Fine Silver Neal Auction Company is pleased to present this single-owner auction of fine silver from the Estate of Angela Gross Folk.

While largely American, the Folk Collection encompasses objects from various countries of origin and time periods. These objects illustrate the evolution of styles and forms, as well as the significance of silver and its role in material culture. The inclusion of eight tea services, not to mention the many related accoutrements, speaks to the importance of the service of tea in the social life of times past. As to the plethora of other forms, the inimitable Miss Manners said it best: “In the time of great financial boom—as Miss Manners likes to think of the Industrial Revolution—all kinds of strange implements were invented, and if you are rich and clever enough, you can set a table on which, as a lady of Miss Manners’ acquaintance says of her inherited silver, it is not clear whether dinner is to be served or a hysterectomy performed.” Ref.: Martin, Judith. Miss Manners’ Guide to Exceedingly Correct Behavior, p. 377.

LOT 7: Imperial Russian Silver Gilt and Enamel Desk Stand

Angela Gross at her summer home on Barnegat Bay, NJ, 1970’s.

ANGELA GROSS FOLK “My mother has had a long relationship with Neal Auction. In fact, Neal sold her Haitian paintings collection a few years back. She had many interests in collecting. Silver was one of these. Her interest in this area started around the time of the Bicenntennial. She began to attend local auctions in New Jersey, acquiring some Federal and Empire American silver. She soon became interested in collecting Russian Silver. During her summers, mom would take the family to our summer home on the Jersey shore (see photo). During the week, when her husband, Dr. Gross, was away at work, she would visit a particular antique shop in Lakewood, NJ. The shop was run by Kitty Daniels, an older woman who soon became a personal friend of mom’s. Mrs. Daniels was also friendly with the Russian community in nearby Jackson New Jersey, which was composed largely of Russian immigrants; Jewish, and Russian Orthodox. When the Russian immigrants needed additional funds, they sold some of their treasured silver heirlooms to Kitty, and Kitty, in turn, would offer them to mom. Mom also liked to visit high end antique shows. During the 1980’s, she attended the prestigious New York Armory show, where she saw a splendid tea set by Charters, Cann and Dunn of New York, which was being offered by the well-known and respected dealer, Peter Tillou. Each piece in the tea set was in the shape of an acorn, not just decorated with acorns. Although she was divorced from my father, Charles Folk, at this time, she persuaded him to purchase this set. After my father passed, the set went back to my mother. So, the set has been in my family for quite some time. There is actually silver from several countries in mom’s collection- she loved exceptional work in silver from wherever it came!” Her son, Tom Brady Folk
