Onward! That was the message from our recent launch event for Notre Dame Schools’ Capital Campaign Leading Transformation. I love that word. It demonstrates momentum, forwardness, movement. This is exactly the reality on our campus. Our enrollment is growing, especially in preschool and kindergarten. New faces in leadership are thriving in their roles, growing spiritually and in their work. When I assumed this role as Interim President, I knew we would get to this moment of sharing the Capital Campaign with the world. For over a year, we’ve been working with architects, feasibility studies, planners, interior designers, construction crews, and most of all—donors—to get to this point. I can’t believe we are finally here!

We’re at this moment for our students, but because of people like you. BOARD CHAIR Notre Dame Schools would like to welcome two new Board members this year, Chris Hart `01 and Constance (Melito `76) Eyman. They join 13 other individuals in serving our schools as members of the Board of Directors. We welcome them to this ministry of serving our students with their expertise, witness to mission and love of Catholic education. Last year, the Board said yes to Leading Transformation: The Campaign for Notre Dame Schools. It said yes because of the incredible planning, vision, and generosity that this community demonstrates year after year. It’s humbling and inspiring to see Cathedral Latin graduates and Notre Dame Academy graduates supporting this campaign in addition to NDCL grads, parents, grandparents and friends of the schools. THE CAMPAIGN FOR NOTRE DAME SCHOOLS MOVES CAMPUS ONWARD! $11.5 million Capital Campaign for NDCL, Notre Dame Elementary and Notre Dame Middle School already has over $9M in commitments In September, Notre Dame Schools announced Leading Transformation: The Campaign for Notre Dame Schools. The campaign, the first comprehensive campaign for both NDCL and Notre Dame Elementary and Notre Dame Middle School, was in a quiet phase since early 2022. Thanks to early investors, the campaign went public with over $9M in commitments.

“We are so grateful to our early investors. Their early gifts are allowing us move forward with providing our students with 21st century spaces in which to academically learn and grow, as well as much needed athletic training and game facilities.” -Dr. Jacqueline Hoynes The campaign priorities include athletic facilities, Notre Dame Middle School, science classroom renovation, endowment, and annual giving.

Athletic Facilities: $1 million

Building upon the school’s 2021 investment of permanent restrooms, concessions, spirit store and entry plaza at Lion Stadium, the campaign includes construction of a 1,400-seat home grandstand, press box and patio. In addition, the campaign includes the creation of a 4,500 square foot turfed, indoor athletic training space primarily for spring sports.

Notre Dame Middle School: $3.5 million Thanks to a gift of 25,000 square feet of space from the Sisters of Notre Dame and in conjunction with the master site planning process engaged by the Board of Directors, Notre Dame Middle School seeks to expand its footprint into the third floor of the existing building. The new wing will include 7 large classrooms including a STEM lab, and collaborative and creative space for grades 6 through 8. Notre Dame Middle School launched in the fall of 2022 and seeks to expand its enrollment up to 300 students and will occupy two floors in total once the renovation is complete.

Science Classrooms: $500,000

Science classrooms inspire innovation and investigation and invite students to create, excel and thrive in learning biology, chemistry, anatomy, physics, earth sciences, and other disciplines. The classrooms served well for nearly 60 years but should reflect the quality science program NDCL offers. The campaign includes top to bottom renovation of TWO of NDCL’s science classrooms and labs.

Endowment and Estate Planning: $5,000,000 A growing endowment is critical to ensure Notre Dame Schools’ foundation. Access and affordability to Catholic education stands at the center of our mission. Thanks to generous donors stewarded over the last few decades, nearly 70 named endowed funds are in place at NDCL and Notre Dame Elementary School. A portion of the earnings of these funds generate need-based tuition assistance awards for students and families seeking a Catholic education. Deferred gifts through estate planning often create substantial gifts to Notre Dame Schools. The campaign includes newly-declared estate commitments with an estimated cash value communicated by the donor. These commitments, often years away from maturity, will enhance the schools’ endowment value and be a lasting legacy gift.

Annual giving to the NDCL Fund, NDES Fund, and especially on Giving Day provides Notre Dame Schools with a predictable stream of unrestricted income for the greatest operating needs. Our community steps up every year with gifts at the Marian Society level ($1,000+) and Blue and Gold Society (up to $999) that, together, adds up to nearly $500,000 per year. The campaign includes three years of annual giving, from July 1, 2021 through June 30, 2024.

CAMPAIGN LAUNCH EVENT on SEPTEMBER 28th On September 28th, Leading Transformation: The Campaign for Notre Dame Schools was announced to the world with an incredible kickoff cocktail reception and celebration. Highlights of the evening included live jazz music, exquisite hors d’oeuvres, open bar, and a high level of energy and anticipation for the BIG announcement. An opening prayer by Sr. Kathleen Ryan, SND started the evening program, followed by a student welcome by Julia Petzing (8th grade) and Anthony Tibaldi (senior), remarks by Board Chair David Payne, and the campaign priorities by Interim President Dr. Jacqueline Hoynes. The event was emceed by Director of Advancement Keven Krajnak `98. The program culminated with a champagne toast announcing the $9.1 million already achieved towards the $11.5 million goal. Our alumni and student jazz ensemble provided a perfect setting. Thanks to Caden Basile '24, Adam Kuhar '13, Mason Ogint '24, Adam Pysell `05, Noah Weber '24, and Kenny Wolenski '22.

Dr. Michael Kellis caring for NDCL student-athletes for over 30 years From the beginning, Dr. Michael Kellis has been there for NDCL studentathletes. As the team’s Kellis, NDCL Principal Jodie medical doctor since the Ricci, Dr. Nikki Sarkisian `11 school’s founding, Kellis has seen the school grow from its early days to the Blue Ribbon School that it is today. His NDCL journey started with a call from the Sisters of Notre Dame. “I was a young doctor then, just getting started,” he says. “The Sisters suggested I talk to the team and Coach Dan Barren. I did a little of everything—I taped ankles, I was on the sideline, I was even the waterboy in those early years.” Kellis can’t say enough about his start with the program. At the time he was living down the street from campus on Butternut Road and he recalls the Saturday afternoon football games, a hotdog off the grill, then visiting the Sisters of Notre Dame afterwards. “They are family to me. The fall reminds me of having cider and hot dogs with the Sisters,” he says with a genuine smile. While Kellis’ work is primarily with the student-athletes, he gets to know the football coaches just as much. “Dan Barren (NDCL’s first football coach) was such a class individual. I had so much respect for the guy. He never challenged my work as a team doctor. He built this program from the ground up, and his son Mark continued that work which now shines today with Coach Baldesare.” His work and presence with the Lions inspired others to go into sports medicine or other careers in the medical field.

“Sophia Carroscia `23 shared with me that she is studying to be a nurse practitioner at Duquesne University, and I am so proud”, he says. Her dad (Nick Carroscia `92) was on NDCL’s first football team with Coach Barren. And now Nikki Sarkisian `11 is with me on the sidelines as a young doctor. These kids grow up and now to see them going into medical careers, that just makes me so happy for them and for this community.”

As he reflects on over 30 years of service to the Lions, it comes back to where it all started—faith in God and a loving respect for the Sisters of Notre Dame.

Last year one NDCL chapter closed for Kellis—that of an NDCL parent. Mike and Debbie’s triplets (John, Marysa, and Adam) graduated from NDCL in 2023. He was quick to point out that the Kellis triplets followed the graduation of the Mullin girls in 2019 (Hailey, Hannah, and Jenna).

“Before she passed away, Sr. Mary Roman, SND gave me a signed football,” he says. “That made my day. She was such a special person. Thinking back 30 years, seeing the Sisters attend our games at NDCL, at Newbury, West Geauga, wherever we were, was such an amazing experience for me. And I know for the students, too.”

“NDCL prepared them so well for college,” Kellis says. “John was an active student leader, even at football games. One game I hear a ‘Doc-tor Kel-lis’ cheer coming from the student section and there’s John leading it. As a parent the last four years, it brought a new perspective to me as I got to know these kids as friends of the Kellis kids and bright young men and women. But the run of NDCL triplets is over for now.”

One tradition that hasn’t changed in 30 years— and before that at Cathedral Latin—is the football team praying in front of the Mary statue on campus. Today that group has grown to include cheerleaders, marching band, students, teachers, and parents. To Kellis, that moment is very special and personal. “As a young doctor, I remember standing there with the team and some of the Sisters. It was a special moment in a special place. I said to myself then ‘If I ever have kids, they are going to this place’. This school, this community, it’s filled with good kids and good families. That means so much to me.” Kellis adds in closing, “All of the work that I have done at NDCL would not have been possible without the help of my friend and partner, Dr. Greg Sarkisian who was here when I couldn’t be here and protecting our kids. In addition, Dr. Steve Takacs was here as well with his support and expertise, God rest his soul.”

success story

budding in Chagrin Falls

NDCL grad Megan (Albright `11) Moran fosters creative environment with new recording studio catering to moms. Megan (Albright `11) Moran has found another niche in Chagrin Falls. The NDCL graduate and “MOMpreneuer” owns a creative space right in the heart of Chagrin Falls called Mompreneur Co.

“I’m a third generation MOMpreneuer. I saw how my mom could be there to pick me up from volleyball practice at NDCL yet still run a business. I knew early on that I wanted to be like that.”

“I’ve always been a creative person even in high school,” she says. “As a student at NDCL I started a personal styling business, started a blog (before they were common) and styling business. Then after the pandemic, I pivoted and got into podcasting. It took off, and I knew I had to reach higher.”

Her studio is a cozy, 1,800 square-foot space that has three different spaces, each uniquely theme. The business focuses on mom entrepreneurs recording podcasts, sometimes multiple episodes in a single session. While her kids come to the studio sometimes, clients come kid-free to get their work done.

Key to her inspiration is wanting to be present for her young family. Married to Collin, the couple has two children, Jack (4) and Sophia (3). Now she can share that family/work balance with studio clients seeking the same “presence” with their families.

Not only does her studio support podcasting but her company also helps business owners create authentic marketing content in a unique and creative way. Using their Signature Founder Interview Style, Megan and her team curate stand out video and images that spotlight these talented entrepreneurs in the Cleveland area.

“Sometimes changemakers just can’t articulate themselves in a way we can do it for them,” she says. “We can produce beautiful materials for their business, and let the owner shine.” Moran counts her time at NDCL as a blessing and special to her life. She credits Ms. Zita Knific as a welcoming and encouraging inspiration. Her NDCL friends are now “aunts” to her kids. As one of the first Kairos retreat leaders at NDCL, Moran credits NDCL’s commitment to leadership development for getting her to this point in her life. She encourages young people to believe that they can do anything or be anything they want to in a career—even if it means changing their mind. “People can pivot. My son wants to be a firefighter, a policeman, a UPS driver, all at once. I love it! Have the conviction and the courage to go after what you want in life.” Megan’s business was recently featured in Crain’s Cleveland Business, Cleveland Magazine, and Fox 8 WJW TV. Congratulations!

A Crowning Achievement for

Alexandra Manfroni `16 Head Lacrosse Coach achieves Conference Coach of the Year in debut season at the helm

Kaylee Daley recognized as Nation Merit Semi-Finalist Three additional students named commended students

Reigning Crown Conference Coach of the Year Alexandra Manfroni didn’t wait very long to make an impact on NDCL’s girls lacrosse program. The first-year head coach achieved the conference’s top honor in leading the Lions to one of the young program’s best seasons ever including an 8-1 start during last spring’s season. Junior Grace Hinkel smashed Manfroni’s NDCL school record (49) with 66 goals in a season. “It’s extremely rewarding to come back here and lead this program,” Manfroni says. “As a student at NDCL, it was always a goal of mine to come back here and leave a legacy. I’ve found that with our lacrosse program.” As a student, Manfroni was a member of NDCL’s early girls lacrosse teams complete with the “new turf” at Lion Stadium. “Barely enough girls to have a program,” she recalls of those early years. “Now, we have over 70 girls interested in lacrosse this coming spring. Our growth mirrors that of the sport in NE Ohio. We’re seeing more girls have interest but also experience in playing the sport. It’s a bright future.” A Miami University graduate, Manfroni mentors the student-athletes and expects they will take lessons learned on the field to college and throughout their lives. Lessons like teamwork and leadership.

“I emphasize leadership development to the girls,” she says. “To see them grow as young women on and off the field, it is such a fulfilling experience for me.”

Congratulations to senior Kaylee Daley who is a semifinalist in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition that includes student recognition and college scholarships. Kaylee’s other impressive accomplishments include: •

Kaylee is the daughter of Chris and Bridget (Fox `98) Daley and plans on studying Aeronautical Engineering at her first choice, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York. In addition, three seniors were named commended scholars: Mac Rottinghaus, Dylan White, and Audrey Brlecic. Congratulations to these students for incredible academic achievements!

Joseph Stolarik `23 Eagle Scout impacts NDCL’s Labre ministry Recent graduate Joseph Stolarik achieved Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America. As part of his journey from Cub Scout to Boy Scout, he developed a love of outdoors and fellowship. Along his journey to Eagle Scout, he held the titles of Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Librarian, Den Chief, Troop Guide, and Scribe. Joseph spent 100 nights of camping, 150 miles of hiking on the Appalachian Trail, and learned valuable survival and life skills along the way. He always wanted to participate with NDCL’s Labre Ministry, yet recurring scout meetings every Tuesday prevented him from participating. With some guidance from his father and project coach, Joseph designed four crates with would replace the totes originally used to collect donations like food and personal care items. Over 30 people helped complete the project and approximately 400 man-hours were spent completing it. Now, NDCL’s Labre ministry benefits from Joseph’s creativity and hard work! Currently, Joseph is attending Cleveland State University studying Mechanical Engineering.

Elective courses allow Notre Dame Middle Schoolers to Discover Talents and Pursue Passions Middle school is a time of continuous growth. Notre Dame Middle School continues to engage its students in the core subjects of English, Math, Social Studies and Science. In addition, the students take Art, Music, STEM, Foreign Language and Physical Education. Administrators and teachers developed a list of quarterly elective offerings which will engage the students in further learning of required subjects. Examples include Financial Literacy, Military History, Amazing Animals and Journeying Through Space, Vocabulary Builder, Speak Up, and Talking to God. Offering a variety of electives provides a comfortable space for students to explore new areas of interest. Drama, Debate, Newspaper, and Book Club are some examples. To encourage exploration in the arts, the school offers Orchestra and Visual Arts Exploration. The Spanish elective, Exploring Hispanic Culture Through Food and Music, expands upon the language requirement to raise cultural awareness. Part of the vision of Notre Dame Elementary and Middle School is to “focus on loving, respecting, and educating all to discover and develop their God-given talents.” This vision is carried out by offering electives in various areas. Elective courses offer the opportunity for our children to discover their talents and possibly pursue these passions in the future.

joins Advancement Office “It’s wonderful to be part of a team that cares so much for our students and our schools.” In August, Notre Dame Schools welcomed Courtney (Rice `98) Bacik as its new Annual Giving Coordinator. She’s a familiar face around campus—NDCL graduate from the class of 1998, mom to Brandon (grade 7) and Liam (grade 4), and periodic substitute at Notre Dame Elementary School.

“I love this place—the people, the campus, the community. I loved it as a student, as a mom, and now the people I get to call colleagues are wonderful and focused on the mission which is our students,” she says. “Walking through the halls, everyone is smiling. Students, teachers, administrators. This is a place of joy and I love being able to share my professional talents here. It’s wonderful to be part of a team that cares so much for our students and our schools.” Bacik worked in multiple sales and marketing leadership roles prior to joining the staff at Notre Dame School and is trained under both the Dale Carnegie and Sandler Sales Training strategies. Since August, Bacik has been working to make Giving Day 2023 a huge success, in addition to meeting Cathedral Latin, Notre Dame Academy, and NDCL graduates in the area. “I love the rich histories our schools have. In my first week, I got to see the Cathedral Latin arch and a tour of the former Notre Dame Academy in University Circle. What an amazing legacy those schools gave us!” 2022-2023 ANNUAL REPORT

NEWS AND NOTES FROM CAMPUS 168 Members of Freshman Class recognized in Induction Ceremony on campus 168 members of the class of 2027 accepted their role in advancing NDCL’s mission and core values during the Freshman Induction Ceremony at the Regina Mundi Chapel at the Notre Dame Education Center in September. In her remarks to the class of 2027, NDCL Principal Mrs. Jodie Ricci reminded the community that “God has a plan for each one of us and HIS plan is greater than anything we could ever imagine.”

Mystery behind Homecoming Tuffy disappearance SOLVED NDCL celebrated Homecoming Week 2023 with a “CLUE”-themed week. A highlight of the theme included a weeklong faux-mystery of who “lion-napped” our mascot, Tuffy. At the Friday pep rally, students interrogated potential suspects including a number of teachers. The goodnatured “investigation” turned out that the perpetrator was longtime NDCL receptionist Mrs. Kathy Hurt who fessed up to the “crime”.

NDCL visits Ansel Road In August, new Annual Giving Coordinator Courtney (Rice `98) Bacik visited the former Notre Dame Academy on Ansel Road in Cleveland. Accompanied by Director of Advancement Keven Krajnak `98, they toured three floors of the immaculate building that was the home of Notre Dame Academy until it moved to Geauga County in the early 1960s. “As an NDCL graduate and current staff member, I was fortunate to experience the history of our beginnings and to see where some of our traditions and legacies first began,” Bacik said. “It was inspiring to learn that the site continues to live on with a mission to improve the quality of life in greater Cleveland.” Sister Carol Brandt, SND spent time with Bacik and Krajnak on their visit, sharing a bit of the history of the building and the mission of Famicos Foundation, which operates out of the Ansel Road building. The Foundation’s mission is to improve the quality of life in greater Cleveland through neighborhood revitalization, affordable housing and integrated social services.

Pleasant temperatures and sunny skies greeted a record 172 golfers at Fowler’s Mill Golf Course August 28th for the Lions Golf Classic. The fundraising outing for NDCL and Notre Dame Elementary and Middle School raised close to $38,000, a new high! TITLE SPONSOR

The Golden Chalice

OF CATHEDRAL LATIN SCHOOL Bishop Neal J. Buckon `71 shares insight to this most special and sacred vessel ends of the cross to signify his wounds. The presence of uniformed United States Service Members makes the golden chalice extraordinary. Three Service Men form the stem of the chalice. Each Service Man is wearing a different uniform, the uniforms of the military services that existed in the early 1940’s: Army, Navy, and Marines.

During the early 1940’s, Father A. J. Bedel, S.M., was the Principal of Cathedral Latin School. Since World War II was being waged, and a number of Latin graduates had already made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, he was prompted to create a suitable memorial to honor the dead. Father Bedel enlisted the support of Gold Star Mothers, Blue Star Mothers, and graduates. They decided to commission the crafting of a special golden chalice to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice of Cathedral Latin graduates and to bring down blessings of God’s love and grace on the living. The Chalice of Remembrance would be used to celebrate Mass in the school chapel. The response was so overwhelming that the golden chalice was enhanced by a cross encrusted with jewels. The one diamond is in the center of the cross and represents the heart of Jesus Christ. The four red rubies are placed on the 18

The CLS Senior Class of 1947 raised sufficient funds to erect a plaque honoring Latin’s war dead. There are 92 men of Cathedral Latin who made the supreme sacrifice in World War II. Since its re-dedication in 2017, the plaque is located in a prominent location inside Notre Dame - Cathedral Latin School. The beautiful golden chalice was used at CLS until its closing in 1979. It is now used for special Masses and celebrations, including NDCL Baccalaureate Mass. Bishop Neal J. Buckon celebrated Mass and used the Golden Chalice on two occasions recently, including his own 70th birthday and 40th anniversary with the US Armed Forces. The Golden Chalice is a sacred vessel used to hold the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ as we celebrate his passion, death, and resurrection. It is also used to remember the service, sacrifice, and valor of some of his stouthearted young disciples.

2019: Dominic Mann married Cassidy on July 29th at St. Helen’s Church in Newbury, OH. The couple recently started a non-profit Catholic Ministry called Stomp the Serpent, a Catholic ministry that inspires people to follow God’s divine plan on a secular battlefield. Dominic’s video production company, DM Productions, has officially chosen to serve Catholic organizations. The tagline is: “Amplifying Catholic influence through elite videos”.

On September 1st, NDES 4th grader Owen Effner threw the ceremonious first pitch at the Cleveland Guardians game. What an experience!

6th Grade STEM goes up in the air, round and round NDES Second graders explore the natural wonders of campus Without a doubt the 400+ acre campus is a blank canvas of exploration, learning, and inspiration for NDES students. Second graders are learning what it means to love and appreciate God’s creation in nature. Thanks to Sr. Barbara Soplata, SND and 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Lindsay Montague, the young learners recently “got their hands dirty” in learning about plant and insect life on campus and beyond. In the outdoor classroom just beyond the walls of NDES, Sr. Barbara had the students plant daffodil bulbs and mark the location of their bulb with a special stone. Then in spring, the students will (hopefully) see new life emerge from the still-snow covered ground. “God is the giver of all gifts,” Montague says. “This is the first chapter 2nd graders learn in religion. I am hopeful that they see more than a green shoot coming out of snow, but that they connect to nature and to God as creator.”

Students use STEM concepts to design, build and test ferris wheel models Euclid Beach. Geauga Lake. Cedar Point. These places of joy and amusement (some no longer around) all had a ferris wheel that gave riders a glimpse over the treetops and away from the hustle and bustle of the midway. For students in Mrs. Sheryl (Smith `97) Bacher’s 6th grade STEM class at Notre Dame Middle School, they applied the design, build, and engineering of a ferris wheel in their classroom.

Indoors, Sr. Barbara raised 100 monarch butterflies and shared with the students the journey of life from caterpillar to chrysalis to their beautiful flight as butterflies.

“We did this project around the time of the Geauga County Fair, and it was a way to introduce the 4 C’s to my students—creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration,” Bacher says proudly. “In STEM, there is more than one way to do a project. With the ferris wheel, the students understood the axis on which it spins on plus the symmetry that two wheels ensure as it spins.”

“The kids are dialed in seeing this transformation from caterpillar to butterfly,” Montague says. “They’re enamored seeing them in the jars, hearing updates on how they are doing. Sr. Barbara really captivates them.”

Students used popsicle sticks, hot glue, and dowel rods during the “build” phase of the project. After completion, students evaluated each other’s ferris wheel and offered feedback to the design/builder. “I was proud to see how well my students accepted feedback from their peers,” Bacher said.

In her 10 years at NDES, Montague sees firsthand the special relationship students have with the Sisters of Notre Dame. “The Sisters are special to me and for my class,” she says. “Sr. Judy Ostrowski is our prayer partner and Sr. Judy Bucco talks to the students about the sacraments. Sr. Barbara Knuff offers time in the middle school chapel to pray with her, and she has always been a welcoming presence for me since I participated in the SND Charism experience. Their presence in our school enriches my own faith as well.”

Her role as a STEM teacher is preparing 11 and 12 year olds for careers and jobs that don’t yet exist and competing against people from all over the world. “I see myself as inspiring these students that they can make a difference in our world. Through STEM or another path. Nothing is impossible!” Bacher is in her second year at Notre Dame, but she isn’t a stranger to campus. The 1997 NDCL graduate didn’t always picture herself back on campus as an educator. “This place just feels right to me,” she says. “I can do what I love, grow in my faith, and helps kids grow in their faith too.” 2022-2023 ANNUAL REPORT
