Education & Community Foundation Fund (PTECFF) The History of PTECFF In 2004, a small group of local leaders created a foundation that would rekindle and deepen the belief in the future of Pender and Thurston. They imagined the POWER OF PLACE with charitable giving to address current and future opportunities that make these two rural communities better places to live and work. The Pender-Thurston Education & Community Fund (PTECFF) was formed and became an affiliated fund of the Nebraska Community Foundation in 2005.

2004: A small group of local leaders envision a tool for the future of PenderThurston and PTECFF is formed

2009: PTECFF works through 5-year plan, establishing goals for the future of the community and holds first annual meeting

2005: PTECFF becomes affiliated with the Nebraska Community Foundation

2010: PTECFF holds first donors event

Why do we need an endowment?

Think of the endowment as THE FUTURE FUND. Gifts to the endowment not only last forever, they also increase in size. Each year, PTECFF grants a portion of the endowment earnings to community projects, allowing the endowment to continue to grow into the future while making a direct impact in our lives today. As a result, each contribution to the endowment “keeps on giving.�

The endowment is a powerful, permanent legacy that will have lasting impact in Pender and Thurston beyond our lifetimes. The endowment will remain intact forever, supporting the needs of our community as THE FUTURE FUND. Giving to the endowment now gives our community the ability to act when a worthy opportunity presents itself.

MAIN STREET THRIFTIQUE The Main Street Thriftique is a great example of how a simple donation of $3,500 for start-up costs for the 100% volunteer-run Main Street Thriftique has generated nearly $80,000 worth of money back into our community in its first two years of business.

As the Pender Community Center comes to fruition, we support this cause to create a community where people will want to live, work, visit, and raise their families. To date, two grants have been awarded from PTECFF in support of the Community Center: one for an architectural feasibility study and one for marketing support.

When this state-of- the-art facility is completed, it will serve the needs of all ages, now and into the future.

PTECFF looks for strategic grants to aid in the betterment of our community and to make our rural area survive and thrive. We continually seek ways to invest in our community now and into the future. Our goal is to continue to make this an area where families want to live and raise their families for years to come.

SCHOLARSHIPS PTECFF awards scholarships to Pender-Thurston area students who are pursuing higher education. This includes both traditional and nontraditional students. This enables donors to make tax-deductible contributions to our Fund. NCF provides financial management, strategic development, and education/training services to communities, organizations ,and donor-advised funds across the state. NCF is confirmed in compliance with National Standards for U.S. community foundations.

spotlight: Non-Traditional scholarship Larry Larson grew up in Pender, graduating in 1952 from Pender High School. His hometown remains special to him. In recognition of the place where he acquired his foundation for a successful career as a certified public accountant (CPA), Larry endowed the Larry Larson Educational Scholarship Fund for Non-Traditional Scholarships. Larry strongly believes that when local residents improve their employment opportunities, there is economic benefit for all. Payouts from this endowment benefit adults living and working in our community who desire to improve their skills and qualifications within their selected field. PTECFF awards several non-traditional scholarships every year.
