Presidential Ramblings Jeff Frederick, CPG Spring is upon us, despite evidence to the contrary in many parts of the NE, and with it comes the usual busy season. Most geologists tend to have some component of field work as part of their professional lives. We either plan it, execute it, or both. And so the disappearing snow-pack, warming temperatures, and the appearance of that round orange-yellow ball in the southern sky are all indicators that it’s time to get out there and collect some data!

Health and Safety Moment As many of you are probably aware, a relatively new arrival on the scene in the NE is Giant Hogweed. This nasty, not-so-little plant should be on your mental checklist of “flora to avoid”, and from what has been published regarding its effects, it should rank somewhere above poison ivy and just below a sharp stick in the eye. AIPG National Meeting – 2018?

We here in the Northeast Section have been asked by AIPG National to consider sponsoring one of the upcoming National AIPG Meetings. It may come as a surprise, but we have not hosted a National meeting in the NE since 2004. That meeting was in Saratoga Springs, NY, and it was a very successful and well attended meeting. Time certainly flies, and many on the planning committee for that meting can attest, it feels like yesterday. Those involved in the planning will also remember that it required a tremendous amount of preparation, coordination, and attention to detail. While this remains true today, one significant change (since 2004) is that AIPG National now provides a great deal of support, including: coordination and contracting with the venue; transportation logistics associated with field trips; and promotion/advertising. This leaves much work for the section, no doubt, but it will ease the burden on our all-volunteer executive committee and dedicated volunteers. Speaking of dedicated volunteers… if the thought of pitching in to help us organize a potential national meeting excites you, please contact us at info@ne-aipg.org. We are still in the preliminary stages, we haven’t formally decided on a venue (city or state) and we have yet to confirm with National; however, it is never too early to seek potential volunteers for such a large effort.

Northeast Section Spring Meeting The Northeast Spring Meeting was held on May 14th, and started off with a large group tour of Orchard Beach metamorphic geology at Pelham State Park, Bronx, NY, led by Pat Brock of Queens College. (See photos below).

Who knew there was this much bedrock to look at first hand in NYC. The field trip was walked through Orchard Beach in the Bronx of NYC. The Hartland Formation forms the bedrock beneath the Bronx east of Cameron's Line. The shoreline in Pelham Bay Park is an interesting location to study the crystalline basement rock comprising the Hartland Formation. The park is a good location to examine a variety of glacial materials, features, as well as modern coastal processes and habitats.

The beach is littered with large erratics derived from nearby bedrock sources.

One of the main highlights of the meeting was the awarding of Russell G. Slayback Awards to two of the most venerable members of the AIPG Northeast Section, Dennis McGrath and Dan St. Germain.

The award is given to individuals to: “HONOR AND RECOGNITION OF EXEMPLARY SERVICE, ABOVE AND BEYOND, TO THE NORTHEAST SECTION AIPG" Dennis has been involved with the Executive Committee since 1997 and has held essentially all positions from Secretary to President. most lasting contribution has most likely been his ongoing involvement in the ATMG Scholarship which he has worked tirelessly with over the past few decades.

Dan has been involved with the Executive Committee since 1998 and was the driving force behind the highly successful 2004 AIPG National Meeting at Saratoga Springs, NY, which set a new standard for such events.

He then went on to be elected as President of the National AIPG group. More detail on the Slayback award can be found on Page 26. The tradition of recognizing the efforts made by select members of the Northeast Section will continue at the next Fall meeting!

The Spring Meeting was held at Austin's Steak & Ale House in Kew Gardens Queens, NY. Food and drink were plentiful, and the atmosphere was even more enjoyable because we were able have a joint networking meeting with the LIAPG. Following the field trip, cocktails and the Slayback awards were given.

The night ended with a great presentation by Dr. Coch a professor of coastal geology at Queens College. Dr. Coch knew that Superstorm Sandy was coming. He has been warning for almost two decades that a major hurricane could take out New York. The habit earned Coch the nickname “Dr. Doom” — a sobriquet that he didn’t take kindly to. (“No serious scientist wants to be called Dr. Doom,” he says.)

Dr. Coch provided a dynamic review of the clear and present danger posed to the Northeast during upcoming hurricane seasons. He also prompted a wonderful back and forth discussion on the challenges We are sorry if you were not able to join us for the Spring Meeting, but there will be plenty of time to plan on attending the Fall meeting that will most likely be held in October.

The Northeast’s largest and fastest growing drilling and injection services company now supports 3 regional offices in addition to its headquarters in Bridgewater, NJ. NE-AIPG Financial Status Bob Blauvelt, Section Treasurer

Every month, I prepare two financial reports for review, discussion, and eventual approval by the Executive Committee. These collectively are called the Treasurer’s Reports and are critical to the smooth and efficient running of the Section. The NE SECTION REPORT describes the funds available to carry-out our day-to-day activities. It details monies received from dues, short course attendance, advertising revenue, etc. It also lists expenses such as our web-site hosting fee and Spring or Fall meeting costs.

Supplementing the NE SECTION report is a proposed ANNUAL BUDGET. In the ANNUAL BUDGET, I compare estimated revenue and expenses that we realized over the previous year and estimate what the coming year’s revenues and costs are likely to be. The ANNUAL BUDGET provides a basic road-map for the Executive Committee on the types of programs and services that can be provided to the membership. For example, NEAIPG was a major financial backer to the Council of New York State Professional Geologists in the recently successful licensing effort. Those donations were included in the ANNUAL BUDGET and approved by the Executive Committee before being disbursed.

The ANGELO FUND report illustrates the performance of the scholarship fund, which is invested in a capital growth mutual fund. This report illustrates mutual fund performance (increases and decreases) over time as well as contributions from members. The NE Section regularly contributes to the ANGELO FUND including fully compensating the Angelo Fund for its yearly scholarship awards which, in 2015, amounted to over $20,000.

Since 2008, when the fund experienced very flat growth, average annual returns on the NE Section and member donations have been in the eight to 11 percent range.

The NE Section is in a strong, stable financial position for 2015. We have a solid bank balance and are able to continue to support the ANGELO FUND at a very high level, subsidize the Spring and Fall meetings for students and our members, and consider requests for contributions to other worthy (geologic) causes. Similarly, the ANGELO FUND continues to grow and with the ongoing support of our members, it should soon be selfsustaining. All of this is possible only with the help of our advertisers and members. The Russell G. Slayback Award:

Sometimes, Good Things Take Time!

The Slayback Award was presented to two long-serving and highly-deserving NE/AIPG Section Geologists at the Spring Meeting, Thursday, May, 14, 2015. Please join us to recognize the awardees (see flyer announcement in this issue for details). Below is a brief history and purpose of the Slayback Award from Dick Young, CPG 335.

The concept of the Slayback Award is to provide: "HONOR AND RECOGNITION OF EXEMPLARY SERVICE, ABOVE AND BEYOND, TO THE NORTHEAST SECTION AIPG" Thus, the Slayback Award is intended to be presented on those rare occasions when truly landmark, exemplary service has been given to the Northeast Section of AIPG for a protracted period of time by an AIPG Certified Professional Geologist who is a Member of the Northeast Section. "On those rare occasions" is the operative phrase, as the Slayback Award was never intended to be "presented annually."

The formative concept of the Slayback Award was to honor Russ Slayback, CPG, for his remarkable service to the Northeast Section, which included:   

Numerous, long-standing roles on the Executive Committee, Leadership in fulfilling various Offices of the Section, Remarkable, long-standing commitment as Newsletter Editor for many years, Yeoman, protracted Service to the Section, in uncountable ways.

Anyone may provide written, descriptive nominations of candidates (and of their contributions to NE/AIPG) for the Slayback Award, by CONFIDENTIALLY submitting the nomination to any one of the previous recipients. Selection of Awardees is made by the previous recipients, in CONFIDENTIAL discussions with the NE/AIPG Section President. Although individual Members of the ExCom may be consulted for their input on a CONFIDENTIAL basis, the selection of recipients is NOT made by the ExCom. Confidentiality, to maintain the element of surprise in honoring the Recipient(s) and his/her/their long service, is a cornerstone concept of the Slayback Award. Confidentiality is also an important concept in

those rare cases where a CPG is nominated for the Slayback Award, but the decision is made not to proceed at that time.

(Slayback Award continued from page 26) Geological Scholarship and The Perpetual Trust Fund. On May 16, 2007, the Slayback Award was presented posthumously to Angelo Tagliacozzo, in honor of his long, extensive service to NE/AIPG.

Both well before and since Angelo was honored in 2007, it has been clearly recognized that there are several NE/AIPG Section Geologists who are long-serving and highly-deserving of the Slayback Award. A series of health, life, and work issues precluded the previous Slayback Award recipients from proceeding with presentation of the Slayback Award to these individuals, as anticipated in 2008 and 2009. In the Spring of 2010, it was clearly recognized that several exceptional Section Members (with very long histories of remarkable service) were clearly "way overdue" to be honored. Arrangements were made to proceed with the preparation and the presentation of the Slayback Award to several individuals, . . . only to have a variety of last-minute crises prevent that from coming to fruition. The press of work, other on-going volunteer work for NE/AIPG, real life, etc. resulted in the continuing delays. Now, in 2015, "overdue to be honored" is the case in spades!

Here is to catching up on this important recognition of exceptional NE/ AIPG Members.

October and December 2014 meeting minutes were reviewed and minor edits recommended. A motion was made, seconded and there was no further discussion. Both meeting minutes from October and December were approved for publication in the newsletter.

Treasurer’s Report: The status of the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship (ATMGS) fund was discussed. The ATMGS fund increased from November to December, 2014, reflecting an approximately 6.5% growth (exclusive of contributions). The NE Section budget is currently in good standing. The 2015 NE-AIPG proposed budget was reviewed and a discussion regarding particular line items ensued. It was suggested to consider increasing the travel/registration allotment for the 2015 National meeting in Alaska and potentially contributing to New York State Council of Professional Geologists (NYSCPG) for New York State licensure support. Additionally, it was noted that 2014 revenue was reduced without the intended short courses taking place within the calendar year. The short course climate is currently competitive, and it has become increasingly difficult to reach a larger audience. For future short courses, partnerships and more outreach are critical. 

Correspondence: Vickie Hill at AIPG National requested receiving NE Section newsletter for distribution. Chris Proce indicated that he will send newsletters to Vickie Hill.

Old Business: 2017 National Meeting: Jean Neubeck indicated that she spoke with Barb Murphy from the Arizona AIPG Section. National has taken over the day to day aspects of the meeting (hotels, contract, etc.). Section effort will involve determining the theme, selecting field trips, key note speaker(s), etc.

Section will also help with social events and associated entertainment. It was determined that a dedicated committee of four to five people is needed to plan this meeting. It was also estimated that 20 sponsors and exhibitors will be needed as well. A discussion took place regarding where the field trips will be.

It was indicated that a decision as to whether the NE Section will announce its interest to host the National Meeting would need to be made soon.

2015 Budget: Specifics regarding the 2015 budget are addressed above in the Treasurer’s Report. Following the budget discussion it was determined that minor revisions to the budget would be made for consistency. The Ex Com would consider making a donation to the NYSCPG at a later date.

New Business: ATMGS Fund Drive: Jeff Frederick discussed the end of year ATMGS fund drive. Donations of any size were/are encouraged.

It was indicated that many generous donations had been received/pledged. As of the end of December, total contributions neared $10,000. The Ex Com hailed Jeff for a job well done!

Website Options: It was indicated that website options were currently being addressed by Bob Blauvelt.

Spring Meeting: The spring meeting was discussed. It was determined that a venue and field trip ideas would need to be fleshed out by the March 2015 meeting. Downstate was considered as a potential location for the meeting which could include New York City or Long Island. Potential field trips could include a geology walking tour of Central Park or a Pelham Park tour. It was indicated that expenses should be minimized.

ATMGS Applications: Dennis McGrath updated the Ex Com on the application status of the ATMGS. There are currently 23 applicants, which is one less than the previous year. Of the 23 applicants, 18 different colleges are represented (a mix of private and state colleges), 17 of the applicants are women and six are men (similar to 2014). the selection committee which will convene in early February. The total award amount and awardees will be discussed at the March 2015 meeting.

Newsletter: Chris Proce discussed his “call for content”. The intent is to get members involved in the newsletter process, make it more inclusive, as well as more reflective of the NE Section membership. As it stands, the editor generates a majority of the content. The editor will continue to format member-provided content. The content deadline for the next newsletter was identified as January 16, 2015. Jeff Frederick indicated that he was updating the mailing list on the NE Section website. The newsletter is expected to be distributed by the end of February 2015.

Advertising: Advertising has allowed the NE Section newsletter to occur from 1980 to present, which has help set the NE Section apart from other sections. Advertisers are currently being contacted. An update concerning advertising income will be provided during the March 2015 meeting. Dick Young requested that the Ex Com provide suggestions for new advertisers.

ANNOUNCING THE RETIREMENT OF DENNIS MCGRATH It is with great joy, and a touch of sadness, that we celebrated the official retirement of Dennis McGrath of Thursday April 2nd. Dennis had been with Louis Berger for 6 years, coming from Malcolm Pirnie with a 20+ person contingent of friends and co-workers at the end of the first decade of this century. Many of us here have worked with and known Dennis for years, several of those present at Dennis’ farewell brunch had been working side-by-side with him for close to three decades. Dennis’ career as a professional geologist began in 1973, with his deployment to Alaska to conduct geotechnical evaluations during the construction of the Alaska Pipeline. Ask him about it at our next cocktail hour; the stories are very entertaining... (unless you work for OSHA ). In addition to the work one might expect during a long career in the environmental consulting field, Dennis also planned and executed several marine geophysical and oceanographic surveys from the Middle East to South America.

The Volcano Is Erupting . .

Dreams of volcanic eruptions may be uncommon to most people.

However, for a volcanologist, volcano-dreams are somewhat of a norm. This is why when I heard someone banging on my door at 3:30 a.m. and yelling about an erupting volcano I naturally thought I must be dreaming. I opened the door to find my frantic, wildeyed colleague, a Chilean volcanologist named Jose Luis Palma, insisting I go outside with him immediately.

As a volcanologist who tends to travel to and not away from gurgling mountaintops, the coinciding of a volcanic eruption with my trip to Chile couldn’t be better timed. The town of Pucón is 10.5 miles from the Volcán Villarrica summit and near enough to see the lava spilling out of the crater in massive amounts and pouring down the volcano’s slopes.

We remained transfixed on the volcano amidst other awestruck residents of Pucón. Authorities drove through the streets recommending evacuation and announcing the direction people should walk as cars were not permitted. The primary concern now was the destructive power of lahars that would be generated as the lava melted snow and ice on the flanks of the volcano. A previous eruption in 1971 produced lahars that destroyed the airport and property on the east side of Pucón, which is close to one of the major river drainages and routes out of the town. Thankfully, lahars from smaller eruptions such as this are confined to the river drainages on (Volcano story continued on page 42) -40-

the outskirts of the town, so Jose and I knew we were safe in our location.

The residents of Pucón clearly didn’t share this knowledge. Many evacuated on foot to the nearby hills.

Some carried backpacks and blankets, but most fled with nothing in hand. Several ran out without putting on shoes, a demonstration of a town that had not been (and still has not been) provided with accurate and sufficient information about the hazards, risk, and necessary preparations to reduce their risk.

As dawn broke we saw that the once ice-capped mountain was now smeared black. Tongues of lava extended more than half the way down the slopes and the top of the volcano was covered in ash. Luckily, there was no loss of life or major damage, but lava continued to seep down the slopes into the evening. School and shops remained closed throughout the day as residents slowly returned to town. Around noon I stood with residents in the center of town listening to the president of Chile address the people. She departed as swiftly as she arrived, leaving the townspeople with concerned faces of doubt. The people of Pucón know another

eruption could spell isolation from imports so by midafternoon the streets were bustling once more with fearful citizens gathering supplies.

The volcano remained eerily still for nearly two weeks after the eruption. Photos of the crater showed no active lava and no escaping gas. Seismic signals generated by the movement of lava also ceased. The volcano alert level was decreased to yellow and the mandatory evacuation zone of 6 miles, which I witnessed enforced on March 3rd by large military caravans, was decreased to a 1.8 mile exclusion zone. Anxiety in the town of PucĂłn slowly decreased, schools re-opened and business appeared as normal.

Fumarole activity (degassing) returned to the crater of Villarrica on March 14th, followed by ash venting around March 17th. Tremor began and continues along with episodic ash venting and mild strombolian activity, which prompted Chilean scientists to raise the volcano alert level to orange. The activity and excellent geology around Villarrica resulted in an exciting class for our students, who arrived from Boise State University and several other universities world-wide on March 14th for a volcano-geophysics and field volcanology course co-instructed by Dr. Jeff Johnson and myself. The students analyzed nearly real-time seismic and infrasound data, analyzed deposits from previous eruptions and the March 3rd eruption, and watched as changes in the volcano progress. No one knows when the next eruption will occur. Perhaps we will have another show before leaving this beautiful country, or perhaps the volcano will return to having a persistent lava lake as it has for the past 30 years. Northeastern Section Geological Society of America 50th Anniversary Meeting Bretton Woods, NH March 22 – 25, 2015 Dennis McGrath I have wanted to attend the Northeast Section Geological Society of America (NE-GSA) meeting for several years, but for a variety of mostly work related reasons, I never did. A combination of factors this year, including but not limited to AIPG's need to staff an exhibit booth and my rapidly approaching retirement date, all converged and enabled me to attend. I know that historically, NE-GSA has always been a strong supporter of student attendance and participation. So when I read the list of technical presentations and poster sessions, I discovered the names of many current and former applicants for and recipients of the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship. If I needed any more incentive, now I had it. I registered and reserved a hotel room!

This year, NE-GSA was returning to the Omni - Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, NH for their 50th anniversary meeting. They also met there in 2013 and had a very successful meeting, so the decision to go (Anniversary meeting continued on page 46)

back to the same venue was not difficult. After a nearly 7-hour / 350mile drive, I arrived at the hotel mid-afternoon on Sunday, March 22. It was a beautiful, clear day and the summit of Mt. Washington was clearly visible in the background overlooking the resort. I picked up my registration materials and found the location of the AIPG exhibit booth. Sunday night there was a two-hour Welcoming Reception and all exhibit booths were expected to be staffed during the reception.

I was totally amazed at the number of students and faculty attending this conference. Not surprisingly, the majority of those attending were from colleges and universities in the northeastern U.S. - the same schools that I contact every fall with a new scholarship announcement. It did not take long before faculty and students were stopping at the booth. AIPG now offers free student membership, so most were eager to sign up. Monday morning, Craig Hanson from Geosphere arrived to help me at the booth.

Craig is much closer in age to the students, has a very engaging personality, very knowledgeable about New Hampshire history, attractions and (Anniversary meeting continued on page 49) -46-

folk lore, and was a magnet in attracting students to sign up for a free AIPG student membership. By the end of the conference, we signed up 164 new student members!

The technical presentation and poster rooms were spread out over several different floors and two separate wings of the resort. To get back and forth between them, everyone had to walk along the Garden Corridor.

The AIPG booth was located in an ideal location on the Garden Corridor.

The booth was against the wall, but in front of the booth was a glass wall that afforded us the most fantastic views of Mt. Washington. Craig informed me that normally the peak of Mt. Washington is shrouded in clouds 60% - 70% of the time. During this meeting there was not a single day when the peak was obscured; it was clear, cold and sunny the entire duration of the conference. We had a direct unobstructed view of Mt. Washington the entire time!

I had the pleasure to meet three scholarship recipients and two applicants from this year; one recipient from last year; and another recipient from two years ago (who is now in graduate school). Some were giving technical presentations; others had poster presentations. It was the first time I had an opportunity to meet any applicant or recipient, and it was a wonderful experience. I also met about a dozen faculty members that I correspond with when the scholarship announcements and application forms are mailed in late August / early September. It was really great to put some faces to the names. Across the board, they all hold the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship in high regard.

I also participated in the Roy J. Shlemon Mentoring Luncheon on the first day. This was an opportunity for students to meet with professional geoscientists from different disciplines to discuss career paths and challenges.

The Main Dining Room was packed to capacity – I heard that the student response was so great, they could not accommodate everyone that wanted to attend. It was conducted like a speed dating exercise. Nine students at each table with one mentor. The sessions began with the mentor briefly describing their career, then the students had an opportunity to ask questions. At the end of each 15 minute session, the mentors moved to another table and started all over again with a different group of stu(Anniversary meeting continued on page 50) -49-

dents. The entire process was repeated five times. I had a good time; the students seemed to enjoy it also. Never did figure out though how the mentors were supposed to eat lunch during all of this!

Lastly, a group of four students from Richard Stockton College of New Jersey (Galloway, NJ – near Atlantic City) approached the booth and expressed interest in forming an AIPG student chapter on campus. This is something that the NE Section has wanted to do for a long time. I will be following up with those students and with National on what steps are required to establish a student chapter. I will report back to the ExCom, so I expect you will hear updates in the future newsletters.

McGrath, CPG Chair, Scholarship Committee The Northeast (NE) Section of the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) recently announced the recipients of the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship for the 2014 – 2015 academic year. A total amount of $22,500 was awarded to a total of 11 undergraduate students majoring in the geosciences. A total of 23 applications were received in December 2014 from undergraduate geology/geoscience students attending 18 different colleges or universities in the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island. Some facts and statistics that you may find interesting. The 23 applications received represent the second highest number ever received (last year set the record at 24 applications). Seventeen (74%) of the applications received this year were from women students.

This represents an increase over last year when 16 of the 24 (67%) applicants were women.

Once all of the application packages were compiled, they were distributed to each committee member. The Scholarship Committee, consisting of Sam Gowan, Dean Herrick, Len Rexrode, Laurie Scheuing (this year’s floating member), Craig Werle, Tom West and I are now evaluating each application based on five evaluation criteria.

Evaluation criteria include financial need, academic qualifications, career goals, achievements (e.g., awards, projects, publications, senior thesis, etc.), and the faculty recommendation letter. Financial need is assigned the highest weight (4X), academic qualifications are weighed slightly less (3X), and the remaining three factors are all weighted equally (1X). A complete application package consists of the four-page application form; a letter from the student describing (at a minimum) their financial need, academic achievements and career goals (usually 2 pages); a faculty letter of recommendation (usually 1 – 2 pages); and an official transcript (a new requirement this year that can add another 3 – 5 pages). Applicants may also provide supplemental information such as the FAFSA Student Aid Report (normally 5 pages), other financial information (1 - 2 pages), a resume (2 – 4 pages), text or abstracts of research projects / published papers / conference presentations (highly variable number of pages).

Without any supplemental information, a complete application package with all required components can be 12 pages; with supplemental information that can approach or exceed 20 pages. Any way you count it, it is a lot of material to review when you have 23 application packages!

After all results were tabulated, the candidate with the lowest ordinal score represented the entire committee’s top rated applicant. The results were then distributed and the committee convened via teleconference to (Scholarship continued on page 56) -54-

discuss the overall ratings, resolve any questions, decide on the amount of the award pool, and how the award pool will be distributed among the applicants. The process of using ordinals has been in place now for many years, and I think I can speak for the entire committee and say that we all feel that it results in an accurate representation of our collective efforts.

At the ExCom meeting on March 9th, the committee recommended to the Board of Trustees of the scholarship fund (the current AIPG-NE Section Officers), the names of the students to receive an award and the amount of each award. Checks were distributed to the students selected for award by the end of March.

This huge specimen of amazonite with smoky quartz is more than 30 by 21 inches in dimension. It reportedly is valued at $750,000, and took more than 1000 hours to clean and re-assemble. No surprise that armed guards were visible at the Tucson show - and no, the guards did not have a sense of humor as they patrolled and watched over their stations.

This striking specimen of aquamarine beryl and muscovite was priced at $25,000. A photo just can’t do justice to the rich blue translucent color. Other rare mineral specimens were priced up to $80,000. Some specimens were labeled “POR,” or “price on request,” therefore, there is no problem if you have $80K in your pocket, but if you have to ask… (I like bling as much as the next geologist, but I came home empty handed.)

New York State Council of Professional Geologists Spring 2015 Legislative Update The law that establishes the profession of geology in New York State was signed

by Governor Cuomo in November 2014. This law is identified as Chapter 475 of 2014. As a requirement to signing that legislation, the Governor noted that three specific Chapter Amendments were needed to 1) correct a typographical error, 2) allow flexibility in administrating future exams, and 3) to appoint geologists to the joint Professional Board for Engineering, Land Surveying, and Geology, in order to facilitate the regulation-writing phase in a timely manner. Those Chapter Amendments that were requested by the Governor passed both legislative houses in early March, and then were forwarded to Governor Cuomo’s office where he signed the amendments on March 16, 2015. The amendment legislation was codified into law as Chapter 9 of the Laws of 2015.

To appoint representative geologists on the Licensing Board, the State Education Department, Office of the Professions reviewed the applications of several geologists during January and February. Three people were referred to the NYS Board of Regents and were approved at their March 2015 meeting. The approval by the Regents and the Governor’s signature on the Chapter Amendments were the final hurdles to geologists being added to the Licensing Board. We are pleased to announce that David A. Franzi, Ph.D., William J. Kelly, Ph.D., and Jean Neubeck, CPG-11438, were confirmed by the Regents on March 17, 2015. Now that three geologist representatives have been added to the joint Board, a committee will be formed to prepare the regulations for the State Education Department.

Largest Asteroid Impact Found in Australia Largest impact zone on Earth recently found hidden beneath the crust A paper recently published in the journal Tectonophysics, claims that the site of the largest meteorite impact has been identified in central Australia. Originally, scientists had believed that the impact zone was only the third-largest ever found. Now, after identifying another impact scar to the west of the crater, they discovered that the same mass had created both craters, doubling the impact zone to 250 miles wide. It is theorized that the meteorite split in two just before impacting the Earth. Scientists still have yet to determine the date of impact, as they cannot link it to any mass extinction events and no ash plumes associated with the event have been identified for dating.

Evaluating LNAPL Transmissivity with Various Methods at a Petroleum Remediation Site Michael Ritorto and Laura Jensen Roux Associates

What is LNAPL transmissivity?

LNAPL transmissivity, as defined by ASTM (2012), is the volume of LNAPL (L3) through a unit width (L) of aquifer per unit time (t) with units of (L2/ T). LNAPL transmissivity is, therefore, a measure of the volume of LNAPL that would be anticipated to flow into a monitoring well per unit width of a hydrogeologic unit in unit time. LNAPL transmissivity depends on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, soil type, LNAPL type, LNAPL saturation, and thickness of mobile LNAPL. LNAPL transmissivity is not an intrinsic aquifer property, but rather a summary metric based on the assessment of aquifer properties, LNAPL physical properties, and the magnitude of LNAPL saturation over a given interval of aquifer. A higher LNAPL transmissivity suggests the potential for greater LNAPL recoverability.

Traditionally, LNAPL thickness in monitoring wells has been used during development of site conceptual models at petroleum remediation sites.

However, gauged LNAPL thickness does not account for soil permeability, magnitude of LNAPL saturation above residual saturation, or physical fluid properties of LNAPL (e.g., density, interfacial tension, viscosity). As a result, use of LNAPL thickness as a measure of LNAPL mobility or recoverability can potentially result in the misinterpretation of site conditions.

Since LNAPL transmissivity is influenced by all of the key variables that can affect recoverability, it can be a better metric for predicting potential mobility and recoverability than the metric of LNAPL thickness alone.

Baildown Testing Method Baildown testing involves instantaneously displacing a measurable volume of LNAPL from a well casing in an effort to induce a hydraulic head differential between the well and the nearby aquifer formation. Following the removal of LNAPL, fluid levels are measured in an effort to evaluate recovery of fluids into the well. The drawdown and recovery data are then evaluated with analytical procedures to estimate transmissivity.

The ASTM standard for determining LNAPL transmissivity (ASTM, 2012) recommends a minimum of 0.5 feet of thickness of LNAPL in the baildown test well. The data analysis can be performed using the API LNAPL (LNAPL continued on page 72) -68-

Baildown Testing Activities Baildown tests were performed at 11 monitoring well locations where greater than one foot of LNAPL accumulations were observed. The baildown test locations were selected based on proximity to existing recovery system infrastructure so that transmissivity estimated from baildown tests could be compared to transmissivity estimated with recovery data.

LNAPL present within the monitoring well was removed using 3� polyethylene bailers, in an effort to instantaneously remove any LNAPL volume in the well casing and filter pack. A 4000 mL graduated container was used to measure the approximate volume of LNAPL removed during the monitoring well purge. Fluid levels in the monitoring wells were gauged at a minimum frequency corresponding to a change in LNAPL thickness that represents 5 % of the equilibrium gauged LNAPL thickness, in accordance with the ASTM standard. Data collected during baildown testing was evaluated using the API LNAPL Transmissivity Workbook Tool (API, 2012).

Recovery System Data Method LNAPL transmissivity can be estimated using data obtained during operation of hydraulic recovery systems that continuously remove LNAPL from the subsurface (skimming, single/dual pump, multi-phase, etc). Estimated transmissivity of LNAPL is calculated based on the theory of radial fluid flow through a porous media. The following equation provided by the ITRC (2012) and ASTM (2012) can be used to estimate LNAPL transmissivity using recovery data:

The use of recovery data requires an understanding of aquifer transmissivity in the groundwater phase and free-product characteristics such as specific gravity. Recovery System Data Evaluation LNAPL transmissivity was estimated using O&M data from 20 dual-pump liquid extraction (DPLE) recovery wells and Site-specific hydrogeologic data. The required inputs to the calculation included: •

Free-product recovery rates and groundwater extraction rates at each recovery well collected daily as part of the O&M activities; and

•

LNAPL specific gravity measured in samples of LNAPL collected from recovery and monitoring wells as part of historical investigations at the Site; and



Groundwater transmissivity estimated at a number of recovery wells based on data collected during aquifer testing activities or hydrogeologic data collected during installation of the recovery well.

Dye Tracer Testing Method LNAPL transmissivity can be estimated from a single well dye tracer analysis by measuring the rate in which a known concentration of a fluorescent tracer is dissipated from a monitoring well into the surrounding geologic formation. The rate of tracer depletion is generally proportional to the rate of LNAPL flux through the well and into the surrounding formation.

The tracer concentration is measured using a fluorescence spectrophotometer with a down-hole fiber optic cable.

Dye Tracer Testing Activities Dye tracer tests were completed at two monitoring well locations that correspond to locations where baildown tests were performed and are located near active recovery wells.

Each monitoring well location used two control samples to calibrate the fluorescence spectrophotometer. One control sample was used for the native background fluorescence (Co) from the LNAPL material and did not have any tracer introduced to the sample. The second control sample was spiked with fluorescence tracer that is near 100 percent saturation (C100) for the detector. Both control samples were capped and not subjected to the flow through migration of the surrounding geological formation. The test sample was spiked with the same initial tracer concentration as the C100 control sample at time zero of the experiment. The sample was then subject to the flow from the surrounding hydraulic formation across the screen and the decrease in concentration was monitored over time.

The wells were inspected and field parameters collected daily until the fluorescence levels returned back to normal background levels prior to the dye dilution event.

Results and Conclusions:  LNAPL transmissivity varies across the LNAPL plume and is influenced

by Site-specific factors including the hydrogeologic conditions beneath the Site, LNAPL characteristics and the ongoing recovery operations. 

LNAPL transmissivity decreased exponentially over time as DPLE recovery efforts have removed LNAPL volume from beneath the Site.



Transmissivity estimated from baildown data and recovery system operational data were generally consistent across multiple locations around the Site; however, transmissivity estimated from dye tracer tests at two locations were lower than the values estimated with the other two methods.



The dye tracer test requires accurate estimation of hydraulic gradients, which can potentially be more difficult in situations where active recovery systems are influencing hydraulic gradients around the wells (LNAPL continued on page 80) being tested.

Baildown testing is relatively easy to implement in the field and data analysis is facilitated with the use of the tools provided by the API. However, baildown testing is only applicable in LNAPL thicknesses of >0.50 feet and may require long term monitoring of fluid levels within the test well to monitor levels to background conditions.



Where available, operational data can be used to develop long term trends in LNAPL transmissivity, which may help evaluate when recovery operations are nearing hydraulic endpoints.
