Presidential Ramblings – Winter 2013 The New Year has begun, and with it, a new AIPG-NE executive committee has begun their term. I would like to thank the outgoing members for their outstanding and selfless service to the organization over the past term, and we all look forward to working together with them in the new term. Vacant – President Elect Mike Greenman – Past President Robert Blauvelt – Treasurer Tom West – Secretary Dennis McGrath – Member Jean Neubeck – Member Luke Mahier – Member Jeffrey Frederick - President As the new president of the Northeast Section, I would also like to take this opportunity to reflect on the AIPG Statement of Purpose and to open a discussion amongst our members regarding the “why” we are active members of this professional organization. Professional organizations have a long history, which are generally created to promote the profession and protect the interests of the practicing members of the professional community. AIPG specifically enumerates the following as the first, and therefore most important, purpose: “… to strengthen the geological sciences as a profession with all reasonable actions”; with the remaining statement of purpose detailing professional qualifications and ethical standards, protection of the public, and communication with government organizations and the public with regard to the geological sciences.

As a community of scientists, what actions can we take to strengthen the profession? The quiet, competent, and ethical execution of our daily tasks may conform to the above stated goal, but it (Ramblings continued on page 15)

does little to outwardly strengthen the profession. While it lies at the integral core of what is required to keep the profession strong (good work, happy clients, and an outstanding reputation), I am asking what we can do, in addition to this, to further strengthen our profession.

When I think of strong professions, and strong professional organizations, I quickly think of the various state and national Bar Associations, and the American Medical Association.

These organizations serve as focal points for their respective communities. They publish journals, advocate policy, and educate their members and the public with regard to their profession and the issues of the day. These professions are also much more strictly regulated under state and federal law, which may or may not be related to the relative strength of their respective professions. But the role of professional organizations in these two fields should serve as a template for what is possible, what has been done in the past, to strengthen the respective profession with all reasonable actions.

One reasonable action one might take to strengthen the profession is to join the AIPG. I am preaching to the choir, but, well done! You compiled your vitae and transcripts, and you have surpassed the standards for professional qualification set forth in the by-laws. I would suggest, however, that you are not done. You’ve only taken an important first step on a long journey.

A professional organization like the AIPG is only as strong as its active members, and active members are energized to participate because they believe in the purpose and activities of the organization. I believe that the purpose of our organization is clear and comprehensive, and all of us are naturally aligned with our stated purpose. The added drive to participate must then come from the specific activities the organization undertakes to achieve the stated goals.

What does AIPG-NE do to strengthen the profession?

AIPG-NE currently meets 7 times a year to discuss the business of the Section and to plan future events. We currently conduct two large meetings (spring and fall), which usually include a geologic field trip or lecture, an executive committee meeting, followed by a group dinner. AIPG-NE has initiated a professional education series, offering valuable CEUs to attendees with state licensure requirements while advancing professional understanding of specific sub-disciplines within the field. AIPG-NE has been a strong advocate of NY State licensing of geologists, although the legislative process tries even the most patient among us. AIPG-NE publishes a quarterly newsletter full of national and section information, (Ramblings continued on page 19)

advertisements from our cherished vendors, and an annual member’s directory to help us all keep track of our colleagues around the region. Established by AIPG-NE in 1987, the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geologic Scholarship (Perpetual Trust Fund) awards scholarships to deserving undergraduates who have chosen to study the geosciences. This is not a comprehensive list, but these are the primary activities that we undertake to strengthen the profession. As a past recipient of the “Angelo” scholarship award, I am especially proud of the work done by AIPG-NE to perpetuate the Trust Fund.

It takes a lot of hard work, and I believe it is perfectly aligned with our core values!

What else could AIPG-NE do to strengthen the profession?

Let me say first, I am always open to a good idea. If you think you really know what we could be doing as an organization to strengthen the profession, and you are energized and willing to participate, please let me know. That said, there are a number of good ideas currently in the incubator. Many of the stated purposes of the organization include public education and dissemination of information to governments, schools, and civic organizations. It is important to state that the dissemination of information is not to be confused with advocacy. For example, there are several geosciences related topics in the news today that generate a great deal of confusion within the community of non-scientists. Fracking.

Climate Change. Coastal Processes (Hurricane Sandy comes to mind). Sadly, these topics are met with confusion within the scientific community, and let’s face it: each of these has been obscured with enough partisanship to make most people unwilling to resolve the issues in their own mind. They’ve become classmates with religion, money, politics, and the other things you don’t discuss at the dinner table.

a specific viewpoint. A healthy, congenial, organized debate (followed by dinner) would be an interesting evening for members and interested non-members? Or a “position” piece that presents both positions to foster discussion and analysis?

Why couldn’t AIPG-NE undertake a Public Service Initiative?

Offering geoscience “guest” lectures to public schools? Or adopt a highway/roadway in a watershed?

Why couldn’t AIPG-NE develop a Sustainability Best Management Practice (BMP) for use by member’s firms and vendors?

Sustainability is what it’s all about, after all.

Why couldn’t AIPG issue press releases promoting the geosciences as a career, noting starting salaries, number of opportunities, etc? Or a press release based on an internal survey (Ramblings continued on page 22)

I think we could do any or all of these things. These are only a few ideas, but each would need a human sponsor to make it a reality. Ask yourself: Did I join AIPG just to put CPG after my name? Probably not. Was it to join a professional organization, to become a member of a community, focused on promoting and strengthening the profession with all reasonable action? AIPG-NE awaits the answer.

Scheuing - If it is in the approved budget, then Bob Blauvelt would not have to continue to make semi-annual/annual request. General guidelines is 5 to 10% for administrative expenses; so, if $10K – then $500 to $1,000.

Correspondence: None Old Business  Fall meeting: Laurie Scheuing – working with Bill Kelly on 10/24/12 field trip at LaFarge, as joint meeting with NYSCPG. Still working out logistics with the Council to have a business meeting (couple of hours) – otherwise, we will have a conflict with our Ex Com; may need to have a separate call in to accommodate the Ex Com meeting. The tour will accommodate 25 to 30 people – tentatively scheduled for 12 to 3 or 1 to 4pm; will need to coordinate a separate dinner arrangements because it can’t coordinate with HMPGA. Laurie Scheuing intends to provide all of the details in an e-announcement to be circulated shortly.  Short course: Bob Blauvelt – surface geophysics with Lee Slater; course is approved by NJDEP – but accommodations at Rutgers are not available until next spring; big issue is parking. Need to work out a date for the course – either over winter break or possibly spring break. New news – Laurie reached out to Bob Blauvelt with contacts at the USGS (Pierre LeCompte) for a subsurface geophysics course (Trenton Naval Warfare Center) – joint course between USGS/Rutgers and NE-AIPG. Consider doing one course with proceeds going to Angelo Fund and the other goes to the NYSCPG geologist registration funding. Bob Blauvelt put it out on table for discussion.

National Meeting: Mike Greenman will be attending the National Meeting to be held 22-26 September 2012 in Rapid City, South Dakota. He has already confirmed travel, lodging and meeting attendance.

New Business  Section Elections: We were to have ballot completed before the National meeting – three officers and 3 members at large positions are up for election. Dennis McGrath has been working on this, but not complete. Most important would be to identify who will be nominated as President-Elect to follow on after Jeff Frederick. Bob Blauvelt, Craig Werle and Dennis McGrath all expressed a willingness to step down if we are able to identify potential new Ex Com candidates. Several names of potential candidates were discussed, but a final decision on the ballot was not reached.  Replacement of Editor: Bill Prehoda has given us 6 months notice, and he has served 7 years. He pledged to try to locate an appropriate replacement; but could not commit to serve until a replacement editor has been secured. Dick Young indicated that this is critical, since we cannot seek advertising without a guarantee to publish the requisite number of Newsletters. This will require a real effort to help Bill Prehoda find a qualified replacement. This issue has not been resolved.  Web site problem: The credit card used to secure payments to maintain the website had expired and as a result, the website was taken offline. Once the problem was identified, Bob Blauvelt provided the new credit card information to re-activate the website; however, as of this meeting the web site remains offline. Mike will plan on speaking to Bob Blauvelt regarding this issue.

Scholarship: Dennis McGrath has started the mailing process; announcements and mailings will be going back out to all faculty contacts by Oct 6th. Usually, Dennis sends a reminder in early November of the upcoming deadline for scholarship applications.

Alpine Sports and Geologic Processes Jeffrey Frederick Alpine sports do not necessarily require a very deep understanding of geology or geologic processes. Mountains, Rock, and Ice can simply be climbed “because it is there�, in the famous words of Sir Edmund Hilary. lies beneath your feet, how did it come to be, or what will it look like in 10,000 years. In my younger years, I became obsessed with rock climbing while studying for my undergraduate degree in central New York, and it was a passion of mine for many years. I found a tremendous outlet for rock climbing, and various other alpine sports, while I lived and worked as a geologist in Oregon.

During my time there, I studied and certified as a technical mountain rescue operator on the evenings and weekends.

I ultimately participated in many rescues, and even more “recoveries�, in the Cascade Range and beyond. We trained Source: Wikipedia on towering desert basalt columns, welded tuff cliffs in central Oregon, and the basaltic andesites and diorites typical of the high Cascade Range.

The Cascade Range is the product of rather typical active subduction, with an orogenic uplift belt punctuated by stratovolcanoes, calderas, and intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks of primarily intermediate composition (poor in quartz and potassium feldspar). Mt. St. Helen’s epic eruption on May 18, 1980 captivated the nation, showing the destructive and unpredictable nature of the region. But the geologic record of the region shows us that what we have seen in recent history is nothing compared to what this pressure cooker is capable of. For example, the Columbia Plateau located in northern Oregon, southern Washington, and western Idaho covers approximately 190,000 mi2 with basalt. For a little perspective, that’s more area than all of California (158,000 mi2), and a bit less than Texas (266,000 mi2). Did I mention nearly 40,000 mi3 of basalt, most of which was extruded during a 1.5 my window between 17 and 15.5 mya? That’s enough basalt to cover all of New York, one mile deep!

Or slightly east of the High Cascades lies Newberry Crater, a massive shield volcano approximately 20 mi in diameter that has erupted felsic, intermediate, and mafic throughout its history. Its central crater collapsed approximately 500,000 years ago, yielding the beautiful Newberry Caldera with deep alpine lakes and obsidian domes. While dormant, this monster draws tourists, hikers, and bikers while remaining a potentially active volcano.

While these high mountains are strikingly beautiful, they are also known to the climbing community for their poor rock quality. Loose, fractured, and heavily weathered andesitic rock often provides extreme objective danger, which is another term for “rockfall�. Climbers like to divide the dangers of their chosen obsession into neat buckets: subjective dangers include all of the things I can control; objective dangers are equivalent to the finger of God. glaciers. Warm weather preceding a climb can mean additional rockfall, as the unrelenting freeze-thaw cycle unleashes a fresh round of bombs and missiles. So, the popular vision of climbers working out in the gym, running hills, and sharpening ice axes is more realistically expressed as a religious addiction to weather websites, radar images, snowpack reports, and temperature plots.

It was a rare weekend when all of the influences appeared to come together to provide three team-mates and me with the opportunity for an attempt at Mt. Washington of the High Cascades. We determined that we had a 24 hour window to attempt the 3,000’ generic approach hike through typically soggy, mosquito infested lake country in order to attempt the 500’ technical ascent of the volcanic plug that comprised the summit structure. followed by a rather precarious rappel-decent back to the shoulder of the mountain. We would walk out to the car in the late afternoon, in the failing light of an early summer’s evening. The plan was to take 12 hours roundtrip, from the car.

A typical oh-dark-thirty start: strong coffee and little else to eat as we drive up into the mountains on a cold early summer morning. We parked in a wilderness area at 5,000 above sea level. The mosquitoes are living up to their end of the bargain, so we bathe in the strongest repellant money can buy. Anyone with enough blood left to stay conscious at the end of the approach hike gets to climb! As we hiked, we talked of the route ahead, and all of the special precautions we knew we must consider for this route, on this mountain.

The rock quality is not highly regarded, meaning the protection we would place along the route (camming devices and soft metal chocks designed to arrest a fall) would have to be carefully considered. We had all heard more than one story about perfectly placed protection pulling 500lb chunks of weathered andesite free, with tragic results.

We weaved along the gendarmes of rotten rock along the arching ridge that lead to the summit pinnacle. As we crested the last rise, we all noted the brightly colored backpacks lying at the base of the route. Nuts! Other climbers got there before us, and were already on the route‌ meaning we would now have to worry about the objective dangers posed by an unknown party dislodging rocks above us. This can be a show-stopper, and we all knew that our climb was in doubt.

After another minute of hiking, one of my partners stopped dead in his tracks, stiff and staring.

We all stared for a hot second. He was right: two bodies lay beneath the route, a coiled mass of ropes around them that stood out in bright relief against the snow. We all knew instantly that our climb was over as we rushed closer to see exactly what had happened. At 25 yards out, one of the bodies moved… and then yelled to us.

we had intended to climb, on Wednesday morning. Into the second pitch (rope length), the lead climbed while the belay remained at the anchor that had built. The lead fell, all of the protection he had placed, failed. He whizzed past the belay, shock loading the anchor.

The belay failed, and they plummeted the remaining 150’ together, landing in a broken heap of twisted rope and agony.

It was now approximately 11:00am, on Saturday. Seventytwo hours had passed, and there they were, exposed, lying on the snow, no water, broken bodies. But they somehow managed to stay alive, and the four of us knew precisely what to do. A cell phone with barely a signal, we called Mountain Rescue HQ, at the Sheriff’s Dept., and were (Article continued on page 46)

patched through to the Oregon Air National Guard. We needed air support or they were going to die. A patient attendant was assigned to talk to them, constantly talking, assessing their injuries, and providing what little care we could. They were scared, and they knew they were not yet “out of the woods”. Broken tibias, fibias, femurs, pelvises, a humerus, internal and external bleeding. Compound fractures, no less.

A ledge needed to be excavated in the steep snow terrain to provide a stable platform to work on, and a “bomb-proof” anchor needed to be prepared to lower the litter and attendant once we began the evacuation.

The less injured climber confided in us that after the fall, he decided that he would just have to “suck it up” and walk out.

His tib/fib (lower left) fracture had actually broken through the skin (compound) and had been driven into the gravel upon impact, plus he had lost a lot of blood. He took one step, and promptly passed out. That was when they realized neither of them was going anywhere. He made an insulated ground pad with the rope, he braced his partner’s broken femur by tying his good leg to it, and they settled in for the long wait. If no one had come to climb this weekend, this last day before the Sunday rain, they would have died there.

The four of us might have been the luckiest random encounter of their lives. Two hours after we had spotted them, the Air National Guard Pavehawk arrived on scene. We were right beneath the towering peak above, so they hovered at eye level approximately 100 yards away and dropped 2 Pararescue Jumpers (PJs), which are the Air Force equivalent of Special Forces field medical technicians. While I was staring at the pilot, awed by his steady control of the now impossibly close airship, my climbing partner (retired USMC) leaned in and yelled, “one gust of wind, and we’re all finished!” The PJs now standing on the mountain below us, began their climb up to our position. Thankfully, they took over the direct patient care, which quickly included morphine drips for (Article continued on page 49) -46-

each of the broken men. “More”, they cried. “Any more, and your heart will stop”, replied the medics.

We were now free to focus on the logistics involved in moving the patients. The anchor to lower the litter, with attendant, ended up being one of the more challenging aspects of the rescue. The rock quality was terrible, with only a few small fractures capable of providing a solid placement. So, we improvised. We excavated deep, narrow slits in the lip of the “bergshrund”, which is the crevasse that forms between a snow field or glacier and the rock headwall. The snowpack was extremely consolidated into what is called “firn ice”, an intermediate substance somewhere between snow and glacial ice. Once the slots were cut, we anchored to our hiking poles, which were situated perpendicular to the slot in the ice. The rock had failed once, and we were not about to give it a second chance.

Once we had established the anchors, we had to do the unthinkable. We had to move each of these men into a litter, to be lowered away from the cliff and hoisted into the hovering Pavehawk. We started with the patient in the worst shape (broken femur, pelvis, humerus, and internal bleeding). Despite the morphine, he was in excruciating pain. To this day I can’t believe he didn’t just pass out, if not from the

lack of oxygen caused by the guttural screams as we very gently loaded him into the litter, then from the pain of a shattered pelvis and femur that no longer provided a structure for us to lift. We lowered him (and his attendant PJ) without incident, they were hoisted away, and we later learned that he was in surgery before the Pavehawk returned for the second climber. lowing our first phone call. They stayed behind and finished cleaning up the site, while we began our long walk out. We walked out in silence, in the failing light, each of us lost in our thoughts and replaying in our minds the event we had just witnessed, participated in. Thinking hard about the two lives we just saved. “They were so lucky”, I kept thinking.

But, maybe, we were lucky too. Rock quality can change year to year, and who knows what we would have encountered had we climbed that route. The High Cascades are beautiful, they are a pleasure to explore, and the geology is complex and always interesting. NEWS FROM THE NORTHEAST REBUILDING AFTER STORMS

BY Mike Greenman, CPG—10442 Aquifer Drilling & Testing The Northeast has been hit particularly hard by hurricanes the past two years. In 2011, Hurricane Irene did considerable damage to infrastructure in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. This was followed this past October by Hurricane Sandy, which dealt a considerably bigger blow. Damage to shorefront infrastructure, as well as damage to inland buildings and utilities has cost homeowners and municipalities billions of dollars.

Aquifer Drilling & Testing has been working for the past year for New York State DOT on projects to replace bridges and roads that were damaged by rising streams caused by Hurricane Irene. Numerous bridges, which were already in poor condition, suffered further damage, as well as roads along rivers and creeks, which saw their banks being eaten away by the swelling waters. As part of these projects, bridges will be replaced and strengthened, culverts will be enlarged, and roadways which parallel the rivers will receive upgraded embankments.

The drilling is being done under a “when and where contract” in Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Columbia, Rockland, Orange and Ulster Counties. Borings range in depth from 25 feet to 175 feet. Projects cover a wide range of geology, from the metamorphic rocks of Westchester to the sedimentary rocks of Ulster county and igneous of Rockland County.

In this case a level work area had to be created in front of the rig. Location of the boring was further complicated by the presence of underground utilities. Bridge projects have required every type of rig from truck to track to large tired buggy rigs. Also, core machines have been used to test concrete in the walls and roadways. Areas surrounding the rivers are often dense with foliage and are usually boggy.

As these projects have been in progress, Hurricane Sandy hit the tristate area with devastating effects. We have all seen pictures of the effects of the storm. Pictures can never quite tell the whole story. About two hours into the storm a tree came down in front of our house on Long Island. We had no power for 12 days. Luckily the house was in one piece.

The damage done to our local beaches was horrific. The possibility of the beaches being closed this coming summer loomed large.

their bathroom facilities needed to be replaced in Rockaway, Coney Island and South Beach Staten Island. New toilet facilities would have to be built before the summer bathing season. As part of his plan new facilities would be designed and built. As part of the design, test borings were needed at the location of each facility. New York City’s Department of Design and Construction was assigned the task. At their request, Aquifer Drilling supplied 6 all terrain rigs to perform 3 test borings at each new facility. Borings were 50 and 100 feet in depth with normal Standard Penetration Tests (STP), as well as Undisturbed sampling. Work was performed under

the City’s consultant, URS. Work continued 7 days a week for approximately 2 weeks.

Other projects continue to come in. Underground electrical equipment will now be put above ground. New foundations require subsurface testing. In addition, the environmental damage done by the storm was immense. In-ground oil tanks and chemicals swept from people’s homes, as well as sewage systems that have emptied into the streets, will require analysis and remediation.

Discussions are ongoing as to whether there should be rebuilding in waterfront areas. Flood insurance will be up to 800% more for those who do not raise there homes. Suggestions have been made that the States buy up properties in these flood-prone areas. New Jersey had a successful program to buy up properties along river flood plains, where flooding was almost yearly. Unfortunately, these are not just properties, but whole communities, where people have lived together, often for generations. (-end)

Many of us are familiar with hiking up Bear Mountain in Harriman State Park. The average person goes straight up the Appalachian Trail to the top. A gentler climb follows the SBM (Suffern-Bear Mountain) yellow-marked, trail from the parking lot near the lake. Take this trail which follows the Appalachian Train for a ways, until it enters the 1777 trail. Follow the 1777 trail to the right, until it comes to the white-marked, Appalachian Trail, and follow this to the top. After enjoying the view and the local geology, follow the white marked, Appalachian Trail down the steeper front side of the mountain.

A sample map can be seen on the previous page. A two-map set (recommended when hiking in the park) is issued by the NY/NJ Trail Conference and can be purchased at the visitor center on the Palisades Interstate Parkway, as well as on line.

PHARMACEUTICALS IN OUR WATERS An emerging environmental issue is the prevalence of pharmaceutical drug contamination in our rivers, bays, and estuaries. The problem is not common to just one city, state or area of the country. The common practice is just flush unwanted prescription medications down the toilet. However our sewage treatment and septic facilities and drinking water treatment were not designed to remove these offenders. A study done in 2000 by the USGS, found low-levels of antibiotics, hormones, contraceptives, and steroids in 80% of the streams and rivers tested. There are no governmental policies that prevent improper disposal of prescription drugs. Effects of low level exposure to ecosystems and humans are uncertain. Among the studies are incidences of feminization of winter flounder in Jamaica Bay, NY with a 10:1 ratio of female to male flounders. Studies have also shown that male fish have begun to produce eggs when exposed to the estrogen of birth control pills. Other drugs, such as beta blockers, reduce fertility in certain aquatic organisms. In Suffolk County, NY, 70 groundwater samples were taken from the Upper Glacial and Magothy aquifers. Pharmaceuticals were found in 28 of the 70 samples, some with multiple compounds. Especially prevalent were antiepileptic drugs and antibiotics. The compounds were traced back to treated and untreated sewage discharges.

Nationally, studies have detected pharmaceuticals in the drinking water of 41 million Americans. The contaminants not only are flushed in their entirety but are found in processed human waste. In addition, pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities are dumping huge quantities into the environment. There is no confirmed data, as yet, that have shown long-term effects on human health. State and federal regulations do not specify acceptable levels in drinking water.

Many water companies do not currently test water for pharmaceuticals. More to follow on the subject.

On a personal note, there seems to be much confusion on how to properly dispose of prescription drugs. Recently, my wife and I were cleaning out my father-in-law’s condo in Florida. He had a large amount of unused prescription medications. Since medications are often received in quantities of three months at a time, the amounts were quite large. We went into the local pharmacy and inquired if they had provisions to dispose of the medications. We were told that the local firehouse was a collection point. At the firehouse, we were shown a flyer saying that prescription meds were collected by the County Sheriff’s Department. When we went to the County Sheriff it was a Saturday and the office was closed. A deputy in the parking lot had no knowledge of a recycling effort, but suggested that the local hospital took the medications. The hospital did not, in fact, have a plan in place. With one last try we went back to the Sheriff’s office when they were open, and lo and behold, there was a recycling box in the lobby of the office. Obviously, the Deputy we ran into never went in the front door of his office. Along the way, people suggested mixing the drugs with coffee grinds to make them unusable or were told to just flush them away.

Even if they were rendered useless and put in the trash, they may still have entered the groundwater through an unlined landfill. In a state with a lot of elderly, the quantities would be staggering.

IN THE NEWS Fracking

January marked the end of New York’s most recent public comment period on fracking. The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) received thousands of comments calling for the proposed regulations to be withdrawn, saying they are flawed and premature. Comments also called for a public health review to be completed in a transparent manner that includes a public comment period. An indication of whether or not Governor Cuomo will allow fracking in New York State may come as early as February.

Desalinization At a meeting held in Rockland County on January 29, 30 groups gathered to discuss the problems associated with desalinization of Hudson River water. Groups called for water conservation as an alternative to costly, energy-intensive desalinization plants. One such plant is proposed in Haverstraw on the west side of the river. Engineering design has been in progress for several years.

Meteor A 150 foot long meteor is currently heading in the earth's direction and is due to pass within the moon’s orbit around the earth. Reports are that the earth is in no direct danger of a hit, but that satellites that are in geosynchronous orbit may be at risk. Another pass is due in 2040, but scientists say that it will also miss the earth. If this meteor hits, will all the dinosaurs perish again? Maybe, all of us old “dinosaurs” should start to put things in order.

Rare Earths Because of a global recession, the rare earth elements that are so valuable in electronics, mobile phones, magnets, batteries, weaponry, etc. have fallen drastically in price. Although not as rare as the name suggests, they are highly costly to retrieve from their host rocks. The retrieval process is also environmentally highly hazardous. Over the last decades, China had gained a near monopoly of these important resources. Companies have been springing up around the world to tap other sources of these rare earths. However, with the lower demand and increased supplies, many of these companies have been closing down or not even begun to develop some of their holdings. China with its lower labor costs was able to gain a monopoly and control the world’s supply, even going so far as denying Japan a supply which they needed for their manufacturing of electronics and cars. At one point, China cut its export quota by 40%, throwing the markets into a frenzy. Prices for rare earths soared and new companies began to spring up. Financing of any company with rare earth in its name became easy. With new sources in other countries, the rare earth bubble has burst.
