Welcome
From the Desk of NJGT Director Joe Canny, PGA July is here which means we are halfway through what has started as a great season with impressive golf. Participation each year increases significantly in July so make sure you are registering prior to the event deadline to ensure your spot in all NJGT Farmers Mutual Regular Season Events. With the final weeks of the NJGT season here it is time to start thinking about the NJGT Championship. Today is the day I post invitation numbers for the NJGT Championships. You can find those figures by clicking here. We determine the total number of invitations for each division based on the number of total NJGT members in each of those divisions. So if Girls 16+ makes up 20% of the tour membership they will receive 20% of the invitations going towards that division. This allows the same percentage of each division to get in to the championship. Another deadline I would like to remind you all of is the deadline for the Drive, Chip & Putt Local Qualifiers hosted in Grand Island and Omaha July 8th & 9th, respectively. These deadlines hit Sunday, July 3rd and are filling up so make sure to reserve your spot. The events are free and every young athlete walks away with cool tee gifts and prizes. Thank you so much for a great start to the year and I look forward to seeing you on the course this July! Sincerely, Joe Canny, PGA—Junior Golf Director – NJGT (402) 730-8364 | jcanny@njgt.org
Race to Quarry Oaks Golf Club
This year’s 18-hole division NJGT Championship will be hosted at Quarry Oaks Golf Club, ranked as Nebraska’s #1 Golf Course by Golf Digest. The course has received such accolades as Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, Nebraska Golfer Magazine’s Most Scenic Golf Course and Nebraska PGA Facility of the Year. Race to The Field Club of Omaha The 9-hole division championship will be hosted at The Field Club of Omaha once again for 2016. USGA Handicap System Q & A USGA Course Rating™, Slope Rating®, and Bogey Rating™ Q. What is a USGA Course Rating™, Slope Rating®, and Bogey Rating™? Slope Rating®, and Bogey Rating™?
Q. What is a USGA Course Rating™,
A. Course Rating defines the USGA® mark indicating the evaluation of the playing difficulty of a course for scratch golfers under normal course and weather conditions. It is expressed as strokes taken to one decimal place, and is based on yardage and other obstacles to the extent that they affect the scoring ability of a scratch golfer. Course Rating is equivalent to the better half average of a scratch golfer’s scores under normal playing conditions. Bogey Rating is the evaluation of the playing difficulty of a course for the bogey golfer under normal course and weather conditions. It is based on yardage, effective playing length and other obstacles to the extent that they affect the scoring ability of the bogey golfer. Bogey rating is equivalent to the better half average of a bogey golfer’s scores under normal playing conditions. Slope Rating defines the USGA mark indicating the measurement of the relative difficulty of a course for nonscratch golfers compared to the Course Rating. Slope Rating is computed by the following formula: Bogey rating minus Course Rating multiplied by (5.381 men, 4.24 women) equals Slope Rating. The USGA Handicap Department has a National Course Rating and Slope Database™ consisting of ratings for all courses in the United States. Please visit Section 13 of the USGA Handicap System manual for further reference.

Tour Tips With the season already half over we have been able to see a lot of golf. We have all been very impressed with not only the scores but the great golf swings we see on a weekly basis. We have also been seeing a few tendencies with youth on the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour and have some friends at GolfTEC who have great drills to help with a few of these swing issues. Youth on the NJGT are very flexible. Flexibility is great in the golf swing and a good thing to have in your youth. However, if not controlled during your rotary swing can lead to errant shots not solidly contacted. Our friend at GolfTEC in Wisconsin has some tips for you to control that lower body rotation:
Another great drill for this same swing flaw can be found here:
Bunker play is another area we’ve seen youth struggle. GolfTEC’s Patrick Nuber has great drills for helping you practice this area of your game:
Best of luck as you complete your summer season. We look forward to seeing how the rest of the season shapes out! If you need more assistance with your game make sure to visit our PGA Professionals and GolfTEC Certified Instructors. To Learn more about GolfTEC of Omaha please Click Here.

Facility Spotlight
Event – July 11, 2016 Built on a tree farm, Woodland Hills offers a unique look for a golf course in Nebraska. Rolling fairways, beautiful lakes and scenery on every hole make for a great day on course and a challenging tournament. Five sets of tees allow the NJGT tournament staff to position all divisions for a fair but still challenging event. Woodland Hills has hosted championships for the University of Nebraska Women’s Golf Team, Nebraska Golf Association and more. It has also won such awards as Golf Digests Best Places to Play and incredibly only one of 17 facilities in North America to receive Golf Digest’s five stars in 2006 & 2007. To learn more about Woodland Hills visit their website by clicking here. You can also take a virtual tour at http://www.woodlandhillsgolf.com/course_tour/, but you really need to see it for yourself!

Fitness Facts PGA Sports Academy Fitness Tips
Proper Preparation & Game Day Execution Stating the obvious here, but man has this summer been hot! The heat presents many challenges to golf that many of us are not used to dealing with. Having success on the course during the heat all comes down to what you do to prepare and what you do on the course. Prior to Event Don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink water. Drink plenty of water the days leading up to an event. Pack properly: -Bring a towel to wipe yourself down and provide shade when needed -Bring multiple water bottles and be ready to refill -Sunblock with high SPF and re-apply Day of Event Again – Drink and refill water often. Clothing: -Hat with a bill -SHORTS! – I’m jealous of you with this one -Wear breathable materials (many now have SPF and other tech which can help in heat) -Light colors -Sunglasses to protect your eyes
Aim for the middle of the fairway but walk in the shade to limit your amount of time in sun If you get light-headed don’t hesitate to take a short break and sit in the shade. Talk to your friendly tournament director as we are there to help.
With proper preparation and game day execution you will play better golf, feel better and stay safe.
