PSSA Trials - Majura success PSSA Trial - Girls - Four Majura players have made the final train-on squad for the PSSA Championships in Canberra in September. Over 50 girls turned up to the early trials, including ten from Majura, showing the rising interest among female players across Canberra. Erin Hyde, Iesha Flores, Grace Basser-Silk, and Grace Maher are all chosen. Good luck girls.

Capital Football Development Squad - Majura success

The first ACT U10 Skill development squad has been chosen and Kanga Cup 10 Majura had two boys selected in the 12 players chosen. Congratulations U11 Gladiators 11 to Will Roberts and Lachlan Pedley. This is part of a national program U12 Matildas 13 that feeds into the new Skillaroos program. U13 Thunder 16 Kanga Cup - Majura take two titles U13 Phoenix 17 U16 Olympic 18 Majura entered 11 teams in the Kanga Cup this year plus one from our Senior Club, Canberra Olympic U16 girls. Majura had our first U9 Open team take part in the U10 competition and U10, 11, 12 and 13 Open and Girls were all represented. Majura Quiz Interestingly, out of only seven winners from Canberra in the various (10 Questions) Grand Finals, only one club had more than one winner - Majura FC, both in U12s. Olympic Pathways Coaches have taken training sessions with Majura U13 and U15 Open Squads. Both sessions were well received.

For individuals: Majura Summer Football The inaugural program in term 4, 2010, was a great success with over 85 players aged 7-13 taking part. Majura is looking at running a similar program this year. Depending on the availability of Coaches and Grounds we may be able to expand the program to include more age groups and more players. More to come in the next newsletter.

Majura 13/1 girls at McDonalds the week before their great win over table toppers Gungahlin. Lunch was being shouted by the coach after a heavy defeat. As a team building exercise it worked! Nice one Filipe Flores!

Majura 2 Gungahlin 1 The 13/1 Girls have had a tough season after losing 6 of last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s players, and were in last place going into the match with top team Gungahlin. 5 weeks ago they lost this fixture 5-0, but in a stunning turnaround claimed the points with a gutsy 2-1 win. Lucy Spencer opened the scoring just before half-time by chipping the keeper from outside the area after Sophie Macken had charged down an attempted clearance. Straight from the 2nd half kick off Jodie Kirkness scooted down the right wing and smashed the ball into the top of the net. Gungahlin got one back, but Majura, with just 11 players and no subs fought a terrific battle to preserve their lead, with great work by Jodie and Sophie in goals, and Iesha Flores and Breeze Lignieres in defence. Congratulations to coach Fil Flores who has worked wonders with these girls.

15/2 Green Girls are truly remarkable. 15/2 Green Girls played a top of the table clash with Monaro with just 8 players in the first half, and 10 in the 2nd and still came away with a 1-1 draw, to go into the break 2 points ahead of Monaro. Half the team was missing because of the Lyneham High musical, and playing at Jerrabomberra made it hard to round up replacements.

2 girls from the 14/2 team raced right across Canberra from their match at Hawker to help out in the 2nd half, and help produce a Kanga Cup 10 fabulous result against the odds to keep the U11 Gladiators 11 unbeaten record intact. U12 Matildas 13 U13 Thunder 16 Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t miss the replay at Dickson after the holidays - should be a great U13 Phoenix 17 match. U16 Olympic 18 Stephen Spencer

Majura Gladiators U11 Kanga Cup: We won a new strip! The Majura Gladiators had a great start to the Kanga Cup. We won a strip in the Kanga Cup competition before we even kicked a ball! Well actually, Cheryl our manager won it and she decided to play in Yellow and Black and we looked very smart.

Majura Gladiators U11 Kanga Cup: (cont) Tuesday morning: The Fairfield Knights, from Sydney were up next. It was a beautiful morning but unfortunately they were big and physically challenging and we are just not used to playing teams like this. We fought our hardest and did not give up but the final result was 3-1 Fairfieldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s way. Final Pool Game Our final pool game was against the Northern Tigers on Wednesday morning and we drew 1 -1. This made us feel really good as the Northern Tigers had beaten the Fairfield Knights and Gungahlin. So we definitely played well and held our own. The Pool results: Northern Tigers finished first, Fairfield second and we were third. Unfortunately we just missed a semi-finals spot. Family supporters. Our final game was against the Camden Tigers. This was another beautiful morning down in Wanniassa. We played really well and won 5-1. This was a great way to finish. The Fairfield Knights were the Grand-Final winners of our competition We all really loved our Kanga Cup experience and we have learnt a lot especially about teams like the Fairfield Knights. We would all really like to thank Jason our coach who is fantastic as well as Sandie and Charlie who stood in when Jason and Cheryl could not make it. If you are going to be U10 or U11 next year you should ask your coach if you can do Kanga Cup it is a fantastic experience and so much fun. Thanks to Hugh (11) and Cheryl Warnock

“MINI MAJURA MATILDAS HAVING A BALL - Semi Final Report BY CAPITAL FOOTBALL STAFF CORRESPONDENT at Hawker Football Centre

Inspired by their Kanga Cup win last year the Majura Mini Matildas are back for more fun this year. The pink socked clad U12 girls’ team have reached the final for the second time after defeating a brave Scott Conlon coached Belsouth 8-1 in the semi-final at Hawker today with Eilis Fitt netting four times. Grace Maher has been a standout of the team scoring in every game. Her pace and skill has warmed the hearts of many a cold football supporter this week. She scored straight from a corner today, her second such feat of the week. “I’ve enjoyed the Kanga Cup. I like the way the team comes together as the week goes on. We’ve been playing well, having fun. The midfield has been linking well with the forwards and we’re playing good football,” said Grace. It wasn’t all football for Grace and the mini-Matildas. “We went to the Disco last night. That was fun as well!” added Grace. Coach Jo Smith said, “Tournaments like the Kanga Cup are fantastic. We get to play some different teams and players really work hard over the whole week. “We’re a mix of under-12 division 1 and division 2 players from the normal season and the girls have had a lot of fun. All the girls have done well, and we’ve had a lot of scorers. Eliza Baker, Anna Crompton, Grace Fieg, Tara Gilfillan, Grace Basser-Silk, Cameron Jackson, Eilis Fitt and Grace Maher have all scored. Rhian Baker, Maya Mokak, Eske Gavel, Alexandra Coram, Lucy Chilver, and Alex McKeough have all made outstanding contributions. We’re aiming to take the girls to the Borneo Cup in Malaysia next year and tournaments like this add another extra dimension to their football experience.”

DODGERS TOO STRONG FOR COURAGEOUS COOGEE BOY’S UNDER-12 PLATE Majura Dodgers 3 Coogee United 1 BY RUSS GIBBS at AIS Track Action on the 2011 Kanga Cup Grand Final day began with the bright winter sunshine warming the hearts and minds of a large group of spectators at the Australian Institute of Sport Athletics track, as Coogee United and Majura Dodgers went head-to-head in the under-12 Plate Grand Final. With the pitch in immaculate condition and a chill in the air the conditions were perfect for football and the two teams served up a feast for the supporters. The Dodgers were the more positive of the two teams in the first half and created the better of the openings but were unable to find a way past the formidable Coogee United defence. It took a moment of brilliance for Majura to take the lead and kick-start the final into life. Awarded a free-kick some 25 metres from goal, D’Ambrosio blazed a superb shot high up and over the wall that dipped over the head of the Coogee ‘keeper and crashed into the back of the net to put the Dodgers into the lead. It was a goal of sublime quality and was struck with an accuracy and velocity that belied his tender years. The score line remained 1-0 at the break and Coogee pushed looking for an equaliser for most of the second half. It was while Coogee was searching for the vital breakthrough that Majura struck what was to prove to be the killer blow. A swift counter-attack ended with an incisive pass splitting the United defence and allowing Cosentini to stride clear and slide a neat finish across the ‘keeper and into the far corner of the net. Coogee gave themselves renewed hope with a goal struck by Mould but any hopes of a comeback were quashed in their tracks by a third, and decisive, Dodgers strike. Chan raced away to slot calmly into the net and give the Dodgers the Plate trophy with a final score of 3-1.

Majura Thunder’s Under 13 team has narrowly missed out on playing finals in this year’s Kanga Cup competition after being defeated by Woden Valley United this morning at Hawker. In a close tough contest Majura went down 1 – 0 despite their strong defence. With only one other loss in the competition their three nil all draws have prevented them from advancing to the semi finals.

Fil Flores, the coach for Majura, said that the team had enough skill to play finals but results just didn’t go their way. He commended the team’s defensive efforts particularly noting the team’s three revolving goal keepers who really stood up for the team. The first half was a struggle with Majura’s impressive defence sure and courageous goal keeping ensuring Woden were scoreless.

It was more of the same in the second half with Woden making most of the play and Majura struggling to construct a formidable attack. A long high ball from a Woden striker just outside the penalty box miraculously soared over the outstretched arms of Majura’s goalkeeper to become the only score of the game. Majura worked tirelessly to try and peg back a score but Woden’s hunger for the ball was too strong.

Majura U13 Phoenix Kanga Cup - Douglas Warnock The under 13 Majura Phoenix decided this year to play in the Plate competition. We walked onto the first game full of confidence and butterflies. Boys are Six feet tall and very broad in the Northern Territory! The first game was on Monday against the Mindal Aces from the Northern Territory. They were huge; at least six feet tall and very broad. The final score was 4-0 their way. But the score did not tell how we fought the whole 60 minutes; we just couldn’t score. We won - now we’re firing. The second game was Monday afternoon against BelNorth and we won 1-0. This was great for our confidence. Tuesday morning was looking to be a beautiful day. The sun was out and we were ready to play. We won 3-0 against the Colo Cougars from the Hawkesbury area of Sydney. This was our best game yet. Last pool game: A must win. On Wednesday it was our last pool game and we had to win. It was against Western Creek Black Hawks. It was a great match with the Phoenix narrowly winning 4-3. We had made it into the semi –final pool. That afternoon we fronted up against our old rivals Bel South. As expected it was a tough game and the final result was a 0-0 draw. One more chance for a Grand Final spot. On Thursday we had one last run at the Grand-final and we were going to have to beat the Tilford Zebras from Hobart. We started the game really well and Peter and Sam our coach and manager were getting excited. Unfortunately they outplayed us and it turned into a horrible game that we lost 5-1. That was the end of our Kanga Cup. We want more! This was my fourth Kanga Cup and I really enjoy it. It is great playing every day and Paul (Cook) our coach is fantastic. And Peter (Docherty) our assistant coach is always ready to step in when needed. And mum organises everything so that we can play. I am looking forward to next year. It is a shame there isn’t any training this week. Thanks to Doug Warnock for the write-up.

NORTHERN TASMANIA WINS IN PENALTY SHOOT-OUT GIRL’S UNDER-16 CUP Northern Tasmania 2 Canberra Olympic 2 (Northern Tasmania win 5-4 on penalties) BY XUAN HUANG at Hawker Football Centre First-time contestant, Northern Tasmania, was the lucky one after a breathtaking final. Hannah Partridge and Taylah Lehman scored for Tasmania in each half. Anna Bennett was the hero for the home team who levelled the game twice. Neither side was able to find the net in extra time. Tasmania made all penalties from the spot while Olympic scored four from five. Tasmania gained a dream start. Partridge controlled a throw in ball and dribbled into the box. Her strike was blocked by the defender and passed over the keeper’s head luckily into the top right corner. The early goal ruined Olympics’ strategy and they didn’t make their first goal attempt until 15 minutes in. As both sides were trying to dominate the midfield, it was really hard to make any real threat. Bennett showed her talent the seventh minute of the second half with a sensational goal. She spirited from the left wing and took a low shot on the edge of the box. The ‘keeper got a touch on the ball but couldn’t stop it from entering the net. Lehman though then gave Tasmania the lead again. Partridge’s direct pass cut the defense and left Lehman a one on one chance. She confidently hit the ball into the net. The match was not over yet. A penalty was awarded to Olympic for handball just before the final whistle. Bennett didn’t pass up the golden chance to level the match at 2-2. Due to the fierce contest in regular time the players couldn’t offer more in extra time. Both team netted in the first two rounds of penalty shoot out. In the third round Elly Smith unluckily hit the bar. Emma Langley scored the winning penalty to claim the final for Northern Tasmania.
