Engaging the Entire Family Numbers don’t lie Many of us that love the game of golf were probably introduced to the game at a young age by our parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, friends, etc. Most of us enjoyed it from the first time we set foot on a golf course and grew to love the game. The fun and excitement that it brings, the social enjoyment and the challenges that come from tournaments or setting out to beat your personal best are just a few of the reasons why we become so fond of this traditional game. This is true for the 6 million plus of us that play on a regular basis, and a little more than 6 million more people that play 1-2 times a month. Another 12 million are those who golf but only choose to do so a handful of times a year. Although more than 24 million current golfers sounds like a substantial number, there is still another population of 13 million that have interest but have never swung a golf club before. Then there is the other 13 million that have played before but don’t anymore. This puts into perspective the potential we have as PGA Professionals and aspiring professionals like me to grow the game of golf. If we converted every single person in the United States that is interested in the game into current golfers, we would have roughly 50 million avid golfers. Numbers don’t lie. Keys to success The biggest influence we have on engaging the entire family is to focus on women and youth. With time, costs, other activities and family in our lives; leisure activities such as golf tend to take a back seat. As the world continues to change we need to evolve in the game of golf, and conform into something that will bring the whole family to the golf course and most importantly keep them coming back. Kids are involved in multiple activities in the summer and they usually include team sports and are almost always in activities that incorporate playing with friends. Youth value activities which incorporate friends and fun. TEAM Golf is a great way to be a part of a team, foster competitiveness and most importantly a great way to have fun with their friends. Getting ladies out to golf and enjoying themselves on the course is arguably the most effective and vital part to a successful growth in your golf membership and participation. Creating new tees and skill appropriate leagues helps them enjoy their experience at your facility. Especially since most of them are looking for a social aspect without the pressure of busy times and people watching them. Time allocation of your facility is essential to getting them onto the course. Finding slower times to set aside for both ladies and juniors is a way to create business and participation for your facility. If time slots are not being used on particular days, that is the perfect opportunity to get beginners and on the course and create new ladies leagues, get golf ready retention leagues or couples outings. Get Golf Ready is a perfect program to implement when trying to grow membership or golfers at a facility. Consumers view the program as a true value while it also creates a great revenue source for the Professional. In five short lessons they experience everything from the clubhouse to the course. Offering additional player development programs at different stages of their game will keep them coming back and improve their game such as Get Golf Ready 2.0 up to weekly beginner leagues. To create explosive results it can be beneficial to target these two consumer groups together through family Get Golf Ready or Parent-Child outings. The parents can have fun on the course with their children, and on the flip side the children can spark interest in the parent when they see that they are enjoying it and bring them to the course as well. Family fun nights are a way to get the family to the facility to spend time and an evening or afternoon at the golf course without taking up the golf course. Setting up a dinner for families at your club and making your own putt-putt course is just the beginning. The possibilities are endless when you start thinking about just getting potential golfers to your facility and gradually getting them on the golf course rather than just simply offering private lessons. These family fun nights are a less intimidating entry to golf for many women and children and a great way to introduce them to all golf has to offer. When all of you are looking at your schedules I encourage you to set times aside at your facility for family golf programming. It is a great benefit for the golfers and increasing facility revenue especially when you are able to set aside the times during slow periods of the day. As the “Experts in the Game and Business of Golf” the power of education is the single most important way to help enhance and transform our industry. Many of today’s thriving industries outside of the golf industry have alluded to the fact that there is a strong correlation between the economic viability of an industry and its education attained by those who work in it. The current MSR cycle is about 2 weeks away from coming to a close and it is a priority of the Section to provide meaningful educational opportunities for you to meet these requirements. To review your current MSR status, please go to www.pgalinks.com and login. Under “your membership data” will be your current credits earned and what is still required. To receive MSR’s for your Player Development Program, please complete the “MSR Report Form” and submit it to Nebraska Section Player Development Coordinator, Joe Canny, PGA at jcanny@pgahq.com or by fax 402-489-1785.

Get Golf Ready at Miracle Hill Golf and Tennis Club Get Golf Ready is one of the cornerstones of our player development program at Miracle Hill Golf and Tennis Club in Omaha, Nebraska. We feel that we have had success with our program simply because we make it a priority. We explain to our staff the importance of bringing in new players, not only to our facility, but to the game of golf itself. Get Golf Ready is emphasized to our entire staff during regular meetings. We ask them to mention and enthusiastically sell the program anytime an opportunity arises. We ask this of not only our teaching staff, but as well as food and beverage, outside service, and range attendants at Miracle Hill. We promote our program with signage that is visible on the way into the golf shop, throughout the club house, and, most importantly, on the practice range. We describe Get Golf Ready in all our multi-media advertising as a fun, relaxed, and affordable way to experience the game of golf. The classes are held on the most visible part of our practice range so our guests can see a relaxed learning environment with a lot of fun, laughter, and unique teaching techniques. We also feel it is very important to give our new players “on course” opportunities once they have gone through the instructional part of the program. We offer Get Golf Ready playing instruction on Saturday mornings before our afternoon shot gun starts. We can accommodate up to 25 students for this activity. One of our teaching staff accompanies each group of students while they play 3 holes to facilitate improving skills like ready golf, continuous putting, and generally how to negotiate their way around a golf course while having fun doing it. Monday evenings are Get Golf Ready play nights at Miracle Hill for the students that have been through Level One or higher of our program. We have anywhere from 16 to 28 people sign up weekly to play. Also, there are nights that we put together exciting formats like 2 person scrambles or “play with the pro” to expose new golfers to different activities golf has to offer while building lasting relationships. Also, a staff member chaperones the group in order to help provide a fun and enjoyable experience for all golfers. As with all of our programming, our goal is to create a culture that follows our motto: Learn, Practice, and Play. Mike Fauver, PGA Director of Player Development Miracle Hill Golf and Tennis Club

AimPoint is physics-based green reading system that is being utilized by golfers at all levels to assist them in determining the correct starting line for their putts on sloping greens. At the professional level, Adam Scott, Stacy Lewis and Lydia Ko are notable devotees of AimPoint. If you are interested in learning more about how AimPoint works, for starters, you can find a few informational videos on www.youtube.com. One of those videos features Lydia Ko going through her AimPoint routine, click here to view. As shown in the adjacent photograph, in her routine, Lydia walks about a third of the way to the hole and stands near her estimated line of putt to determine the degree to which the green is sloping at that point. The AimPoint system relies on the player’s ability to feel the degree to which the ground is sloping by using his or her feet. The potential Rules issue pertaining to Lydia’s AimPoint slope assessment routine pertains to the proximity of her feet to her line of putt. According to Rule 16-1a [Touching Line of Putt], except for a limited number of situations, the player must not touch the line of putt. More to the point, Decision 16-1a/12 [Player Walks on Line of Putt] points out that a player has breached Rule 16-1a if he or she intentionally walks on the line of putt. The “slippery slope” that the player faces using the AimPoint system is trying to get the most accurate assessment of the slope without standing on the line of putt. What complicates the issue is the Definition of “Line of Putt” which states, “The “line of putt” is the line that the player wishes his ball to take after a stroke on the putting green. … the line of putt includes a reasonable distance on either side of the intended line.” Earlier this year, the following statement was released by The R&A in response to concerns that had been raised about methods of reading a putting green where players stand astride or stand or walk alongside their estimated line of putt to assess the slope of the green and the break of the putt: Under Rule 16-1a, the player must not touch the line of putt. (There are exceptions to Rule 16-1a, but none of them relate to methods of reading the putting green or determining a line of putt.) The “line of putt” is defined in the Rules as “the line that the player wishes his ball to take after a stroke on the putting green” including “a reasonable distance on either side of the intended line”. The penalty for a breach of Rule 16-1a is loss of hole in match play or two strokes in stroke play. Consequently, players who use such green-reading methods should take care to avoid walking on their line of putt in order to avoid the risk of penalty under Rule 16-1a. The same is true of any other practices used by players to gain information when their ball is on the putting green, such as walking alongside the line of putt to measure the distance to the hole or standing at a midpoint to the hole and hovering the putter over the line of putt. To avoid the risk of penalty, players or their caddies who take any such actions should take care to avoid touching the line of putt, which includes a reasonable distance on either side of the intended line, with their feet, the club, or anything else.

I am from Chester, South Dakota, which is a very small town just north of Sioux Falls. Growing up I always enjoyed playing and watching sports and continue to try and keep up with what I can. I have enjoyed golfing since I was little, and enjoyed teaching my friends how to play and how to swing even more than playing itself. This led me to the University of Nebraska where I am currently a senior in the PGA Golf Management Program. The Nebraska PGA Section Office will be my final internship allowing me to graduate this August. I have been lucky enough to get a chance to work at a wide range of courses in the Midwest from North Dakota to Oklahoma, public to private. For the public courses that I interned at I worked under Dan Tannahill, PGA at King’s Walk in Grand Forks, North Dakota. In Oklahoma I was able to complete another internship at a semi-private club under Rob Yanovitch, PGA at Shangri-La Golf Club and resort in Monkey Island. Last summer I was fortunate enough to work for a private club in Kansas City under Todd Stice, PGA at Oakwood Country Club. As I was getting packed and ready to come back to Nebraska for school this year, my girlfriend and I were blessed with a baby girl, Sienna. This summer I’m looking forward to the new chapter of my golf journey, in working for the Nebraska PGA Section.

Ryan Vermeer Captures Stableford Event

Ashland, NE. – Finally sunny skies and breezy conditions broke a streak of mother-nature dumping measurable rain falls and postponing Section Pro-Am’s. Despite these challenging conditions, one professional, Ryan Vermeer of Tiburon G.C. used a hot putter to capture the low professional title of the Miller and Sons (E-Z-GO) Pro-Am. This event featured modified Stableford scoring and Vermeer used this to his advantage by making five birdies and one bogey to post a tournament best 27 points. Finishing in a tie for second at 22 points was Jon Petersen, PGA of Tiburon G.C. and Nick Wanderscheid, PGA of Green Valley G.C. Rounding out the top five was Scott Holly, PGA of UNL-PGM program at 20 points and reining Player of The Year, Shane Zywiec, PGA of Seward C.C. at 19 points. View more.

Antonio and Wiemers Capture Mizuno Pro/Assistants Championship

Omaha, NE. – Rain off and on combined with breezy conditions provided Nebraska Section PGA Professionals a great test of golf at the Mizuno Pro/Assistant Championship at Oak Hills C.C. Despite these challenging conditions, Mike Antonio, PGA and Chris Wiemers, PGA of Happy Hollow Club made a plethora of birdies to capture the 36-hole four-ball championship at nine-under-par 133. Finishing two shots back was last year’s champions, Jon Petersen, PGA and Ryan Vermeer of Tiburon G.C. Also finishing in a tie for second was the team of Scott Harmelink, PGA and Nick Wanderscheid, PGA of Green Valley G.C. This win for Antonio and Wiemers marks the fourth time that these two have teamed up to win the championship (2008, 2010, 2013 and 2015) and this is now the eighth time Antonio has his name engraved on the trophy. Antonio won his first Pro/Assistant Championship in 1984 when he teamed up with Jim White, PGA MP. View more.
