• 2/3 of our Annual Fund dollars are from Giving Day alone. That’s huge! • We’ve come a long way: our first Giving Day in 2017 generated $8,200 from 93 donors. • Giving Day dollars helps fund the greatest needs of Notre Dame Schools. Tuition covers most of the costs, but private giving through Giving Day and Annual Fund helps fund programs, financial aid, and so much more! • It takes a COMMUNITY. This is one of our core values, and Giving Day is a day where our community rallies together for our students. 11.17 2022 NOTRE DAME SCH OO LS GIVING DAY NOTRE DAME ELEMENTARY Lionsgive.org Giving Day 2022: Here’s why it matters We’re counting on you this year! Dear Families, Alumni, and Friends of Notre Dame Schools, In this annual report, I hope you witness to the goodness, the momentum, the strength, and the many blessings 2021-22 brought to our students and campus.

With dedicated stewardship of resources and by the generosity of so many, we celebrate a year in which we accomplished much. First and foremost, our schools continue to be safely in-person and we continue to prioritize this experience for our students. With the support of the Notre Dame Schools Board of Directors, we prioritized an investment in the campus this summer which included:

• Refreshed 2nd floor wing for Notre Dame Middle School

• HVAC for the NDES cafeteria and gym

• HVAC for the NDCL Trela Dining Commons

• NDCL kitchen hood and charbroiler

• 20,000 square feet of new roof at NDCL over original 1964 building

• New 1400 seat grandstand and Alumni Patio at Lion Stadium

• New carpet and fresh paint in three NDCL classrooms and counseling offices

• Improved drainage on baseball and softball fields

• Improved pumphouse to serve the NDCL campus

We challenge our students each day to live by our core values of Justice, Respect, Integrity, Community, and Excellence. We build community that will, hopefully, inspire our students to co-create a world after graduation reflective of the community they experienced in our schools, one which is so different from the one they witness in the news.

As the war rages on in Ukraine, we are witnessing to a devastating, aggressive, and unprovoked war – not seen in Europe since World War II. Our country is fragmented and polarized, with divisions augmented by media and social media. In the midst of this are our 1160 students entrusted to our care, seeking to understand themselves in a chaotic world.

What we have witnessed in our world is a tendency to blame, to shame, to fragment human capacity for understanding. On our campus, we strive to do otherwise. We strive to connect one another through our Catholic faith and common purpose. We are a college prep campus of dedicated and talented faculty in partnership with parents and students achieving academic excellence. With integrity and with a focus on justice, we enlarge our hearts to consider a broader world. We educate leaders who transform the world, as Jesus did, by living the truth in love.

In this edition, we hope you glimpse the many people who make our mission thrive. We thank you for your continuing support and generosity as we build an even better campus for students now and well into the future.

Go Lions! Michael

Letter from the BOARD CHAIR

Dear Friends of Notre Dame Schools,

As an alumna of Notre Dame Academy, I value the gift of an excellent education in a faith- filled environment. I am proud to lead our talented, dedicated, and generous Board. The Notre Dame Schools (NDS) Board of Directors, formed in 2015, was a vision of the Sisters of Notre Dame (SND) to ensure the sustainability of the SND Educational Vision and Principles here on campus. It is our duty on the board through our committees to work with school leadership to plan development and to steward and secure ample resources. Though we are keenly aware of the operations of the school, it is our duty to open wide our vision far into the future.

During this past school year, the Board of Directors set in motion a dream of many years – the creation of Notre Dame Middle School, a joint venture between Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin and of Notre Dame Elementary School. In space provided by the Sisters of Notre Dame, 180 6th-8th graders now have a distinct space where their minds are challenged and they are called to belong, believe, and become all that they are called to be. We are grateful, particularly, to our dedicated faculty and staff who worked so selflessly on behalf of our students and schools, each and every day.

As I reflect upon the past seven years since the formation of Notre Dame Schools, I am very glad to report that both Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School and Notre Dame Elementary School are financially strong and most importantly continue to provide an excellent contemporary, challenging and faith inspired education to our students. This has been manifested as NDCL and NDES is each recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School.

For me, it is an honor to serve on the NDS Board of Directors whose work it is to ensure the mission of the schools thrives for years to come. I wish for you and your families continued safety and well-being.

52021-2022 ANNUAL REPORT

Globetrotting Latin graduate Ken Mueller `74 shares foundational advice and treasure

Ken Mueller ’74 is proud of his school and grateful for his time as a Cathedral Latin Lion. He played on the football team and recognizes that his team set a school record – the most losses in a season. When Ken was recently on campus, home from his life and work in Oman, he shared wonderful memories of his time growing up in Cleveland and how his education and his ambition took him to places and opportunities far beyond northeast Ohio.

“I never thought as a kid about work or life living abroad,” Mueller says. “There is so much in America to see and ex perience without going overseas. But I’d encourage young people today to experience other cultures, be open minded about new opportunities, and take risks when it comes to career choices.”

As Chief Business Development Officer for Yahya Group Holdings, his business experience in the Middle East for 35 years ranges from currency broker for American Express to oil and gas projects to packaging to hotel development. Mueller acknowledges the foundation Cathedral Latin set for him. He recalls how Latin taught him honor in his work and in how he treats others.

“When I am overseas in the Middle East, I treat the wait staff just like I do the Minister,” he says. “It’s a matter of respect to treat others like you would like to be treated.”

Stewarding the Cornerstone for over 40 years

On an evening in 1981, Ken and his classmate, Mike McGinty ’74, saw the rubble of what was Cathedral Latin School. When the decision to close the school was announced in the spring of 1979, thousands of graduates and their families mourned the loss of this treasured institution. For Ken and Mike to see the cornerstone to the 1929 annex building sitting in the demolition on top of broken bricks, they knew they needed to step in. By their own strength, they lifted the 500-pound stone into a truck. Ken has kept it at his home ever since.

In 2021, Ken met Notre Dame Schools President Dr. Michael Bates and offered the stone to the school. Dr. Bates gladly accepted.

“We want to honor our legacy,” Dr. Bates says. “This cornerstone, preserved from the ruins of a building that in spired the Men of Latin, will now inspire the young men and women of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. It is a touchstone to our past, and a call to our enduring faith and community. We are honored to put it on a pedestal for all to see, this cornerstone in deed and in truth.”

Mueller beams when seeing the cornerstone in place at Lion Stadium. “This is fantastic for the kids to see today. This school, this campus. It’s unbelievable!”

We are grateful to Ken because he is the reason that the cornerstone to the 1929 annex at Cathedral Latin was not lost when the building was torn down in the early 1980s. This cornerstone, stewarded by Ken for over 40 years, was recently installed and rededicated with the stadium at an event earlier this fall.

Dear Alumni, Families, and Friends,

Just like thirty-five years ago when Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin became the first Catholic high school in Geauga County to welcome boys, Notre Dame Schools continues to be a transformative leader in Catholic education by creating the first Catholic middle school in Geauga and Lake coun ties. Notre Dame Middle School launched in the fall of 2022. The schools have created synergies and are sharing resources and teaching talent thereby allowing middle school students a rich and wide variety of learning experiences. Students can earn credit for high school Spanish, receive band, choir, and art instruction from high school teachers, while taking electives such as “Travel the World”, “Amazing Animals”, “Talking to God” and “Sports Fever”.

As we create more opportunities for students, we are ever mindful of the challenges families face to afford a Catholic education. Our goal is to be able to partner with families to help make a Notre Dame Schools education as affordable as possible for families with demonstrated need. Demand for need-based tuition assistance has increased substantially at Notre Dame Schools with over 57% at NDCL and 26% at NDES/NDMS receiving assistance. We are thankful to our alumni, parents, and friends that believe in the investment of a Catholic educational and whose gifts truly transform the lives of so many our students.

We understand the sacrifices are families, faculty, and donors make to support Notre Dame Schools and continually seek ways to ensure disciplined stewardship of our resources while providing a transforma tive Catholic education for over 1160 students from age 3 to 18. On behalf of the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors, it is with pride that we share the good news of another strong financial year for our school. We engage an outside CPA firm to perform audit services on an annual basis. Although the audit is wrapping up, we anticipate no material changes to the operational results.

Rest assured, we will continue to balance budgets, invest in our infrastructure, and grow the en dowment. We will build on our strong foundation and continue our mission of “educating leaders who transform the world, as Jesus did, by living the truth in love.”

With gratitude,

Roger Maria (Jukanovic ‘99) Injic Director of Finance Notre Dame Schools

As the seasons change, Notre Dame Schools’ commitment to our students remains the same. Each day, we seek to educate future leaders who will transform the world, as Jesus did, by living the truth in love.

One impactful way you can partner in these efforts is through a bequest in your will. A growing number of supporters have chosen to include the school in their estate plans, providing long-term support and stability to current and future generations of students.

Making this lasting commitment is easier than ever thanks to our partnership with FreeWill: a free online estate planning platform that can guide you through the process of creating your legal will and establishing your legacy with Notre Dame Schools.

Visit FreeWill.com/NDSchools to learn more and get started on your plans.

Interested in another impactful way to give?

If you are 70.5 or older, IRA gifts are a powerful way to support Notre Dame Schools and reduce your future tax burden. If you are subject to Required Minimum Distributions, making a QCD allows you to meet your RMD without increasing your taxable income!

Visit FreeWill.com/QCD/NDSchools to learn more and make your gift.

Avis Pritchett `74testimonial for FreeWill

“I am forever grateful for the excellent education I received at Notre Dame Academy. It opened up many opportunities for me and it is with great pleasure that I am able ‘to pay it forward’ by leaving a bequest to NDCL.

FreeWill was thorough, easy to use and best of all FREE; I’ve been paying websites for years and this was a blessing.”

WHERE ARE OUR ALUMNI?

Our alumni are all over the country, literally. The darker the blue, the higher the concentration. Most have stayed close to home, with about 70% of Cathedral Latin, Notre Dame Academy, and NDCL alumni living in the Buckeye State.

Closest alumni: Of course some of our Sisters of Notre Dame that are alumni living on campus are among the closest to campus, we have at least one more within walking distance to school— Butternut Road in Munson Twp!

Farthest U.S. alumni: No surprise, but our Hawaii Lions are the farthest from NE Ohio (about 4,500 miles), followed a close second by Alaska.

Speaking of walking, the distance from Cathedral Latin School to Notre Dame Academy (on Ansel Road) was only 1.5 miles.

It would take a little longer to get to our campus in Munson Township, about 22 miles from Cleveland’s University Circle.

Our endowment portfolio is professionally managed to ensure annual returns that yield need-based tuition assistance awards and merit scholarships for our students. What goes into a NEW ENDOWMENT at Notre Dame Schools?

The WHY: Starting an endowment to honor or memorialize somebody special is often the first step. The threshold to begin a partially-funded endowed scholarship is $50,000.

“Sister Kay was an elementary school teacher and a special part of our family, and we wanted to do something to remember her and honor her gift from God to us.”

The HOW: Honoring this person through a named endowment is a forever gift, meaning the principal is invested in the school’s endowment portfolio and a portion is used each year for need-based scholarship support to a deserving student(s).

“What better way to create something that will live on forever in her memory than a scholarship endowment at the school where she began her career?”

The WHAT: You are making Catholic education within reach for families who seek tuition assistance for their son or daughter.

“We were raised in a very Catholic family with generations of vocations. Although it was a financial stretch for our parents they, especially our mother was committed to Catholic education for each of us.”

The END RESULT: About half of our students receive some sort of tuition assistance each year. You receive a yearly report about your endowed fund.

“Education is the key to success. No matter what the level, education creates better members of society and moves our country forward. By providing opportunities through a scholarship program we hope it will encourage the students to achieve their dreams. Even though we may never meet these students, we know that Notre Dame is dedicated to giving quality Catholic education.”

OPPORTUNITIES to make INVESTMENTS in NOTRE DAME SCHOOLS

TYPES OF SUPPORT:

ANNUAL GIFT TO NDCL OR NDES:

Your annual fund gift, whether on Giving Day or throughout the year, helps the school with its most important needs. A healthy annual fund is the catalyst for a thriving school community.

ENDOWMENT: A gift to an existing named endowed fund, or a gift starting a new endowment, is invested in the school’s endowment portfolio. Each year a portion of the endowed fund is used for tuition assistance for students with demonstrated need.

MEMORIAL GIFT: Remembering a loved one after their passing, or honoring someone on their birthday with a gift to Notre Dame Schools is a testimony to the impact that they have on your life.

CORPORATE GIFT: Businesses partner with Notre Dame Schools each year as a corporate sponsor of The Lions Mane Event or the Lions Golf Classic, in addition to signage opportunities at Lion Stadium and McGarry Gym. Consider partnering your business with Notre Dame Schools for this opportunity.

PLANNED OR ESTATE GIFT: Consider a legacy gift by including Notre Dame Schools as a beneficiary in your will, through a life insurance policy, or other form of deferred gift in your estate plan. After your lifetime, the school will realize your gift and your legacy is secure in furthering Catholic education on our campus!
