Message from the President Dear Families, Alumni, and Friends of Notre Dame Schools, A few nights ago, my family and I were blessed to hear the music of Mozart performed by the Cleveland Orchestra at the Blossom Music Center. This was an absolute treat. To be outside during summertime with a delighted crowd helped us all to take deep breaths and be grateful that life seems to be returning to normal. I hope this letter and Seasons magazine finds you well and enjoying summer weather.

Though students completed their school year a few weeks ago, our campus is alive with progress. Painters, carpenters, masons, electricians, and plumbers are on campus daily to make our schools shine and our buildings ready to welcome our students back in August. We are a National Blue Ribbon campus committed to continual improvement in all areas and to being a welcoming, inviting community. We have worked diligently to plan enhancements for student learning and athletics campus wide. We are making those plans come to life.

I wanted to take a moment to make sure you knew how much we appreciate your care and your generous support of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin and Notre Dame Elementary Schools. Despite COVID, I am proud to say that the academic year was a success. But for a few weeks near the holidays, the campus remained open for in-person learning. To our knowledge, only 20% of K-12 students in the United States had this same opportunity. This was only possible because of the gifted leadership of our principals, Mr. Waler and Dr. Hoynes; the creative and selfless commitment of our faculty and staff; the awesome and persistent efforts of our students and the partnership with our families. We celebrated our Class of 2021 with in-person commencement ceremonies for our 156 seniors and

Back on Campus After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and minor in Theology, and later a Master’s in Education, both at the University of Notre Dame, Suso began his “second” NDCL journey as a theology teacher in 2011. He was drawn to a similar community at Notre Dame that he experienced at NDES and NDCL—a community of educators who care for their students academically, as faithful men and women, and encompassing the extracurriculars that a major university offers. “Much like NDCL embodies the very best of Catholic education in northeast Ohio, I found the University of Notre Dame to be the very best Catholic University in the country.” Suso smiles when reflecting on his teaching days. “Teenagers are remarkable. Their enthusiasm, joy, and inquisitive nature is what makes teaching high school students so rewarding. As a theology teacher, I had the ability to share things that could be immediately relevant to my students’ lives, as they looked to understand the world around them." In 2013, Suso made the jump from classroom to Director of Admissions. His warm and calm presence in taking prospective families on the journey of the high school selection process is a reflection of the witness in faith he credits the Sisters of Notre Dame instilling in his work.

Clearly, the theology teacher and coach inside him exudes his personality and style. Faith and family rest at the center of his actions.
What started out as a wonderful school for her children turned into a career, though working in a school was never something she envisioned growing up or as a young wife and mother. Her three children—Anthony, Alicia, and Ashley-all graduated from NDES and NDCL, and more recently John Carroll University.

Yet the educator never really left Suso upon his move to the admissions role. He continued his “teaching” ministry as an assistant ice hockey coach and as the head coach of boys lacrosse. His busy winter schedule forced him to end his hockey coaching, but the work is something Suso truly loves. “I love competing. Just like a teacher, I hope to help our students achieve their athletic goals and grow faith-filled young people who care for their teammates and opponents alike".
"This school community, stemming from the Sisters of Notre Dame, is why this - Josephine Ambrose place is so special for me.” Purposeful gratitude At the end of the day, he hopes families and students completing their NDCL journey take with them a sense of “purposeful gratitude," a desire to use what they learned at NDCL, along with their own unique gifts and talents, to positively impact the lives of others. “'Why NDCL?’ is an easy question to answer. You can certainly use data and student achievement to support your reason, but in the end it’s because of a lived experience with our community of 4

Ambrose echoes Suso in her commitment to the school’s mission that stems from the Sisters of Notre Dame. Serving as Director of Admissions at NDES since 2005, Ambrose transitions to a new role this summer as Executive Assistant to the President and working alongside Keven Krajnak in Notre Dame Schools’ Development Office. It was a growing family that introduced her to Notre Dame Elementary School more than 20 years ago. “When my son Anthony started in kindergarten at NDES, I was immediately drawn by the welcome and care shown to our family,” Ambrose recalls.
role was an opportunity to have my kids close by while working in a wonderful environment.” After a number of years as a volunteer, After Care supervisor, and office assistant at NDES, Ambrose was asked to fill the Admissions role previously done by Stephanie Suso, who was moving out of state. “Admissions work allowed me to share my passion for the school with our families and prospective families,” Ambrose says. “The growth that NDES has made even since my kids were enrolled is all so special to see.” The most rewarding part of her work has been watching the students grow up, and to finally see them get that 8th grade diploma. Witnessing the role NDES had in making a positive difference is what it’s all about.
“The kids have a ray of excitement when they graduate,” Ambrose says with a smile. “It’s because of the friendships they’ve made, the journey they’ve completed. That moment means so much to me because I’ve been privileged to be part of that with them.” Opening the door to Catholic education at NDES is one of the most affirming aspects of her life. The joy of welcoming new members into the NDES “family” is a natural extension that starts with her parents. “My parents could not be happier to see their grandchildren succeed in Catholic schools. They see the difference in all three of them. Growing up, Catholic school wasn’t something my parents could afford for us. This school community, stemming from the Sisters of Notre Dame, is why this place is so special for me.” The faith formation that NDES centers itself around makes an easy sell to the families Ambrose engages with in the school selection process. Not only sharing in the mission of the Sisters of Notre Dame, but also the physical space, sets the school apart. “Faith is so important to have in your life. To come to school and have prayer, a beautiful chapel, retreats, and the direct interaction with the Sisters, that guides our students and me every day. It is my constant reminder that Catholic education is a gift!” Encountering NDES graduates—whether at NDCL, the grocery store, or church--and seeing how they’ve grown up gives Ambrose great joy knowing that her work, in ways big and small, made a difference in their life. “I wouldn’t trade this place for the world!” Mr. Suso and Mrs. Ambrose are two examples of Christ’s self-sacrificing love for others. Their work in connecting hundreds of students and families each year to Catholic education by opening the door to the Notre Dame experience moves this campus forward with determination, love, and hope.

BARBARA WILLIAMS
Begins her work as NDES Director of Admissions “It was a fantastic day. We loved everything about it.” That’s how Barbara Williams describes her introduction to Notre Dame Elementary School 13 years ago when visiting with her husband Joe. This summer, Williams steps in to the role of Director of Admissions. Like Josephine Ambrose before her, Williams has been an active part of the school for a number of years. "In 10 years as a volunteer, I met so many wonderful people and made countless friends," she says. "Parent Association events, lunchroom aide, and assisting with the Christmas Boutique they've all fueled my love for this school." She looks forward to welcoming families into the NDES community. She fondly recalls the 5th grade student that toured them through Notre Dame. “The student spent an hour and a half with us, answering our questions and introducing us to all the teachers,” she says. “The warmth and kindness that was shown us…how can we NOT want this for our children?” All 3 of Williams' children attended NDES—Madeleine, Kate, and Paul is entering the 7th grade. Williams wants to be a stepping stone in the journey for families that seek a Catholic education for their children. Her role in introducing NDES sets the table for a lifetime of learning, kindness, and respect for dozens of new families each year. “My passion is for my family and for our school. Notre Dame is a part of the Williams’ world!”

The Class of
NOTRE DAME-CATHEDRAL LATIN SCHOOL On May 27th, NDCL marked its 31st commencement ceremony in a creative, outdoor event at the Mayfield Drive-in theater in Chardon.
This year graduates got the chance to walk across the stage and receive their diploma in cap and gown. The ceremony included some pre-recorded segments shown on the movie screen and concluded with the alma mater and fireworks. Welcome, 156 of our newest NDCL alumni!

Biomedical Symposium:
This spring, NDCL students participated in the annual Biomedical Symposium—a showcase of student research on medical case studies. Students learn about the biology of infection and immunity, basic microbiological lab skills, and the clinical mindset as they develop an evidencebased diagnosis for a specific case study. This semester was centered on the theme of vaccines.
Just perfect! Junior Madi Dutton was an ace on the softball mound for the Lions. She pitched two perfect games this season! Dutton joins Elyse Lucas `03 in throwing two perfect games in a season for the Lions. Way to go!
NDES Girls on the Run: NDES has been hosting Girls on the Run (GOTR), a national leadership and wellness program for elementary school girls in grades 3-5 for the past three years. This is a researched-based program with curriculum designed to support wellness, cultivating healthy relationships, building self-esteem, understanding your values, and challenging yourself to do your personal best in everything. Head Coach Kate Kraus shares the impact, "After coaching this program for three years, I can say with confidence the lessons are relevant and meaningful for each girl. It is never too early to start building leadership skills and emotional intelligence in our children. Having a program dedicated to girls and their developmental needs is essential.”

EVENT NOTRE DAME SCHOOLS
The Lion’s Mane Event: At Home 2021 was livestreamed on March 27th. The unique and creative 45-minute event captured fun and inspiring moments highlighting mission moments and members of the Notre Dame Schools community. From a virtual wine tasting to a stirring rendition of Amazing Grace by NDCL student Kayleigh Collins to a jazz performance by Johnny Britt `75, this year’s event was unlike any other. Culminating in the Holy Family Fund appeal, the event generated $137,000 for our schools. Thank you to all those who helped achieved our $50,000 goal for the Holy Family Fund portion of the event! Gold sponsors participated by ordering special “Party Packs” which included wine, a charcuterie board on a branded bamboo board, bread and olive oil, select sponsor gifts, all in a deluxe Notre Dame Schools tote bag. In March, Reunited Shorts took the stage in the Pat and Janet O’Brien Center for the Performing Arts. Under the direction of Ms. Shirley Ivancic Stall, the production was a hit. Unlike a traditional spring musical, Reunited Shorts is a series of short plays centered around various types of reunions. The small cast and two-person scenes made it easy to work in small-group settings for rehearsal and the show.

In May, the NDCL Stage Band and Marching Band took to the outdoors to perform their annual spring concert. Songs like "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Moonlight Serenade" and everything in between entertained the audience around the Cross Country pavilion on NDCL’s campus. “We were determined to perform, despite the challenges,” said Adam Pysell `05, NDCL’s Music Director. “We found new and creative ways to share our talents with the NDCL community by using the pavilion. It went so well, maybe this becomes an annual tradition!”
