Message from the President April 2022

Everyone of us reading this is either a child or was one at some point.

However, not everyone of us was blessed to learn and grow in a dynamic, caring community and learning environment.

Dear Families, Alumni, and Friends of Notre Dame Schools, It was my wonderful experience in Catholic high school as a student many years ago that helped me glimpse what an intentional, loving, enthusiastic, and academic community could be. The picture on this page is of me as a high school junior.

I know that in that year, I focused on academics, celebrated new friendships, ran for student government, participated in retreats, and attended leadership conferences. My world was just beginning.

Today, many years later, I am a father of a high school junior and freshman, I cannot help but be nostalgic, and absolutely hopeful for their young and promising lives. It is the same hopeful spirit I have carried for our students as a teacher, coach, campus minister, and administrator over these past 28 years.

I am so inspired by the accomplishments of our talented students, advancing to state level competition in Indoor Track, Swimming, Robotics, Art, and Wrestling. In this edition, I ask you to celebrate with us the Ohio State Champion 4x400m team and the Adidas Indoor Track National Champion 1600m sprint relay team! Wow, what accomplishments!

Looking back over these years, it does not surprise me that I have dedicated almost all of my adult life to working to help co-create and re-create the experiences that shaped me as a high school student so many years ago. From my work, I have glimpsed so many awesome moments and have encountered so many bright, idealistic, thoughtful, and talented people – students, faculty, administrators, alumni, and families. From this brightness, we form intentional and awesome community.

From this community, we learn together about the horrors of war in Ukraine and we form conscience in solidarity with the countless millions of people so brutally affected by Russia’s inhumane aggression. In this community, we study, we pray, and we bake.

Led by NDCL principal, Mr. Waler, our Trela Dining Commons was transformed with community to bake and prepare foods for sale as a fundraiser for Ukrainian relief.

On campus, we continue to move forward and to emerge from winter and from Covid. Thankfully, our community is healthy and the state of our schools is strong. From a position of strength, we announced the formation of a new concept for our campus: Notre Dame Middle School in grades 6-8. The vision is to ensure that our oldest elementary students are better served by a distinct 2

experience of learning and of social-emotional growth. Led by Notre Dame Elementary School principal, Dr. Hoynes, Notre Dame Middle School will open this fall 2022 with an honors curriculum, expanded curricular and elective offerings, and new space.

Graciously, the Sisters of Notre Dame have given to Notre Dame Schools the third floor above the elementary school which we will begin to adapt for learning space beginning this summer.

I am grateful to our Notre Dame Schools Board of Directors who continue, selflessly, to prioritize our mission to educate leaders who transform the world, as Jesus did, by living the truth in love.

Their work continues to position Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, Notre Dame Elementary School, and, now, Notre Dame Middle School to be the preeminent destination for excellence in Catholic education for students ages 3-18 in northeast Ohio.

For all of the ways that you support our work on behalf of students and building up this awesome community, I thank you.

“Chef Jay” Cabatingan defines the American dream American citizenship comes to Notre Dame Schools ‘Top Chef’

They say that good food comes from good family. The culinary team from AVI Fresh, Inc. that fulfills the food service and hospitality for Notre Dame Elementary School and Notre DameCathedral Latin embedded into the “Lion family” right away.

Led by Resident Chef Jay Cabatingan, the AVI team has been part of the school community since 2019. “Chef Jay” was quickly taken by the family feel of campus.

“The NDCL students and faculty are so friendly and honest. That means so much to me. One time a student came to our register and said he forgot to pay for his meal. That integrity is so important, and inspiring in young people.”

Cabatingan had quite a momentous 2021. In July he and his wife Megan welcomed their second child, Camile. She joined big brother Carlos at the family’s home in Madison. Then in December he passed the citizenship exam with the Oath of Allegiance occurring in January, 2022. To celebrate him and his achievement, the entire NDCL student and faculty gave him a communal blessing during the all-school Mass on the feast day of the United States of America on December 8th—the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

A native of the Philippines, Cabatingan was inspired by his grandmother to love cooking. A home economics teacher, she always found her grandson by her side at the stove.

“Grandma would be proud of the path I’ve taken and knowing that she inspired me to do this,” he says. “I get to play an important part in these students’ daily lives, and it is their favorite time of the day!”

“That was such a special moment for me”, he says. “To see the entire school pray in celebration of my citizenship means so much to me. The

AVI Staff inspired each day Cabatingan is blessed with an incredible staff of men and women who come to campus each day knowing they get to do what they love in a place they’ve all come to call home. The staff of 7 all use the same words to describe “Chef Jay”— dedicated, compassionate, relaxed.

Manny Grande convinced Cabatingan to go for the citizenship exam. “He was nervous to take the test, but I told him he could do it,” he says.

“Jay takes a lot of pride in both his work and his citizenship. I’ve been a citizen for 10 years now and I wanted Jay to feel that same way about this country.”

Nancy Salem and Cheryl Lane describe themselves as “school moms” as they’ve gotten to know the students over the years. It’s very normal for students to talk with the AVI stuff about music, food, and even how their day is going. “We take care of them”, Nancy says.

“We’ll make them ginger tea if they’re not feeling well. At Christmas time 5 recent graduates stopped by and gave us hugs. That means so much to us. It makes us feel part of this school family just like the teachers, the parents, and everyone else.”

The AVI team knows that the food is the star of the show. Each member of the team wanted to share a favorite recipe of theirs with the Notre Dame Schools community:

Beat Sugar, oil, add egg 1 cup sugar oil Combine flour, soda, baking soda, salt 1/2 cup light olive y to cinnamon, ginger, mix well. Add Dr ni 2 large eggs chi zuc wet, do not over mix. Combine water, tripe, vinegar, salt, vanilla, and bay leaf in a large stockpot over high heat. Bring to a boil and skim off any foam that accumulates. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover pot, and simmer for 1 1/2 hours. Transfer tripe to a plate and set aside to cool. Reserve 1 to 2 cups of the cooking liquid.

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add pancetta and onion; cook and stir until pancetta is browned and onion is translucent, 6 to 7 minutes. Stir garlic into pancetta mixture; cook and stir until aromatic, about 2 minutes.

Stir marinara sauce, 1 cup reserved tripe liquid, and red pepper flakes into the pancetta mixture. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 30 minutes.

Cut tripe into 1-inch cubes and add to marinara-pancetta sauce; stir to combine.

If needed, add 1 cup of the reserved tripe liquid. Simmer for 30 minutes.Mix garbanzo beans and mint into the sauce. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Sprinkle with Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and serve.

1/4 cup Extra virgin olive Oil 1 Onion , diced 1 bell pepper , diced 4 cloves Garlic 3 roma tomatoes , very finely diced Bay leaf 1 teaspoon paprika , sweet or smoked 1 pinch saffron threads* Salt and pepper ¼ cup white wine , 4 boneless , skinless chicken thighs cut into pieces*

¼ cup flat leaf Parsley chopped, divided 2 cups Spanish Rice* 5 cups Chicken Broth* 1/2 cup frozen peas ½ lb Jumbo Shrimp 1/2 lb Mussels 8 oz calamari rings Lemons , for garnish

1. Preheat oven to 425°F .

2. Pound chicken breasts to an even thickness. Combine brea d crumbs, parmesan, garlic powder, se salt and pepper on plate. asoned 3. Dip chicken in ranch (or marinate over night) and then co at in bread crumbs. Place on bakin g sh Sprinkle with additional eet. pa cheese (if desired) and sp rmesan ray with cooking spray.

Add olive oil to a skillet over medium heat. Add the onion, bell peppers and garlic and cook until onion is translucent. Add chopped tomato, bay leaf, paprika, saffron salt and pepper. Add white wine and cook for 10 minutes.

Add chicken pieces, 2 tablespoons chopped parsley and rice to the pot.

Pour the broth slowly all around the pan and jiggle the pan to get the rice into an even layer.

Bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat to medium low. Give the pan a gentle shake back and forth just once or twice during cooking. (We don't ever stir the rice, so that a crispy crust forms at the bottom, called a socarrat).

Cook for about 15-18 minutes (uncovered), then nestle the shrimp, mussels and calamari into the mixture, sprinkle peas on top and continue to cook (without stirring) for about 5 more minutes.

Watch for most of the liquid to be absorbed and the rice at the top nearly tender.

Remove pan from heat and cover pan with a lid or tinfoil. Place a kitchen towel over the lid and allow to rest for 10 minutes.

Garnish with fresh parsley and lemon slices.

Serve.

Inspiring young minds, one at a time LifeAct’s Jack Binder `76 empowers kids to make a difference Jack Binder is a builder. A builder of character, relationships, and humanity. The 1976 graduate of Cathedral Latin is CEO and Executive Director of LifeAct, a Chagrin Falls-based non-profit whose mission is “to prevent suicide by teaching young people to recognize the warning signs of suicide in themselves and their peers, and to seek professional help.”

“Life is a participation sport,” Binder says. “You have to roll up your sleeves and get involved. Be involved in something that has meaning to you and enriches your life.”

Since 2014, Binder has guided the organization through strategic planning, restructuring, rebranding and large-scale expansion to better serve its mission. In 2016, The Cleveland Foundation named him its “Encore Person of the Year” which recognizes an individual for their innovative work to enhance the lives of Greater Clevelanders. Today, 200 schools in 15 counties are served by LifeAct and its instructors —professionals who talk to students about warning signs and action steps in suicide prevention for themselves and their peers. Annually, more than 30,000 students benefit from this program.

“We have a fabulous team,” Binder says. “This is a passion for us. We don’t work a day in our life. If I am not creating that feeling for my team, then I am failing them as a leader.”

Believing in the value of relationships goes back to Binder’s time as a student at Cathedral Latin. After a number of years, he re-connected with classmates and didn’t miss a beat.

“Those four years (at Latin) are an imprint that never goes away.”

LifeAct instructors are present at NDCL today as a recurring program and outreach for the students. It’s no surprise to Binder that the NDCL students are engaged. For example, the NDCL Volleyball team raised more than $6,000 as a fundraiser this year for LifeAct. “The character of the students inspires me,” he says. “We go in and teach the kids how to leverage their knowledge and courage to help their peers who may be facing mental health struggles. They’re amazing. My first time at NDCL, over 70% of kids knew someone struggling right now. It’s OK to talk about this. The kids know this.

Sometimes it’s us adults that need to adapt to this.”

Binder is motivated by the youth advisors that step up in participating in LifeAct’s mission. Over 30 teens form a “sounding board” that keep Binder and his staff up to speed on developments, 6

issues facing their peers, and awareness and messaging.

“Empowering kids is how LifeAct works. We show the students that they can do this and that we trust them.”

At a recent reunion, Binder heard the Latin alma mater for the first time in a long time.

“It came back to me in a hurry. It brought back so many great memories of my time at Cathedral Latin.”

Katie Tercek comes home to WOIO 19

‘Dream come true’ as NDES and NDCL graduate returns to Cleveland A true Lion homecoming occurred last summer as Katie Tercek was hired at WOIO 19 as a reporter. For the 2014 NDCL graduate (and 2010 NDES graduate), it was a dream come true.

“It was always my plan to come back to Cleveland,” she says.

“It happened quicker than I ever thought possible.”

Tercek went on to St. Bonaventure University after graduating from NDCL. From there, she got her first assignment in Great Falls, Montana and after that a stint in Evansville, Indiana.

Originally a psychology major, she moved to broadcast journalism and knew it was right for her. She gives credits to two individuals at NDCL in particular that gave her the confidence to make the transition and have success.

“Ms. Maureen Wahl and Mr. (Joseph) Waler, whether they know it or not, were such influences on where I am as a professional,” she says. “Ms. Wahl’s patience with me as someone who learned differently, and Mr. Waler pulling me aside after too many giggles on video announcements with a friendly reminder to ‘tone it down’ set me on a path. To have such positive influences around me at that point of my life, I am so grateful.”

Tercek is one of several in her family to be part of the alumni community. Her grandfather Frank Tercek `42: cousins Jason `92, Matt `95, and Brad `98 Tercek; cousins Andrew `06 and Samantha `09 Lesnick; and her siblings Becca `07 and Ben `10 are all graduates of Latin and NDCL.

“I grew up as an NDCL Lion,” she says. “Uncle Frank (Tercek) would be around campus helping with the fields and my older cousins were into baseball, there was always something to do.

The environment around Notre Dame is just like an extended family. Years later, we are great friends with so many who we met through the school.”

As a professional, Tercek is attune to the stories and people that shape the daily news cycle. Her passion is a focus on human injustices that surround us in our communities, region, and nationwide. In particular, Tercek is moved by a story she covered while in Montana about missing and exploited women on Native American reservations.

“I think the missing Native American women get swept under the rug by the mass media,” Tercek says. “There are few laws on reservations that protect them. Growing up in NE Ohio, I never knew about this. My work continues to bring me places and witness suffering that happens. This shapes me as an individual, as a professional, and as a citizen.”

What might Tercek say to the 16-year old version of herself?

“What you do with your life will make a difference in people’s lives. Be honest in everything you do, and operate with empathy and compassion. Having these traits will take you places.”

Sometimes, it takes you back home.

A GRAND welcome to Lion Stadium

Entry plaza, restrooms, concessions and Lion Spirit shop opens to guests this spring Finishing touches are being made to the newest addition to Lion Stadium in preparation for opening this spring.

New facilities for concessions, ticket sales, spirit wear and men’s, women’s and family restrooms will enhance the guest experience for students, alumni, families, and guests for stadium contests.

Since ground broke last summer, construction at the stadium moved along over the fall and winter. From the concrete pour to the arrival and installation of roof trusses, the progress kept our students, families, and guests engaged and excited for the coming years. At almost 25 years old, Lion Stadium has never looked so good!

Home of THE LIONS

An Improved View coming this summer New home grandstand, press box comes to the Home of the Lions Construction crews will return to Lion Stadium this spring and summer as we “improve our view” of Lion athletics. Thanks to generous donors, NDCL will remove the existing visitors’ bleachers on the west sideline of Lion Stadium and replace it with a brand new 1,400 seat home grandstand, press box, and concourse. The new seats will offer added capacity in its twenty rows, include approximately 100 permanent seatbacks, and offer close proximity to the new restrooms, concessions, and entry plaza. The current home bleachers will become the new visitors’ side for athletic contests.

“We are so grateful for the generous support from individuals who have stepped forward and made a commitment to NDCL for this project,” says NDCL Athletic Director Jim Clark.

“I am excited for everyone who attends NDCL athletic events at Lion Stadium that will benefit from these enhancements, as it will be an incredible fan experience for our fans.”

Many Lions advanced to state-level competition including the Robotics team, Art students, Boys Swimming, Indoor Track, and Wrestling. LIONS CLINCH STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN INDOOR TRACK 4X400M RELAY! In a thrilling finish at the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches State Tournament at SPIRE on March 5th, the Lions clinched the state championship in the 4x400 meter relay.

NATIONAL CHAMPS! At the Adidas Indoor Track Nationals in Virginia Beach, VA on March 18-20, 2022, seven Lions qualified to participate. Members of our community rallied to pay for flights, hotels, meals, and expenses to empower the students to compete in the Boys’ 4x200m, 4x400m, 800m, 3200m, and the Girls’ Weight Throw. 1600 Meter Sprint Medley

In his first year of coaching cross country at NDCL in 2020-21, Coach Ralph White also started an Indoor Track Program with 30 athletes. In his second year, he grew the program to 45 students in Indoor Track with many of them frequently achieving Personal Records (PRs). When asked about what is important in coaching, Coach White emphasizes “It is all about the kids. If you want to coach for success, don’t focus on the event. Coach the kid because everyone is unique with different gifts.” Coach White has had a variety of very successful coaching positions, including Head Women’s Cross Country and Track Coach at Clemson University. While with the Tigers,

his entire cross country team was awarded Academic All-American status.

His career started in 1977 at Eleanor Roosevelt High School (Greenbelt, MD) where his teams won three state titles. He then moved on to George Mason University to start their program before going to Southern Methodist University. He also served stints at Allegheny College (1986-1996), Williams College (2000-2007), Indiana University Pennsylvania and Ursuline College.

While at Williams, he earned National Coach of the Year honors in 2007. At every stop, he has proven his ability to build or cultivate programs to create established winners. He has coached 15 Olympians, over 350 All-Americans and 30-plus national champions as well as hundreds of conference champions and record-setting student-athletes. Asked about his work at NDCL, Coach White emphasizes “It’s a great job where I can build on what has been established and hopefully take it up another notch. The potential is unlimited.”

Cinderella takes the stage at NDCL

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic takes a bow

NDCL’s thespians and musicians hit the stage at the Pat and Janet O’Brien Performing Arts Center in March by performing the original Cinderella in a comeback musical after missing out in 2021 due to the pandemic.

For the younger members of the audience, this version was all new. To others, it was sheer nostalgia!

“The actors became builders and painters of the set as well as the stage crew for their own show,” says Director Shirley Ivancic Stall. “My hope is that each student has lasting friendships and memories to keep.”

Boehnlein a household name on Notre Dame campus

High school sweethearts Paul and Kim Boehnlein reflect on their love of Catholic education

Two students walked onto campus as strangers in 1992 not knowing each other nor the legacy they’d create 30 years later. Their courtship, marriage, and blessing of two children is a story that is only just beginning.

“Growing up we were in different Catholic grade schools,” says Kim (McHenry `96) Boehnlein. “Paul came from St. Mary Chardon and I came from St. Anselm’s. We dated since senior year at NDCL, went to universities close to each other, and are now blessed with two daughters (Emily and Sarah).”

The Boehnlein’s two children—Emily (5th grade) and Sarah (freshman) are at Notre Dame Schools. For Paul and Kim,

choosing NDES and then NDCL for their daughters was easy.

“We wanted them to have the same experience we had,” Paul says.

“The small class sizes, the caring nature of the faculty and staff, it’s all part of what makes this an awesome school. 25 years later, Mr. Scott sees me at NDCL and says hello, just like it was 1996 again.”

Faith formation and the close relationship with the Sisters of Notre Dame is close to the hearts of Paul and Kim. The way faith is intertwined into the curriculum, even math class, gives them hope for our future.

“We just love the connection with the Sisters of Notre Dame,” Kim says.

“The students making them cards, playing bingo with them, and our daughter taking piano lessons with Sister Susan Clark, it’s all part of the wonderful environment we are blessed to be in.”

The Boehnleins’ hope for their daughters is to be individuals who are kind and thoughtful to the needs of others. As a school seeking to Transform the World through its graduates, the couple wants their daughters to serve others in future careers they embark upon.

Just as they hope Emily and Sarah will transform the world, Paul seeks to transform the Notre Dame Schools campus as a member of the Buildings and Grounds Committee.

“Kim encouraged me to get involved at that level,” Paul says. “It takes a lot of hands, and the leadership of Dr. Michael Bates to keep the campus shining and thriving for the next generation of Lions.”

NDA 1971: Mary (Tumbry) Cubick retired from Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton after 40 years as a clinical pharmacist specialist. Mary kept her license up to date and helps out at an area clinic.

NDA 1978: Terry (Giles) Ross announces the birth of her grandson, Gregory, born 12/29/21, in Seattle. He joins his big sister, Aubrie, who was born 12/26/2017. He was born to our son, David (stationed at Joint Basis LewisMcChord), and his wife, Sierra.

NDCL 2000: The National Endowment for the Arts announced that Aubrey Hirsch is one of 35 writers who will receive a 2022 Creative Writing Fellowship of $25,000. These fellowships are highly competitive, with

Aubrey is the author of “Why We Never Talk About Sugar”. Her stories, essays and comics have appeared in The New York Times, TIME, Vox, American Short Fiction, The Nib, and in The New York Times best-selling anthology “Not That Bad”, among others. She is currently at work on a graphic memoir.

NDCL 2001: Nick and Beth (Tabaj) Kawalec celebrated their 5-year anniversary this past year and are very thankful to God for an amazing new home, their first home purchased together!

NDCL 2003: Sarah (Sankovich) Pascual and her family have recently moved to Savannah, GA where she is the new art teacher at Sol C. Johnson High School. In February, she was chosen as the school’s PACE STAR Teacher for the 2021-2022 school year. This award is granted to a teacher who has had a significant impact on the education of the school’s STAR senior.

CATCHING UP WITH...

“Catching up with…” is a new, recurring feature where we take a few minutes to hear from recent graduates of NDCL to get their perspective on how NDCL prepared them for college, graduate or post-graduate studies.

Catching up with Jackie Delahunty `16 Where are you now? Case Western Reserve University School of Law Studying what? Second year law student Looking back, how did NDCL prepare you for college? Academically, NDCL was more challenging than my undergraduate work at Miami of Ohio. I actually felt overprepared for college. NDCL’s emphasis on teaching critical thinking is huge for law school. Law is all about critical thinking.

What impact has your family made for your success? My family has always had faith in me, and trusted me which has allowed me to grow. They root for me, always telling me to “go for it!”.

What life lessons did NDCL teach you? My closest friends are NDCL graduates.

Community means so much, no matter where you are in life. Find your passion, get the tools you need to achieve, and you’ll be fine in whatever you choose to do.

Your advice to NDES and NDCL students today? The academic preparation you are receiving is invaluable. Take advantage of the College Credit Plus opportunities.

I did and was able to graduate a semester early.

Catching up with Sami Cooney `16 Where are you now? Temple University, School of Podiatric Medicine Studying what? Working towards a DPM (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine) Looking back, how did NDCL prepare you for college? Two individuals in particular, Mr. Poulos and Mr. Waler, pushed me to aim higher than what I was achieving. Mr. Poulos in chemistry, and then Mr. Waler always had us aim 5 steps ahead of where we were academically.

What impact has your family made for your success? My parents are my #1 fans.

They supported me exploring new waters as the first person in my family to pursue a career within the medical field and push me to differentiate myself in the rigorous application process.. Medical School is tough to get into, so I knew I would need to convince a panel of physicians what makes me stand out from other applicants.

What life lessons did NDCL teach you? I had the opportunity go be on the state championship volleyball team. This experience taught me the value of mental preparedness and toughness, something I need in med school. Now I can overcome challenges mentally before I tackle them physically.

Your advice to NDES and NDCL students today? Six years later I still keep the school’s core values close to my heart: Justice, Respect, Integrity, Community, and Excellence. At NDCL was the first time I was treated like an adult, and at the same time had expectations to act like an adult. Learn from your failures, seek what you want, and just keep going after it.

Catching up with Zack Zienka `18 Where are you now? University of Dayton Studying what? Marketing with an emphasis in sales Looking back, how did NDCL prepare you for college? Writing and time management. I give Ms. Vicky Frabotta much credit for this. Excellent writing skills is crucial in all of your courses in college. I had the chance to be involved in many extra-curricular activities at NDCL and this transitioned me well to college and juggling many responsibilities at once.

What impact has your family made for your success? I can’t give my mom and dad (Steve `92) enough credit. They give me advice and support the decisions I make—good and bad. They make me the best version of myself that I can be.

Without them I wouldn’t be the person I am today.

What life lessons did NDCL teach you? Appreciating the blessings that God has given me, including what it means to be part of a community. Dayton, like NDCL, is a tight-knit community, guided by faith. I can be on campus, walk by someone and say hello, without even knowing that person. The confidence to know that we are better together as one community.

Your advice to NDES and NDCL students today? Challenge yourself to do something different. Try something new. Put yourself out there and you’ll be much farther along than most people. A lot of good things can happen!
