforms and sent out to members alerting them to any changes we've made from the prior week as it's an everchanging situation. Finally, our PGA instructors have either canceled if they felt it was unsafe or are coaching from a safe distance and following the guidelines provided on PGA.org. The bottom line is that we've been able to sustain one of the safest sports you can play during this pandemic - golf - while taking common sense measures to keep things as safe as possible and being resourceful with member engagement. Doing so has allowed our membership a much-needed respite during this time of great angst, either at the course or from the comfort of their own homes.

Leveraging Education to Address Your Limitations Over the past three years PGA of America Career Consultants have conducted thousands of meetings with PGA Members and Associates across the country with one goal in mind; how can we help this Member or Associate enhance their personal and professional life? The formula for identifying what we can do and how we can help is quite simple. It boils down to three very simple questions: 1) What do you really care about? When you know what you value most, it becomes easier TO align your actions and your work in support of what you hold most dear. 2) What do you want to accomplish? The goals you have, whether they be personal or professional should align with what you care about most. 3) What’s holding you back? If you can identify the delta between where you are and where you want to be, it becomes easier to begin to develop and execute plans to address the difference between the two. As we help you work through those questions, our jobs as consultants becomes very easy. We simply get to ask the question: How can I help? Very often that help comes in the form of developing plans to address those things which hold people back from accomplishing the things that align with what they really care about. The limitations we see usually fall into a handful of categories: 1) Values - The things that are most important to you don’t align with your current situation 2) Geographical - The places you are willing to call home limit your opportunities 3) Financial - Financial needs exclude certain opportunities 4) Health - Physical limitations prohibit you from pursuing certain paths 5) Skills & Education - You may not yet be qualified for the things you really want to do While some limitations will require significantly more time and commitment to address, your Skills and Education are completely under your control and can be addressed immediately. Your first step is identifying and embracing your skill or education gaps, as denying them makes it significantly more difficult to navigate your career. Once the gaps have been identified, education targeted around deficient areas is the quickest remedy. Once you have made the commitment to fill a skill or education gap, I encourage you to make another commitment and adopt the habit of Lifelong Learning. In the words of author Seth Godin, “The habit of doing more than is necessary can only be earned through practice. And the habit is priceless.” Your PGA Career Consultant is uniquely qualified and fully committed to helping you become the best version of yourself; and the decision to work with yours is completely in your control.

PGA REACH Nebraska, the Foundation and charitable arm of the Nebraska Section PGA is excited to announce two newly elected Board Members. Country Club of Lincoln’s Al Peterson and Bent Tree Golf Club’s Tony Driscoll are the latest additions to the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Al Peterson is a PGA Golf Professional at the Country Club of Lincoln and he prides himself on being outgoing and thrives in a setting where he can connect with the members at his club. Peterson gained great experience working at several other facilities including Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, MO. One of his biggest achievements was just recently when he was named Nebraska PGA’s 2019 Assistant PGA Professional of the Year. “One of my goals as an African American PGA Member is to really try to diversify the game of golf specifically in Nebraska. I understand that the youth is the key to growing the game of golf and I believe PGA Reach is a perfect outlet to accomplish that goal. I am excited to network, build relationships and learn as much as I can to better myself,” Peterson said as he’s excited to take on his new role. Anthony Driscoll is the Head PGA Golf Professional at Bent Tree Golf Club in Council Bluffs. Like Peterson, Driscoll was a graduate of the Professional Golf Management program at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. Driscoll began his career by working at the City of Omaha golf courses as well with The First Tee. His life has always revolved around the game of golf and the strong passion motivates him every day as a PGA Professional. “I am very excited to be part of the Nebraska PGA Foundation. Joining a group of
talented individuals working together to help others through excellent key pillars of success is a great experience. I look forward to helping the best PGA Section in the country continue their mission in serving others through the great game we all love,” Driscoll said after receiving the news. PGA REACH Nebraska and the Board of Directors are more than excited to welcome both Peterson and Driscoll to the team. “Tony's passion about the game of golf is second to none. He has been involved with our Golf N Schools program since the beginning and continues to offer a helping hand when needed. Al is a young and motivated PGA Professional that will make an instant impact with our Foundation. Al's passion to make the game more diverse will directly align with our mission of PGA REACH Nebraska and I can't wait to get them involved,” said Seth Scollard, the Managing Director of PGA REACH Nebraska. PGA REACH Nebraska is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization and the charitable arm of the Nebraska Section PGA. PGA REACH Nebraska is program based and supported by the Nebraska Section PGA Golf Professionals. The Foundation has 3 core pillars of focus: Military, Youth and Inclusion. Each pillar is supported by programs that are executed to carry out our mission. Peterson and Driscoll will join the following members of PGA REACH Nebraska's Board of Directors; Mike Antonio, PGA, Tony Pesavento, PGA, Nathan Kalin, PGA, Gil Russell, PGA, Dawn, Neujahr, PGA, Mike Schuchart, PGA, David Honnens, PGA, Marion Bendon, Mike Mackintosh, Thomas Kelley, Doug Patterson and Greg Davis.

The Four “Gs” – Our Daily Outlook on Life I consider myself to be one of the most sincerely positive people of all the folks I meet and certainly surround myself with day to day. I take a great deal of pride in looking at things with a “glass is half full mentality” and forwarding that same sentiment to everyone with hopes they will do the same. It makes the world more fun to experience from my standpoint. The last few weeks, every Wednesday morning at 8AM, the Nebraska PGA conducts a video call with all PGA members invited, lead by David Honnens and President Gil Russell. The calls are extremely well organized and prepared by your leadership with national and regional figure heads periodically being asked to speak on one topic or another. On April 22nd, PGA CEO, Seth Waugh, and Aaron Davis, former Nebraska Cornhusker standout and renowned speaker, coach, trainer and attitude expert, were asked to speak. It was a very productive hour. On that same call, I was asked to share the latest news and updates in our District and from the National PGA. I can recall vividly that I had to share some NOT SO GREAT news that 501c6’s and 7’s were again omitted from the latest round of legislation. Additionally, I covered a few other topics that clearly were negative in nature. This is part of life. However, looking back, I failed to end my message with some positivity which I normally attempt to do. (Nice going Schneider!). Then following me was Aaron David. Woaaahhhhh! Wow was he a shot in the arm I needed. He made many great points but ended with the simplest message that reached even my normally positive soul. The Four G’s. Everyday when things around you are filled with negativity and uncontrolled chaos, focus hard on the Four G’s. This message is so simple and yet hit me a like a lightning bolt. #1 – What was the GOAL for today? (Set one and get after it. Did you accomplish it?) #2 – What was the “GLITCH” today? (Express it….then address it. Then move on)
#3 – What is the GOAL for tomorrow? (just a 24-hour achievable and meaningful personal or professional goal) #4 – What am I GRATEFUL for? (write it down and verbalize it) These are extremely simplistic, but work! It sets my mind right and allows me to take on all the things I should and can handle. Thank you, Mr. Davis! During these extremely trying times…….Remember the Four G’s. They will help get you through to the next day.

I am truly honored and blessed to be named the 2019 Assistant Professional of the Year in the Nebraska Section. On the road to gaining my membership, I have learned so many valuable lessons that will stick with me through my entire career. As a PGA Professional, we all have multiple responsibilities at our facilities. What makes us stand out is our ability to accomplish these tasks in order to fulfill a member’s needs. After becoming a Callaway Master Fitter in 2019, there are always fittings on my calendar throughout the year. With the addition of our Performance Center, we are given the ability to continuously fit all year long. Since starting at CCL I have helped to increase club fitting sales by 13%. With my experience through the years, I have had the opportunity to fit all golfers of various skill levels. One must remember that there are many different types of ways to fit someone for golf clubs. I strongly believe relating to the person on an individual level will help make the fitting flow smoothly while remaining cautious not to turn the fitting into a lesson. The saying “Look good, feel good, play good”, starts with your appearance. I pride myself on our golf shop looking the best! This includes tidying and refolding constantly throughout the day, changing mannequins frequently, and never forgetting to vacuum. This may sound simple but it truly makes a difference. If you want things to sell in your golf shop, you have to be willing to wear what you carry. I can honestly say about 40% of the items in my closet are carried in our shop. I’m never afraid to walk a member to my favorite line and show them new styles. Our members really appreciate an “out of the box” experience. When a new line arrives, we contact a member that is likely to purchase and/or need what was recently delivered. Showing them the pieces that are still packaged in the box before the items are even inventoried, gives them that special feeling. These little points are some of the reasons for my being a member of a team that wins a National Merchandising Award. I have full confidence in saying that communication is one of the key facets to success and among the reasons I am successful at the Country Club of Lincoln. Member relations is so important in any field, but at CCL our focus is going above and beyond. My ability to communicate is what sets me apart. This is a skill that isn’t taught but learned through experience and time. I look forward to my continued education and camaraderie from my fellow PGA Professionals in the Nebraska Section. Al Peterson III, PGA Country Club of Lincoln
