PRESIDENT Dear Families, Alumni, and Friends of Notre Dame Schools, In this annual report, I hope you witness the goodness, the momentum, the strength, and the many blessings 2020-21 brought to our students and campus. With dedicated stewardship of resources and by the generosity of so many, we celebrate a year in which we accomplished much. First and foremost, our schools have been safely in-person this past year and we continue to prioritize this experience for our students. To do this, we have augmented our staffing across campus, navigated the many guidelines from government and health authorities, and challenged our students to prioritize one of our five core values – COMMUNITY. What we have witnessed in our world is a tendency to blame, to shame, to fragment human capacity for understanding. On our campus, we strive to do otherwise. We strive to connect one another through our Catholic faith and common purpose. We are a college prep campus of dedicated and talented faculty in partnership with parents and students achieving academic excellence. With integrity and with a focus on justice, we enlarge our hearts to consider a broader world. We educate leaders who transform the world, as Jesus did, by living the truth in love. In this edition, we hope you glimpse the many people who make our mission thrive. 2020-2021 ANNUAL REPORT

Shepherding the land and resources is a calling for Christina Znidarsic `99 NDCL graduate steering campus stream restoration project Spanning 450 acres, the Notre Dame campus encompasses about every natural resource and topography imaginable—hills, forest, streams, ponds, and wetlands. Volcanoes? Not so much. “I had fantasies of being a volcanologist, of working out west,” proclaims NDCL alumnus Christina Znidarsic `99. “After moving back to NE Ohio after college, however, I needed to broaden my scope. Volcanoes and Ohio generally don’t go together, but there’s lots of other opportunities out there! Urban ecology and in particular wetland ecology in grad school at Cleveland State got me hooked on what I am doing now.” Znidarsic is a project manager with Davey Resource Group, the firm contracted to address stream restoration and erosion control on campus just north of Lion Stadium. The project is a partnership between the Sisters of Notre Dame, Notre Dame Schools, Chagrin River Watershed Partners, and local, state, and federal agencies. The end result will solve erosion issues encroaching on the property as well as improving water quality of the Chagrin River and Lake Erie downstream.

“I am so excited to be part of this project,” she says. “It is deeply personal to me and very emotional to be back on campus with so many good memories. NDCL taught me critical thinking skills and that the world around us is so much bigger than just the campus. Mrs. Knific opened my mind to creative analysis and effective communication. Mr. Scott’s economics and history classes taught us to think about things on a global scale. The teachers and education I received helped shape me into a global thinker, to consider our impact on the planet and its resources.”

After graduating NDCL in 1999, Znidarsic went on to William & Mary and majored in geology. After starting her college years studying anthropology, she made the switch to geology almost by accident.

“We aim to work with Mother Nature rather than against her. By mimicking natural stream processes and adding native vegetation, rock and grade-control structures, we’ll be able to prevent further downcuttingg and allow the stream to access a natural floodplain. This his will slow the force of the flow, settle out sediment, andd stabilize the channel. The result will be a more natural restoration that protects Lion Stadium and provides long-term water quality benefits to the Chagrin River and ultimately Lake Erie.”

“Anthropology wasn’t for me, and the geology building happened to be next door,” she says. “I took some classes and I fell in love. How those ancient processes affect the things we do today inspires me. In NE Ohio, many of the roadways we are familiar with (Mentor Avenue for example) were laid out on the beach ridges formed by ancient Great Lakes shorelines. So many

News and Notes from Campus Jurevicius named to USA Volleyball U18 team

Lions win Chipotle “Team Meal Challenge” Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns and Chipotle joined forces to award five high school teams in NE Ohio with a free meal each week for 15 weeks. NDCL was one of the winners and will share the prize with our Labre Ministry in feeding homeless men, women, and children they serve each Tuesday. Special thanks to Dom Mann `19 for filming and editing the winning video of our “All-NDCL team”.

Believe in Ohio Nine seniors were recognized by the Believe in Ohio, a statewide STEM and entrepreneurship program centered around commercialization and marketability of science projects. The award is sponsored by the Ohio Academy of Science. •

Gabe Brkic `18 ties NCAA record University of Oklahoma Sooners kicker Gabe Brkic `18 tied an NCAA record in September with three 50+ yard field goals in one game. The Sooners, one of the top football teams in the country, compete in the Big 12 conference in the NCAA. Brkic is a two-time Lou Groza Award semi-finalist, which honors the top kicker in the nation!

Period.” -Christopher Tartara ‘95 Driving 45 minutes each way from Richmond Heights to NDCL, Christopher Tartara ’95 never took for granted the sacrifices his parents made to ensure that he had an excellent educational experience. To this day, his love for his school is passionate, committed, and full of joyful pride. Still close with so many of his teammates and classmates, Chris stays in touch with the progress of the school remembering fondly when he, his dad and teammates hand built the JV baseball field. When asked by Dr. Bates how he thinks back on his time at NDCL, Chris shares emphatically “NDCL prepared me to succeed. Period.” Still ready to take the field for the Notre DameCathedral Latin Lions, Chris proudly wears the Lions throwback jersey as one of NDCL’s #1 fans as he and Dr. Bates grab dinner at one of Chris’ most proud franchise investments, Happy Camper, in Chicago.

Remembering Bishop Anthony M. Pilla `51 1932 – 2021 Notre Dame Schools mourns the passing of Bishop Anthony M. Pilla, who passed away in September. Pilla attended Cathedral Latin School his freshman year before going into the seminary. He later served as the Bishop for the Diocese of Cleveland from 1981 – 2006. During Pilla’s tenure, the affiliation between the Cathedral Latin Alumni Association and Notre Dame Academy came to fruition, creating NDCL as we know it today.

• Academically, NDCL was the only high school in the WORLD to receive the 2021 Blackbaud Catalyst Award for teaching and learning. This award recognizes persons and institutions that have adopted flexible, distance, and online delivery models to positively impact the educational experience. • The NDCL Labre program, which serves meals to those experiencing homelessness or severe poverty, did not miss one week over the last two years, serving over 3875 meals. • With careful stewardship of resources, we invested in the campus facilities and programs: • Adding permanent restrooms, concessions, spirit store to Lion Stadium • Brightening classrooms with new LED lights throughout campus • Renovating the first floor of NDES for grades K-2 • Investing in a new K-8 reading and writing curriculum to better prepare students

Endowment Spotlight THE CATHERINE CONWAY `48 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP Colleen (Conway) Cooney reflects on what it means to have her family’s name associated with NDCL. A lifelong proponent of Catholic education in NE Ohio, Cooney continues to build the endowment fund through annual gifts and a deferred estate gift. “My dad, James P. Conway, always said ‘Endowment is the bedrock of quality institutions.’ He was so committed to his job as a fundraiser that his license plate said “ENDOW”. When Regina High School closed in 2010, he transferred the scholarship to NDCL. My family named it after my mom since she was a 1948 graduate of Notre Dame Academy. Like the Holy Family, we are called to the needs of others in growing our own faith in God’s goodness. Many of us are blessed with good fortune and good health.
