Presidential Ramblings Jeff Frederick, CPG Spring has finally arrived; time for the AIPG Spring Meeting!

If you missed the meeting, Jean Neubeck has written a summary of the proceedings included in this newsletter.

There are a number of ways to get involved in the professional community and build network relationships with other practicing geologists/geoscientists. What follows are not endorsements; consider these some interesting ideas to branch out of your normal circles and to make connections with your fellow practitioners.

problems and issues facing practicing geologists across the full spectrum of sub-disciplines. The hydrogeology forum (of which I am a member) routinely has lively debates and discussions ranging from relatively straightforward pumping test solutions to more complicated issues such as fractured rock remediation and innovative new investigative technologies.

Updates to these discussion threads are frequent; I would suggest pointing these to a private email address to avoid the inbox clutter you likely deal with daily.

Another interesting group you can find at LinkedIn is the AIPG! They have forums for both members and executive committees. These forums are excellent, and will provide you with a wide variety of discussions and problems faced by practicing members of our on-line community. Even if you decide to not contribute at first, merely “lurking” can provide you with an interesting perspective or a glimpse at a lively debate.

In addition to the discussion forums, I have been very surprised to find a wide variety of high-quality job offerings presented through these groups. I suppose it makes much more sense to target your candidate search to folks who are active in the community. So, if you are currently looking for a new opportunity, this is one more reason to consider joining.

Report: More Geo-Science Job Opportunities Than Students American Geosciences Institute released their newest Status of the Geoscience Workforce Report, dated May 2014, which shows that formal training and education in the geosciences continues to be a hot commodity in the job market. Projected shortfalls in the current decade exceed 100k positions, this despite recent increases in graduation rates for the geosciences.

In addition to basic needs for educated geoscientists, the opportunities for on-the-job training and mentoring are fading quickly. As seen in the graphic below (US government employment of Geologists), we face a rather large loss of institutional knowledge as the baby-boom generation of geologists transition from full time work and into their golden years.

The peak (demographically speaking) of the cohort will reach retirement age in just 10 years, and many organizations still struggle with transition or succession planning.

Old Business Annual Meeting Update: Jeff read from Bob Stewart’s report on the 2013 Annual Meeting. Bob participated in the field trip to the Henderson Molybdenum Mine – an underground operation that Bob found fascinating. A new slate of Advisory Board members was elected including two Young Professional members and Dave Pyles from the IL/IN Section.

Annual Meeting will be held in Prescott, AZ; the 2015 Annual Meeting in Anchorage, AK. National is looking for a host for the 2016 Annual Meeting – National will assist with logistics, however, volunteers will be needed for the field trips and technical program.

The Georgia Section (as well as other Sections) has had a lot of success recently by hosting career day events for students.

These events feature speakers and demonstrations of field techniques. Perhaps the NE Section could build on our success with short courses by getting students directly involved.

positions on the ExCom. Laurie Scheuing, Chris Proce, and Jessica McEachern were all elected for a two-year term starting in January 2014. National distributed the electronic ballot on November 19th.

A total of 91 ballots were cast before the balloting was closed on December 9th. The majority (85%) of members voted in the first two days.

The recent voting did not resolve the vacancy for President Elect. The Ex Com acknowledged the need to find several candidates to fill this open officer position.

New Business  Ex Com Meeting Dates: The proposed Executive Committee meeting schedule was established and includes the following dates: January 13, 2014; March 3, 2014; Spring Meeting – May 15, 2014; July 7, 2014; September 8, 2014 Fall Meeting – Tentatively October 15, 2014; December 8, 2014.

2014 Spring Meeting: Venues for the Spring meeting were discussed, but most of the discussion focused on holding a joint meeting with the Long Island Association of Professional Geologists (LIAPG). Jessica McEachern suggested the David Weld Preserve in Nissequogue, NY. Jessica will contact Gil Hanson about his leading the field trip. A joint meeting with LIAPG could enhance the meeting (Minutes continued on page 26)

Angelo Tagliacozzo Scholarship: Dennis McGrath announced that a record number of 24 students submitted applications this year for the Angelo Tagliacozzo Scholarship. The applicants originated from a total of 17 different colleges and universities in five states NY, CT, MA, RI and ME. The application packages will be distributed soon to the Scholarship Committee members and evaluations will begin. The goal will be to present award recommendations to the ExCom at the March 2014 meeting. Bob Blauvelt is serving as the floating committee member this year. 

Publication Schedule: Directory of Members: Due to family commitments involving the care of his parents, Curt Kramer was slightly behind schedule in complet= ing the DOM. 2014 Advertising Solicitations: Dick Young noted that he has held off sending out requests for 2014 advertising renewals until we have confirmed that there is a fulltime Editor for the Newsletter who is committed to publishing five (5) publications next year; four Newsletters and the Directory of Members.



The proposed budget was discussed and a few minor revisions made; a motion was made to accept the 2014 budget as guidance for future use. The motion was seconded and following a brief discussion, the 2014 budget was accepted as a guidance document by an Ex Com. There is a call for AIPG Abstracts for Shale/Fracking topics, which are due February 17, 2014.



New Business Angelo Scholarship – 2013-2014 Announcement: Dennis McGrath was unable to attend due to illness, but it was noted that there were a number of excellent Angelo Tagliacozzo Geologic Memorial Trust Fund (ATGMTF) scholarship applications received and the committee is in the process of reviewing the submissions. the March Ex Com meeting 2014 Spring Meeting: The venue for the Spring meeting at the David Weld Sanctuary was confirmed by Jessica McEachern. Gil Hanson also was confirmed to act as the field trip leader at the meeting. Jean Neubeck is in the process of trying to coordinate with the Long Island Association of Professional Geologists to make this a joint meeting. Further efforts will be made to coordinate with LIAPG and finalize logistics for the meeting.

Publication Schedule: Newsletter and Directory of Members: Dick Young spoke briefly on the current publication schedule for the Newsletter and Directory of Members. According to Dick, the Newsletter is currently behind by two issues (Indian Summer and Year End Newsletters have not been published); however, both Dick and Mike Greenman were diligently working to get the overdue Newsletter editions published shortly and get back on schedule for the Spring Newsletter in 2014.

According to Dick, Curt Kramer had hoped to have the Directory of Members completed and finalized by the end of the year, but was behind schedule.

2013 Advertising Revenue Status: Dick Young reports that advertising revenue for the 2013 Newsletter publication has continued to come in and has been consistent with revenue that was received to date for previous years; there has been little change in advertising revenues since he last reported to the Ex Com in December.

2014 Advertising Solicitations: Dick Young noted that advertising revenue is starting to come in for 2014 and it is anticipated that it will be consistent with 2013.

Planned Short Courses: Bob Blauvelt reported that the Spring short course was being scheduled and finalized with Rutgers. The course is set for eight hours and will be held on campus in Robeson Hall. The short course will include a lecture and interactive component using GIS freeware, utilizing Google Maps and the integration of laboratory data. There will be no charge for the venue and free parking to attendees. AIPG NE and Rutgers will split the catering and advertising costs. It is expected that there will also be a short course in the fall with the USGS at the Naval Warfare Center. Bob will work with Dick Young to line up sponsors for the short course.

NYSCPG Licensure Update: The NYSCPG continues to pursue the professional licensure of geologists by New York State and there continues to be high hopes for the proposed bill to be passed in 2014.



NYSCPG Update You may have all heard the exciting news that the bill to establish the Profession of Geology in New York State has passed both houses of the Legislature. As exciting as this news is, I would like to stress that our work is not done. We still need the governor to sign the bill once it reaches his desk. We will to take an active approach and begin communications with his office soon. Please refer to the June 2014 NYSCPG newsletter for further information regarding the work that went into the bill’s passage this year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the members of NEAIPG who have been supportive of this effort for many years. This has been a collaborative effort that is the result of work done over many years. It would not have been possible without the financial support of groups like NEAIPG. These contributions have helped cover the substantial costs for the necessary lobbying efforts over the years.

There is still a substantial amount of work that will be required over the next several years. Once the bill becomes law, we enter the regulation creation period. The State Education Department has asked for two years to craft the regulations. We want to be part of the regulation writing process through our lobbyist, Peter O’Connell. We are hoping to shorten the time it takes to prepare the regulations and we would like to propose a pre-qualification period to State Ed. The reason for this period is to help business owners transition their companies into professional corporations. Every business within New York State owned by geologists and/or offering geologic services will be required to become professional corporations. We are hoping that through a potential pre-qualification period that we can make this a smooth transition.

DUNE DU PYLA

BY MIKE GREENMAN, CPG—10442 On a recent trip to France, I had had the good fortune to visit a truly interesting geologic site, The Dune du Pyla. The dune is the largest sand dune in Europe and site on the Atlantic coast of France approximately 37 miles southwest of Bordeaux, near the coastal town of Arcachon.

The dune is around 1,650 feet wide, 400 feet high and 1.7 miles long. It contains nearly 78, million cubic yards of sand. The dune is considered a foredune that runs parallel to a shoreline. The dune has been observed to move landward, slowly pushing the forest back and covering houses, roads, and portions of the Atlantic Wall (WW II coastal defenses.)

The sand in the dune is being fed by a sand bank to the west that is exposed during low tide. At low tide, the surface of the sandbank begins to dry, allowing the westerly winds to blow it to shore. When it reaches land, the sand begins to build into a mound, and as the wind continues to force more grains up the windward side, they fall over the crest of the dune. Gradually, the landward face of the dune becomes steeper and steeper until it reaches an angle of 35 degrees, the point at which it becomes unstable and avalanches down the slope. The dune is migrating easterly at an average rate of 16 feet a year. Yearly rates vary from 3 feet to 33 feet. As the dune moves relentlessly east it continues to cover forests, house, and roads. As an example, a Bordeaux family built a house in 1928. Within two years the house began to be invaded by sand, and by 1936, the house was completely obliterated.

View looking southwest The dune has become a favorite tourist destination. The climb to the top of the dune is facilitated by a staircase. The trip down is usually accomplished by running down the steep eastern face. Our group was the first to arrive on day of our visit. Upon arrival at the top, no evidence remained of the previous day’s visitors. The constant winds constantly obliterate any trace of human impact. The view from the top is spectacular. To the west lies the bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The other three sides contain pine forests.

Parasailing is a major sport among the many visitors due to the constant winds. Peak winds have been measured at 109 miles per hour in January 2009.

Future Fossils: Plastic Stone

Plastic first became widespread in the mid-20th century.

Since then, about six billion tons have been manufactured.

Much of that has ended up as trash, and nobody knows what will become of it.

Now researchers have discovered an unexpected way that some plastic waste is persisting: as a new type of stone.

The substance, called plastiglomerate, is a fusion of natural and manufactured materials. Melted plastic binds together sand, shells, pebbles, basalt, coral and wood, or seeps into the cavities of larger rocks to form a rock-plastic hybrid. day, will probably be long-lived and could even become permanent markers in the planet’s geologic record.

“Most conventional plastic is relatively thin and fragments quickly,” said Richard Thompson, a marine biologist at Plymouth University in England, who was not involved in the research. “But what’s being described here is something that’s going to be even more resistant to the aging process.”

Plastiglomerate was discovered in 2006 by Charles Moore, a sea captain and oceanographer at the Algalita Marine Research Institute in Long Beach, Calif. Mr. Moore was surveying plastic washed up on Kamilo Beach, a remote, polluted stretch of sand on Hawaii’s Big Island.

Like other southeastern shorelines in the Hawaiian archipelago, Kamilo Beach accumulates garbage because of how currents circulate. Spotting the odd plastic-covered rock assemblages, Mr. Moore took a few photographs and collected some specimens.

The significance of that discovery was not realized until 2012, when Patricia Corcoran, an earth scientist at Western University in Ontario, invited Mr. Moore to give a lecture about plastic pollution. He included the plastic conglomerates in one of his slides, although he had no name for them. Intrigued, Dr. Corcoran decided to fly to Hawaii to see the strange anthropogenic stones for herself.

At Kamilo Beach, she and a colleague sampled 21 sites on a 2,300-foot strip. They collected all plastic-rock specimens with a diameter of about an inch or more.

nets, ropes and lids appeared in some stones. They collected 205 pieces, ranging from the size of a peach pit to the diameter of a large pizza.

At first, Mr. Moore hypothesized that lava from the nearby Kilauea volcano created the plastiglomerates, but flows have not approached the beach for at least a century. Interviews with local residents revealed a more likely explanation: bonfires.

Kamilo Beach’s sand is laced with degraded pollutant particles called “plastic confetti.” This makes it virtually impossible to find a bonfire spot free of plastic waste, Dr. Corcoran said.

She also heard that some locals intentionally burned plastic in an effort to get rid of it.

Kamilo Beach’s plastiglomerates are probably not unique.

Plastic is found around the world, as are bonfires. And in some developing countries, people regularly burn garbage to dispose of it.

“I’m sure people have seen plastiglomerates in other places and just haven’t reported them or given them a name,” Dr. Corcoran said.

Because scientists define rocks as things formed by natural processes, she prefers to label the new materials as stones.

This distinction does not affect plastiglomerates’ longevity, however.

Many scientists believe the planet has entered a new geological era, the Anthropocene, in which human activity is leaving a vast and durable imprint on the natural world. Along with (In the News continued on page 65) -63-

building materials, tools and atmospheric signatures, plastiglomerates could be future markers of humanity’s time on earth.

“Plastics and plastiglomerates might well survive as future fossils,” said Jan Zalasiewicz, a geologist at the University of Leicester in England, who was not involved in the discovery.

“If they are buried within the strata, I don’t see why they can’t persist in some form for millions of years.”

In his first Presidential Ramblings, President Dimmick reiterated the need for greater participation by our members. This was an important issue since the secion was looking into hosting the National Meeting in 1991 or 1992. He stated that 25 volunteers would be required to help at the meeting in various functions.

The Spring meeting was to be held at Dinosaur State Park in Connecticut in May. The feature article was submitted by Hans Schreiber and was titled, “Financing Geologically Worthy Gold Deposits - the Oftentimes Neglected Considerations and Ignored Aspects”.

A copy of a letter from Sam Evans President of the AIPG to the State of New Jersey regarding the role of geologists in subsurface explorations especially in regards to NJDEP UST regulations. The letter clarified the role of the geologist versus that of the engineer and the need for the proper professional in hydrogeologic investigations. At the time many engineers were entering these investigations due to the lack of licensure by geologists in some states. The letter also stressed the role of the AIPG in setting standards for licensure that the states can use as they move towards it.

LET’S HIKE AND BIKE THE GREAT ALLEGHENY PASSAGE

Although not technically within the boundaries of our Northeast Section, The Great Allegheny Passage running from McKeesport, Pennsylvania to Cumberland, Maryland, is close enough to be enjoyed by most of our members.

The trail, which is 150 miles long, follows the route of the abandoned Pittsburgh, McKeesport and Youghiogheny Railroad. At its eastern end in Cumberland, Maryland it connects to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park towpath which continues another 184 miles to Washington DC. At its western end the trail will eventually continue on into Pittsburgh as a last section of the trail is completed.

cently seen. Walking the trail is also popular. Most of the people riding the trail were out for a leisurely day in the open air, however, several individuals and groups were laden with saddlebags and were riding the full length of the trail. Since this a former railroad right-of-way, grades are gently and are easily handled by the casual biker. The trail is wide enough to allow easy traffic in both directions. It was observed that even in the more crowded parts of the trail, people were courteous and stayed to the right. Parking is available at many areas along the way. Most of the parking areas have toilets available and additional toilets may be found along the way. In addition rest areas with picnic tables can be found as well as benches, especially at scenic spots along the river.

There is ample geology to admire, since the trail travels through the sedimentary coal bearing formations of western Pennsylvania. The trail crosses the eastern continental divide, at about 3000 feet, before reaching its terminus in Cumberland Maryland. Numerous bed and breakfasts, cafes, and bike shops can be found in the towns along the way.

This is one of the many rail-trails that have been built in the last several years that have spurred a small booming economy along their paths. I spoke to one owner of a small ice cream shop in the town of Boston, who said that her business expanded to a deli across the street, a bicycle shop and a small inn.

The trail starts off along the banks of the Youghiogheny River for the first 68 miles through lush green hillsides and former booming industrial towns. Along the way it passes through the town of Ohiopyle. At this point the river is known for its rapids and it is the local white water rafting center for the area. At the town of Confluence the trail turns off and follows the Casselman River for 31 miles and passes through the 849 foot long Pinkerton Tunnel. From here the trail goes uphill toward the continental divide, and follows the route of the

route of the old Western Maryland Railroad, passing through another tunnel and proceeding downhill into Cumberland Maryland.

Thacher State Park is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliffface, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the HudsonMohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains.

Much of the geology of the park can be seen along the Indian Ladder Trail, a picture of which is on the opposing page. Various formations of Devonian limestones can be seen as one descends the stairs along the trail. The trail passes behind some tall waterfalls as it winds along the cliff face.

The preceding diagram is from Berkey 1948. For those working in the New York City - Northern New Jersey, this profile is a must to understanding the geology of the lower Hudson Valley. In addition its mirror image can be seen in Connecticut in the New Haven area, as the eroded arch of Triassic red beds and igneous rocks come down and dip to the east. This profile was essential part of our geologic education in our introductory geology course.

This diagram was also used to show the local geology, but also to demonstrate the various types of structures and stratigraphic relationships.

Some of the basic concepts were the huge unconformity between the extremely folded Precambrian/Cambo-ordivician New York City sequence and the tilted Triassic beds that lie above. What happened to all the intervening material?

What sequence of events transpired to give this cross section? When did the New York City folding occur? When were the Palisades intruded? What is the history of the Hudson estuary?

The amount of information garnered from this one diagram was immense. The concepts of metamorphism, folding, tilting, erosion, intrusion, superposition of rivers, glaciation, and deposition were all included along with follow up questions, such as the origin of red beds and shales in the Newark sequence.

The diagram is just as relevant now as it was 66 years ago when published by Berkey.
