We have taken responsible steps to ensure that tuition is affordable for families and ample resources are secured to provide financial assistance when needed.

We secured Payroll Protection Plan (PPP) funding through the Small Business Administration to provide needed resource to keep our faculty and staff fully employed last spring.

God bless you all. I continue to hold each of you and your families in my thoughts and prayers.

We have grown the facilities staff to include 10 staff members attending to the increased sanitizing and custodial, setup, repair, and improvement needs of the campus.

•

We have contracted with a technology firm to ensure that our network and IT systems are secure and integrated throughout campus.

•

We painted McGarry Gym, updated signage, and have added a new sound and projection system and a streaming live-feed camera.

•

We have secured a more cost-effective and faster internet solution for both Notre Dame- Cathedral Latin and Notre Dame Elementary Schools.

•

We added 40 port-a-cools to NDCL classrooms and upgraded the electrical infrastructure to support this addition.

•

We upgraded our key fob and card access system for added security campus wide.

•

We enhanced our phone service to prevent future and frequent outages like what we have experienced these past years.

•

We have begun the replacement of roofing at NDCL and will continue doing so over the next 3 years.

•

We have contracted with a water quality and waste water testing firm to improve our systems on campus.

•

We have improved the drainage on the back practice fields in conjunction with the SND staff to prevent further erosion and perpetually muddy fields.

•

We are in a joint project with the Ohio EPA to mitigate flood and erosion damage north of Lion Stadium.

Outside my office window, there is a beautiful red maple tree which has inspired me countless times. This fall, this tree has carefully and slowly changed to evidence brilliant hues of gold, orange, green, and red. It is a daily inspiration for me in my work on this campus these past 3 ½ years. In any season, each of us is constantly growing and adapting to the life before us. The light shining forth from the eyes of each of our students reveals the hope and promise of our schools. We wanted to share this hope with you through our cover of the magazine; each child is created in the image of God and each of our students reveals this love and God-given potential. As the light in their eyes shines light into our classrooms and hallways, so too do we thank you for your continued support empowering us to bring even greater brightness to our campus and world. I bear hope that through education we can continue to create a world that is more just. I believe and hope in Dr. King’s wisdom, that “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” In moments such as our current political environment, it is difficult to see this.I recognize that there is always another student, another classroom, another school in need of great teachers to ensure students are raised with a paradigm guided by facts, truth, faith, humor, and love. I am grateful to serve with colleagues who prize learning and developing future leaders. Teaching is an art and our world needs more teaching artists. I became a teacher because I loved teaching and the experience of school. I worked after school as a cross country coach and helped with campus ministry, retreats, and student government. I became an assistant principal and, after completing my doctorate in educational leadership, have served as a head of school or president since. In total, I have worked in Catholic schools for over 26 years. In each step, I said yes to greater responsibility because I valued the enterprise of education and wanted to have a larger role in helping to shape it. My role, working with our Board of Directors, is to ensure that our mission thrives and that our schools have the resources to do so. I am thankful that our community of alumni, parents, and supporters are so generous to our students and schools. Particularly in this time of the pandemic, ensuring that Catholic education is affordable depends greatly upon our ability to build an endowment and to raise funds necessary for tuition assistance for families in need. I work closely with our school principals who co-create dynamic learning opportunities with our faculty for in-person classes for our students, and for virtual learning when necessary. As I look back on our 2019-20 school year, I recognize that our 1100 students entrusted to our care witness to a community which is responsive with love, energized by faith, and blessed in so many ways. I write this knowing full well that the pandemic has changed life, school, and work for everyone of us. Despite this fundamental change in our daily lives, I am thankful for our community which rallied together through the spring and does to this day to ensure that our Notre Dame Schools continue to “educate leaders who transform the world, as Jesus did, by living the truth in love.” I want you to know that we have safely and successfully reopened the schools as of August 17th ! 95% of the high school students and 90% of our elementary school students chose in-person learning and, but for a few instances of quarantine, we have remained open. We are wearing face masks, taking temperatures, washing hands, and we have upgraded our infrastructure and staff on campus to accommodate the necessary and added precautions, including the following:

On November 19, 2020, we will host our annual Giving Day, asking our community and alumni to help us improve our campus further. We have solicited bids to replace over 1000 light fixtures campus wide with LED in classrooms, hallways, gymnasiums, and offices. Our goal is to Bring the Light to campus with this endeavor and with others to be announced with Giving Day. If you would like to help me with this endeavor, please let me know. I value greatly your participation in our efforts to improve our schools. As always, I thank you for the many ways you make possible the success of our schools, our classrooms, and, most importantly, of our students. May you continue to be safe and well, and may you continue to know readily the blessings of our Good and Provident God.

Reopening Notre Dame Schools “NDCL's mission is to educate leaders, not followers. And I'm counting on you to step up to lead our community through this pandemic. It's not something that I or even all the adults together can do by ourselves," Mr. Waler challenged the students. "If we have any chance of continuing inperson teaching and learning, all of us need to take the lead.” Principal, Joseph A. Waler For the past several months, we have been researching, consulting, and collaborating to develop a plan to support the re-opening of our schools in the midst of the pandemic following March’s sudden shutdown. Our goal throughout this planning and return to school this fall has been to ensure that we open school as safely and as practically as possible. The guidelines contained in our reopening plan reflect our efforts to apply the best information available to us from Ohio Department of Education, the Centers for Disease Control, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and other experts. In developing this document, we recognize the opportunity

and challenge entrusted to us by Governor Mike DeWine to make informed decisions to meet the needs of our school community. We are blessed by a strong, vibrant school community and we are all in this together. As we respond to the challenges of the pandemic, we will depend upon and deepen our experience of our core value of community as we: • keep everyone safe by developing, communicating, and expecting cooperation with specific protocols to mitigate exposure to COVID-19 • work together to support the well-being of our students and staff spiritually, academically, socially, emotionally, and physically • resume in-person teaching and learning five days per week according to the previously published academic calendar unless health authorities dictate otherwise •

In 2020-21, we welcome Dr. Jacqueline Hoynes As the next principal of Notre Dame Elementary. Dr. Hoynes brings more than 45 years in education and educational leadership to this role. She earned a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Kent State University, a Master’s Degree in Education from Cleveland State University, and a Bachelor’s Degree in science, also from Kent State. Dr. Hoynes has served as the superintendent of Mentor City Schools (2003-2012), of Newbury Schools (2018-2020), and has served twice as an elementary school principal and once as a junior high school principal. She began her educational career as a 6th grade teacher and intervention specialist. She has been an instructor and mentor for aspiring principals as well as the director for school improvement for Akron Public Schools. Dr. Hoynes has always kept the learning experience of students at the core of her decisions in the classroom and in leading schools and school districts. “My husband and two sons are graduates of the Notre Dame Schools, and I am grateful for this chance to help our youngest students identify their God-given talents, nurture success and begin to establish and cultivate a sense of spiritual maturity. With a heartfelt sense of homecoming, I am truly excited to lead this exceptional Catholic school.” Dr. Hoynes is a devoted Catholic and a dedicated parishioner at St. Mary’s Mentor. She and her husband, Paul, are the proud parents of two boys. Paul is a 1969 graduate of Cathedral

Latin and has been the beat writer for the Cleveland Indians for over 40 years, currently writing for Cleveland.com. Their sons attended and graduated from St. Mary’s School and NDCL, before pursuing their college studies and careers. We welcome Dr. Hoynes, as well as her family, to our campus this fall. We are grateful for her leadership, partnering with faculty, staff, and parents to ensure a vibrant re-opening of Notre Dame Elementary School.

A Generous Gift to Notre Dame Elementary Reveals a Treasured Family Legacy

provided the basis of the family’s gift to Notre Dame. This P-47 did not actually serve in the war, but was on the production line when the war ended in September 1945. Sister Barbara, and her siblings Rita, Margaret, Wally, and Mary, grew up in nearby Newbury, Ohio and were the children of Walter and Peggy Soplata. A family who prided themselves on hard work, faith, and generosity was led by their dad, Walter, who spent an entire lifetime collecting old airplanes. For almost 50 years, the only plane that was sold was Walter’s American Eagle biplane, to purchase the wedding ring for his adored wife, Peggy. After WWII, Walter used hardwood from airplane crates to build the family home, nestled on 17 acres in Newbury. Sister Barbara and her siblings learned how to nail roof shingles and work with wrenches. They loved the outdoors. As their family grew, so did the plane collection. On Sunday afternoons, after Church, visitors and veterans would come and visit all afternoon. Walter would open up all the planes and let veterans and visitors sit in the cockpits and check out the engines and parts of the planes. Sister Barbara Soplata, a teacher at NDES, fondly recalls wonderful memories of the plane collection that has led to the donation to establish the outdoor classroom

otre Dame Elementary School was recently the benefactor of a substantial gift by the Soplata, Kraus, Murray, Braford and Mitch families, one which reflects the love they have for our beloved elementary school and also an outward demonstration of their family’s unique heritage in our community. Their family’s $10,000 donation helps to create an outdoor classroom, a valuable outdoor learning opportunity for our elementary students, that will prove increasingly useful given the realities of the current educational environment. The connection between the family’s generous donation, and Notre Dame, rests upon the career of Sister Mary Barbara Soplata, SND, an elementary instructor in our school since 1983, and her father’s lifelong vintage collection of World War II and early Jet Age era airplanes. The most recent airplane of the Walter Soplata collection to be sold and placed in a museum was a P-47 Thunderbolt. The proceeds of this sale

Though the Sunday gatherings at the Soplata home happened decades ago, the hands-on experience is remembered to this day. According to Sister Barbara, “Unlike a museum where one could only view an artifact, my father desired a deeper experience for families of veterans and the community and allowed visitors to climb in and through the planes he collected.” Such fond and meaningful memories evoked a strong desire to continue the legacy of Walter Soplata’s plane collection in a variety of ways. After 50 years of collecting planes, Walter felt it was time to begin to place them in museums and get them out of the harsh Ohio winters. He sold six planes at the time of his retirement. Some of that money was used for charitable causes. Before Walter died in 2010, he asked that any further “plane money” would be used to care for the love of his life, his wife Peggy. She passed away in 2017 and a few months

Sister Barbara and the rest of her siblings have continued to find good homes for their dad’s planes. Two have been restored for flying and the XP-82 Double Mustang was given the Grand Champion Post-World War II Award at the Oshkosh airshow last year. With the Soplata family’s love of the country and nature, they felt that the donation would honor the memory of their parents, grandparents, and sister. “The trails are wonderful on our campus and inspire our students and staff to learn about the outdoors,” continues Sister Barbara, “just as we were inspired by our mother and father, who were both lovers of airplanes and nature years ago.” Sister Barbara has served as an art teacher, reading and enrichment instructor for students in kindergarten through 4th grade during her tenure. With a teaching career that began in 1974, she remains energized to this day by the same emotion that inspired her career, then: the joy she experiences when children come to understand concepts, when the light bulb turns on. “Sister Barbara is a model for our students and our staff,” says Dr. Jacqueline Hoynes, Principal of Notre Dame Elementary School. “We are deeply grateful for the Soplata, Kraus, Murray, Braford, and Mitch gift.”

placed at St. Boniface Parish in Cleveland, Ohio. A few years ago, their grandson, Mr. Fred Buettner, a longtime employee of Notre Dame, helped to bring it here to our campus. This beautiful Mary statue honors Mr. Fred Buettner’s mother, his two aunts, Notre Dame Sisters Mary Clarita and Mary Anne Schreiner and his two children, Brian and Anna Buettner, who attended Notre Dame Elementary School.

Campus Minister Halle McKeon beams with pride describing her first year and a half serving in her role at NDCL. Much of her pride stems from growing NDCL’s Labre ministry as part of the active Campus Ministry program.

McKeon grew up in Catholic schools—from St. Barnabas Elementary School to Walsh Jesuit High School and later the University of Dayton. After teaching at Colerain High School near Cincinnati, the NE Ohio native landed at NDCL teaching world history. As a teacher, McKeon volunteered with the campus ministry program and in 2019 transitioned into her current role. “I realized that I can bring my enthusiasm for service to this program,” she says. “It fulfills me to help other people.”

Rev. James Caddy “Fr. Caddy” CHAPLAIN, NDCL

Serving as NDCL’s first chaplain since 2014, Rev. James Caddy “Fr. Caddy” says that his work with teenagers keeps him young. “I find teenagers to be very loveable people,” Caddy says. “You see them at a deeper level. I find it rewarding to be among them. Their struggles are honest but I see so much goodness.” Caddy has long been a fixture on NDCL’s campus. At first as a regular celebrant of school Masses, then after his retirement as pastor of St. Francis of Assisi in Gates Mills he became chaplain. The lifelong Clevelander, now living at Divine Word in Kirtland, knew he was going to be a priest at a young age. “As a 7th grader at St. Raphael’s in Bay Village, a missionary came to talk to our class, and this is what got me thinking of the priesthood,” he says. “My father was OK with the idea, but not as a missionary. My grandmother was very encouraging. My mother—well she was a little neutral to the idea.” Caddy was born in Cleveland and moved to West Park. He moved between Our Lady of Angels and St. Raphael’s, and then went on to St. Edward’s High School in Lakewood. After two years he enrolled at Borromeo Seminary High School. He was in the first class of students for Borromeo Seminary College. His first assignment was part-time at St. Robert’s Parish in Euclid and the faculty of St. Mary Seminary. Much of Caddy’s work in the diocese has been at Borromeo College/St. Mary’s Seminary with a stop at St. Clare Parish and finishing at St. Francis of Assisi. What has always been a driver in his ministry is working with young people. Caddy was involved for 30 years with Search for Christian Maturity, a ministry similar to today’s LifeTeen or Kairos. It was a weekend retreat for high school and college-age students. This work was in addition to being active in the youth ministry at St. Mary’s Seminary. At St. Francis of Assisi, Caddy got to know many students and families that would go on to NDCL which made the transition to chaplain easy for him. It was a way for him to extend his love of youth ministry even during retirement. “The teenagers really look after and care for each other. I think they are some of the most caring young men and women anywhere.” In working with the NDCL students, Caddy hopes that they take from this place the faith with them wherever the venture after high school. This is his greatest hope.

The McKeon name is familiar to the NDCL community. Her grandfather is Bill McKeon, Cathedral Latin class of 1945. In addition, cousins Caitlin, Colin, and Claire McKeon are all NDCL graduates. Now living in Lakewood and attending St. Christopher’s parish in Rocky River, McKeon has been active in campus ministry for many years. She was active in Walsh Jesuit’s Labre ministry while in high school, and later at the University of Dayton participated in the popular “Christmas on Campus” day that treats under-privileged youth in the Dayton area to a fun-filled day of Christmas cheer. Her hope for the students she serves is to inspire them to reach beyond the walls of campus and serve others as Jesus did. A gateway to this goal is attracting students to the annual Kairos retreat. “I feel when kids go on the Kairos retreat, it opens them up to so many more possibilities throughout the year,” she says. “It gets them away from their bubble of family and friends for a moment and gives them the chance to make a real difference for our world.”

NDCL CAMPUS MINISTRY, DIRECTOR OF STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Ben Lozar is passionate about developing leaders at NDCL who will go from this place and transform the world. The 2009 NDCL graduate moved down the hall this summer, transitioning from math instructor to campus minister. “One of my drives is to develop young people into leaders,” he says. “(NDCL Principal) Joe Waler inspired me to take this interest of mine and put it to work in our campus ministry program.” Lozar returned to his alma mater in 2015 as a math teacher and assistant band director. In working with band students, Lozar is surrounded by natural leaders which encouraged him to take the current path in his career. Growing up in Willoughby Hills and attending St. Felicitas School in Euclid, Lozar graduated from the University of Cincinnati. After teaching in Amelia, Ohio for one year, NDCL beckoned. Even with the challenges of ministering during a pandemic, Lozar sees beacons of light shining through the students.

“I love that we trust teenagers to build this world from where we are at.”

“Logistical challenges to our campus ministry activities can be a barrier,” Lozick says. “However the ideals of serving our brothers and sisters in need are still present. Maybe we can’t do it ‘this way’ anymore, but rather an alternative exists that we can then put into action. I give the students a lot of credit for going along with the bumps in the road that the pandemic has placed before us.”

With a perpetual pep in his step and upbeat personality, Lozar is drawn to NDCL’s vision of educating leaders who “transform the world”. “We are not doing things just to do it. Campus Ministry is about learning all the values of the Catholic faith and how they can be part of our daily life. I love that we trust teenagers to build this world from where we are at.” Lozar’s aim is to find the individual talents of students and adults who through a collective effort do good for those in need. Just like any good band director, Lozar seeks to “make music” among many different talents and passions of those he serves.

Joyce Kelleher

FAITH FORMATION COORDINATOR (NDES)

With fifty-four years of marriage, two children, and six grandchildren, Joyce Kelleher has much to smile about. Named this summer as Notre Dame Elementary School’s Faith Formation Coordinator, Kelleher “returns” to campus, though she has been part of the Notre Dame family since 2007. Kelleher and her husband John—who retired as Notre Dame Schools Director of Finance in 2015—returned to NE Ohio after several years in Hilton Head, SC. Three of their grandchildren are NDCL Lions, including freshman Alexa Borally. “We were visiting campus last November and contemplating coming back to Cleveland to be close to our family,” Joyce says. “By chance we learned of an opening in Notre Dame Village and in March, decided to put our Hilton Head home up for sale. A day later, it sold and we called Notre Dame Village the day after that!”

Over the summer, Joyce was named to her position to help teachers and students experience God at school in addition to them learning the doctrine of the Catholic faith. Her work in this role includes Mass preparation made more difficult because of the pandemic. Her background in religious education and catechetical training and the timing of her move to NE Ohio made a perfect marriage for the part-time position.

Born in Cleveland and raised in Parma Heights, Kelleher (nee Morgenstern) attended Incarnate Word Academy and Holy Family School/Parish. The Parma High graduate later went to Northwestern University where she met John. They married in 1966 and experienced a number of moves over several years. One of those moves was to Latrobe, PA where she earned a Master’s in Systematic Theology from St. Vincent Seminary. This gave her the opportunity to work in both the Greensburg (PA) Diocese as Director of Initiation and Spiritual Formation and the Diocese of Cleveland as Secretary for Catechetical Services. In both positions she was responsible for providing leadership and direction for religious education in parishes and schools. One of her greatest joys early in her time at Notre Dame Elementary is going into the classroom and teaching students about the Mass. School Masses include just one or two grades attending in person while the rest of the school watches via live stream. Having an office in the heart of the school gives students the chance to poke their head in with a cheerful “Hello Mrs. Kelleher!” as they pass by. “The elementary experience of faith must be family-friendly,” she says. “It is setting a foundation for the students and their families. Religion isn’t a book you put on a shelf, but how your family lives its life. It is a feeling.” 2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT

“To me, Labre means fellowship and friendship,” says Campus Minister Halle McKeon. “It is about the connections with the individuals that we serve. Witnessing a student bond with these men and women is really special to me.”

The Labre ministry, named for St. Benedict Joseph Labre, is not only feeding the homeless but developing friendship and human decency with those in great need.

The Tuesday outreach program is meaningful not only for the recipients—those living in tents, under bridges or other hand-made structures—but just as much for those in the NDCL community that volunteer. McKeon’s favorite moment was celebrating one of the men finally getting an apartment.

ince its inception in early 2019, NDCL’s Labre ministry has connected dozens of students and adults in the NDCL community to men, women and children in need of God’s loving care.

“He was so excited about getting his own place that we brought him a cake,” she says. “All he had was a futon and table, it was so small. But he was so proud. People have such a positive demeanor even though they are living in severe conditions.”

Each week, donated food is prepared and loaded onto an NDCL van with that week’s crew of student and adult volunteers—many of whom are regulars. In addition to food, personal care products and NDCL spiritwear are given to the individuals served by the ministry.

NDCL’s program was launched through the idea and financial gift of Phil `76 and Sally Fogarty. During the height of the school’s in-person shutdown, students were not in a position to make the weekly trips. The Fogartys and McKeon stepped up in alternating weeks so that— even in the height of a pandemic—the ministry persevered.

In early 2020, NDCL hosted one of the men for a campus visit arranged by McKeon.

“Sally and I marvel at the goodness in our students and how Labre gives them a chance to express that with so much humility,” Fogarty says. “You should see the joy that they give and receive every Tuesday, rain or shine, on the streets of Cleveland.”

“It was a little bit out of the ordinary to do something like this,” McKeon says. “But (NDCL Principal) Joe Waler gave us the freedom to go for it. Inviting homeless people into “our home” was a really special day.” Campus minister Ben Lozar, who began his new role this summer, is eager to make his first Labre trip. The love Dan expressed for Cathedral Latin was contagious. As I met Dan and his brother, Tom ’64, at the Hall of Fame celebration a few years ago, it was clear to me that I was among two of the proudest Latin Lions. His high school years shaped him just as readily as did his family. He spoke about his teammates and classmates as his brothers. He exuded love for his kids and grandkids and wanted to help create a lasting legacy at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. Because of the generosity and vision of Dan, Tom, and their dear friend, Dave Clements ’73, the Legacy Wall was made possible. Outside the McGarry Gym, there is a beautiful testament to the faith, hope, pride, and tradition that now inspires our current students and welcomes home our alumni from our legacy schools of Notre Dame Academy, Cathedral Latin, and NDCL. Dear Friends of Notre Dame Schools, As an alumna of Notre Dame Academy, I value the gift of an excellent education in a faith-filled environment. I am proud to lead our talented, dedicated, and generous Board. The Notre Dame Schools (NDS) Board of Directors, formed in 2015, was a vision of the Sisters of Notre Dame (SND) to ensure the sustainability of the SND Educational Vision and Principles here on campus. It is our duty on the board through our committees to work with school leadership to plan development and to steward and secure ample resources. Though we are keenly aware of the operations of the school, it is our duty to open wide our vision far into the future.

During this past school year, the Board of Directors and the staff of the schools were engaged in the development of a new strategic plan that will build upon the successes of our legacies and to serve as a renewed road map for the future of the schools. This integrated strategic plan will build upon the established mutually beneficial relationships between the schools, shared resources and positive synergies for programs, students, faculty and staff.
