From the Desk of NGJT Director Joe Canny, PGA The NJGT Season has almost come to an end and the school year is right around the corner. For those of you who are in high school, best of luck with your upcoming golf season. I look forward to seeing you again at the State Competitions. For those who have aspirations of College Golf , remember to keep your game in shape but also take academics very seriously. Good grades set you up to have more options and can often be valuable in the recruiting process. The NJGT Season may be finished for the older divisions but we still have two championships left! We are excited to have the NJGT Championship presented by Stonehouse Golf at the Field Club for our 9-hole divisions and the NJGT TEAM GOLF Championship presented by Five Points Bank at Fremont Golf Club. We wish you all the best of luck and can’t wait to see how this next week shapes up! As we move towards Fall I encourage you to keep playing a lot of golf. Though the competitive season may be over for most of you make sure to go out and enjoy the game with your friends and family. Golf is a game to be enjoyed and a wonderful way to spend time with those close to you! Next up for Team NJGT is to start planning for the 2016 season. Race to The Field Club of Omaha The 9-hole division championship presented by Stonehouse Golf Collections will be hosted at The Field Club of Omaha for 2015. The oldest country club west of the Mississippi River, historic Field Club was the site of the 1941 US Amateur Championship as well as the home course for Nebraska legend Johnny Goodman. This tree-lined course will be the perfect ending to what looks to be another great season. July 23rd marked the end of the Points Race, which has provided select golfers an invitation to the NJGT Championship. Invitation figures are posted on the points page of NJGT.org. Amazing play at Omaha Country Club this week. Great to see many of our students compete and do so well! Something about playing in golf championships makes us anxious, nervous and full of self-doubt. It can be hard to perform when we know our game is out there for all interested to see. Here are a few tips to help you in preparing how to handle these emotions:
‘s Tour Tips
Jack Nicklaus said “The difference between being nervous and being scared is being prepared.” Prepare yourself through focused and specific practice. Even if you can’t play every day spend some time with a club in front of a mirror or in your hands to instill confidence.
Arrive early to the tournament to hit a few balls and roll a few putts. Make sure you are hitting those shots you will need to hit on course and not just 10 drivers and 10 8-irons.
Spend extra time on the putting green working on long putts. Getting the speed of the green is key and only focusing on short putts can rattle the confidence.
Follow your course routine on the practice facility before an event. Hopefully these tips can help you be successful and keep you in control of your emotions at your next NJGT or High School Championship. Fitness Facts PGA Sports Academy Fitness Tips The fall is an excellent time to begin your preparation for next golf season. Four months of winter is right around the corner which gives us opportunities and time to work on swing flaws and incorporate new techniques. While working on my golf swing, I also use the winter months to train my body for the next golf season. With all the commitments we have in the summer it can be difficult to keep up the fitness aspect of golf. So each Fall I set my workout goals for the off-season and start working into it slowly. Each NJGT Newsletter we provide you with different stretches and strength exercises which can help your golf game. Although it’s good advice, it is better to know what muscles are important to target for the golf swing. Below is a list of major muscle groups that are important to keep strong and stretched for your best golf results. These muscle groups may be the most used so always include cross training of other muscle groups to prevent injury. Key Upper Body Muscle Groups Pectoralis major (Chest) Latissimus dorsi (Back) -The two above allow you to be strong while bringing your arms across the body and in the air Core -What brings force from all areas of your body to the swing Forearms -Transmits that force created by your body into the ball Key Lower Body Muscle Group Gluteus Maximus (Bum) -Responsible for hip rotation and extension during both parts of the swing through to your finish -MOST IMPORTANT FOR POWER!!! Remember to train smart and safely. All workouts should be partnered with good nutrition and hydration!
