Message from the President

March 2021

Dear Alumni, Families, and Friends of Notre Dame Schools, As you well know, the grey skies of northeastern Ohio are ubiquitous in winter. We cannot control the weather, but we can shape our perspectives and our attitudes. The large tree in front of NDCL dropped its red and golden leaves and has withstood bitter cold and fierce winds. Through it all, it remains for me a symbol of strength and an inspiration. This winter we have witnessed a great deal in our world. Just as heavy snowstorms affect our power, our comfort, and even our safety, world events can shake us, too. Our mission at Notre Dame Schools is to educate leaders who transform the world, as Jesus did, by living the truth in love. We partner with our parents to mold and shape our students in an ethic of care. In the here and now, students are called to embody love and to act in a transformational way which shapes their world and ours. Everyday on the Notre Dame Schools campus we are focused on our Core Values of Justice, Respect, Integrity, Community, and Excellence. These are not merely words or idealistic goals for us; they are the standards by which we engage and shape our learning environment. In this issue, I hope you see the brightness on our campus. Just like a moment in a sunset or a sunrise or through a sparkle of sunlight through winter ice, light can seem ephemeral. Each of us is called to give witness to wonder and to goodness. It is easy to miss, though. Though the sun rises and sets each day, one has to look up, to go outside, and to seek the light. All around us is the wonder of life and learning on our campus. We hope to convey this to you in the winter edition where Light Shines Brightly on Notre Dame Schools. We are blessed by excellence in our athletic and Mock Trial programs. We are absolutely grateful for our generous community. We are humbled with respect for the many who shape our campus life each day and for those like Pete Pucher ’55, who helped shape and found NDCL. 2

WOW! Giving Day 2020 set a new high SMALLEST GIFT: for donors and dollars for Notre Dame Elementary School and Notre DameCathedral Latin School. Thanks to the generosity of alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends of Notre Dame Schools, new LED lighting enhances classrooms, offices, gymnasiums and hallways on campus. Some installation was done over Christmas and the project will be completed this summer.

Marguerite (Jost `47) Hrabak and her family span four generations at Notre Dame Schools, from Ansel Road in Cleveland to children at Notre Dame Academy in Chardon, to grandchildren and great-grandchildren at Notre Dame Elementary School. This lifetime of education and love for this campus radiates from her warm personality as she reflects on what Catholic education and Notre Dame means to her.

Marguerite gave a Qualified Charitable Deduction through her IRA on Notre Dame Schools’ Giving Day on November 19th. “A simple process—very easy for anyone to do,” she says. She feels blessed to do this for her school. “I was so glad when Notre Dame Academy and Cathedral Latin came together all those years ago,” she says. “The strengths of each school complement each other so well. The Giving Day success demonstrates that Notre Dame Schools is alive and well and so many others believe in it just like I do.”

We sat alphabetically and since there were no “I”s in the class, Hrabak sat next to Jost and I helped him as he struggled with his studies since I was proficient from my Notre Dame Academy education. Two years later we were married!”

NDCL’S MOCK TRIAL PROGRAM EXCELS IN AND OUT OF THE COURTROOM 2017 Nationals in Hartford,

Not even a pandemic can slow the momentum of NDCL’s high-achieving Mock Trial program. To Vicki Frabotta, NDCL’s Mock Trial Advisor, nothing can stand in their way of continued state and national success. “I’m so proud of the program’s success but it is the ultimate team achievement,” says the Notre Dame Academy graduate, now in her 29th year as a member of NDCL’s faculty. Frabotta is quick to point out that the program has grown in large part to the exceptional community members that lend a hand. “Early in the program, we were lucky to have Nick Giegerich as an attorney adviser help us since his son Harry Giegerich `15 was on the team. I knew then and there how important it is to have members from our alumni, parent, and local community play a special role in the growth of the program.” In particular, Nick Burling `01, Judge Deena Calabrese `89, Ryan Callender, Michelle DeBaltzo `88, Matt Lallo `02, Judge Carolyn Paschke, Judge Michael Shaughnessy, Judge Terri Stupica, and Marty Delahunty have all played special and important roles in the program’s success.

the “Legal Lions”. “I can’t stress enough how important ‘critical thinking’ is for our society, and the kids really develop that skill by being a part of this program,” says the father of NDCL graduates J.D. `17 and Jacqueline `16 Delahunty. Sometimes Frabotta sees an opportunity to improve the program in unpredictable ways. “A few years ago, our case centered around drones,” she recalls. “At school we happened to be taking an all-school photo at the stadium utilizing a drone, so I got in touch with the drone manufacturer after the photo shoot. A few weeks later, the manufacturer came to school to talk to the Mock Trial team about product background that really helped in our case. It was a perfect opportunity!” Frabotta routinely gathers feedback from other successful programs and their coaches to improve the NDCL Mock Trial performance for the next opportunity. “Sometimes I’m on the phone an hour with a coach of a team we lost to, figuring out what we can do better next time,” she says. “Each defeat I take as a chance to

improve our program and approach for the next time.”

GRADUATES TOUT SUCCESS OF MOCK TRIAL PROGRAM

Recent NDCL graduates that excelled in the Mock Trial program echo Frabotta and Delahunty’s assertions: the NDCL program is in the big leagues and paves the way for college and life success. Tom Fogarty `17 recalls trying out for Mock Trial simply to impress his dad. However, he found that law is turning into his life’s purpose. “Our team was full of excellent individuals, and that has an effect on you,” says the Ohio State University graduate now preparing for law school. “The Mock Trial program teaches you to stand for your beliefs and argument and not to cave to pressure. That speaks to integrity.” Being surrounded by other individuals who want the same thing you do is a key reason for the team’s competitive nature over the last several years. Team members become so immersed in the case and their role, it rubs off on other members of the team.

“When I started as a legal advisor a few years ago, the program was heavy in juniors and seniors, but now we’re seeing more and more freshmen every year,” says Delahunty, an attorney who serves as a key Mock Trial Coach for 4

“In 2018 when we were in Atlanta, the team spent 3 hours at a community outreach center,” Frabotta says. “They invited homeless members of the community for lunch and engaged with them, made them feel special.” The verdict is in--nearby or far, wherever these “Lions” roam, their success has no boundaries.

2021 Mock Trial team “I was a terrible public speaker before I joined the Mock Trial team,” says Antonia Mysyk `18, now a senior at Franciscan University of Steubenville. “That fear went away really fast and now my confidence is sky high.” In reflecting on the program’s recent success, Mysyk beams with pride on where the team is headed. “Looking back, we really worked our way up. We were an unknown team but now NDCL can compete with anyone.” Mysyk turned her Mock Trial experience into a summer internship with the Geauga County Common Pleas Court and plans to attend law school. “I can’t say enough about the internship experience!” Emily Callahan `20 has high hopes for NDCL’s Mock Trial teams going forward— winning nationals. “This program is totally

capable of winning nationals,” says the Northwestern University student. “We have the resources and the drive to do this. That is my greatest wish for the program.” Callahan didn’t plan on joining Mock Trial as a freshman, but it turned into a perfect fit. “During our run to states my junior year was when I fell in love with Mock Trial. The team was such a close community and when our season ended we were all so sad. It was over, we knew we were going to miss each other.”

It is easy to view the Mock Trial program into the lens of each and every one of NDCL’s five core values—Justice, Respect, Integrity, Community, and Excellence. The team’s performance isn’t limited to the walls of the courtroom or classroom, however.

Catholic Schools Week

SHINES ON CAMPUS

In a year unlike any other, Catholic Schools Week on our campus took on a new look yet still celebrated the wonderful opportunities and experiences our community is known for.

NDCL celebrated with a Spirit Week including

special lunch treats, a coin war among the grade levels, and a “virtual” pep rally. The coin war topped $5,000 in total collections that will be used to establish a Habitat for Humanity chapter.

NDES celebrations included a Hawaiian-themed

day including a Chick-fil-a lunch, movie and popcorn to go with the Hawaiian attire. In addition, students collected over 2,500 books for the United Way’s “Little Free Libraries” throughout Geauga County. Joins NDCL’s Athletic Department

NDCL welcomes Mr. Nick Carillon to its athletic department. Nick joined NDCL in November as Associate Athletic Director and jumped right in to an active and everchanging athletic season. Nick is a graduate from the University of Akron, majoring in sport management. Most recently, he was at Woodridge High School in Peninsula.

Ryan Hanzak The January/February 2021 issue of Northeast Walsh University Ohio Catholic magazine, published by the Diocese of Bowling Cleveland, featured a creative lesson from Ms. Rachel Barlage’s family and consumer science class. Students competed as teams to prepare a dish with a $5 budget and incorporate one “mystery” ingredient, all in just over an hour, similar to The Food Network’s popular show ‘Chopped’.

Volleyball, Cross Country, Golf teams excel in state playoffs

The boys golf team gets a “pandemic-version” clap out as they drive a lap around NDCL on their way to states.

Boys Golf ended the season in Columbus at the State Tournament. Finishing 8th overall, the team’s performance was led by senior Zander Gibson who finished as First Team AllOhio.

“Everyone showed up with their best game,” Gibson said of their time in Columbus. “Some guys had their best rounds of the year which really motivated each other. We lost a lot of experience from last year and didn’t know what to expect heading into 2020. Following a 2019 season in which the team made it to the regional semifinals, the team geared up for another deep postseason run from day one.

“It’s every girl’s dream to win a state championship,” says sophomore Caroline Jurevicius. “Even though it didn’t happen, the experience made all the hard work worth it.” Senior Hanna Bissler adds, “Losing such a close game was devastating, yet motivating at the same time. It shows the potential this team has going forward.”

Unfortunately, a mandatory COVID-19 quarantine for the boys team went into effect just as the team was preparing to leave for Columbus. “We have a phenomenal coaching staff that pushes us both mentally and physically,” says senior Mikey Welsh. “Our goal was to make it to states and we did. I’m proud of everybody.”

Two teams and three individuals were inducted into the

ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME in December.

The virtual format this year included interviews with team members and the individual inductees complete with photograph and video clips that highlighted their achievements. Thanks to our partners with the Cardamone Marketing Group, the 30-minute video production gave recognition to the outstanding team achievements and dedication that propelled these individuals to this honor. “We enjoyed the creative aspect of putting this production together,” says Keven Krajnak, Director of Advancement. “While a live event can’t be beat, the remote and in-person interviews of this year’s inductees were so much fun. The memories of specific plays and games that the inductees shared made me feel that we were there in that moment!”

was an exceptional swimmer for the Lions, capturing three school records and three Top 10 state finishes for the team during her 4 years at NDCL. Heather was named an All-American Academic by the National Interscholastic Coaches Association. An honor student and team captain, Heather embodies both the mental and physical demands great athletes possess.

was co-captain of the Latin basketball team that went 9-5 in a tough East Senate conference and notched a pair of playoff victories in 1963. Steve sported an accurate corner jumper and overcame a significant shoulder injury his senior year. At graduation, Steve was awarded the “Student Award” as the outstanding senior from his class.

Diane Kenney was a star athlete at Notre

Dame Academy, graduating in 1975. In an era before interscholastic sports were widely available to women, Diane excelled in NDA’s intramural program where classes competed against one another. Today she lives in Mexico Beach, Florida but looks back on her time at Notre Dame with warm memories.

1958 Cathedral Latin Football Team

The 1958 Cathedral Latin Football team went undefeated with a 10-0-1 record and captured the city championship with a 12-6 win over St. Ignatius on Thanksgiving Day. The Lions were ranked as high as #2 in state polls. While several members of the team are already in the Athletic Hall of Fame as individuals, this team accomplishment is memorable.

2009 NDCL Baseball Team

NDCL’s 2009 Baseball Team won the state championship by defeating Walsh Jesuit 2-1 in a game that got national attention for its competitive and close score. After defeating Canal Winchester in the state semi-final, the Lions turned to senior Erik Okleson to capture NDCL’s 2nd baseball championship in 9 years.
