Presidential Ramblings

Iceland II:

In my last ramblings I talked mainly about the igneous activity of Iceland. For this Rambling I would like to mention the other half of the island of Fire and Ice, the glaciers and waterfalls. Once again, please excuse the non-Icelandic spelling of places. Iceland is partially covered by large glaciers, the largest of which is Vatnajokull (kull = glacier) which nearly reaches to the sea on the southeast. tain (2,119 m, 6,950 feet) is below this glacier and is a stone’s throw from the sea. An inlet of the ocean on the south side of the glacier is filled with icebergs which have calved off the glacier and into the warmer ocean waters. The bay is most viewable by a land/water craft which drives from land into the water and then sails among the various-sized icebergs.

The icebergs have a blue color as is common in glacial lakes and ice.

Many also have layers of black sediments that have been picked up by the glacier on its travels to the sea.

Unfortunately, as is the case worldwide, these glaciers are retreating rapidly in the face of global warming. A piece of ice was harvested from the bay and was distributed so that we can taste a piece of ice that was estimated to be 1,000 years old. Another way of enjoying this glacier was via snowmobile. The snowmobile base was reached by a winding single lane dirt road up the mountain. The ride took 45 minutes and one often looked down shear cliffs at the edge of the road. After being outfitted with our snowmobiling gear and safety equipment ,we received a 10-minute course on the operation of the vehicle, and off we went. Most of us being new to this conveyance, we were led along groomed trails further up the glacier. These trails are changed daily due to the large number of fissures that open regularly. At a rest stop, we stood in the middle of the glacier and looked around—all was white with a blue sky. Up and down had no (Ramblings continued on page 15) -12-

meaning and other than our tracks, we would not know which way was down the mountain. When the leader determined we could be trusted on our vehicles, we went off-trail up and over some of the icy ridges. The feeling, and views, were incredible. We had been at the top of some Alaskan glaciers, but this was a whole new experience. As I mentioned in the last Ramblings, this was August and temperatures were quite mild. Even at the top of the mountain, temperatures were above freezing.

The glaciers have left their impact on the topography of Iceland. Glaciers and glacial streams have cut deep channels around the coast line especially on the east, north and west.

Long, deep, steep-sided fjords cut their way into the cliffs, which plunge straight into the ocean. Many of these fjords provide safe harbors for the fishing fleets. Along some of these cliffs are nesting colonies of puffins and other sea birds. You can approach quite close to these birds which affords very good picture taking.

The melting waters of the glaciers also cause the other major feature of Iceland - waterfalls. Volcanic eruptions have left resistant cliffs throughout the island and melt waters running off the glaciers have not had time to cut channels through the resistant basalts. Rivers are steep and fast flowing and the waterfalls vary in type and have distinct features. The most common waterfall which can be seen through much of the island is water running over the edge of a vertical cliff (Ramblings continued on page 16) -15-

several hundred feet high and then Skogafoss down a gentle slope to the valley below.

Some of these such as at S k o g a f o s s (f os s = w a te rf al l ) have trails that lead you up and behind the falls for a view looking through the falling waters to the valley below.

At Selfoss the broad Hvita River pours into Selfoss a sharp crevice in the rock. One can follow paths down to the level of the falls and stand on rocks in the middle of the raging river.

Little in the way of protective barriers prevents one from slipping into the waters (More about the Hvita River later in this article). We stopped at several of this type of waterfall, each one more picturesque than the last. One waterfall of significance was Godafoss (God’s waterfall). Legend has it that in the year 1,000 Porgeir, a local chieftain and law speaker was entrusted by his district to decide whether to adopt the Christian faith. He collected all the Pagan statues and threw them into the river by the falls and from this point on, Iceland became a Christian country.

One of the more unusual waterfalls was the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, which together is a kilometer wide waterfall system. Here the water does not pour over the top of the cliffs, but instead pours out of seams in the cliff face into a chasm that runs parallel to the cliffs. Runoff is filled with the fine rock flour that gives the rivers their aqua blue color. The river that these falls enter is the Hvita. The Barnafoss is a small falls upstream of the falls on the cliff face. The river comes down a narrow chute, flowing rapidly, waters churning and through an area which once had a natural bridge. Legends abound about the destruction of the natural bridge, some attributing it to a woman who lost two children in the raging waters when they fell from the bridge. natural feature in Iceland has a folk tale associated with it. Many of these tales go back to Pagan times and were used to explain natural disasters.

Hraunfossar

Because of the many wild rivers in Iceland, one of the major forms of recreation is white water rafting. One of these rivers is the Hvita (Ramblings continued on page 22)

and flows not too far from the capital of Rejkjavik (Vik = harbor). It is an easy bus ride from the city to the launch site for river rafting and the trip we decided to take was a class three rapids. At certain times of year, rivers can go to class four or five. After being outfitted with wet suits and safety gear and paddles, we were given brief instructions on how to paddle and what to do in the unlikely event of falling out of the raft. We boarded 6 people to each raft along with a young Finnish girl as our guide. The river was wild and the water was cold (39oF), as it was coming off the glacier. The river was surrounded by steep basalt cliffs which channeled the river into fast moving current with rapids and large rocks.

The ride took about 2½ hours in all. When the river calmed, we were able to race other rafts and play some interesting games while quickly spinning the rafts. Remember the safety instructions about the unlikely event of falling overboard—my wife fell overboard and had to be pulled in by a second raft.

They pulled her in as she fell laughing to the bottom of the raft. She spent the last part of the trip dripping 39 degree water.

As I write this, I realize that I sound like a travel magazine.

However, if you like a different sort of vacation that combines geology with outdoor fun, Iceland is close and should not be missed.

Secretary’s Report: The draft July Meeting Minutes were circulated electronically prior to the meeting and comments received from several Section members. The July meeting minutes were finalized and distributed on October 10, 2011 to the Executive Committee and subsequently published in the Holiday Newsletter.

Treasurer’s Report: The Executive Committee reviewed and discussed the July and August Treasurer’s reports. There were only minimal expenses during the period and the change in account status in the scholarship fund is largely due to the performance of the investment markets.

Old Business:

• Fall Meeting: The Fall Meeting announcement was circulated internally and was subsequently included in the Indian Summer Newsletter. Dennis McGrath was to finalize the driving directions to the meeting location (Dinosaur State Park, Rocky Hill, CT) prior to final distribution of the meeting (9-8-11 Meeting Minutes continued on page 26) -25-

announcement. The Section had voted and agreed to cover the $6 per person admission fee for the park. In addition to the meeting and dinner, Laurie Scheuing had reached out to Bill Siok, AIPG National Director, who is planning on being in the Boston area for another meeting (October 19th) to see if he was able to participate in the Section meeting; Mike Greenman indicated that he would also follow-up with Bill during the National meeting.

• Annual Meeting: National has indicated that there was lower voter turnout for the Section Elections (turnout was reportedly 50% of normal), and that one of the causes for the lower turnout was un-opposed candidates. Mike Greenman reported that he was under budget for his trip to the Annual Meeting; and the meeting agenda was briefly discussed.

• Section Elections: The results of the Section Election were distributed by Dennis McGrath: Laurie Scheuing – Member at Large Bill Prehoda - Member at Large George Tyers – Member at Large 6.

New Business

• Newsletter: Bill Prehoda initiated a discussion on feedback regarding the change in the Newsletter from a paper to electronic feedback. Bill noted that according to the website database which records “hits” or links to the PDF copy of the Newsletter, that there has been less than 100 “hits” to each copy of the newsletter, compared to the 600+ members on the current distribution list. Bill also noted that he has sent out several hundred email announcements, including requests for “Members in the News” and seldom receives a response. However, at least one vendor has expressed concern regarding the relatively low “hits” to the electronic Newsletter website; the vendor expressed his concerns in an email to Dick Young the Newsletter publisher.

• NYSCPG: Laurie Scheuing, who is the Council’s Past President, provided a brief update on the renewed professional geologist licensure efforts in New York and noted that the NE Section has made historical contributions to the licensure effort over the past decade. Mike Greenman suggested that Section further discuss and vote on a motion for additional sponsorship during the Fall Meeting.

• Angelo Tagliacozzo Scholarship Update: Dennis has sent out announcements to historical applicant sponsors, broken down into groups based on the year of each sponsorship. In addition, Dennis is working on a PDF announcement for schools that had previously received a scholarship award and has uploaded the new 2012 scholarship and application form on the Section’s website.

• Advisory Board: Bob Blauvelt is currently serving on the National Advisory Board, and Mike Greenman has requested comments and/or corrections to the Report to the Advisory Board prior to the Annual Meeting.

• Spring Meeting Pre-Discussions: Several potential Spring Meeting venues were discussed including the status of Bear Mountain State Park (not recommended) and a possible return trip to Central Park. Mike Greenman indicated that he would begin researching possible options if the meeting was to be held in Central Park, including dinner locations and possible speakers.

The change in account status in the scholarship fund is largely due to the performance of the investment markets.

Correspondence: The Section received acknowledgement and a thank you note from the NYSCPG for the continued to support of the state licensing effort. In addition, a thank you note was received from another of the 20102011 Angelo Tagliacozzo scholarship recipients; we have received thank you notes from five of the six scholarship winners during the 2011 period.

• Spring Meeting: The Spring meeting is tentatively scheduled to include an eco-cruise of the Berry Creek/ Meadowlands on one of the Hackensack Riverkeeper’s pontoon boats. Bob Blauvelt has begun work on the preliminary details, but due to the logistics, the Spring Meeting may be limited to 30 people as a result of the capacity of the boats.

• Short Course: Professor Lee Slater of Rutgers University, who hosted the successful geophysical short course in Hartford CT in January 2011, has been contacted and is interested in presenting another short course in conjunction with the NE Section. Tentatively, the short course would include a field-oriented down-hole geophysical course possibly scheduled for late May or June 2012.

• ATGMSF Scholarship: Dennis McGrath provided a brief update on the 2011-2012 Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship (ATGMS) process. • Newsletter: Bill Prehoda was not in attendance during the December meeting and as a result there was not an update on the status of the Holiday Newsletter. However, a question was raised regarding why there is not a link on the National AIPG website to the electronic copies of the NE Section’s Newsletter, and why we are not providing section updates to National for inclusion in the Section News of the TPG. • Angelo Tagliacozzo Scholarship Fundraising: The profits from the January 2011 short course, sponsored by the NE Section, were used to contribute funding to the ATMGST and for disbursement of the 2010-2011 scholarships. However, it was noted that the proposed short course, slated for late May or June 2012, will occur after this year’s scholarships are awarded. Therefore, the profits from the short course will not be available in time to offset the cost of the awards. Funding the 2011-2012 scholarship awards should be revised during the January 2012 Executive Committee meeting.

What is your primary line of business?

Hager-Richter Geoscience, Inc. primarily provides high resolution surface and borehole geophysical services for engineering and environmental projects. We also work on water supply and archeological projects when we have the opportunity.

How long has your firm been in business?

I have been involved in the business from the start in 1984 and this year Hager-Richter celebrates 28 years in business.

How was your firm started?

Like so many consulting firms, Hager-Richter started on the kitchen table after I was ‘down-sized’ from my previous job when the company was sold in 1984. I started getting a few calls from colleagues for consulting work soon after, and was advised after some time to incorporate when I did not find a regular position with another employer.

Early partners moved on, and Hager-Richter has evolved through the years.

We currently have a terrific staff of fourteen hard-working individuals (plus one intern) and offices in Salem, New Hampshire and Fords, New Jersey.

In the recent past, what types of projects are you mainly working on?

We are very fortunate to work on a broad variety of both large and small projects so we are not dependent on one sector or one client for work. After a pretty dismal 2010, 2011 turned out to be exceptionally busy. We provided geophysical services for multiple fractured bedrock environmental investigations (New England, NY, NJ, PA, DC, IN, IL), some sensitive tunnel projects, some dams (ME, MA, KY, VA), a few nuclear and traditional power plants and wind farms (New England, NY, IL), several active and former military facilities for the US Army Corps of Engineers and NAVFAC (New England, NY, KY, IL), and continued consulting/third-party review services for a couple of international projects. We performed large subsurface utility mapping surveys at major and civil airports, and we provided geophysical services and four 1-day training seminars on the use of geophysical methods for highway projects to a state DOT. One of those “1%-ers� hired us to perform several weeks of continuous manned vibration monitoring during construction of his $15 million oceanfront mansion. I think we performed more crosshole seismic testing surveys for bridges and new construction in 2011 than we had in the previous ten years. It was a good year for us.

Are you working on any new lines of business, or have any developed in recent years that were generally not part of your business before?

We find that as our clients become increasingly familiar and comfortable with the benefits of using geophysics on their (Spotlight continued on page 40) -39-

projects, new doors of opportunity naturally open. Since we are almost always a sub-consultant to an engineering or environmental firm, we learned long ago that the ‘tail does not wag the dog.’ I guess we are client-driven.

How would you describe the current business climate?

Totally unpredictable. We had made it through 2008 and 2009 pretty well despite the national financial crisis of 2008, but while we worked on some wonderfully interesting projects in 2010, we found that there were simply not enough of them. 2011 turned into a great year for us, and we are very grateful and relieved that it did. We have a healthy backlog going into 2012, so I am cautiously optimistic that it will be another good year.

What are the primary issues currently affecting your business?

I think the primary issues affecting our business are completely outside our control – the uncertain economy in general, and the decreased budgets of state and federal agencies that drive much of the infrastructure and environmental work in this country in particular.

What part do local/ state/ federal regulations play in your business?

Local regulations do not affect our work much. State and federal regulations do drive some of the work that comes our way. For example, incorporation of the International Building Code in many state building codes has required more site specific shear wave velocity testing for determination of seismic site class for some projects, and that has brought us more work in recent years.

Northeast Section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists Spring Meeting Hackensack Riverkeeper

Hackensack River Boat Tour Save the Date—Wednesday, May 16, 2012 The Northeast Section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists is planning a nautical theme for our annual Spring Meeting. We are securing berths on the Hackensack River Keeper’s pontoon boats, the Robert H. Boyle and the Edward Abbey for an “Eco-Cruise” to explore the wilds of the lower Hackensack River.

We are currently securing a nautical itinerary to ensure that we target the most interesting areas of the wild, and not so wild, regions of the lower Hackensack River. The approximately two-hour boat tour will be fully narrated by a US Coast Guard-licensed Captain.

The two boats hold a total of 15 passengers each, so the nautical portion of the Spring Meeting will be limited to 30 people.

We are planning a guest speaker and dinner after the cruise, which will be open to all. Stay tuned for more details!

Rich, CPG-4433, Chairman It’s my privilege to provide this “Section Screening Committee Report” for the purpose of updating our Section’s Applicant activity this past decade. The Northeast Section’s Screening Committee continues to be comprised of four dedicated Members hailing from across the Northeast. They are: Donald Bruehl, CPG-2272 (MA); Carol Graff, CPG-06429 (NJ); Dan Toder, CPG-6668 (PA) and Andrews Tolman, CPG4474 (ME), as well as myself. We are interested in augmenting the Committee with one or two new Committee Members, so if you would like to be considered to serve, please contact any of the above, or myself, at 516.576.8844.

The function of the Northeast Section Screening Committee is to assist National in evaluating the qualifications and credentials of applicants seeking membership or affiliation in the Institute. Certified Professional Geologist (CPG) requirements include: for Education – evidence of at least 36 semester or 54 quarter hours in geological sciences with a bachelor’s or higher degree (official transcripts); for Employment - at least eight (8) years of experience beyond the bachelor’s, 7 yrs. beyond master’s, or 5 years beyond doctorate (verified and commented upon by each employer on “Geological Experience Verification” forms); and for required Sponsorship three (3) Sponsor’s Statements from professional geologists – two of whom must already be existing CPGs in good standing.

Applicants may provide other supporting documentation in addition to the requested minimum background information outlined above, for example, proof of State registration/ licensure, certificates of completion of specific course work, publications, references and/or company resumes, testimonials, etc. Applicants seeking to upgrade their membership in AIPG may provide other types of supporting Membership information if already affiliated with the Institute as a Professional, Associate, or Young Professional Member, and/or as a Student Adjunct.

The review process may occur at both National and Section levels. In the majority of cases, the procedure is relatively straightforward assuming the Applicant’s Application materials are complete, notarized, and submitted with the appropriate Application fee. To expedite the review process, National originates the Application and transmits it electronically to the Section Screening Committee Chairman. The Chairman reviews the Application and then directs it to one or more Screening Committee Members for their independent review of the Applicant’s qualifications and credentials. Once screening of the Applicant is completed, the Chairman then authorizes the results and returns the Application with confirming signatures back to National for action and/or further processing.

Delays may sometimes occur due to a particular question or need for further investigation or clarification of the Applicant’s materials, but this is rare. National routinely transmits complete Applications for Section Screening and the majority of Applications sent to the Section for Section Screening are reviewed within a few days and approved. gent Membership standards and professional ethical conduct that are hallmarks of our Certification and that set us apart from many other certifying organizations.

ANGELO TAGLIACOZZO MEMORIAL GEOLOGICAL SCHOLARSHIP 2011 – 2012 ACADEMIC YEAR INTERIM STATUS REPORT Dennis G. McGrath, CPG-8578 Chair, Scholarship Committee A total of 11 applications were received in December from undergraduate geology students attending 7 different colleges or universities in the states of Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont. Currently the scholarship committee (Sam Gowan, CPG-7284; Dean Herrick, CPG-7555; Len Rexrode, CPG-7204; Bill Prehoda, CPG -9289 (substituting this year for Arnold Schiffman, CPG-6589); Craig Werle, CPG-7412; Tom West, CPG8935; Dennis McGrath, CPG-8578) are evaluating each application based on the five evaluation criteria. Evaluation criteria include financial need, academic qualifications, career goals, achievements (e.g., awards, projects, publications, senior thesis, etc.), and the faculty recommendation letter.

Financial need is assigned the highest weight, academic qualifications are weighed slightly less, and the remaining three factors are all weighted equally. Each committee member will assign a numerical rating to each category for each application. After the numerical ratings are completed, I then assign an ordinal number to each score to remove any scoring bias that may result based on differences in how each committee member scores the applicants. The committee will then convene via teleconference to discuss the overall ratings and resolve any differences. If necessary, additional information may be requested from the student applicants during the evaluation process.

For example, last year 14 applications were received and a total of $13,000 was awarded to six students (e.g., two students received $3,000 each; two received $2,000 each; and two received $1,500 each). to provide the names of the scholarship recipients. You can also check the scholarship page on the NEAIPG web site (www.ne-aipg.org) for the list of scholarship recipients and their college or university. The web page will be updated once the distribution of scholarship checks is completed.

One of the more gratifying things that occurred after the scholarship awards were distributed last year was that I received acknowledgements from five of the six scholarship recipients. I was beginning to believe that sending a thank you letter had become a lost art to because it had become such a rare occurrence in the past few years. The response from last year’s recipients, however, was more than enough to prove me wrong (and I am very happy about that).

Statements in several of these letters also reinforce what many faculty members have also expressed to me in various correspondence: our scholarship is very highly regarded by many geology departments and students throughout the Northeast, and receiving our scholarship does make a significant difference in the lives of the students who receive an award. It is feedback like this that renews my own spirit and keeps me wanting to do more with this scholarship. I would like to share with you those responses (I underlined a few sentences or phrases that I think help to support my impressions described above).

25 Years Ago In The NEAIPG Newsletter Winter 1987 ● “In the tradition of Christopher Columbus”, the NEAIPG was proposing a “cruise to nowhere”, leaving Manhattan one day, cruising the high seas, and returning the next. How apropos that 25 years later we are also planning to “set sail” for the Spring Meeting 2012—albeit in the calmer waters of the Hackensack River. ● The Presidential Ramblings by President Robert Lamonica indicated that the available funds for the newly established Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship will be used that year to help students attend summer field camp. ● The New York Section of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Inc., welcomed NEAIPG members at its monthly luncheon meetings held at The Chemists Club, 52 East 41st Street. NEWS FROM THE NORTHEAST New Jersey News regarding the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Site Remediation Program.

It is a requirement that ALL responsible parties of contaminated sites now have an affirmative obligation to cleanup their sites AND must do so in accordance with established Regulatory and Mandatory Time Frames. The Site Remediation Program's regulations also have mandatory penalties associated with failure to comply and the first compliance deadline is rapidly approaching! Please see www.nj.gov/dep/ srp to read about the March 1, 2012 deadline and the Department's Compliance Assistance Alert letters that were sent to more than 3,900 responsible parties.

If you are a property owner, municipality, school, or other entity in any way responsible for the cleanup of a contaminated site you should familiarize yourself with the legislation known as the Site Remediation Reform Act (SRRA, N.J.S.A. 58:10C) and the corresponding regulations known as the Administrative Requirements for the Remediation of Contaminated Sites (ARRCS, N.J.A.C. 7:26C). This legislation established a new class of environmental consultant, the Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP). The LSRP program will be fully implemented as of May 2012.

IT’S TIME FOR A TRIP!

Letchworth State Park We were downstream on the Genesee River for our last “It’s Time for a Trip”, so lets ford upstream and visit the “Grand Canyon of the East”, a.k.a the Letchworth Gorge located on the Genesee River in Letchworth State Park, in Western New York. If you’ve never been there, its obviously not the Grand Canyon, however, for the East Coast, and Western New York— it is quite impressive!

The Genesee River originates in northern Pennsylvania and flows northward into New York State, discharging into Lake Ontario at Rochester.

The Letchworth Gorge area is over 20 miles long from Portageville to Mt. Morris, New York.

There are three major waterfalls (Upper, Middle and Lower) and the canyon walls rise over 600 feet in some areas.

tary to the Genesee creates the highest waterfall in New York State at a height of 350 feet.

The many overlooks along the trail system provide some impressive sights.

One spectacular sight is of the Portage Railroad bridge, which stands over 230 feet above the river and is over 800 feet long. The bridge is a metal pinned Pratt deck truss design and is still in use by Norfolk Southern railway (it is slated for replacement).

If you go to the park, the Glen Iris Inn is a must to see, and if you have the time, spend a night or two.

The park’s namesake, William Pryor Letchworth, a Buffalo businessman, purchased the property in the mid-1800’s, and extensively renovated an existing house by the Middle Falls. The Above: The Glen Iris Inn resulting house was fit to be named after the Greek Goddess of Rainbows, and there are many rainbows to be seen near the waterfalls.

Letchworth deeded the park to New York State in 1907.
