Presidential Ramblings Jeff Frederick, CPG It doesn’t happen at every meeting, but we gathered in the auditorium at the NYS museum, and there was barely enough room for us all to sit. The following brief remarks were made prior to the presentation regarding the state of the licensure bill that has recently passed the two houses, and awaits the governor’s signature.

The NE Section of AIPG has struggled in recent years to maintain the involvement of our long-serving volunteer executive committee and board members, while trying to breathe “new life” into our ranks and transition roles and responsibilities. At the same time, it seemed that overall participation in professional organizations (of all kinds) has been on the decline.

This gathering seems to give the lie to that assumption.

We may go by different group names, we may associate by different regions, and we may meet at different pubs or restaurants to discuss our business. But clearly, the state of the practice of geology in NY State is strong.

And the passage of the licensure bill will promote and strengthen the profession to which we have all dedicated our intellectual and professional lives.

Why Do We Join Professional Organizations?

Being involved in a Professional Organization means being aware of the professional landscape; it means contributing to something greater than “me” and “now”… it necessarily involves thinking about the issues that affect the broader profession, not just “your job”, and contributing to the future standards and practices in our chosen field.

Jobs & Information Sharing – NE-AIPG gatherings are a great way to spend a few hours with like-minded professionals, do discuss business and share experiences. In addition, these meetings provide an excellent opportunity for young professionals to network and develop contacts, which can be critical in that everstressful search for the first job! The NE-AIPG website is now functioning fully, and there are two active job postings on our website! More to follow…

Mentoring - Let’s face it, there is a lot of experience gathered in one room when we hold these meetings. I see a lot of grey hair in the audience, and each of those grey hairs was earned.

Young professionals have much to learn, and our duty to pass along the knowledge and wisdom of our years is not just limited to the basic “do this, do it this way” grind that goes on from 9:00 to 5:00, M-F. Teaching/Learning can occur through one or more of several modes; visual, auditory, tactile, etc. Mentoring involves weaving a tapestry that uses direct instruction, storytelling, and social norming that allows for the passage of ideas and standards.

It is an opportunity to shape the professional landscape and culture through non-formal modes of instruction, and it remains one of the most powerful shaping forces in a young professional’s career. So if you are not already involved in a mentoring program, consider making the effort to save a young professional from just one grey hair. Your knowledge and experience matter!

PD & Training Opportunities - Increase your knowledge and credibility, discuss techniques and best practices with any number of experts in their field. These meetings are social by construct, but a great many technical conversations take place.

Also, it’s a great way to participate in the planning of future training opportunities, like our upcoming short courses. Watch our website for upcoming PDH opportunities!

Networking & Advocacy - Meeting and knowing like-minded individuals, developing relationships and opportunities is not just for young professionals or job seekers. You can never know too many fellow geologists. Also, as recent events in the legislature have shown us, these gatherings provide the ability to steer the course of events (like NYS licensure) to strengthen and preserve the standards by which we measure ourselves and the professional practice of geology.

Scholarships – While most of us are long past the point in our lives when we might benefit from receiving a scholarship, the Angelo Tagliocozzo Memorial Scholarship Fund is one of the most rewarding facets of this organization. Since inception in 1987, the trustees of this fund have awarded $157,550 in direct awards. That is a tremendous amount of money for a donations -based scholarship fund. These awards go directly to young geologists when they need it most: late college years (Jr. and Sr. year) when the money starts to run low and the coursework starts to get really difficult.

This past year, we broke several records 



Highest award pool: $22,000.



Highest individual award: $5,000.

At future meetings, we will be discussing ideas to try to reinvigorate the rate of donations to the fund; we have not received a direct donation to the ATMSF in several months. Secretary’s Report: Minutes prepared by Michael Grifasi. May and July 2014 meeting minutes were reviewed and minor edits recommended. A motion was made, seconded and there was no further discussion.

The two previous meeting’s minutes were approved for publication in the newsletter.

Treasurer’s Report: The status of the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geologic Scholarship (ATMGS) fund was discussed. The ATMGS increased in August.

Bankcard fees were briefly discussed. Fees have been reduced, if not eliminated, due to transfer to the on-line system. The Section budget is currently in good standing. Considerations were made concerning the possible subsidizing of dinner at the October 15 th meeting.

Correspondence: National extended thanks for $1,000 donation for the annual meeting in Prescott, AZ.



Old Business:  Voting: Voting for vacant Section positions to wrap up on September 11th. It was stressed that all Executive Committee (EX COM) members cast their vote prior to closing. Thanks were given for those accepting the request to serve.





Spring Northeast GSA Meeting: Meeting scheduled for March 23 through 25th, 2015. Additional volunteers from NE-AIPG needed to operate the booth with Ray Talkington. A flyer will be prepared to advertise the ATMGS.



Domain Name: The current domain name has expired. From this point forward, Star Chapter will maintain the domain name to prevent this issue from reoccurring in the future.



Directory of Members (DOM): The DOM was discussed. In the past, vendors have requested printed copies of the DOM for distribution to their clients.

The EX COM discussed the possibility of either allowing vendors to print the DOM on their own or providing printed copies to specific vendors. It was noted that a criteria for evaluating which vendors would receive printed copies would need to be established.

Potentially, this perk could be utilized as an advertising incentive. The allocation of Section funds for directory printing and distribution was briefly discussed.

New Business: Fall Meeting: Jean Neubeck indicated that the anticipated advertising goal would be met for the fall meeting. A flyer, which will include the coordinated event(s) agenda, is currently in preparation with the intent to circulate by the end of the week.



NE-AIPG s working with NYSCPG to develop banners for the meeting. HMPGA, Long Island Association of Professional Geologists (LIAPG), Buffalo Association of Professional Geologists (BAPG), and Central New York Area Professional Geologists (CNYAPG) are also expected to add fall meeting information to their respective newsletters. NE-AIPG handling all registrations but is currently off-line. In the meantime, registrations can still be paid via mail or at the door. 

AIPG National Meeting: Jean Neubeck to be the Section designate for the national meeting, substituting for Jeff Frederick.



Short Course: Bob Blauvelt provided additional details on the short course that the Section is planning to present jointly with USGS. This fractured bedrock course is anticipated to be held in mid-October. The course would consist of a half day at the Technical College of New Jersey and a half day at the Naval War Center.

Additionally, a “GIS for Environmental Professionals” short course is anticipated to run in mid-November.

This occurrence is being timed to coincide with the NJ Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) program license renewal.



Publication Schedule: The backlog in the publication of the newsletter was discussed. Chris Proce taking over newsletter responsibilities moving forward (including holiday mailer). The Spring newsletter is completed in DRAFT and the Indian Summer newsletter is being compiled. Newsletters anticipated to be distributed in October. The Indian Summer newsletter will include approved minutes for both May and July. Currently in need of “thank you” letters and scholarship info to include in the newsletter. It was noted that the issuance of the Indian Summer newsletter should be accelerated, if possible. Additionally, hydraulic fracturing at the Pittsburgh Airport was briefly discussed as a potential newsletter topic.

NE Section Hosting AIPG 2016/2017 Annual Meeting: The possibility of hosting the 2016 AIPG Annual Meeting was discussed. Jean Neubeck agreed to assess the overall workload while attending the 2014 meeting. It is estimated that, despite National conducting the majority of the work, the coordination effort required by NE-AIPG would be substantial.

While it may be too late to commit to the 2016 meeting, 2017 would remain a possibility. The need for outreach to universities to schedule field trips was mentioned. New York City was briefly considered as a potential location to host the meeting.

Adjournment – 5:29 pm: Motion made, seconded – no discussion. Motion for adjournment passed and the meeting adjourned.

NE-AIPG Fall Meeting – October 15, New York State Museum, Albany, NY Those of you who attended the Northeast Section’s Fall Meeting witnessed a major convergence of geologists throughout New York State and the Northeast! Almost 170 geologists and associates descended in Albany, as NE-AIPG conducted a joint meeting with the New York State Council of Professional Geologists (NYSCPG).

The special interest of this event was due to the recent legislative passage of the bill to regulate the practice of geology and license geologists as professionals in New York State. The bill is not quite law yet, but is awaiting transfer to Governor Cuomo’s office for his signature. Stay tuned to this newsletter for an update when the governor’s office receives the bill.

Also joining forces with NE-AIPG and NYSCPG were four local professional organizations in New York, including the HudsonMohawk Professional Geologists Association, the Long Island Professional Geologists Association, the Central New York Association of Professional Geologists, and the Buffalo Association of Professional Geologists. The joint meeting at the museum coincided with the Open House of the New York State Geological Survey, which provided a rich backdrop of geological exhibits. The Open House highlighted the geological survey professional staff and the multiple resources available to the public.

The reach of NE-AIPG and the NYS professional organizations was apparent in the participation level throughout the northeast.

Attendees traveled across a wide region, from the Boston area and New Hampshire to Buffalo (east to west), and from Plattsburgh to New Jersey and Pennsylvania (north to south). More than 100 different companies, universities, public agencies, and individuals represented a range of geological practice areas from consulting, business and industry, regulatory sectors, academia, and research.

The reception and bar in Elk Pond drew a thirsty and friendly crowd.

Events ran from early afternoon into the evening. The afternoon included well-attended business meetings and guided tours of Museum collections by NYSGS personnel. Offered as the traditional NE-AIPG field trip following the Executive Committee meeting, approximately 22 people attended one or both of the special tours of the vertebrate paleontology and mineral collections accompanied by Dr. Robert Feranec and Dr. Marian Lupulescu, respectively. The evening reception in Elk Pond provided ample opportunity to meet, mingle, connect and reconnect with geology friends and associates across the Northeast. Of course, the good company included mandatory “cold beverages� and a variety of appetizers that were enjoyed by all.

The NYS Museum Open House offered an opportunity to meet the researchers and view the collections. Attendees met and mingled among the geological exhibits.

The main event during the evening was the informative presentation by NYSCPG President John Nadeau that outlined the process and future steps toward regulating geology, and what licensure will mean to individuals and corporations practicing geology in New York. NE-AIPG President Jeff Fredrick initially addressed the audience in Huxley Theater. Jeff’s talk stressed the importance of both joining professional organizations such as AIPG and becoming a mentor to young geologists. Jeff called on those present to volunteer and to actively participate, including assisting young professionals and students to develop and further their potential.

The main presentation provided information on the pending licensure of professional geologists in New York to an audience of almost 170 geologists and guests.

The Q&A session drew several provocative questions, which were answered by John Nadeau (NYSCPG) with assistance from two representatives of the NYS Education Department.

Following the NE-AIPG and NYSCPG presentations, the crowd enjoyed more food and networking among the geological exhibits. For those that just couldn’t get enough geology, the evening culminated in a glacial presentation by Dr. Andrew Kozlowski that was attended by almost 70 people. Andy covered the history of glacial events in New York State, and presented new information that updates the age of some glacial sediments, especially tills, that indicate the tills are significantly older than previously calculated.

Geologists from across the Northeast enjoyed networking and catching up with associates.

260-Foot Siberian Crater You may not have heard, but during the past summer geologists discovered a dramatic 260-foot crater in Siberia. Russian geologists have recently been able to climb to the bottom of the crater in an effort to perform tests and provide amazing photos. This past month, the tem was able to get to the bottom of the newly formed crater, which is located on the Yamal Peninsula in northern Siberia. They're hoping to find clues that could explain how this and other similar phenomenon were formed.

One theory is that gas hydrates caused an underground explosion.

Gas hydrates are ice-like forms of water containing gas molecules, including methane. They can be found in permafrost regions such as northern Siberia, but also under the oceans in some parts of the world.

Another explanation is that it's a pingo (also known as a hyrolaccolith) which is a block of ice that's grown into a small hill in the frozen arctic ground. When this ice eventually melts away, it leaves an exposed crater.

Salaries for petroleum geologists showed an overall increase during the past year – in some categories, significantly so – but not all tasted the raise.

This year’s annual AAPG salary survey shows a weighted average increase of 8.8 percent in geoscience salaries. Mike Ayling, of MLA Resources in Tulsa, who has conducted the annual salary survey for AAPG since 1981, quickly pointed out – just like last year’s results – that some age and experience groups within the survey did much better than the overall average.

Some groups were dramatically less than the average. At the top end of increases were the salaries for geologists in the “very experienced” (20-plus years) category, where a 19.5 percent increase was reported.

“People with a lot of experience are highly valued right now,” Ayling said.

Ayling also suggested other possible reasons for the apparent salary increase anomaly.

“Perhaps (it is) reflecting the value placed on their ability to contribute during a slack time of industry growth,” Ayling said.

Other possibilities: It reflects the industry’s “desire to retain experienced staff, and a bit to make up for lower increases in the past.

“They can do the job ‘now,’ and everybody needs the job done ‘now,’” Ayling continued. “They don’t have to be trained – and companies are not worried about them retiring.”

The 0-2 year experience levels showed a small increase – up 3 percent, according to the results – but recently graduated bachelor level geologists had a difficult time finding work.

“And the few that did worked for lower salaries, depressing the overall average,” Ayling commented.

“Mid-experienced geoscientists (from 10 to 19 years experience) actually saw little change reflecting considerable salary growth the past years,” he noted. “While these groups remain in strong demand, perhaps lethargic overall hiring has taken a toll on average salaries.”

If there was a demographic dynamic that could be discerned from this year’s findings, it may be that many older geologists are now moving into management – a possible indication that the anticipated industry “crew change” may be coming closer.

Ayling referenced many indications of pending retirements.

“I don’t know where they’re (replacements) going to come from,” he said.

“I suspect people are going to retire and then go to work for someone else on a part-time or consulting basis.”

The AAPG annual survey is based on U.S. salaries only, which are still considered the industry’s “gold standard.” The measurement for international salaries for explorationists is virtually on a country-by-country, caseby-case basis, Ayling said, which makes statistical averaging nonproductive beyond the boundaries of any specific country.

Also, many ex-pats are paid U.S.-based salaries, while the national oil companies opt to pay compatriots on a different, lower scale.

Ayling said his survey is based on employed, salaried geoscientists and cannot account for the large number of unemployed or underemployed individuals. Nor can these numbers take into account the compensation of individuals who are primarily paid in the form of consulting fees, retainers or overrides.

No attempt has been made to include any additional sums to account for employee benefits, bonuses, automobiles or other perquisites. The purpose of this survey is merely to provide a yardstick for those interested in accessing their compensation.

Ayling feels strongly that “compensation is often a secondary consideration when evaluating overall job satisfaction.”

New York State Council of Professional Geologists October 2014 Legislative Update The NYSCPG Board would like to thank everyone who made the trip to our Annual membership meeting at the NYS Museum, in Albany, on October 15th. Approximately 170 geologists from around the region attended the event, making this the largest meeting in recent years.

The current status of the NYS bill to regulate the practice of geology, and how the passage of the bill will affect the profession, were hot topics of the day.

Members of the Legislative Committee for NYSCPG met with staff members of Governor Cuomo on October 22nd. The meeting was intended to discuss any possible issues the Governor’s staff may have with the current version of the bill. Questions regarding how the bill will affect the land surveyors’ scope of practice were posed. We informed the staff members that we negotiated language with both the surveyors and the engineers, but we could not accept the language the surveyors proposed. Their request to practice minor engineering or geology is an attempt to expand the surveyors’ scope of practice and we would lose the backing of State Ed and other stakeholders.

It was a good meeting overall, and we are hopeful that the Governor’s office will follow-up with State Ed to confirm our position. It is anticipated that the remaining bills from the 2014 Legislative session will begin to reach the Governor’s desk after the election. NYSCPG will provide further updates as soon as action is taken on our legislation.

Amazing Drone Use The 2010 eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull spewed tons of ash into the atmosphere affecting trans-Atlantic flights and cost the airline industry and customers $7 billion in revenue. However, the recent eruption of the Bardarbunga (or Bárðarbunga in Icelandic) volcano in a remote area of central Iceland began spewing lava and ash in late August and has become one of the largest eruptions in the past several hundred years.

Where in the World Answers: The Giant's Causeway (known as Clochán an Aifir or Clochán na bhFomhórach in Irish[1] and tha Giant's Causey in Ulster-Scots)[2] is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption.[3] It is located in County Antrim on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles (4.8 km) northeast of the town of Bushmills. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986, and a national nature reserve in 1987 by the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland. In a 2005 poll of Radio Times readers, the Giant's Causeway was named as the fourth greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom.[4] The tops of the columns form stepping stones that lead from the cliff foot and disappear under the sea. Most of the columns are hexagonal, although there are also some with four, five, seven or eight sides. The tallest are about 12 meters (39 ft) high, and the solidified lava in the cliffs is 28 meters (92 ft) thick in places.

Much of the Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coast World Heritage Site is today owned and managed by the National Trust and it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern Ireland.[5] The remainder of the site is owned by the Crown Estate and a number of private landowners.

Where in the North East Answers: Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288 ft. (1,917 m) and the most prominent mountain east of the Mississippi River. It is famous for dangerously erratic weather.

For 76 years, until 2010, a weather observatory on the summit held the record for the highest wind gust directly measured at the Earth's surface, 231 mph (372 km/h or 103 m/s), on the afternoon of April 12, 1934.[a] Before European settlers arrived, the mountain was known as Agiocochook, or "Home of the Great Spirit".

The mountain is located in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains, in the township of Sargent's Purchase, Coos County, New Hampshire. While nearly the whole mountain is in the White Mountain National Forest, an area of 59 acres (24 ha) surrounding and including the summit is occupied by Mount Washington State Park.

NE AIPG 2014 Election Results The recent NE AIPG elections were amazingly successful because we not only were able to fill empty positions, but were also able to identify a President-Elect, a position vacant for the past year. Below are short summaries of the newest members of the Executive Committee of the NE AIPG. New ExCom Secretary

Michael G. Grifasi, CPG-11489 Michael G. Grifasi is a Project Manager and Senior Geologist at FPM Remediations, Inc., and currently resides in Syracuse, NY with his lovely wife and two wonderful children. With over 13 years of experience split between Upstate, NY and the New York City metropolitan area, Mr. Grifasi has spent a frigid winter coring rock on the Hudson River, sailed the picturesque Newtown Creek, aided in the digestion of foraminifera in a stable isotope lab, hunted for WWII-era UXO in the beautiful mountains of Wyoming, and even attempted to teach Earth Science to 8th graders in Queens. He received his BS in Geology from the University at Albany and holds a professional license in the State of Delaware.

Luanne Whitbeck, CPG-07923 Luanne Whitbeck is retired from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation where she spent her last 19 years working in the Bureau of Pesticides Management. In addition to reviewing the environmental fate of new pesticides proposed for use in New York State for their impacts on water quality, Luanne managed the drinking water sampling contracts under the State's Pesticide Reporting Law. Prior to that she spent 12 years working in the State's RCRA program and was responsible for the remediation of surface impoundments and landfills at active hazardous waste sites across New York State. Her career started at the New York State Geological Survey, mapping surficial sediments in the southern Adirondacks, and then working on the West Valley Demonstration Project, the repository for low-level nuclear waste in western New York.

She is an avid gardener, and is training to be a Master Gardener through the Cornell Cooperative Extension. She also travels around the US visiting areas with interesting geology that she didn't have time to visit before.

Luanne has a B.S. in Geology from SUNY Albany and an M.S. in Geology from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Christopher Brown, CPG-10599 Mr. Christopher Brown, Principal and Senior Hydrogeologist with PVE Sheffler, LLC, is the Director of Environmental Services for the Company. Since 1995 he has conducted and supervised geologic and hydrogeologic investigations related to hazardous waste site characterization, brownfields, petroleum spills, landfills, environmental due diligence, and conducted regulatory permitting for geologic characterization projects, including Class II, V and VI injection wells. Mr. Brown’s responsibilities include business development, client management, project management, construction management, regulatory permitting/ compliance, staff training and supervision. Chris received his Bachelors degree in Geology from Colgate University and his Masters degree in Geology from Binghamton University.
