Presidential Ramblings Jeff Frederick, CPG Winter is here, and the warm waters of this past summer are a long memory. Two newsletters ago, I mentioned that I was heading to the J24 World Championships in Newport, RI to compete on the world stage for the second time in my competitive sailing career. In the months that followed, I forgot to provide an update and to report on our results. Not remotely geological in any way… a true “ramblings”.

The J24 World Championships were hosted by Sail Newport, pitting 70 teams from 13 nations (Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay and the United States) against one another for the #1 (Ramblings continued on page 12)

spot in the world. The regatta consists of 10 races over 5 days; those who’ve done it would consider it an endurance event.

September 20, our crew arrives in Newport, the owner and boat having arrived the day before for measurement. Class racing means that all of the boats are functionally identical, with fairly tight limits on the size and weight of every major component of the boat and rig, including the crew and the hull itself. Chord measurements on the keel and rudder, sails are inspected, measured, and certified. A long and boring day for the owner of the boat (an engineer… so this stuff is right up his alley).

Today is rigging and preparation day. The boat only takes a few hours to rig, but because of the nature of sailboat racing and the importance of the event… every shackle gets double checked, line inspected, fitting eyeballed. Plus, the bottom gets washed, rewashed, polished, waxed, and waxed again. Eight hours later… the boat is ready for launch.

We make our way down to the cranes and quickly haul and launch into the harbor. From here, we motor into the marina and take our assigned spot amongst the 79 other competitors in a fairly packed transient marina. Space is limited, and we pack in three boats deep along finger piers, rafting the boats in a chaotic, but seemingly well-choreographed, dance.

Sunday is a practice day. The fleet heads out into the ocean for a series of practice starts (a starting line with 70 boats can get pretty tight, coupled with the competitive nature of these events, can lead to, well, let’s just say I have seen my share of shattered fiberglass on the starting line. So, practice starts are a great way to get associated with the conditions and the fleet.

The last start is followed by a short practice race, giving the crews a chance to change sails and get into a rhythm. A good day.

Race Day 1: Teams battled blustery conditions on the ocean course, with five-leg races and 1.5 mile opening beats. Winds were averaging 14-16 knot breezes of the initial contest, which also saw 3-5 feet waves and southwesterly swells in the 10-15 (Ramblings continued on page 16) -15-

foot range. It is hard to overstate how lumpy this is in a light and fast 24 foot racing boat. Entire boats (including the tips of their masts) would disappear from view between the swells, and those of us working on the deck were quickly soaked to the skin… even the best rain gear cannot keep the rushing green water out! We raced well, kept the mistakes to a minimum, and placed in the middle of the pack (39th). Racing at this level is all about consistency and NOT making mistakes… the entire fleet is very good at what we do, and even the smallest mistakes differentiate the boats very quickly.

Winds dropped slightly to 12-14 knots in Monday’s second battle, which suited us… we got a better feel for the sea state. In race #2, we were able to fly our sails a little more efficiently,

had gotten used to the lumpy seas, and we finished 18th. Improving through the day, avoiding a catastrophic outcome due to a ripped sail, it was a good day. We were covered with bruises, bloody, but pleased with our showing and 26th in the fleet overall.

Race Day 2: The fleet begins to get more competitive; if you can imagine 70 world class boats already filled with type-A hypercompetitive skippers getting “more” competitive. Well, it manifests in the form of even crazier start-line tactics, which ultimately result in 10 boats being disqualified in two races! We finish 29th and 38th, respectively, and finish out the day in 27th place overall.

Race Day 3: By day 3, fatigue and bruising really start to become an issue. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a physical mistake that struck, it was mental. The back of the boat (yes, I’m finger pointing) managed to shred our spinnaker during a downwind practice run. Disaster! In line with class rules, you are not allowed to carry extra sails. So, we were faced with a choice: sail the downwind legs with our genoa, or head back to the dock and get our spare, risking the possibility of missing the next start. We made a quick decision, hustled back to the dock, picked up our replacement spinnaker, and missed Race #5. However, we made it back to the fleet in time for the start of Race #6. We sailed well, and placed well, but were forced to take a scoring penalty which put us in 36th place when the dust settled. Not a (Ramblings continued on page 21) great day.

Race Day 4: After Wednesday's blown spinnaker debacle, what else could go wrong? Steaming out to the race course, I spotted a small fray in the jib halyard. An odd occurrence considering it was a new line, and there was no obvious chaffing point that could have caused the damage. The skipper (owner) cut the frayed end and retied the hardware. I inspected the repair and didn't approve of the final product; but sometimes on a race crew, the skipper’s word is final. On the 2nd upwind beat of race 7... Kablooey! Line blown, and the tail end quickly retreated into the mast. This was a total disaster. We had to use the spinnaker halyard and switch between sails at each rounding, which is a complex maneuver for the deck crew to execute without losing boat speed. We quickly went from top 20 to top 60, 58th to be precise. Did I mention that it was raining, too? Between races, while sailing back to the starting line, we had to send the bow guy up the mast to feed a new line into the mast. It worked, and the rig was repaired! The 8th race was a forgettable mid pack finish, with another scoring penalty, putting us back at 53rd when all of the protesting was completed. Not a brilliant day. We are now deep in the middle of the fleet.

Race Day 5: I have no memory of day 5, and my notes are very few. We finished 29th in Race 9, and ended up 69th (or dead last) after being assessed another scoring penalty. My arms and legs are covered with purple marks punctuating every smashbang moment of the last 5 days.

All said and done, we made too many mistakes to be competitive with this fleet. We had moments of brilliance, but they were few. We ended up a disappointing 50th in the overall standings, and the winner was a fellow American (Will Welles) who sailed consistently in the top 10, save one race where he finished 46th. His regatta results clearly show how important it is to be not just fast, but consistently fast.

The Russell G. Slayback Award:

Sometimes, Good Things Take Time!

The concept of the Slayback Award is to provide: "HONOR AND RECOGNITION OF EXEMPLARY SERVICE, ABOVE AND BEYOND, TO THE NORTHEAST SECTION AIPG" Thus, the Slayback Award is intended to be presented on those rare occasions when truly landmark, exemplary service has been given to the Northeast Section of AIPG for a protracted period of time by an AIPG Certified Professional Geologist who is a Member of the Northeast Section. "On those rare occasions" is the operative phrase, as the Slayback Award was never intended to be "presented annually."

The formative concept of the Slayback Award was to honor Russ Slayback, CPG, for his remarkable service to the Northeast Section, . . . which included: Numerous, long-standing roles on the Executive Committee, Leadership in fulfilling various Offices of the Section, Remarkable, long-standing commitment as Newsletter Editor for many years, Yeoman, protracted Service to the Section, in uncountable ways.

Anyone may provide written, descriptive nominations of candidates ( . . . and of their contributions to NE/AIPG) for the Slayback Award, by CONFIDENTIALLY submitting the nomination to any one of the previous recipients. Selection of Awardees is made by the previous recipients, in CONFIDENTIAL discussions with the NE/AIPG Section President. Although individual Members of the ExCom may be consulted for their input on a CONFIDENTIAL basis, . . . the selection of recipients is NOT made by the ExCom. Confidentiality, to maintain the element of surprise in honoring the Recipient(s) and his/her/their long service, is a cornerstone concept of the Slayback Award. Confidentiality is also an important concept in

those rare cases where a CPG is nominated for the Slayback Award, but the decision is made not to proceed at that time.

The last time that the Slayback Award was presented was at the 2007 NE/AIPG Spring Meeting, which was the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship and The Perpetual Trust Fund. On May 16, 2007, the Slayback Award was present posthumously to Angelo Tagliacozzo, in honor of his long, extensive service to NE/AIPG.

Both well before and since Angelo was honored in 2007, it has been clearly recognized that there are several NE/AIPG Section Geologists who are long-serving and highly-deserving of the Slayback Award. A series of health, life, and work issues preclude the previous Slayback Award recipients from proceeding with presentation of the Slayback Award to these individuals, as anticipated in 2008 and 2009. In the Spring of 2010, it was clearly recognized that several exceptional Section Members (with very long histories of remarkable service) were clearly "way overdue" to be honored. Arrangements were made to proceed with the preparation and the presentation of the Slayback Award to several individuals, . . . only to have a variety of last-minute crises prevent that from coming to fruition. The press of work, other on-going volunteer work for NE/AIPG, real life, etc. resulted in the continuing delays. Now, in 2015, "overdue to be honored" is the case in spades!

September 2014 meeting minutes were reviewed and minor edits recommended. A motion was made, seconded and there was no further discussion. The September meeting’s minutes were approved for publication in the newsletter.



Treasurer’s Report: The status of the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship (ATMGS) fund was discussed. The ATMGS fund decreased slightly from August to September, likely due to market fluctuation. Additionally, postage for scholarship mailing was paid for through the ATMGS fund. Bankcard fees were briefly discussed. The Section budget is currently in good standing.



Correspondence: Jeff Frederick noted that NE-AIPG e-mail information was checked and updated. Scholarship inquiries will be directed to Dennis McGrath and general inquiries to Jeff Frederick. Corrections to the job posting section of the webpage were made to allow for proper posting.

Old Business: Election Results: Voting turnout was high for the 2015 election. Jeff Frederick and Bob Blauvelt to remain president and treasurer, respectively. Four new members were voted in: Jessica McEachern (president-elect), Michael Grifasi (secretary), Christopher Brown (at-large), and Luanne Whitbeck (at-large). National was acknowledged for setting up the election ballot.

Short Course: On behalf of Bob Blauvelt, Jeff Frederick provided details on the short courses that NE-AIPG is currently planning. The fractured bedrock course is anticipated to be held in 2014 and the “GIS for Environmental Professionals� course is anticipated to be held in spring of 2015. The New Jersey Licensed Site Remediation Professionals Association (LSRPA) has inquired about potentially partnering with NEAIPG on a geophysics short course sometime in 2015.

ATMGS: Utilizing the ATMGS fund, NE-AIPG awarded a total of $22,000 in scholarships in 2014. Twenty-four applications were received and 10 scholarships were awarded. The ATMGS award criteria utilized by NE-AIPG were briefly discussed. Award is based on both financial need and academic (October 2014 Meeting Minutes continued on page 33)

quality. Additionally, transcripts are reviewed to verify that applicant is focusing in geological science.

New Business: AIPG National Meeting (2014 and 2017): Jean Neubeck was congratulated for becoming the AIPG TPG editor. Jean discussed her attendance at the AIPG National Meeting in Arizona.

Feedback from other sections illustrated that issues are similar from section to section. A discussion pertaining to the NE-AIPG hosting of the 2017 National Meeting followed. Jean noted that there was competing intent to host the 2017 meeting. Level of effort for Section would include marketing and location scouting, with National handling logistics. It was determined that a quick decision regarding hosting this meeting is imperative. Potential locations for the 2017 National Meeting were briefly discussed.

Publication Schedule: Chris Proce is taking over Newsletter responsibilities moving forward (including Holiday 2014 issue).

Editing of both the Indian Summer Newsletter and the Holiday Newsletter are happening concurrently. Distribution of the draft Indian Summer Newsletter expected within the week and the Holiday Newsletter around November 1st. A brief discussion pertaining to the cost to produce each Newsletter and the possibility of combining issues took place. It was identified that costs decreased and overall quality increased as the Newsletter was transitioned from print to digital. The 2015 publication schedule will follow the 2014 schedule (four Newsletters, one directory).

Directory of Members (DOM): The DOM was briefly discussed.

The Ex Com discussed the possibility of allowing vendors to print the DOM on their own if desired. It was stated that the cost of NE-AIPG printing and distributing the DOM would exceed annual advertising revenue.

The Ex Com considered speaking with National to determine if a printed DOM could be added as a pay option during annual membership renewal.

New York State Professional Geologist (PG) Bill: John Nadeau, president of the New York State Council of Professional Geologists (NYSCPG), presented the current status of the PG bill to meeting attendees. The Bill has passed both the State Senate and Assembly and is currently awaiting signature by Governor Cuomo. It was speculated that the November 2014 election was delaying the process.

Adjournment – 2:54 pm: Motion made, seconded – no discussion. Motion for adjournment passed and the meeting adjourned.

There were seven Ex Com members on the conference call representing a quorum.

Secretary’s Report: October 2014 Minutes: The draft October meeting minutes had been circulated by email prior to the call and the draft minutes were reviewed and discussed.

Several edits were discussed; the draft October minutes are to be revised and recirculated for a vote during the January 2015 Ex Com meeting.

Treasurer’s Report: Bob Blauvelt had circulated the October Treasurer’s report by email prior to the call. According to Bob, the November statement on the section accounts had just closed and therefore, not yet available for inclusion in a Treasurer’s report.

The October Treasurer’s reports (Section and Angelo Scholarship Fund) were reviewed and general observations noted and discussed.

Old Business: Hosting the 2017 National Meeting: During the October Fall meeting, several Ex Com members had agreed to complete some research and identify potential venues, should the NESection consider volunteering to host the 2017 National Meeting.

During the discussion, several potential venues were mentioned, including New York City as a potential location. However, NYC is generally perceived as costly and intimidating to members outside of the metro area. Tom West indicated that from past experience with hosting the Springfield, MA and Saratoga Springs, NY meetings, one of the key success factors was selecting a location that would increase participation of the NE Section membership; both attending as well as supporting the organizational efforts. Several people indicated that participation from the Section may no longer be as important, since National has taken the lead on coordinating the meeting venue and logistics. The host Section is now principally responsible for lining up activities and speakers. Jean agreed to follow-up with the Arizona Section that had recently hosted the 2014 National Meeting to discuss their level of involvement and logistics. Currently, none of the Sections have made a firm commitment for hosting the 2017 annual meeting, although Jean Neubeck had noted that the TN Section was considering potentially putting in a bid to host the 2017 meeting. In addition to the location and logistics, the potential profits to the Section for hosting the National Meeting were discussed. Based on the NE Section’s experience from hosting the 2004 National Meeting, most of the profits realized from the meeting were derived from sponsorship and holding several Short Courses. Several people suggested that the Ex Com invite Dan St. Germain, who was critical to the success of the 2004 Annual Meeting, to participate in the January 2015 Ex Com meeting to discuss the process and provide insight on the tasks required to host the annual meeting. We have Dan’s annual meeting planning binder. Jeff Frederick recommended that the NE Section establish a sub-committee to further explore the level of effort necessary to host the National Meeting, including determining how the revenues are shared.

Jean Neubeck agreed to reach out to the Arizona Section (and then National) to discuss the arrangements and logistics for hosting the National Meeting. Further discussions on the potential to host the 2017 National Meeting were slated for the January 2015 Ex Com meeting.

Short Course Update: During the last discussion regarding short courses, Bob Blauvelt had mentioned potentially teaming with the NJ LSRPA. Bob acknowledged that he had recently been struggling with obtaining meaningful responses from Rutgers and LSRPA on the potential for teaming up to hold the continuing education short courses. According to Bob, the central problems stemmed from the logistics for hosting courses on the Rutgers campus and selecting a convenient date for the course that didn’t conflict with ongoing student schedules.

Montclair State, however, has stepped in and is willing to participate in jointly hosting continuing education courses on their campus. Bob indicated that he was close to securing a commitment from Montclair State, and the NE Section should be announcing both a date and location for the planned GIS short course in early 2015. According to Bob, the GIS course would be hosted by Rutgers professors who have already committed to provide the course, and that Montclair State has a separate facility and parking that makes it much easier to coordinate scheduling and logistics with the campus. Bob agreed to provide further updates to the NE Section once the details had been finalized with Montclair State.

Section Contribution for the remaining balance of ATMGS Trust Fund for 2014: Prior to beginning the discussion, Bob Blauvelt provided an update and clarification on what the Section had previously contributed to the Angelo Tagliacozzo Memorial Geological Scholarship (ATMGS) Trust Fund as a matching donation during the March 2014 meeting, and what amount was not covered by the Section’s matching contribution. During the 20122013 scholarship period, the NE Section had provided a matching contribution to the scholarship fund in the amount of the awarded scholarships, but did not include sufficient monies to cover miscellaneous costs for mailing/notices amounting to several hundred dollars.

Additionally, during the 2013-2014 scholarship period, the Section provided a matching contribution for scholarship awards, but didn’t contribute the full amount of the scholarship award and did not cover miscellaneous costs for mailing/notices. The current deficit between administrative fees/scholarship awards and Section matching contributions was discussed. Dennis McGrath made a motion for a Section contribution to match the current scholarship award/spending deficit. The motion was seconded, and then a robust discussion was held concerning both this motion as well as the level of continued contributions moving forward (both 2014-2015 awards and beyond).

Following the discussion, the motion was voted on by the Ex Com and passed with a unanimous vote. Following the vote, the funding for the upcoming 2014-2015 scholarships was discussed. Based on the discussion, Bob Blauvelt has been tasked with establishing a draft 2015 Section Budget that would include potential funding for the scholarship. The draft budget will be discussed in greater detail during the January 2015 Ex Com meeting.

GSA 2015: The NE Section has agreed to host the AIPG Booth at the NE GSA meeting in Brenton Woods, NH on March 23-25th 2015. The Ex Com discussed volunteers for attending the meeting and staffing the booth. Nominal costs for exhibitors to attend the meeting have been previously covered by the Section as an operating budget expense. Bob Blauvelt noted that in 2014, the costs for attending the GSA meeting were limited and only covered National’s costs for shipping the booth to the meeting location.

New Business: ATMGS Trust Fund Drive: Jeff Frederick has volunteered to head up a Christmas 2014 scholarship fund drive. Jeff has agreed to send out multiple e-mails as we approach the holidays to market donations from members and advertisers for the ATMGS Trust Fund. New York State Council of Professional Geologists February 2015 Legislative Update The 2015 NYS Legislative year has begun. The Chapter Amendments that were requested by the Governor’s office as part of signing the law to establish the profession of geology were introduced in both chambers. As of this newsletter, the amendments had passed the Senate and were moving through the Assembly Committees. We are hoping the amendments will pass the Assembly prior during the budget negotiations.

The Office of the Professions is working to have seated at least two geologists on the Licensing Board by April. At that point, a committee will be formed to prepare the regulations for the State Education Department (SED). NYSCPG is pleased to report that we have been asked by the SED to assist their committee in preparing the regulations. NYSCPG has established a Transition Committee with the initial goal of helping State Ed as much as they request. This committee also will be tasked with preparing the Council for a new role as licensing is enacted.

Part of the Committee’s function will include reviewing bills in the Legislature and providing technical comments on the impact of respective bills.

As the regulations are formulated, we will coordinate with the Department of State and the Legislature to prepare a bill to ease the transitions of NYS corporations that are providing geologic services. All of these service companies will be required to become professional corporations starting in November 2016, and we are working to minimize the impacts of this transition, similar to when the Design Professional Corporations (DPC) for engineers and land surveyors was established in 2012. We will provide information in future newsletters as we work towards that goal.

The State Education Department has set up a web page for the Profession of Geology. It can be accessed at http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/geo/. This will be the portal to download applications, review the regulations, etc. once those are established. Feel free to bookmark it now, so you have it handy in the near future.

recipient of an ATMGS Trust Fund scholarship, has agreed to contribute a dollar for dollar match up to the amount of his original scholarship for all donations received during this fund drive. Way to go Jeff!

NYSCPG Call for Donations: The New York State geologist licensing bill was recently passed and became law. Upcoming actions that will be required include the writing of the regulations based on the passage of the bill and establishment of the geologist licensing board. These actions will occur over the next two years.

As a result, fundraising to shepherd the new law during the transition period until it becomes effective is currently being sought by NYSCPG. Based on preliminary budget forecasts, the NYSCPG is anticipating a budget shortfall in 2015 and will be seeking funding from NE Section (as well as others), to cover costs until the effective date of licensure (2017), when registration fees will cover the implementation of the law. NYSCPG is a separate entity and does not receive any funding from the passage of the law. As a result, the Section agreed to review its past contributions to NYSCPG, including the recent donations that were contributed in 2014. The Ex Com agreed that the Section needs to have a better understanding of the anticipated carrying costs, as well as NYSCPG fundraising efforts in order to gauge what may be appropriate for additional Section contributions as the new law is transitioned and becomes effective in November 2017.

Student Outreach – Student TPG: Jean Neubeck proposed that the NE Section consider purchasing additional copies of the Student TPG and providing the copies to ATMGS applicants. Tom West noted that as part of the application process, the Section does provide Student memberships to all of the ATMGS applicants. However, the membership is not processed in time for the applicants to receive the Student TPG until the following year.

Dennis McGrath suggested that we could pre-purchase thirty (30) copies of the Student TPG and mail them to the current crop of applicants, since we have the addresses for all of the scholarship applicants and the deadline for scholarship application submission is next week. Jean made a motion to purchase up to 30 copies of the Student TPG to provide to current ATMGS applicants. The motion was seconded, briefly discussed, and passed with a unanimous Ex Com vote.

ATMGS Application Update: Dennis McGrath provided a brief summary of the number of applications that he has received to date (note, 23 complete student applications were received by the submission deadline and are undergoing review by the scholarship committee). Jeff Frederick suggested that the Section consider asking scholarship awardees to write an article for the Section newsletter. The Ex Com all agreed that this is a great idea, and that we should be requesting articles from all of the student applicants as part of the application process. Several mentioned that the students probably already have a number of articles that they have prepared, and submission of these articles for publication would provide content to the Newsletter and would give the students an opportunity for publication and peerreview. Because the criteria for ATMGS applications have already been distributed and the deadline for submission is next week, it was agreed that this topic could be discussed further during the Jan 2015 Ex Com and again during the ATMGS award process in March 2015.

Newsletter Publication: Dick Young provided a brief update on the status of the Newsletter publication schedule. According to Dick, Chris Proce has recently taken over the reins as Editor from Mike Greenman, and Chris has already distributed the Holiday Newsletter to the Section members. Chris will be reaching out shortly for a “Call for Content” for the Winter Newsletter, sometime in early January 2015. The 2015 Newsletter publication schedule has been established, and it was included on page 86 of the Holiday Newsletter. In addition, the Holiday Newsletter has the 2015 Ex Com meeting schedule published on page 7, and Jeff Frederick has indicated that he will be sending out einvites to the Ex Com to lock in the proposed meeting schedule.

Finally, Dick indicated that with the older Newsletter publications now caught back up, he will be reaching out to existing advertisers, and, as always, will be seeking recommendations for new advertisers. Dick notes that the cost for advertisers is very low and that the advertisers benefit from a tremendously focused advertising effort, reaching over 750 professional geologist members in the Northeast region.

2014 Annual Meeting of National AIPG September 12 – 16, Prescott, AZ Jean M. Neubeck, CPG 11438 I had the good fortune to attend the national AIPG National Conference in Prescott this fall. NE-AIPG President Jeff Frederick was unable to attend, so I took the opportunity to represent the Northeast Section in Jeff’s place. It was my first national meeting since it was hosted by NE-AIPG in 2004 and held in Saratoga Springs, NY. If you have never attended a national event, it was very rewarding and energizing to meet and network with so many terrific geologists from throughout the country who volunteer to carry out the work of AIPG and make it a success.

The conference was held jointly with the Arizona Hydrological Society (AHS) and took place September 13 - 16. Hundreds of people attended the multi-day event, which was packed everyday with activities from morning through evening.

There were numerous exhibitors and poster sessions to visit, including visual presentations related to the theme of “Water & Rocks - the Foundations of Life.”

I arrived in Phoenix on Friday afternoon and drove to Prescott, to be ready for an early Saturday that was completely filled with various business meetings. AIPG provided a handout in advance of the road side geology from Phoenix to Prescott, which was a good read on the plane and provided succinct information. With the exception of some minor (but exciting!) lane swerving to view features in traffic, the scenery was peaceful and provided great views of the mountains, cacti, and southwestern geologic landforms. A scenic rest area south of Prescott provided a good opportunity for viewing and snapping photos, and probably saved me from a traffic ticket.

Arriving at the Prescott Resort, I checked into a spacious and well-appointed room that included a separate lounge-den area and a balcony, so many of us were happy enough to stay in the building for the indoor activities and events.

Various business meetings were held throughout Saturday, including the Executive Committee and joint meetings with Section representatives from throughout the country. Several others participated, including Advisory Board members and guests from the London Geological Society, in addition to two geology majors from the University of Georgia (Columbus, Georgia), who won the student chapter award and an expenses-paid trip to the national meeting. A mid-day luncheon between meetings featured award presentations among the food, networking, and socializing.

Sunday’s activities included an evening reception and various day-long field trips, including a canyon dam, a mine, and the Grand Canyon. Embarrassed that as a geologist I have lived so long and never seen the Grand Canyon, the guided trip to the south rim was my obvious choice. I felt like a kid in a rockcandy store, and was awestruck by the panoramic vistas at every step. Taking geological photos was so easy, just point and click – every direction offered a perfect photo-op. The guides for all the well-attended field trips were knowledgeable and the participants enjoyed themselves, judging by the smiles on their tired, but enthusiastic, faces. Later on Sunday, the evening reception was sponsored by our own Northeast Section, so I took pride in attending and seeing so many geologists enjoying the tasty hors d'oeuvres and each other’s company.

Monday’s breakfast started with a keynote speaker to kick things off. The field trips were repeated on Monday and Tuesday for those that couldn’t choose just one, but I elected to attend the numerous technical sessions and exhibits on both days. Even the luncheons were informative, with speakers and presentations on the on-going debate of dating the Grand Canyon features, and also a very interesting social perspective concerning how students actually learn and how best to present information to obtain the greatest retention.

I hope you all will take the opportunity to attend an annual AIPG meeting, if you possibly can. The experience was personally and professionally very rewarding, and I am very grateful to have represented the Northeast Section.

“We have had damaging earthquakes in the past and there is every reason to believe that at some point in the future we will have damaging earthquakes again,” said Dr. John Ebel, senior research scientist at Boston College’s Weston Observatory.

“This is a good opportunity to remind people across New England that we do live in an area that is prone to earthquakes.”

As many as 12 minor earthquakes, ranging from magnitude 1.0 to 3.1, have been detected by the United States Geological Survey and the Weston Observatory in the area of Plainfield, Killingly and Sterling, Conn., since January 8, with the most recent occurring at 9:39 a.m. This is the first “earthquake swarm” to occur in New England since a series of quakes shook Bar Harbor, Maine, in 2006, according to MEMA.

Geoscience Currents #96: U.S. Geoscience Enrollments & Degrees Robust in 2014 Throughout the country, there has been an ongoing trend in the growth of enrollments in geoscience programs for undergraduate and graduate programs during the 2013-2014 academic year. Enrollments continued their long-term growth trend with 6% and 4.5% increases for undergraduate and graduate enrollments, respectively. From 2012 to 2014, there has been a marked increase in degrees awarded, specifically at the Masters level. It is unclear if the oil field turndown following the drop in oil prices will affect the recent trend.

Penelope Boston studies caves and karst formations, and the special biology that lives in them — both here on Earth and possibly on other planets Why you should listen: Penelope Boston is fascinated by caves -- secret, mineral environments that shelter mysteries in beguiling darkness and stillness. She's spent most of her career studying caves and karst formations (karst is a formation where a bedrock, such as limestone, is eaten away by water to form underground voids), and is the cofounder of the new National Cave and Karst Research Institute, based in New Mexico.

Deep inside caves, there's a biology that is like no other on Earth, protected from surface stress and dependent on cave conditions for its survival. As part of her work with caves, Boston studies this life and has made the very sensible suggestion that if odd forms of life lie quietly undiscovered in Earth's caves, there's a good chance it might also have arisen in caves and karst on other planets. Now, she's working on some new ways to look for it.

XL Pipeline Passes Senate, but . . .

The Senate passes the XL Pipeline bill As of January 29, 2015, the Senate passed the bill approving the XL Pipeline with a bipartisan vote of 62-to-36, with nine Democrats aligning with the Republican majority. The version of the bill will need to be reconciled with the House version, which is a small hurdle. More importantly, the Senate vote was not a large enough majority to override a White House veto, which has been promised by the President.

The U.S. State Department, which has been reviewing the pipeline for more than six years, is now deciding whether this project to carry oil from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico is in the national interest. Congressional Republicans want to short-circuit the years-long process, and grant the Keystone XL pipeline a permit immediately.

Drilling in the Atlantic Obama Proposes Offshore Oil Drilling From Virginia to Georgia The Obama administration moved to open up a vast stretch of East Coast waters to oil and gas drilling; a decision that could have a profound impact on the economic and environmental future of states from Virginia to Georgia. The move also adds a new dimension to the legacy of President Obama. In an announcement that outraged environmentalists and brought grudging cheers from the oil and gas industry, the Interior Department unveiled the latest part of its five-year plan for the government to sell leases for oil and gas development in federal waters from 2017 to 2022.

The plan would open up one lease sale area off the southeast stretch of the Atlantic Seaboard, an area the oil industry has long hungered to exploit. It would also open new portions of the Gulf of Mexico, which is already open to drilling. And in a move that appeased environmentalists, but angered Alaskan Republicans, it will ban drilling in portions of the Arctic Ocean’s Beaufort and Chukchi Seas.

“This is a balanced proposal that would make available nearly 80 percent of the undiscovered technically recoverable resources, while protecting areas that are simply too special to develop,” the interior secretary, Sally Jewell, said in a statement.

Environmentalists said opening the Atlantic waters would put the coasts of Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia at risk for an environmental disaster like the BP spill that struck the Gulf Coast in 2010, when millions of barrels of oil washed ashore after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig. Advocacy groups in those states said that the drilling could harm tourism, fishing, and other coastal industries that are already major drivers of the Southeastern economy.

Lawmakers from both parties in those coastal states have pushed for years to open their waters for drilling. The Interior Department estimates there are 3.3 billion barrels of recoverable oil on the Atlantic’s outer continental shelf and 31.3 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
