As the “Experts in the Game and Business of Golf” the power of education is the single most important way to help enhance and transform our industry. Many of today’s thriving industries outside of the golf industry have alluded to the fact that there is a strong correlation between the economic viability of an industry and its education attained by those who work in it. It is a priority of the Section to provide meaningful educational opportunities for you to meet these requirements. To review your current MSR status, please go to www.pgalinks.com and login. Under “your membership data” will be your current credits earned and what is still required. To receive MSR’s for your Player Development Program, please complete the “MSR Report Form” and submit it to Nebraska Section Player Development Coordinator, Joe Canny, PGA at jcanny@pgahq.com or by fax 402-489-1785.

As PGA Professionals, we are always looking at ways to maximize our rounds and revenues and at times it is easy to get caught up chasing every dollar. We also care about the future of the game and our own futures in the golf industry, every day we have the chance to impact both. At Miracle Hill we started looking at our un-used tee time inventory and ways we could not just fill them for a day but for years to come. One of the ideas we felt strongest about was a way to get parents and children on the golf course together as a team and at a time that would not interfere with other weekend activities such as baseball, soccer and other mid-day and afternoon activities. What all this became is the Miracle Hill Parent-Child golf league. The league combines 1 parent and 1 child in a team format, the kids will play from a variety of tees based on their age. League play will be on Saturday mornings off our back 9 (this was a time that has not booked in the past) teeing off between 7:00 and 7:30. I wanted to be able to get the parents and children on the course early so they could play golf and be back home for the rest of the days activities. The teams will play a variety of formats from scramble, to best ball, to alternate shot. The team score each week will be awarded points based on their finish position, the team with the most points at the end of the season will be our champions. For parents with multiple children who want to play we allow the kids and the parents to interchange so that Mom can play one week and Dad the next and the kids as well, they are household teams. The logistics are simple. It is 9 holes of play each week. We charge only the parent for the 9-hole green and cart fee and the kids play free. The league begins in the middle of May and finishes in early August. The decision to keep the league limited to 12 teams was for us to judge the interest level and to keep one of our goals in place which was to offer golf early in the day and not to interfere with players making the turn. We will end the league on the final Saturday with a tournament and awards and the option to keep playing after school starts. We are very excited to get this new program started along with our other new junior programing and are looking forward to a great 2014 season. Player Development MSRs We are coming up on one year left in our current MSR Cycle and it is now crunch time. The Nebraska PGA Section has two meetings and a number of education sessions prior to the deadline which will be great to attend in order to earn those required MSRs. Another way to earn MSRs is through Player Development Programming, an activity you are probably already doing! Below are a few more ways to earn MSRs for the Professionals of the Nebraska PGA Section: Get Golf Ready You can earn MSRs for Get Golf Ready and beginner group golf instruction. All Get Golf Ready MSRs count under the required category and can be earned going back to the 2012 season. Here is the breakdown:  Get Golf Ready Class – 2 MSRs per session  Get Golf Ready 2 Classes (Retention Classes) – 3 MSRs per session  Get Golf Ready Leagues/Outings – 3 MSRs per league/outing For every three students in your Get Golf Ready classes another professional can receive the above required MSR Credits. I’d also recommend submitting your class schedule for 2014 in order to receive your credits as the classes conclude. PGA Sports Academy The PGA Sports Academy is the PGA of America’s branded junior program which incorporates Fitness & Nutrition, Near-Golf Experiences and Physical Assessments with the traditional golf skill and etiquette instruction. Facilities can receive 2 Required MSR Credits for each PGA Sports Academy run over the last two years and new for 2014. For every three students in your PGA Sports Academy Program another PGA Professional can receive these two MSRs. NJGT TEAM GOLF Nebraska PGA Professionals with NJGT TEAM GOLF teams will receive 3 PGA Required MSRs for 2014. Two PGA Professionals per team are eligible for these MSRs. In order to be considered a team the facility must participate in at least one NJGT TEAM GOLF event prior to the NJGT TEAM GOLF Championship on August 6th. Drive, Chip & Putt Professionals looking for PGA Required MSRs can volunteer for the Local and Sub-Regional Drive, Chip & Putt Competitions here in the Nebraska PGA Section. Professionals can earn up to 2 MSRs per competition. Click Here for the Drive, Chip & Putt Competitions in our area. Growth of the Game Volunteer Work If you volunteer for an Amateur or Professional Golf Association event, work at a Neighborhood Golf Outing or participate in another growth of the game program you may be eligible for General PGA MSRs which count toward your total category. Please contact Joe Canny, PGA at the Nebraska PGA Section Office (402-489-7760) for help posting Player Development MSRs, to learn more about NJGT TEAM GOLF or volunteer for a Drive, Chip & Putt Competition.

When working with an employer on posting a Head Professional, Director of Golf or General Manager position, the employer has lamented to me on numerous occasions their previous employee was lacking in the visibility area of their job. When I press the employer to explain, they simply say, he or she (the employee) was just not VISIBLE! I realize expectations are sometimes unrealistic when it comes to being visible. This begs the question to the employer, “When do I need to be at the club or what are your expectations for me”? Start the dialogue today before it becomes a problem. If the employer isn’t going to give you direction, here are some ideas to potentially think about. 1. Do you make a “bank run” daily? When are you doing it? Is it possible to have someone else do it for you? Are the errands you run necessary? 2. Are you “above” answering the phone or checking people in or being at the counter from time to time? 3. Do you ever meet/greet people in the parking lot when they arrive? There is no better time to make a positive impression than when a member arrives at the club. 4. What are you doing for Ladies Day? “Delegating”? Make sure you are available and treat this day as an opportunity to be seen. 5. Are you there only to “hand out the awards”? Make sure this doesn’t become a habit! Members do notice this phenomenon! 6. Do you ever start groups on the first tee? The banter and pleasantries exchanged can be fun and show you care. 7. Do you make runs around the course? Make the run not necessarily just for pace of play reasons. Maybe have your clubs with you and play a few holes with a group. 8. Do make an effort to “work the range” from time to time. Offering swing tips and timely advice can go a long way in improving your stock at the club. I know there are many more ideas that some of you are doing to be visible. Make a concerted effort this year to increase your visibility at your club - it could make a difference!

Non - PGA Facilities to Deliver Get Golf Ready Programs - President Bishop Encourages Expansion During the past six months, the PGA Board of Directors has been discussing the merits and challenges associated with expanding the scope of Get Golf Ready as an introductory tool for all facilities and new golfers in our country. While Get Golf Ready has showcased steady growth during its first five years as a consumer facing product, we have not yet seen the level of growth in new players needed to have a meaningful impact on our respective businesses. The PGA Board of Directors has thoroughly vetted the concept of non-PGA facilities delivering entry level Get Golf Ready programs and recently approved the requirements that, once completed, will allow non-PGA facilities to be involved in the delivery of entry level Get Golf Ready programs. The PGA Board took this decision very seriously and Directors were encouraged to solicit input from their respective Sections before a decision was made. Ultimately, the Board approved this concept. Click here to continue reading and watch a short video that further explains the value of expanding the use of Get Golf Ready industry-wide. Thank you for your attention to this matter, and best wishes for a successful 2014 golf season.
