You might have noticed the recent uptick in news-geologic on the front pages or part of the 24hr cycle on TV. If you haven’t, I thought I would briefly discuss some of the more interesting ones..

Sinkholes in the News Call it what you will, there has been a recent uptick in the number of new sinkholes opening in the American southeast‌ from the Seffner, Florida incident in which a man tragically lost his life, to the much larger sinkhole in Bayou Corne, Assumption Parish, LA which at last check, had reportedly grown to a size exceeding 10 acres.

The status of the growing sinkhole changes frequently, but several methane venting wells have been drilled to release and flare the accumulated gasses, with three of the wells flaring methane at a daily rate of 12 - 32 mcf/day. http:// assumptionla.wordpress.com/author/assumptionla/ In a turn that no one could have predicted, the sinkhole has a facebook page, which appears to be updated regularly with the latest news.

groundwater extraction in Karst terrain, mining, and changing regional weather patterns, the fact remains that these types of disasters will continue. According to a 2010 report by the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, sinkhole related claims jumped 183% between 2006 and 2010, the last year covered by the report. Total claims during this period were reportedly $1.4 billion.

Landslides in the News A neighborhood on Whidbey Island, WA, just a few miles from Seattle, was changed forever when a steep hillside let go and ~200,000 cubic yards of material sloughed toward the Pacific Ocean. The geologist’s perspective on this one was straight forward: we knew this would happen, but of course we could not know when. Luckily, there were no fatalities, but the property damage is probably far from over. One house remains off limits, and a few more are restricted to daylight occupancy only. http:// www.nytimes.com/2013/03/30/us/landslide-in-washingtonshows-an-earth-on-the-move.html?_r=0 Chinese mine workers in Tibet were not nearly as lucky, unfortunately, when a hillside let loose in a massive landslide that wiped out the miners encampment. The slide has reportedly claimed 59 miners working for China Gold International Resources Corp., and rescue workers continue to search for at least two dozen more missing workers. The debris is reported to be in excess of 50m deep in places. Rescue efforts have been slowed by ongoing landslide threats posed by the steep terrain above the former miner’s camp. http://in.reuters.com/article/2013/04/02/china-landslide-tibet -toll-idINDEE93109O20130402 Fracking… sort of.

I am not about to wade into the debate, per se, but opponents of fracking have referred to a laundry list of negative side effects to make their case. Amongst those listed is one (Ramblings continued on page 16) -15-

effect that probably jumped out to every geologist that ever sat in a structural geology undergraduate course: earthquakes. The intent of hydrofracking is, of course, to fracture rock‌ but fractured rock does not an earthquake make.

However, I recall a case study from CO (citation needed) in which deep Class V waste injection wells were periodically operated, and an observant structural geologist noted that there was a distinct uptick in seismic activity during and immediately following the injection events. The explanation, of course, was that the injected waste increased the pore pressure in the formation, which decreased the normal stress between grains, and allowed for the release of strain in the form of small earthquake swarms.

Well, the folks at The Earth Institute at Columbia University and the USGS teamed up to write Potentially induced earthquakes in Oklahoma, USA: Links between wastewater injection and the 2011 Mw 5.7 earthquake sequence” in Geology, G34045.1, first published on March 26, 2013.

“In the last four years, the number of quakes in the middle of the United States jumped 11-fold from the three decades prior, the authors of the Geology study estimate. Last year, a group at the U.S. Geological Survey also attributed a remarkable rise in small- to mid-size quakes in the region to humans. The risk is serious enough that the National Academy of Sciences, in a report last year called for further research to “understand, limit and respond” to induced seismic events.

Despite these studies, wastewater injection continues near the Oklahoma earthquakes.” http:// www.earth.columbia.edu/articles/view/3072 Not exactly in the news… yet.

The United States imported 8.5 million barrels a day (mbd) of crude oil in 2012, do you know which 4 countries are our largest suppliers? Canada (2.4mbd), Saudi Arabia (1.4mbd), Mexico (0.97mbd), and Venezuela (0.9mbd). http:// www.eia.gov/dnav/pet/ pet_move_impcus_a2_nus_epc0_im0_mbblpd_a.htm Mexico’s Cantarell oilfield, was discovered in 1976, and at the time was the third largest oilfield in the world. However, this super-giant has been in steady decline since 2006. Mexico’s national oil company, Pemex, has tried to slow declining output by injecting natural gas and using other “enhanced” recovery methods. Cantarell’s production slid 74 percent between 2006 and 2011, to 449,000 barrels a day. Lest you think this was a hiccup in production, Cantarell’s output fell a further 14 percent to 400,000 barrels a day between April (Ramblings continued on page 21) -19-

2011 and April 2012. Mexico’s domestic consumption (demand) has remained fairly constant over the period, averaging just under 2mbd since 2006. This means that Mexico’s ability to export crude oil is very quickly deteriorating; in 2005 Mexico had a production surplus of 1.75mbd, this has fallen to just over 0.5mbd is eight short years. The impact of decreased oil sales not only impacts us here; Mexico may be our third largest supplier, but the Mexican govern(Ramblings continued on page 25)

ment derives vast income (government revenue) from those oil sales. What happens when our neighbor to the south, home to ~110 million people, loses its largest national income stream? What will happen to a government that no longer has the ability to meet payroll?

There is an example from the headlines‌ look at a similar graph for Egypt, below. When a nation makes the transition from a net petroleum exporting nation to a net petroleum importing nation, history has shown that there are few options.

Egypt, you may recall, recently underwent a revolution and the new government has yet to address the problems they were supposedly installed to solve. Time will tell, of course, but I suspect the turmoil there is far from over.

has been in steady output decline since 1999, the UK became a net importer of petroleum in 2005, with a growing wedge of imports every year since. Their troubles have been recently compounded by two especially cold winters, and their economy continues to struggle along with a supposed tripledip recession waiting in the wings. ANGELO TAGLIACOZZO MEMORIAL GEOLOGICAL SCHOLARSHIP 2012 – 2013 ACADEMIC YEAR FINAL STATUS REPORT Dennis G. McGrath, CPG Chair, Scholarship Committee This year’s scholarship committee (Sam Gowan, Dean Herrick, Len Rexrode, Craig Werle, Tom West, Luke Mahier, and I) recently completed a review and evaluation of 11 scholarship applications received in December 2012. Evaluation criteria include financial need, academic qualifications, career goals, achievements (e.g., awards, projects, publications, senior thesis, etc.), and the faculty recommendation letter.

Financial need and academic qualifications were weighed more heavily than the other factors in accordance with the weighting scheme that has been used now for four years.

The committee then convened via teleconference to discuss the overall ratings, recommend an award pool, and select the award recipients.

I feel like I keep saying the same thing every year, but again we received another outstanding group of student applicants.

While academic achievement does not assure an applicant of receiving a scholarship, ten of the 11 applicants maintained greater than a 3.0 (out of 4.0) overall grade point average (gpa); five applicants maintained greater than a 3.7 gpa!

The academic qualifications presented by the applicants were outstanding, and many of the financial needs were compelling. The results of the evaluations among the seven committee members were very consistent this year, and the composite results reflected that consistency. The award amount for this year was chosen after considering quality of the applicants, performance of the trust fund over the past year, and the overall financial health of the NE Section. An award pool of $17,000 was selected as an appropriate award amount.

The top three applicants received comparable evaluation scores, so we decided to award $4,000 to each recipient; the other two recipients received $2,500 each. This represents a new record for the total annual award and a new record for an individual award (previous high award total was $13,000; previous individual award was $3,000). During the Executive Committee meeting on March 4, 2013, the committee presented the Board of Trustees with a recommendation to award a total of $17,000 to the five applicants. The Board of Trustees approved the recommendation.

Checks were mailed to each of the recipients. Each of the applicants that did not receive an award was sent an acknowledgement letter. Those that will maintain their eligibility for next year were encouraged to apply again. All applicants receive a complimentary one-year student membership in AIPG. I want to close by thanking each member of the scholarship committee for their time and effort evaluating the 11 applications and selecting the five scholarship recipients.

New Business: ATMGTF Scholarship: Dennis McGrath reported that eleven applications have been received and are currently under review. Due to Arnie Schiffman’s resignation from the Scholarship Committee, Dennis recommended Luke Mahier as a “floating” member of the Scholarship Committee for the current year and Luke accepted.  Section Ballot and Election: Dennis McGrath completed the election ballot for two-year terms (2013-2014) with candidates Bob Blauvelt as Treasurer, Tom West as Secretary and three At-Large members – Dennis McGrath, Jean Neubeck and Luke Mahier. All candidates are running unopposed. No President-Elect has come forward and the ballot will be presented without that post. Dennis will forward the ballot to National for on-line voting.  Upcoming Short Course: Bob Blauvelt indicates that the proposed mid- to late- April short course will be regarding DNAPL in fracture-flow environments and co-hosted by USGS, Rutgers and NEAIPG. The course will have 8 CEU’s for the NJLSRP and Bob will look into Connecticut and Massachusetts credits for the course also. Sponsors will be solicited for the course. A quorum was not available to vote on the course, and this will be done via email since the next ExCom meeting in March will be too late for planning purposes.  Newsletter Editor Status: Mike Greenman has volunteered to be the interim Newsletter Editor. Bob Blauvelt developed an advertisement for hiring a professional editor and such a position was discussed. Dick Young (not present) emailed his opposition to such a position. Since there was no quorum, the issue was tabled for a vote at a later date.  Website Solutions: Bob Blauvelt developed a Web-Site functionality description for upgrading the NEAIPG website.

Bob subsequently obtained a quote from SJM Solutions, for a cost of $1,000. Bob and Jeff Frederick also viewed a webinar

by StarChapter and they submitted a proposal for $1,000.

Jeff and Bob were impressed with StarChapter and recommended their proposal. The vote on utilizing StarChapter for the website upgrade was table until a quorum was available.

Jeff indicated he would send out an email for an on-line vote.  Spring Meeting: The group proposed to have the Spring Meeting near New York City as the last meeting was held near Albany. The last lecture at Lamont Doherty was successful and it was agreed to attempt to hold the spring meeting there. Bob Stewart will contact Lamont and determine the availability of a speaker and potential topics. Jeff Frederick volunteered to look into dinner possibilities in the area.

Bob Blauvelt suggested a dinner speaker also, possibly a student or two (and/or ATMGTF recipient). May 15 is the tentative Spring Meeting date.

Northeast GSA – Bob Stewart indicated he will staff, the NEAIPG booth at the Northeast GSA meeting in New Hampshire and anyone else interested is welcome to join him.

NYSCPG Update

By John M. Nadeau - CPG The New York State Council of Professional Geologists (NYSCPG) has been working behind the scenes during the early part of the 2013 Legislative session with our lobbyist, Peter O’Connell, to advance our licensure bill. Now that the New York State budget has been passed, we can now focus on moving our legislation. NYSCPG has a meeting with the Deborah Glick, the Chair of the Assembly’s Higher Education Committee on April 16th to discuss the educational requirement and what language will be agreeable to all parties to move the bill through the Assembly this session.

NYSCPG has tried for the last year to demonstrate to Ms. Glick that the Bachelor’s degree is the national and international standard for professional geologists. This standard is similar to other design professions, like engineering and landscape architects. While we are hopeful that we can make our case in our meeting with Ms. Glick, we are prepared to discuss the Master’s degree requirement for licensure. We were told in our meeting with Ms. Glick in March of 2012 that the educational requirement is the only thing holding our bill from passing in the Assembly.

The Council is prepared to negotiate language that would be acceptable to NYSCPG and the Committee Chair to move the bill onto the committee’s agenda. There are several key points that need to be decided, but from earlier discussion we would expect there to be a “grandfathering” period. This period would allow all working geologists to be able to obtain a professional license with a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and the required work experience without having to pass the ASBOG exam. This would not require working professionals to return to school to obtain a Master’s degree in order to hold a geologist’s license in New York (as long as they obtained their (NYSCPG continued on page 42) -40-

license during the grandfathering period).

On the Senate side of the legislature, we have received word from the office of Carl Marcellino, our sponsor in the senate, that our bill will be on the agenda for the Senate’s Higher Education Committee once they return from their Spring Recess. This should occur the week of April 15th, and we should see the bill make its way through that chamber by mid-May. Thanks again to Mr. Marcellino, our long time sponsor and strong proponent.

NYSCPG will have members of the Board of Directors at each of the regional meetings in the coming months to keep everyone apprised of the situation and allow for people to discuss and comment on any potential changes to our bill’s language.

An open letter from Raphael Ketani, CPG 9003 I have been trying to promote the profession of geology for a number of years. One thing that I've learned is that there is a serious lack of interest in all things geological until a crisis happens. Then, all eyes are focused on the issue. Examples of this are the EXXON Valdez spill, the Macondo well spill, the eruption of a volcano, or an earthquake like the ones that hit southeast Asia and Japan. However, once the story has been in the news for awhile, the level of interest quickly drops.

This is unfortunate because geology is a very interesting subject. I say this not because I am a geologist, but because geology brings all of the sciences together and shows how they relate to one another and how they affect our lives. Though, when I try to talk to people about geology, I get the impression that they perceive the subject as having very little meaning - sort of like discussing the number of bugs one finds when you turn over a rock in a garden. People make a little small talk with me and move on to another subject. I can't even get the other geologists in my office to hold onto a geology conversation. They would much rather talk about the usual daily subjects such as politics, money, health, the weather, television shows and so forth. So us geologists need to do a lot more (Letter continued on page 46)

to promote our profession and to get people to understand and be interested in geology.

To do this, I think one of the best methods of introduction to the subject of geology would be to have a "show and tell" presentation. I'm not talking about just the simple show and tell that is presented to elementary school kids (though, this is a good place to start), but also somewhat more sophisticated presentations in front of church groups, high school science classes, science clubs, community board meetings, during lunch hour breaks in offices (both government and private), at historical and natural science museums of all kinds, senior citizen centers and so forth. These presentations can be stand alone subjects, such as one on general geology or local geology, or can be one of a series of presentations as a continuum of a special geology subject. A slide show by itself would work well as a presentation. However, it may have to be changed to meet the intellect and interest of the expected audience. A slide show with rock samples - even an active display - would be better.

The presentation would not rest just on the quality of the materials being used, but also on the energy of the presenter! This person would have to show enthusiasm, but should not be so animated as to put the audience off. One should also not look like he or she just came in from the field unwashed, nor should one look like a model. In other words, one should look believable - maybe neat, but a little rugged (the Indiana Jones look comes to mind - with the music theme?). If the subject is specialized, then the presenter had better be very knowledgeable. Nothing will turn off an audience more than sounding like you don't really know what you are talking about. A lot of uhs and ummmmms don't help. Also, the presenter must be polished, consistent and comfortable in front of an audience. Some of the most successful presenters are motivational speakers (though, I never really thought that any of their speeches had a lot of substance). Finally, the presenter must make a commitment to make presentations on a regular basis if the program is to have an impact and "reverberate."

However, all of what has previously been said does not take into account the business end of making presentations. I'm not talking just about arranging for a time slot at whatever venue is chosen, but also things like making the public aware that there is going to be a presentation. This could be as simple as a poster in front of a building where the presentation will take place, or a printed piece of paper on a bulletin board, or an announcement by a religious leader at a church, synagogue or mosque just before the end of a sermon. Though one could buy a 15 second time slot on a not for profit radio station program or have the presentation advertised on a local community cable station. Of course, this takes money and therein could lie the success or failure of the presentation program.

Perhaps some local geological organizations could help out in this matter?

Also of concern would be obtaining equipment for a presentation and moving it about. Who would be responsible for this equipment? Lastly, but not the least important is whether liability insurance would be needed at some venues and security. In some areas of the United States, such as big cities, any advertisements regarding a geology presentation could bring out large crowds which could contain unfriendly elements. Some places would be reluctant to allow the presentations or may restrict the size of the audience. There is a lot to consider if you want to present geology these days!

Well, that's all I have to say regarding the matter. I hope there are geologists out there who have the time and energy to get involved - particularly you retired folks!

LET’S TAKE A WALK THE NASSAU SUFFOLK GREENBELT Although not as rugged as our last walk, the Nassau Suffolk Greenbelt Trail offers a pleasant stroll for those living on Long Island. The trail, marked with white blazes, is 19 miles long and runs from Merrick Road in Massapequa on the south shore of Long Island to Cold Spring Harbor on Long Island Sound. left at each end. As the trail passes through several state and local parks,, additional side trails can be taken. The trail passes through the Massapequa Preserve, Bethpage State Park, Trailview State Park, Stillwell Woods Park, and Cold Spring Harbor State Park.

Parking is available at many points along the way.

The trail offers a variety of short hikes that are suited to any level of physical ability. The southern end beginning at Merrick Road, is level and follows along the shore of Massapequa Lake occasionally joining an asphalt path until it finally wanders into the woods until it rejoins the paved path to cross Sunrise Highway. This section is approximately a mile long.

pequa Preserve and enters the woods again. This section is still level and continues through the Massapequa Preserve and crosses several local roads as well as crossing a bridge over the Southern State Parkway. At this point, the trail follows along the Bethpage State Parkway until it enters Bethpage State Park. From the Northern End of Bethpage State Park the trail crosses Hay Path Road and enters Trailview State Park. This stretch of the trail from Hay Path Road to approximately the Northern State Parkway is less wooded and not as interesting to walk as the northern end which follows. Once crossing the Northern State Parkway the trail enters a wooded area and continues north, crossing Jericho Turnpike. There is a large parking area at Jericho Turnpike, and many hikers and mountain bikers begin their hikes here on separate trails. At this point the trail meanders around the knob and kettle topography of northern Long Island.

This part of the walk until its conclusion at Cold Spring Harbor, is quite hilly and strenuous. The trail passes under the Long Island Railroad and then continues through a bamboo forest followed by an evergreen forest as you enter Stillwell Woods Park. Probably the best stretch of trail is between Harbor Road and the terminus at Cold Spring Harbor. The trail follows around the glacial hills of the north shore. One should wear decent footwear , since the trail in this area is well worn and many of the tree roots make the footing a little Less than perfect. This last stretch of trail is lined with mountain laurels and rhododendrons, which blossom in the spring. The trail concludes with a flight of stairs, that bring you down to street level and a parking area.

For those wishing to walk the entire trail, there are hikes led by local outdoor groups. They also conduct hikes of parts of the trails.

Although the trail is generally well marked, recent storm damage has taken down trees with the white blazes. Most have been replaced. Markings in Bethpage State Park leave something to be desired. One should be familiar with the standard trail blazes, which indicate turns in the trails. Also watch out for the occasional biker who takes the walking trail instead of the bike path.

BIOSWALES by Mike Greenman CPG-10442 Unknown to many people living and working in New York City, a large infrastructure project is rapidly proceeding. The project headed by New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) is designed to stop rain runoff from reaching the waterways surrounding the City. New York City, like many other older cities, has in many areas a network of combined sewers which handle a combination of storm and sanitary waste. Sewage treatment plants are designed to handle twice the amount of dry weather discharge. When flow is heavy after a severe storm, the excess runoff, which includes a mix of storm and sanitary waste, is diverted into the harbor to avoid damage to treatment plants. Remember the beach closings after some heavy storms?

Streets and sidewalks make up approximately 27% of the land in areas with combined sewers. In 2010 NYC released a Green Infrastructure Plan which called for source controls, measures that would divert water from reaching the sewers, to manage flow from these impervious surfaces. For the past two years NYCDEP has designed and tested a system of bioswales, or vegetated source controls. These bioswales are installed along the curbs of city streets. Information gained from these pilot systems has led to improved designs for future bioswales.

In all, the City intends to put in approximately 4000 of varying designs. The program is being jointly designed and run

by NYCDEP along with the Department of Transportation (DOT), Design and Construction (DDC), and Parks and Recreation (DPR). Test borings were performed for the pilot program and are currently underway for the main project. Due to the large quantity of borings, several test boring contractors are being used as well as several engineering consulting firms. In general each site requires two borings, one fifteen foot boring to identify the soil characteristics, and one ten (Bioswales continued on page 60) -59-

Bioswale located on Prospect Avenue in the Bronx feet. Information gained from these tests is used to determine the drainage capabilities of the local soil. Bioswales are designed to be placed upstream from an existing catch basin and look similar to a tree pit. Water flowing along the curb is diverted through a depressed curb and infiltrates through the top layer of soil and vegetation. Excess water is allowed to escape through a second depressed curb. Originally, a cast iron curb inlet was designed, however it proved problematic as debris would clog the inlet. Beneath the vegetation is a mixture of engineered soil consisting of gravel and glass, or storage chambers. The optimum soil combines both good permeability, and the needs to retain enough water for the plants in the bioswale. The plants chosen show a propensity for thriving in both dry and wet seasons. Ultimately eight designs were chosen for use throughout the City. Design also required that maintenance be as low as possible.

The pilot program included a variety of monitoring which included pressure transducers to monitor flow into the system, flow turbines to measure flow rates inside the inflow and outflow pipes, and piezometers to monitor water levels. Rain gauges were installed to measure local precipitation. Soil moisture sensors were also installed to measure capture volume and evaluate water movement. Hydrant flow tests were performed at the end of each monitoring season to ensure that the bioswales are working correctly and to calibrate the monitoring equipment.

The performance at each location is dependent on the drainage area, height of the water table, and surrounding soils and geology. Drainage area is determined by the area of impervious surfaces that channel rain into the bioswale.

Sites with larger drainage areas generally have shown to have lower capture rates. In general capture rates were also best for storms with less than 2 inches of precipitation.

Average capture rates for all size storms had an average of 59%, while storms with one inch or less had average capture rates of 73%.

Maintenance of bioswales was a critical goal. The four agencies (DEP, DDC, DOT and DPR) signed on an agreement that defines each agency’s responsibility. DPR will maintain the sites for the immediate future, since they have the expertise to manage vegetated systems. Also in the works are plans to partner with community organizations to develop stewardship programs to maintain the systems as well as working with school groups to use the systems as a learning tool.

The Spring Meeting was held in Albany, NY, in conjunction with the Capital District Geologists. There was a panel discussion on Groundwater Resources of the Capital District.

An issue of concern, as expressed by Editor Russ Slayback, was the ongoing debate about whether state registrations weaken AIPG certification. He questioned support of the National Committee toward the Northeast Section. The Executive Director, Vic Tannehill had recently resigned and there was a hope of positive change between the Northeast Section and National.

There was an “In Memorium” obituary of R.M. (Max) Leggette who had passed away on February 2, 1988. Max founded one of the leading firms of ground water geologists and was a charter member of the AIPG. Many of our members still work for Leggette, Brashears and Graham.
