Presidential Ramblings June 2016 2019 AIPG National Conference: AIPG National recently conducted a national survey of members regarding location preference for the upcoming national meetings. Of interest, you probably saw that the 2019 National AIPG Meeting – NE Section Sub-committee recommended three potential locations for our upcoming meeting: The Lower Hudson Valley, NY; Lake George, NY; and Burlington, VT. The results are not yet final, so if you haven’t voted, please do so. The polling results are not binding, but we and National have every intention to listen to the will of the people.

lated newsletter is a great way to share with the membership the work that you do. In addition, AIPG National circulates our newsletter nationally, and I am constantly amazed at the great feedback I get from other State Section EXCOM members. This is your chance to be heard!

Section Dues Increase: The NE Section continues to be one of the most active state/regional sections in AIPG. We hold two general membership meetings in the Spring and Fall, which are generally very well attended, in addition to 5 standard meetings of the EXCOM. These meetings tend to be revenue neutral, and form the backbone of our organization. Other ongoing, but discretionary expenses include donations/sponsorships to state sections hosting the AIPG National Conference, support to our student section at SUNY – Geneseo (we expect to add more student sections in 2016), support to NYSCPG, attendance at NE-GSA meeting to support scholarship outreach, and donations to the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Scholarship Fund. As a Section, we believe that beyond our mission of promoting geologic competence, integrity and ethics, that we must take the lead in supporting the future of the profession. The administration of the scholarship is our most visible endeavor, and directly impacts the lives of up to 10 geology students each year.

Since inception in 1987, the trustees of this fund have awarded over $196,000 in direct awards. While we manage a trust fund, made up entirely of donations from members and corporate sponsors, to support the scholarship fund, we as a Section try to offset the annual awards with direct contributions from Section funds.

Member dues have always been the most important and reliable source of revenue for the Section. For over 20 years, we have operated with very low annual dues ($10). In order to stay relevant, we have had to increase the award level of our scholarship over the last two decades as University tuition/fees have escalated. This has had an increasingly large impact on our annual Section budget. As such, we sought and received permission from AIPG National to increase our Section dues to $20/year. Again, we believe that helping young geologists at the inception of their geologic career is one of our most important functions, and we can’t continue to do it without your help.

To further enhance our revenues, which allow us to do this good work, our section volunteers have organized the occasional short course, conducting direct solicitation fund-raisers, and our newsletter editor and advertising manager generously give their time and effort to produce this newsletter and generate the associated advertising (Ramblings continue on Page 12) -12-

revenues from our corporate sponsors. We are hugely grateful to our sponsors, our volunteers, and our members for supporting this work in any way they can, and we trust that you will continue to support the good work of our Northeast Section by donating your time to the Section and by continuing to help fund the Section via your annual dues.

Secretary’s Report: Minutes prepared by Michael Grifasi. The January 2016 meeting minutes were reviewed and minor edits recommended. A motion was made, seconded and there was no further discussion. Meeting minutes were approved for publication in the newsletter, with the recommended edits.

Treasurer’s Report: The NE Section budget is currently in good standing. It was noted that the current balance does not reflect either the 2016 National dues or 2016 advertising income. The status of the ATMGS fund was reviewed.

The 4th quarter, 2015 downturn in the market impacted the overall value of the fund. However, an increase in the value of the fund was observed between the end of February and the beginning of March. No donations to the ATMGS were recorded in February. The 2016 proposed NE Section budget was discussed. Discussion points included the student chapter subsidy, support for attendance of GSA meeting, NYS licensure support, and the potential for future short course revenue. Dick Young noted that the NE Section could likely increase advertising revenue in 2016. A motion was made, and seconded, to approve the proposed 2016 NE Section budget. The Ex Com then voted and the motion was passed unanimously.

Correspondence:  An e-mail was received from an NE Section member pertaining to a “Google search” where the member’s name was linked to the NE Section website. Jeff Frederick revised documents linked to the Section website to assure a future name search would not link members to the Section website.  Certain ExCom members received an e-mail thought to be associated with a phishing scam. It was determined that the firm is legitimate and that the inquiry was not associated with a scam.

Old Business: Spring Meeting Update: Jessica McEachern updated the ExCom on the status of the Spring Meeting. Currently looking to identify a speaker for the presentation portion of the meeting. Bob Blauvelt indicated he has reached out to Rutgers-Newark to find a graduate student who could present their research in the context of a field trip – potentially at a quarry Downstate. Bob is expecting to hear back from Lee Slater (Meeting continued on Page 19)

(Rutgers) within a week. Jessica McEachern has contacted LIAPG with the intent of creating crossover between the two organizations.

The meeting will be held Downstate, within an hour of New York City, likely somewhere near the Palisades. It was indicated that a meeting flyer would be prepared soon.

NYS Licensure Update: Jean Neubeck provided the ExCom with a NYS licensure update. One current issue pertains to not putting NYS firms at a disadvantage to out of state firms. An attorney is being consulted regarding implementation of this law. Overall, the terms associated with the grandfathering period are acceptable. An additional update is expected to be provided for an upcoming newsletter.

Student Section Engagement – Mentoring Program: The SUNY Geneseo Student Section indicated that their members would benefit significantly from a mentoring program with professional members of the NE Section. Samantha Eckes noted that 25 student members are interested in participating in a mentoring program. Prior to the meeting, Jeff Frederick sent an e-mail looking for members interested in being mentors. The time commitment associated with mentoring is expected to be small (e-mail, phone correspondence, etc.). However, individual mentors/mentees can determine, on their own, if they would like to do more (meeting in person, job shadowing, etc.). Pairing of students to mentors will be based on the volunteer pool but would also consider similarity of focus/background. It was noted that this program should be rolled out as soon as possible. Dennis McGrath requested that those interested in participating in the program should e-mail him directly.

New Business: NE GSA Meeting Albany, NY March 21-23: Volunteers are needed to occupy the AIPG booth at the NE GSA meeting in Albany. Dennis McGrath would assist in coordinating but cannot attend the meeting.

Jeff Frederick considered potentially setting up the booth as well as running the booth on Monday, the first full day of the meeting. However, other volunteers would be needed from Tuesday on. It was noted that National would have to ship the booth and other materials prior to the Sunday mixer.

ATMGS Scholarship: Dennis McGrath highlighted the scoring process utilized in selecting awardees of the ATMGS. Numerical scores for scholarship applicants were similar from previous years suggesting that both applicant quality and need are consistent. A recommendation was made to award nine applicants slightly more than proposed in the 2016 NE Section budget. Following this recommendation, a healthy discussion pertaining to the award amount and the Section (Meeting continued on Page 21) -19-

fund ensued. A motion to adjourn the Ex Com meeting in order to convene with the ATMGS trustees was made at 5:36 pm. Following the adjournment of the ATMGS trustee meeting, the Ex Com meeting was called to order at 5:45 pm. The ExCom discussed a variety of options for funding the 2016 AGTMS. A motion was made, and seconded, to approve covering the ATMGS award costs with the amount originally budgeted for 2016 with the difference covered by the AGTMS fund checking account. The Ex Com then voted and the motion was passed unanimously.

Newsletter and Directory of Members Update: The Winter Newsletter was published prior to the meeting. Chris Proce indicated that assistance with newsletter content is needed. Curt Kramer will be working on setting up the directory of members by March 18 th and it shall continue to be sent as a pdf to members via e-mail.

Advertising Sales Update: Dick Young indicated that there are a number of new ads with some income from advertisers already received. Remaining invoices are expected to go out this week. A build-up of advertising revenue is anticipated in the coming months.

some consideration to alternative methods of funding the ATMGS. Potential fundraising avenues include applying for a one-time grant from a charitable group (e.g. Gates Foundation), more pledge drives, and creating a mechanism to allow for other organizations to give out scholarships through the NE Section. A broader discussion of this topic would take place at the Spring Meeting.

Spring Meeting Slayback Award: The NE Section will continue honoring NE Section members with the Slayback Award at the 2016 Spring Meeting. One award would be given out at the Spring Meeting, a second during the Fall Meeting. Dick Young indicated that he will coordinate timing and details of the award with Jessica McEachern. Nominations for the Slayback Award should be sent to Dick Young.

Secretary’s Report: March 2016 Minutes – the March 2016 minutes, which had been circulated electronically prior to the meeting were reviewed and a motion was made to accept the minutes as presented. The motion was seconded, discussed and the minutes were accepted by a majority vote; one member abstained from the voting due to not participating in the March meeting.

Treasurer’s Report March/April 2016 - The March and April 2016 Treasurer’s report were distributed, reviewed and discussed.

Correspondence National Meeting funding request – Jeff Frederick received a funding request from the New Mexico Section for support during the upcoming 2016 Annual meeting. After discussing the available funding options, a motion was made to provide funding in the amount of $1,500 to the New Mexico Section. The motion was seconded and discussed, and then approved by Executive Committee vote.

Old Business NYS Licensure Update: Jean Neubeck provided a brief update on the status of geologic licensure in New York State. The draft regulations (Meeting continued on Page 25) -23-

are now available for public comment and the application forms for licensure may be available by later this summer. The law takes effect on November 21, 2016, and provides a “grandfathering” period for one year until November 2017. For those who qualify under grandfathering, the ASBOG test will not be required; however, all candidates must still meet the education and experience requirements.

As part of its review of the draft regulations, the NYS Council of Professional Geologists (NYSCPG) identified a potential issue under NYS Corporation Laws that would significantly impact current “nonprofessional” entities that wish to continue to offer professional geologic services. As a result of this issue, the NYSCPG proposed a bill that was introduced in both legislative houses in May 2016 to accommodate those non-professional entities to become “professional” firms in accordance with NYS requirements. The individual entities will need to determine for themselves the most appropriate corporate structure.

The bill proposed by the NYSCPG would result in a delay in enforcing licensure for 15 months after the law takes effect to allow companies, including engineering firms, to modify their structure or name as necessary; however, the licensing and grandfathering of individuals would still continue and be in effect during that period. Jean urged members to follow legislative developments from the NYSCPG.

Student Section SUNY Genesseo Mentor Program: Dennis McGrath provided a brief summary of the current status of the Genesseo Student Chapter activities; in addition, five (5) students from SUNY Genesseo were in attendance at the Spring Meeting field trip and dinner. Dennis reported that this spring, the student chapter started a mentoring program that was designed to link students with a professional AIPG member who could provide feedback and guidance on establishing a professional career in geology and be available to answer questions.

Thirty-three (33) students from the Genesseo chapter signed up for mentoring, and Dennis was able to get commitments from twenty-four AIPG members to serve as mentors. Because the mentoring program had just been initiated, Dennis didn’t have any direct feedback on how the mentoring program was progressing, but from his own experience, he had made contact with his students via email and was anticipating additional follow-up with the students by phone.

The catalyst for the student chapter was Samantha Eckes, a senior geology student who was graduating in the Spring of 2016. Dennis had been in communication with Sam prior to her graduating and learned (Meeting continued on page 26) -25-

that the student chapter had elected/appointed a new Student President to advance the student chapter and Dennis was hoping to schedule a Fall 2016 campus visit to build upon the momentum already started with last fall’s visit and the mentoring program.

New Business Fall Elections – Nominations: Dennis McGrath is also in charge of coordinating the section officer elections and was working on the slate of potential nominations for the 2016 elections. Currently the

By Laws require that we have five (5) officers (past-president, current President, and president elect, Secretary and Treasurer) and six (6) at large members. Officers are elected for a 2-year position, and during the intervening balloting cycle, three at large positions are nominated. Dennis was planning on confirming whether the at large members who were up for re-election were willing to serve an additional turn and hoped to have a draft ballot available for consideration during the June Ex Com meeting.

AIPG Annual Meeting 2019: The Annual Meeting subcommittee had evaluated several potential meeting locations and has narrowed the recommendations down to three candidate locations, including midHudson (West Point area), Lake George, and Burlington. The strengths and basis for these potential meeting locations was summarized in a handout and further evaluated in a spirted discussion that elicited feedback from a number of members. A decision was not reached on the meeting location, and the sub-committed has been tasked with gathering additional research on the three top candidate locations prior to committing to a primary venue. Additional updates from the subcommittee are planned during upcoming Ex Com meetings, with the goal of selecting and recommending a location to National by the end of 2016.

AT Fundraising – Exploring Alternatives: A separate subcommittee has been established to evaluate potential ideas for increasing the donor participation and identifying other means of increasing the capital available in the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship. The sub-committee presented a draft memo outlining four alternatives for additional fundraising, including 1) developing support from local and regional geologic organizations, 2) seeking grants from larger charitable groups, 3) hosting fund raising events, and 4) donations from for-profit corporate sponsors. The memorandum was distributed during the meeting and the Ex Com members agreed to further evaluate the ideas presented in the memo during future meetings.

Publications Newsletter – Dick Young provided a brief summary on two important newsletter topics.

Editor Position – Chris Proce has served as the Section Newsletter Editor for over two years; the Winter Newsletter was issued in February and Chris is well on his way to getting the delayed Spring newsletter finalized and published. Dick indicated that Chris has agreed to stay on for the publication of the Spring and Indian Summer newsletters, but that he is seeking and accepting applications for a volunteer to take over Chris’s role as Newsletter Editor.

Summer - Call for Content & Schedule: To assist Chris in production, Dick asked for support in providing content for the Newsletter, including write-ups and photographs of the Spring meeting activities.

Jessica McEachern volunteered to provide a write-up of the field trip and the dinner presentation and Dick agreed to provide a write-up of the Slayback Award presentation.

Directory of Members: Curt Kramer distributed the Directory of Members by email using the National Database directory on 28 April 2016.

Curt, who was in attendance at the meeting (because he was receiving the Slayback award that evening) indicated that the production of the DOM had been delayed due to the switch in electronic database publication, which required a significant effort to remove searchable links to maintain member privacy. In addition, Curt noted that the information in the DOM is obtained directly from the National database, and emphasized that it was up to Section members to correct their personal information, and urged each member to confirm the accuracy of the information in the DOM. As part of the electronic distribution, Curt provided the steps necessary to check and where necessary update their member profile in the National database.

Advertising Sales Update & Income: Dick reports that advertising revenue from the 2016 advertising sales and renewals continues to come in on pace with prior years, and that Dick anticipates receiving additional ad revenue well into the early summer months and that he would be forwarding these funds to Bob Blauvelt for deposit into the Section fund.

American Institute of Professional Geologists Announces New Executive Director The American Institute of Professional Geologists, a service and educational organization serving the geosciences since 1963, has announced the selection of Aaron W. Johnson, PhD as its new executive director. Johnson will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of William J. Siok, CPG. The selection was made after a national search and selection process.

“We are very pleased to announce this appointment,” reported AIPG President Helen Hickman. “Dr. Johnson will bring new leadership and creativity to AIPG’s programs and a fresh perspective to AIPG’s continuing mission in support the geosciences and its practitioners.”

Dr. Johnson’s resume includes over 20 years of planning, administration, communications, fund-raising, and teaching experience in the academic sector. He was awarded a doctorate in Geological Sciences in 2003 from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his outstanding contributions to teaching and research.

“My work with non-profit organizations has allowed me to develop a management philosophy grounded in the concept that people are the most important resource in an organization.” remarks Johnson. I believe it’s imperative to “strike a balance between dedication to the mission of the organization and outlining a bold vision for the future.” Dr. Johnson will officially assume the role beginning August 22.

NYSCPG Legislative Update Thanks to the hard work of NYSCPG’s Legislative Committee, our lobbyist Peter O’Connell, and our legislative sponsors Senator Carl Marcellino and Assemblyman Steve Englebright, bill S07552 / A10251 was signed by Governor Cuomo on August 19th 2016 and is now Chapter 260 of the Laws of 2016. This is very good news for companies offering geologic services in NYS because it corrects several unintended consequences of the 2014 licensure bill. As described in the Council’s most recent newsletter: “The bill’s language will allow a general business corporation to transition to a professional corporation (PC or DPC), or alternatively, for a limited liability company (LLC) to become a professional limited liability company (“PLLC”). The proposed amendment would establish an enforcement date of March 1, 2018, for persons and companies desiring to provide professional geological services in New York to have completed their licenses and articles of incorporation. After that date, no one can legally offer geologic services without the proper credentials.”

Eastern Section, American Association of Petroleum Geologists 2016 Annual Meeting Lexington, Kentucky ES-AAPG 2016 offering professional development, networking and more in the Heart of the Bluegrass State, September 25-27, 2016 The scenic heart of Kentucky’s bourbon country will serve as the setting for the 45th annual meeting of the Eastern Section of the AAPG in Lexington, Ky., September 25-27. The Geological Society of Kentucky and the Kentucky Geological Survey are hosting a full meeting of professional development opportunities, contemporary technical session, interesting field trips, and enjoyable social events. Field trips, workshops, technical sessions Pre-meeting activities are available Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 24-25.

Workshops offered in advance of the meeting will focus on dolomite and unconventional reservoirs, as well as communicating with legislators. For those interested in staying an extra day in the Bluegrass region, a field trip to the eastern Kentucky coal field and an introductory geochemistry workshop will be available on Wednesday. Technical talks are planned for two full days of concurrent morning and afternoon sessions with poster sessions and network breaks in between. Topics range from new techniques for resource production and analysis to emerging unconventional shale plays to environmental and other issues.

Sandcastles and Horizontal Wells

by Glenn Nicholas Iosue, P.E As friends and families head out this summer to beautiful lakes and beaches, the great techniques of building sandcastles brings to mind installing Horizontal Remediation Wells. (Yes, some of us always see patterns in life.)

For example, some steps to create a sandcastle are very similar to creating horizontal wells:



Properly setup and stage out of congested areas. In the case of sandcastles, a good staging area is along the tide line, as well as away from waves and populated areas of a beach. In the case of horizontal wells, also away from congested and busy areas.



Ensure water is within close proximity. Note: Consistency of sand is important. Place some sand in a bucket of clear water.

From our well development experience, murky water indicates too much clay. Clear water indicates fine and clean sand.



Add water to the sand for an optimal mix. Like drilling mud, a little water goes a long way. With respect to sandcastles, I have found that the strongest mix is 1% water and 99% sand to allow just enough water for grains of sand to "bridge" or lock them together. Drilling mud mixtures are a bit more complicated, so we will leave that for another day, but getting the right ratio is always imperative.

Begin construction of the inner walls of your sandcastle. Over time, and similar to installing horizontal wells over the last 24 years (and as with most things in life), your technique will improve and evolve.

This year the 53rd meeting of the American Institute of Professional Geologists National Conference is being held in the beautiful and historic city of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Set aside September 10th to the 13th to attend this years’ conference, “New Mexico: Land of Geologic Confluences and Cultural Crossroads”. The New Mexico section is co-hosting the event and we are delighted to host and show off our enchanting land. It’s an exciting time for geologists as we are continuously challenged to work with economic resources and environmental responsibilities inherent to our profession. As always, our national conferences provide opportunities to learn from knowledgeable speakers and one another’s experiences. Our planning committee has been working to organize several field trips and tours. The geologically dynamic landscapes of northern and central New Mexico include the unique rift valley of the Rio Grande, stretching from southern Colorado to Chihuahua, Mexico. The confluence of three geologic provinces, the Colorado Plateau, the Basin and Range and the Southern Rocky Mountains has left wonderful landscapes and exciting geology. The rift has provided its inhabitants a north-south route following a bountiful river for several thousand years. Abundant resources are found here and ancient cultures established homelands that continue to thrive today. Nineteen Pueblos are located in New Mexico and sixteen are directly associated with the Rio Grande. These Native people still maintain cultural and religious ties to the river, land and air. Field trips include the Valles Caldera, Ghost Ranch, Taos Pueblo, Sandia Crest, and several other tours that will be available for you to experience these unique and rich crossroads.

The 2-km-diameter Valles caldera (1.25 Ma) is the world’s type resurgent caldera and erupted roughly 400 km3 of the famous Tshirege Member, Bandelier Tuff, radial outflow sheets of high-silica rhyolite ignimbrite. pants can view the tuff lapping into the Rio Grande rift. Then a short stop at the Los Alamos Science Museum where you can view detailed replicas of Fat Man, Little Boy and other LAB projects. After this, we’ll stop at the youngest intracaldera eruption, the Banco Bonito rhyolite lava (about 70 ka). And finally, we’ll examine the hot springs at Soda Dam, whose soothing waters are derived from the 300°C geothermal system within the caldera. Bring your camera, hat, sunglasses light sweater or jacket, sunscreen, and easy shoes.

Sandia Crest Date: Sunday, September 11, 2016 Time: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Cost: $115 Early/$135 Regular (Includes box lunch, snacks, water, transportation & tramway ticket) Leader: Adam Read and Bruce Allen Our bus will travel south on I-25 to the Sandia Peak Tramway in Albuquerque and will provide views of several interesting structures and subbasins of the Rio Grande rift along the way. We will ride the tramway 4000 feet up to the crest of Sandia Peak at 10,200 feet above sea level. From the tramway station, we will take a moderate hike of about 1.5 miles, with spectacular views along the crest. Along the way, we will discuss the evolution of the Rio Grande rift, accommodation zones, rift flank uplifts, and whatever else we see of interest. At the end of our hike, we will reach a parking area where we can re-board our bus and drive down the dip-slope of the Sandias. Along the way we will stop to view a fine exposure of the Great Unconformity. Then we will continue back to Santa Fe along the Turquoise Trail (NM-14) through the old mining towns of Madrid and Cerrillos. Bring good shoes for hiking, a small pack, sunglasses, a hat, and a camera. The hiking on this trip will be moderate and on a good trail, but this trip is at a high elevation. This can pose significant problems for some people, especially if they are coming from near sea-level.

Geology of the Galisteo Basin, New Mexico Date: Sunday, September 11, 2016 Time: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Cost: $115 Early/$135 Regular (Includes box lunch, snacks, water & transportation) Leader: Alvis L. Lisenbee, MEM-1747 and Bruce Black This field trip will examine Cretaceous and Paleogene strata involved in the complex relationship of Laramide and Rio Grande rift evolution in the Galisteo topographic basin south of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Within the area, at least two periods of Laramide tectonism (uplift and basin formation) are recognized. Rio Grande rift development reactivated the NE-trending TijerasCaĂąoncito fault system, which extends from Albuquerque to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. This structural zone separates the northerly plunging Estancia basin on the south from the Santa Fe embayment of the Espanola basin to the north (both related to the rift). Within the Santa Fe embayment deformed strata as young as the Oligocene Espinaso Volcanics are domed along the east flank of the Cerrillos igneous center. Cretaceous/Jurassic sandstone adjacent to the Tijeras- CaĂąoncito fault zone contains the only oil produced within the Rio Grande rift.

Exploring Basin–Fill Stratigraphy and Paleodrainage Date: Tuesday, September 13, 2016 Time: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Cost: $115 Early/$135 Regular (Includes box lunch, snacks, water, transportation) Leader: Dan Koning Excellent exposures of well dated basin fill of the synrift Santa Fe Group in northern New Mexico provide an ideal field laboratory to explore the influences of basin structure (i.e., half-graben asymmetry) and climate on the stratigraphic architecture of half-graben basins. This visits three sites in the northern Espaùola Basin, located only 20 miles north of Santa Fe. These sites illustrate how fluvial systems changed, in a paleogeographic and sedimentologic sense, between 18 and 8 Ma due to changes in tectonic tilting, paleoclimatic, and rift volcanism. We discuss how these fluvial changes impacted the stratigraphic and hydrogeologic architecture of the basin. In addition, we observe the fault zone architecture of an intra-basinal normal fault and discuss how these faults might influence groundwater flow.

The Pecos-Picuris Fault in Deer Creek Canyon Date: Tuesday, September 13, 2016 Time: 8:00 am to 2:00 pm Cost: $115 Early/$135 Regular (Includes box lunch, snacks, water, transportation and cost of the museum) Leader: Steve Cather and Adam Read This trip will be an easy to moderate hike up Deer Creek to view fault rocks along the Pecos-Picuris fault. This fault is the largest strike-slip fault in the southern Rocky Mountains and has 37km of right-lateral separation along it, the result of several slip events. It cuts Proterozoic granite gneiss that is spectacularly brecciated in Deer Creek Canyon. The damage zone is unusually wide and is very well exposed. There are also many enigmatic outcrops that will certainly provoke discussion. Cottonwoods in the canyon should have great fall colors this time of year. Bring good shoes for hiking, a small pack, sunglasses, a hat, and a camera. The hiking on this trip will be easy to moderate and on a good trail that is fairly flat most of the way.

However, the Santa Fe area is at a high elevation (7500 feet) which can pose significant problems for some people, especially if they are coming from near sea-level. Excellent exposures

To overcome the challenging site access restrictions, horizontal sampling techniques were used. This included sampling 6 locations with horizontal drilling technology to complete subsurface investigation activities.

The horizontal sampler is mechanically opened and locked into position upon reaching the designated vertical and horizontal target depth. Samples volumes are sufficient to meet analytical laboratory testing requirements.

Main advantages of horizontal soil sampling include:

1. Horizontal sampling tool gives precise, repeatable samples over relatively large areas without disrupting building occupants or facility operations.

In 1996, our first horizontal sampling project was the successful collection of 8 soil samples beneath sensitive infrastructure. Since then, over the last 20 years, Directional Technologies has used horizontal soil sampling technology in a wide variety of soils.

2. Sampling is possible even under dense foliage or wetlands, avoiding damage to sensitive habitats.

National AIPG Executive Committee Meeting in Denver, Colorado The most recent National AIPG Executive Committee meeting was held in Thornton, Colorado (outside Denver) in June. The meetings lasted all day Saturday and the agenda was packed, including introducing our new Director, Dr. Aaron W. Johnson. Those of us who arrived early enough on Friday were treated to a “Rockies” baseball game. The sunset over the real Rockies as a backdrop was beautiful but alas, the team lost to the Diamondbacks and there was “no joy in Mudville.”

FIELD TRIP (Free to All) The Geology of Garvies Point Preserve This program will provide insight to the unique geologic features contained within the Preserve. A hands-on discussion of concretions and nodules, Cretaceous and Pleistocene sediments, weathering and erosion are included. Weather permitting, there will be a short field trip to the beach, and a slide presentation and exhibit interpretation.

The preserve offers a place to observe a number of geologic features which, while typical of Long Island, are not found together in such a limited area elsewhere on the island. The most striking glacial evidence is the assortment of large boulders which were deposited within the thin deposit of till. The boulders emphasize the variety of rocks that were plucked from geologically diverse areas north of Long Island. A few of the boulders bear the scars of their journey, including "glacial polish" and "glacial striations.” It is only at a few spots on Long Island such as Garvies Point, that a pre-glacial hill of Cretaceous sediments is exposed above sea level. The geologic processes and features that are to be explored include iron oxide concretions, fossils, lignite and pyrite, and erosion.

Garvies Point Museum and Preserve The NE-AIPG Fall Meeting is on Wednesday, October 19.

The meeting event features an evening presentation on applying for licensure as a P.G. in New York State (read the Save-the-Date notice on page 59 As usual, we also have an interesting afternoon Field Trip planned to Garvies Point for all who can join us. Garvies Point Museum and Preserve (in Glen Cove, north shore of Long Island) is a center for research on Long Island geology where collections of original archaeological artifacts and geological phenomena are maintained. These items are used in exhibits and Museum educational programs and are available for special research purposes.

The geologic event that most greatly affected the land surface of Long Island was the advance of a massive continental glacier into this region during the Wisconsin stage of the Pleistocene Epoch. The Ronkonkoma and the later Harbor Hill are two substages of this ice sheet. The accumulation of rock debris along these two stationary melting fronts formed two prominent ridges of terminal moraines. The ice retreated from the Ronkonkoma to the Harbor Hill position where the ice moved south, overriding and destroying the Ronkonkoma terminal moraine. Thus, only the Harbor Hill moraine remains to mark the position of the stationary ice front west of Lake Success. The highest points on Long Island are found along the terminal moraines.

Purdy’s Treasure Map: Brooklyn College Geology Society and their Quest for Ooids

Earth and Environmental Sciences Undergraduate Recipient of the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Scholarship When I returned to school as an older student two and a half years ago, I never expected to find a love and passion for geology. Originally, I was an intended business major until I took a science requirement core class, or “Rocks for Jocks” course. Every fact I learned, I wanted to know more. Since declaring my major for a bachelor’s of science in Earth and Environmental Science from City University of New York- Brooklyn College, I have done more than I ever expected. I have seen traces of the rock record throughout New York and New Jersey and attended my first GSA conference in Baltimore. More intensely, and just in the last spring semester, I spent two weeks in Death Valley for a field mapping course and a long, weekend in the Bahamas.

Normally when one hears “The Bahamas,” an image of a cold, fruity drink next to pristine, blue waters appears in their head. As a member of the Brooklyn College Geology Society, I initially had that image when the idea arose to take a club trip to the Caribbean islands. The journey was proposed to take place in May just before finals week. In order to make it eligible for the school to even consider assisting financially, it needed to be taken during the school year.

This makes things a bit tricky considering the amount of paperwork, interviews and necessary planning incorporated in such a trip, especially an international one that incorporates the term “liability”. Going to the Bahamas would require a student contribution and the possibility of risking final grades by jeopardizing precious study time. I was very hesitant to commit to the trip, especially as it was unlikely to be officially approved until the week before. It wasn’t until our club president at the time, Anastasia Danilova, said, “Nicole, don’t you want to see the ooids.” Given courses I had already taken in sedimentology and stratigraphy, I knew what ooids were. I had seen them in the Cambrian rock record we mapped in Death Valley. I also knew they did not weather nicely, making them exceptionally jagged and painful to fall on.

These small, calcium carbonate grains are discussed in detail in Edward G. Purdy’s 1963 paper, Recent Calcium Carbonate Facies of the Great Bahama Bank. 2. Sedimentary Facies. This was also known as our treasure map and inspiration for our quest to the Bahamas. According to the paper, ooids are common offshore in the shoal environment at Joulters Cay, North Andros Island, Bahamas (Fig. 1 & 2, next page). For ooids to form, it must be a carbonate ramp environment with enough continuous wave energy for grains to roll in precipitated calcium carbonate to become coated, creating an ooid.

nection to a small propeller plane (Fig. 3) and a short, half hour flight we landed on Andros Island. The airport was just as you would see in the movies: one room, small snack window, maybe twenty seats, palm trees around, painted yellow, and a lack of security lines.

We travelled forty-five minutes from the airport on pothole ridden roads to our home for the weekend, Love at First Sight Hotel & Restaurant. The quant, pink oasis was run by a woman named, Sheila, who has claim to being the best cook on Andros Island, and her husband, ‘The Captain’ (a nickname from a past customer), who assists in the repairs and any tasks she assigns him. With nothing planned for the evening and afternoon upon arrival, we asked where the grocery store was to obtain provisions for the weekend. originally anticipated. Grocery stores were nothing more than an unfortunate New York bodega. They lacked in fresh fruits and vegetables, but somehow had every cake ingredient you could ever need. The island import of food became apparent when buying two bags of grapes would cost $17. To make matters more interesting, our group of pale college kids from Brooklyn quickly realized finding sunscreen on Andros Island was like finding a geologist whose jokes didn’t contain gneiss or schist. Therefore, inevitable sunburns and peanut butter bagels became the theme of the weekend, all in the name of geology!

Our first stop was the Small Hope Bay Lodge to experience a modern reef environment (Fig. 4).

We met up with our instructor, Federico, and his dog, Sassy, who took us out for snorkelling. It was incredible seeing a reef system interact with the water around it. I personally followed a stingray past a giant sea star. We went to what Federico called, “The Garden,” where Small Hope Bay Lodge was working to restore the reefs. This restoration process involved using epoxy to cement young reef plants from their farm to existing reefs. It was inspiring to see the efforts to maintain the reefs amongst the continuous threat of climate change and pollution.

After our snorkel, we asked about the famous blue hole we had heard about. Forty minutes and a questionable road later ,we ended up at the inland blue hole. After snorkeling in the beautiful sea water, swimming on the top layer of freshwater made us feel like heavy and terrible swimmers (Fig. 5). to think of what may lie beneath us in the layers of the fresh, brackish, and saltwater.

Our quest to find ooids was a bit more of an adventure. To maintain our shoestring budget, we hired two local fisherman, Elias and Skimmer, who looked at the map in the Purdy paper and knew where to take us. I rode with

Skimmer, on his wonderfully named boat, ‘The Skinny Dipper’ (Fig. 6). At one point, he stopped the boat in the shallows to catch a barracuda (Fig. 7). After he caught it, I asked what he planned to do with it. He said, “I’m going to season it and put it on the grill and eat it.” I found this interesting, considering the risks associated with eating barracuda. As a native, I’m sure he just has a tolerance of

some sort.

ed, vegetated islands of the shoal, next to a tidal channel. At last, this was what we had travelled all this way for: ooids (Fig. 8 & 9). There they were right under our feet! The spherical nature of the ooids made them behave differently than siliciclastic sands. They were difficult to walk on but had a soft, pleasant texture. A unique experiment demonstrated their behavior. When a small trench was dug the ooids gracefully rolled into the trench, rather than clump down from the walls like siliciclastic sand. It was a magical, day rolling around in the ooids, taking samples, and observing every type of ripple mark possible (Fig. 10-14). We used our snorkel masks to watch the wave energy interact with the ooids and create these ripples.

The small details we observed on Andros Island gave light to the big picture we observed in Death Valley and had studied in the class room. It continues to support the Charles Lyell phrase we all learned in geology 101, “The present is the key to the past.� A big idea and a little luck made it possible for a group of urban, Brooklyn College students to see these unique features in the making. Adventures like these, that make it possible for us to gain a better understanding of what we study, give us the opportunity to take it with us, as we journey forth into our lives.
