From the Desk of NGJT Director Joe Canny, PGA The NJGT Tournament Season is coming to a close. Only one week of NJGT Farmers Mutual Events left and all GolfTEC Premier Championships complete. I wanted to make sure to thank these sponsors for their years of support of the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour. Because of them we are able to provide the improvements you have seen over the years with medals, gifts, staff and the like.

As we move into the final week we will be working on a very tight schedule to post invites to our NJGT & NJGT TEAM GOLF Championships. Race to Omaha Country Club This year’s 18-hole division NJGT Championship presented by Stonehouse Golf Collections will be hosted at Omaha Country Club, site of the 2013 US Senior Open. The course, redesigned by Perry Maxwell, sits among the nation’s finest private clubs including Augusta National, Prairie Dunes, Southern Hills and Colonial – all of which are Maxwell designs. The top point winners in each division as of July 23rd will earn their spot in the field for this majestic golf course. Invitation numbers are posted on the points page of NJGT.org.

Race to The Field Club of Omaha The 9-hole division championship presented by Stonehouse Golf Collections will be hosted at The Field Club of Omaha for 2015. The oldest country club west of the Mississippi River, historic Field Club was the site of the 1941 US Amateur Championship as well as the home course for Nebraska legend Johnny Goodman. This tree-lined course will be the perfect ending to what looks to be another great season. Golfers will earn points through July 23rd which will position them for an invite to the NJGT Championship. With a little rain delay, our last Premier Championship is in the books. It has been great seeing all of the young athletes’ hard work pay off throughout the summer and progressively seeing lower scores now that mother nature is giving us a few days during the week to practice and play in tournaments. With the end of the year coming up and our abundance of tournaments in late July due to rescheduling, it’s the perfect time to work on the mental game since most of you have had plenty of hours spent on the physical aspect of practicing and the end of the year tournaments are coming up. Here are just a few things to think about when playing and practicing:

‘s Tour Tips

Practice the Way You Play When you are on the driving range, short game area or putting green use the same pre-shot routine that you will use while playing on the course or in the tournament. If you have a pre shot routine when you hit full shots on the course, pick out a target or flagstick on the range to aim and treat it like a regular green. With a driver imagine a fairway. If you are warming up before your round and you have played at the facility previously, right at the end of your practice session play out the first hole on the driving range. This will get you better prepared for your round and get in the mindset of playing on the course rather than just hitting golf balls on the range.

Let it Go I am sure most of you have been told this time and time again, but it is critical to keep yourself emotionally even -keeled. Everyone has a bad shot or a bad round. A bigger percentage of shots are going to be misses rather than purely struck golf shots. Keeping your chin up and not getting angry or upset at one bad shot is going to keep your scores lower and will help those of us that fall apart after one bad hole because of a shot out of bounds or in the hazard. Concentrate solely on the shot at hand and forget about what has happened. The past won’t dictate the future if you don’t let it. Let it go.

Visualize A great deal of us that play golf have a pre-shot routine that consists of making sure we are set up correctly and aimed towards our target. This is very important in preparing for a golf shot. Visualizing a golf shot as you are looking down that fairway or onto the green before you set up to the ball is going to help you get mentally prepared to hit the golf shot whether it is a draw, fade or a knockdown for us in the Midwest. The great Jack Nicklaus said that before every shot he would visualize the shot he wanted to hit and mentally see or feel how the swing needed to be. This helps clear your mind of the distractions around you such as previous shots or anxiousness when you are playing well and focus on your shot at hand.

Centura Hills Golf Club is an elite 18-hole golf course in Cairo, Nebraska located just 13 miles from Grand Island. Centura Hills Golf Club provides an excellent countryside golf experience with the 7th as the signature hole and the course’s most challenging due to its length, slope, Cairo, Nebraska terrain, native rough, out of bounds and creek right in front of the green. It begins with a few friendly holes but be careful of ‘Amen Bend’. This is a section of the golf course in which a nearby church shares the view of the creek that bends through the course.

We have rescheduled our NJGT event to July 17th. Centura Hills is a wonderful golf course and we hope you can fit it into your summer schedule!

Fitness Facts PGA Sports Academy Fitness Tips Many of us do not think about eating healthy and staying hydrated as a major role in our golf game. When you watch PGA TOUR Professionals on TV have you ever seen them drinking soda or eating a fast food snack before or during their round? No. They have a strict nutrition diet and a workout program geared to make them the best athletes they can be. Although we are not PGA TOUR stars yet, a great way to actually help shave strokes in the meantime is by staying hydrated and eating healthy.

On the golf course, we recommend: 1.) Cutting Out Soda Pop Golf is one of the few sports out there that makes a player mentally focus on and off for 4-5 hours. Just because you may not feel tired or weak physically doesn’t mean your brain is working at its peak performance.

Pop and sugary drinks give you a quick burst of energy and seems to quench your thirst, but it is a quick pick me up that does not hydrate you and crashing is a consequence. If you are thirsty while you are playing you are thinking about that rather than the shot that you need to hit. Pop causes you to be dehydrated and in turn means that your body is not performing at its maximum capacity. Pop has a lot of sugar and caffeine so after a period of time you are going to crash and become tired. When that happens, usually you are reaching for another soda to get a caffeine or sugar rush again.

2.) No More Junk Food Junk food is unhealthy for a variety of reasons and we get told why and there are studies everywhere you look.

Although it may be the quick fix to a hungry stomach it can drastically hurt your golf game. With all the fat, bad carbohydrates, starch and sugar it will stay in your body for a longer period of time because it slows your metabolism. This excess weight on your body causes you to be tired and lethargic and doesn’t let your brain get the fuel it needs to work properly. Statistics show that your body can perform up to 35% less effectively when eating junk food before playing sports than someone who is eating nuts, bananas, trail-mix or healthy carbs. This stays true for the game of golf especially since you are walking between 5-10 miles—plus the mental focus it takes to hit golf shots.

These are just short-term side effects. If you are looking to play in high school, college, etc., eliminating soda pop and junk food is going to help you shoot the scores that you want to see and compete at a higher level.
