From the Desk of NGJT Director Joe Canny, PGA The 2015 season is now behind us and I want to make sure to thank each and every one of you for your participation this year. It was an exciting season which included record low rounds, record turn-out events, 3 hole-in-ones and more!

This off-season I look forward to working with our facilities, sponsors, parents, juniors and others to find new and fun ways to improve our tour for 2016 when I look forward to seeing you on the course again.

Race to The Field Club of Omaha The 9-hole division Championship presented by Stonehouse Golf Collections was hosted at The Field Club of Omaha. The oldest country club west of the Mississippi River, the historic Field Club, was the site of the 1941 US Amateur Championship as well as the home course for Nebraska legend, Johnny Goodman. This beautiful tree-lined course accommodated a perfect ending to another great season. July 23rd marked the end of the Points Race, which provided select golfers an invitation to the NJGT Championship.

Congratulations to all who participated in this year’s race and best of luck next year as well!

Often called Nebraska’s Home for Junior Golf, Fremont Golf Club played host to the 2015 NJGT TEAM GOLF Championship.

A 16-team field of our top TEAM GOLF teams competed in a pooled competition ending in a round robin championship for the coveted NJGT TEAM GOLF Championship Belt.

The summer is already over and young athletes are heading off to school again.

For most of you that means: on to the next sport! Unfortunately, it won’t be long until the weather forces us to put away the golf clubs for the winter. Since school is starting up again and the Junior Tour and Championships are finished that means for some of you the high school golf season starts where for others competitive golf is put on the back burner until the next NJGT Season. Hopefully, you can all take some time out of your schedule to do some training for next year’s golf season as it is very important to train during the offseason if you want to improve your game. Here are some training tips to get you started.

‘s Tour Tips

Indoor Putting Putting is the easiest way to lower that handicap and scoring average. Now, with all of the indoor putting holes and cups there are numerous ways to practice putting inside your own home. Regardless of space available in your home for various putting products, all will be able to concentrate on rhythm to develop a consistent stroke. If you want to improve during the offseason implement this 2-3 times a week for roughly 15 minutes.

Improve Flexibility, Core, and strength Improving flexibility and strength will help your golf game tremendously. This is how you will gain the distance on your shots making that shot into the green easier. In your strength training focus on the golf specific exercises provided in prior newsletters as well as full body exercises. When your golf season begins next year you want to focus more on those specific exercises that will increase distance.

Cardio Some of you will start playing football, volleyball, basketball, etc., so you will already be getting some great cardio exercise. This is excellent as cross training should improve your golf game. In golf, you typically only walk and swing but in the long run you are actually walking a number of miles during the round and throughout the season. Having a good cardio vascular system is needed so we do not get tired by the end of the round—especially if there ends up being playoff holes. If you cannot run or jog, simply walking a few miles is a great way to stay active. Any type of cardio including walking, stair stepper, treadmill, elliptical and push-ups all work great. Remember to ask your doctor before you start a full on exercise program and make sure you are in good health to start the program.

Fitness Facts PGA Sports Academy Fitness Tips The off-season is just as important as the regular season when it comes to training.

Off-season training is when you can really start to develop a stronger body and gain distance. In the summer months for us we are busy on the golf course and driving range and playing in tournaments. When we play all the time it is hard to focus on strength training so most of the time we exercise to maintain the shape we were in at the start of the season. This winter, I challenge you to do these exercises and notice how you hit the ball 5 to 15 yards further when you return in the spring for the golf season.

Grip Strength

Grab a tennis ball and alternating between hands, squeeze the tennis ball as hard as you can for 4-5 seconds.

Do this 4-5 times. This will help your forearm and grip strength. Something that is consistent about long ball hitters is that they have strong forearms and a strong grip.

Leg Strength

The legs are the foundation for every sport, and golf is no different. Lunges are an easy exercise and all you need is a weight in both hands and step forward with your right leg, then lower yourself down until the right knee is over your right food and the right thigh is parallel with the ground. Now repeat with your left leg forward. Do 8-10 steps with each leg.

Core

Your core is where you get your stability and in turn means that you can swing harder and still be controlled and balanced. Most of you know what sit ups are; do these twice during your workout at least until you feel it in your stomach.

Rotation

Getting rotation and a full shoulder turn is a big part of flexibility. The swing functions more properly the more your shoulders and body can move. Sit in a stable chair with no wheels and hold a golf club across your chest.

Rotate your shoulders as far as possible clockwise while keeping your knees together and pointing forward.

Alternate between clockwise and counter-clockwise 10 times.

These exercises are activities that all skill level golfers can perform and continue to do to improve. All it takes is a little bit of determination to achieve your goals and become a better player.
