Welcome to Notre Dame Preparatory High School and the 2021-2022 school year!

Each year we produce SAINTS 101 as your “NDP bible” to help you find the information you need in one easy resource. I hope you find this booklet useful.

Speaking of HOPE, that is our theme for this year. After overcoming the challenges of the past two years, we have many reasons to hope and know that we can prevail no matter what, through our trust in the Lord and His love for us.

CONTACT INFORMATION Notre Dame Preparatory uses family contact information on file. Please ensure that all information is updated at the beginning of each school year by visiting ndpsaints.powerschool.com/public. All families must confirm personal information for each of their students by August 2, 2021. If information needs to be updated during the school year, please contact the Office of the Registrar at registrar@ndpsaints.org.

PARENTAL SUPPORT The Diocesan Code of Discipline directs that “Parents or legal guardians are expected to support teachers and administrators and to recognize that disciplinary action entails the exercise of judgment, often under pressing circumstances.” (Diocesan Handbook 3-1.4.17 C.4). Serious consideration is given to every disciplinary action taken.

While recognizing parents as the primary educators of their children, Notre Dame Preparatory needs, expects and requires honest and consistent cooperation to implement the spirit as well as the letter of the Student/Parent Handbook’s guidelines and rules. If, in the opinion of the principal, either a student’s or a parent’s/guardian’s actions, attitudes, or behavior are found in conflict with the school’s mission, policies or any specific directive of the administration or if parents/guardians or students fail to cooperate and comply with Notre Dame Prep’s disciplinary policy or practice, the student may be barred from continued enrollment at Notre Dame Preparatory.

ATTENDANCE

Our absence/tardy policies have been updated for the 2021-22 school year.

ABSENCES/TARDIES 1. The state of Arizona requires by law [ARS 15-803(B)] that all students attend school 90% of the school year. Students who miss 10% or more of classes may jeopardize earning credit in each class in which they have excessive absences.

At 6 absences per semester (10%), the student will be required to earn a 75% or

higher on the final exam to receive credit for the course.

At 7 absences per semester, the student will not receive credit for the course.

Students may be asked to withdraw from Notre Dame Prep.

2. If your child will be absent, contact the Attendance Desk by filling out the attendance form at ndpsaints.org/quicklinks/attendance.

3. A student is considered tardy when they enter the classroom after the bell rings at the start of class.

At 6 tardies per semester, the student will be required to earn a 75% or higher on

the final exam to receive credit for the course.

At 7 tardies per semester, the student will not receive credit for the course.

Students may be asked to withdraw from Notre Dame Prep.

4. Please familiarize yourself with the entire attendance policy and make note of the procedures in the following areas:

Students may NOT leave school with anyone other than their parents without written permission from the student’s parent or legal guardian.

5. Liturgies are an important component at Notre Dame Preparatory and a requirement for all students. Absences from Mass will need to be submitted directly to the Principal and will rarely be approved.

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY

1. Our primary purpose as an educational institution is academics. Students must be in good academic and disciplinary standing to participate in any co-curricular activities at Notre Dame Preparatory. Please see the Student/Parent Handbook for more details at www.ndpsaints. org/handbook.

2. Students are ineligible if they have earned one F or two Ds. The first eligibility report will be pulled 6 weeks after the beginning of the semester and will then be pulled weekly. Students will be ineligible for a period of 7 days. They will be unable to participate in games, club meetings, or performances, during the window of ineligibility.

COVID PROTOCOLS

DRUG TESTING (CONT.)

We are moving to a more normal year and easing COVID restrictions.

1. Masks will no longer be required in classrooms or outside on campus.

2. A student may wear a mask if he/she wishes.

3. Classes will all be in person.

4. There will be no synchronous online learning, however, teachers will record classes for absent students to view asynchronously after school.

5. Students will no longer need to take their temperatures before entering campus.

6. If you are sick, please stay home.

7. This policy could change if COVID numbers rise.

4. If a student is found to have taken or in possession of a banned substance or drug paraphernalia, he/she will undergo a formal evaluation which may result in mandatory counseling, suspension, withdrawal or dismissal.

5. Any student who attempts to alter or disrupt a valid collection sample may be dismissed.

NURSE’S OFFICE

1. In the event of illness or injury while at school, students MUST report to the Nurse’s Office for evaluation.

2. The nurse will determine the condition and disposition of the student and decide if the student should go home or stay at school.

3. The nurse, not the student, will contact the parents regarding a student’s health. No student may use his/her cell phone to request a pick-up. All arrangements must go through the school nurse.

4. A documented immunization record is required by Arizona Law for all students attending school. No student will be permitted to begin classes until this requirement is met.

DELIVERIES Fostering responsibility in our students and keeping the campus safe are essential to our mission.

1. Students should come to school fully prepared for the day.

2. The front office will not accept any items or drop-offs. This includes food, beverage, technology, and homework.

3. Do not bypass this policy by leaving items outside the gates or passing items over the fence.

PE UNIFORMS

1. PE Uniforms will be distributed in PE class the first week of school.

2. Students may not wear any part of the Notre Dame Prep PE uniform in any class other than physical education.

3. Each student will be provided with a small PE locker to keep their uniform and personal items.

4. A combination lock will be provided from the PE department. If a student loses his/her lock, he/she will have to purchase a new one.

5. The cost of the uniform is T-shirt $10, shorts $10, Dance T-Shirt (Check with Instructor for Fee).

6. The PE uniform fee will be automatically added to the student’s Smart Tuition account.

DRUG TESTING 1. For the health and well-being of our students, Notre Dame Preparatory is an alcohol, tobacco, vape, and drug-free campus.

2. The use, possession, sharing or selling of prescription or nonprescription drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or vape cigarettes is strictly prohibited on or off campus and could result in withdrawal from Notre Dame Prep.

3. Notre Dame Preparatory conducts mandatory random drug testing for all students on campus. Students may be tested any day for any reason.

TECHNOLOGY

PARKING INFORMATION

1. At NDP, technology is integrated into all aspects of the curriculum. All students are required to provide their own laptops.

2. The IT department assists with troubleshooting however, the student is responsible for repairs to their personal devices. For IT help, email helpdesk@ndpsaints.org.

3. All new students will need to set up an appointment with IT in late July or early August to gain access to their school accounts and receive information about academic applications (Canvas and PowerSchool).

1. Parking permits may be purchased at any time after July 1 and picked up in the COMM on August 9 and 10 during normal school hours.

2. All students must first complete the vehicle registration form found on our website at ndpsaints.org/quicklinks/parking-permit before they can pick up their parking permit.

3. Students will be assigned a parking spot for the entire school year in one of our student parking lots. No one but the permit holder may park in that assigned spot.

4. For seniors who purchased a parking spot in May and plan to give that spot a custom paint job, our official painting days will be, Tuesday, July 27, Wednesday, July 28 and Thursday, July 29 from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

The make-up days will be Monday, August 9 and Tuesday, August 10 from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

TUITION

There are three tuition payment plans available: 1. One-time tuition paid in full by July 15.

2. Two-installment payment plan paid by July 15 and December 15.

3. Ten monthly installments (July through April).

5. For students earning STO money, the first round of awards (payments) are sent to NDP in July.

6. The finance office will apply awards directly to students’ accounts within a week of receiving the funds.

STUDENT LUNCH PROGRAM 1. NDP is a cashless campus for meal purchases.

2. Student ID cards come with a barcode so that cards can be loaded through K12 Payments.

3. To create an account and to reload funds onto student ID cards for on-campus meals, go to k12paymentcenter.com and create your family account.

4. For your convenience the student meal plan link can be found easily on our website or mobile app under Quick Links - Student Meal Plans.

5. The lunch menu can be found under Quick Links at ndpsaints.org/quicklinks/lunch-menu.

UNIFORM POLICY AND DRESS CODE

1. Dressing appropriately demonstrates pride in personal appearance while upholding our three R’s: Reverence, Respect and Responsibility. Our dress code promotes good taste and is in line with modest contemporary standards for a Catholic high school.

2. All uniform clothing must be purchased at Anton Uniforms or our used uniform sales.

4. Our Administration reserves the right to judge the appropriateness of a student’s dress.

DAILY

SPIRIT

Girls must wear a uniform skirt to the knee, oxford button-down shirt and dress shoes (no white-bottom shoes).

Boys must wear long khaki pants, oxford shirt, a black or brown belt and dress shoes (no white-bottom shoes) and either the traditional striped NDP tie or the purple and black tie introduced in 2019.

Girls may wear the uniform skirt to the knee or bermuda-length shorts (khaki or blackwith school polo tucked in. Belts are required with shorts.

Boys may wear uniform shorts (plaid, khaki or black) with school polo shirt tucked in.

Shorts must be worn with a black, brown or white belt (no logos).

Girls may wear the uniform skirt to the knee or bermuda-length shorts (khaki or black) with a school spirit shirt. Shirts may be untucked on spirit days only.

Boys may wear uniform shorts (plaid, khaki or black) with a school spirit shirt.

ACADEMICS

ACADEMICS AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT Notre Dame Prep offers a wide variety of learning programs to suit the needs of students with varying learning styles. These programs are designed to help our students succeed. For information on all of our programs, contact your student’s counselor or go to ndpsaints.org/academics.

ACADEMIC CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE (ACE) The Academic Center for Excellence provides support to students with identified learning challenges. The ACE faculty provides specific academic support/tutoring as well as ongoing 1-1 coaching and feedback for academic growth and skill development.

Student Support Plans may be developed for students with learning disabilities to provide academic accommodations for classes and the SAT and/or ACT as needed. ndpsaints.org/academics/academic-support.

ACADEMIC HONORS NDP offers Summa Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude programs to encourage students to challenge themselves in the classroom and prepare themselves for rigorous college and university curriculums. Learn more at ndpsaints.org/academic-honors.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT The Advanced Placement (AP) program was created by College Board to give high school students the chance to tackle college-level work. Students taking AP classes are required to take the College Board’s AP test in May with the goal of earning college credit and placement. AP courses are offered in social studies, world languages, science, math and English. Students interested in Advanced Placement (AP) courses must meet the prerequisites of each course. Refer to ndpsaints.org/academics/course-description-guide and talk to your student’s counselor. Learn more about AP programs at ap.collegeboard.org.

DUAL ENROLLMENT Notre Dame Prep partners with Scottsdale Community College and the University of Arizona to allow students to earn college credit while attending high school. These courses are taught by certified NDP teachers here on our campus, and the credits transfer to many colleges and universities in the state of Arizona and beyond. OFFICE HOURS After school, teachers are available until 3:30 p.m. on regular block schedule days to assist students seeking help with their studies. At times, teachers may have other commitments such as coaching or supervision after school, so please check each teacher’s Canvas page for specific office hour availability. Students are highly encouraged to consult with their teachers and meet with them regularly for additional assistance during office hours. Parent/Teacher/Student meetings may be scheduled during this time as well. To schedule a meeting or inquire about a class, please email your teachers: ndpsaints.org/myndp/staff-directory.

PARENT-TEACHER-STUDENT CONFERENCES We hold one parent-teacher-student conference night on campus each year in the fall. This year, the conferences will be held by teacher invitation specifically for those students that need some intervention, support or a plan for improvement. Students will be required to accompany their parents to the conferences. More details will be made available about these conferences in late August. ST. ALOYSIUS GONZAGA The St. Aloysius Gonzaga Program assists those students who demonstrate academic potential and a desire to learn but need extra support navigating NDP’s college preparatory curriculum successfully. ST. THOMAS AQUINAS SCHOLAR PROGRAM The St. Thomas Aquinas Scholar Program is a highly competitive, integrated program of study that provides a challenging, well-rounded education for our most gifted and motivated students. St. Thomas Aquinas Scholars must meet rigorous academic requirements. For more information, please visit ndpsaints.org/academics/st-thomas-aquinas-scholars-program.

TESTING CENTER Located in the ACE, our Testing Center is a quiet, stress-free environment where students may go to take classroom exams and standardized tests. This space is for students who need to make up quizzes or exams that they missed while they were absent. The Testing Center is also a place where students who require extended time for testing can go and complete their exams without distraction or interruption. TUTORING Tutoring is provided by National Honor Society members within each House. Each House has a tutoring coordinator. Please check with your House Captains for more details. Tutoring is generally provided during lunch hours, as well as before and after school. Students who are struggling or receiving failing grades should avail themselves of this valuable service. Math Labs tutoring may be organized separately for those needing extra assistance after school.

BELL SCHEDULES NDP’s daily schedule is a block schedule. Studies show that a block schedule allows for in-depth instruction, application, feedback and reflection, thus maximizing student learning success. The Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday schedule incorporates four block-period classes, daily House time, break and lunch periods. The Wednesday schedule is unique. Students attend all eight classes for shorter time periods and are dismissed from school at 2:00 p.m. to allow for teacher professional development.

We will have special bell schedules for all-school Mass days and pep rally days (see below).

Occasionally during the school year, we will have four-day weeks where we have either Monday or Friday off due to a holiday. On weeks such as these, we will have a special schedule with only block schedule days. For example:

PICK-UP/DROP-OFF TRAFFIC FLOW Our Pick-Up and Drop-Off traffic flow directions have changed! Effective immediately all traffic on NDP’s Loop Road will be one-way from SOUTH to NORTH in the morning and afternoon. (see diagram on next page).

Students who DRIVE THEMSELVES and need to park in one of our student

lots are to USE THE LEFT LANE.

Parents who are DROPPING OFF or PICKING UP students are to USE THE

RIGHT LANE.

All THROUGH TRAFFIC should use the LEFT LANE.

All drivers exit campus past Bemis Field to turn onto 98th street.

Drivers in the left lane MUST turn left.

Drivers in the right lane MUST turn right.

The traffic lanes will be monitored by staff and security.

Please drive safely, obey the speed limit (5mph) and respectfully follow the

directions given by our security staff. Your cooperation with NDP staff

members is important for your safety and the safety of our students.

Notre Dame Preparatory’s counselors are educators who promote success for today’s students. They are uniquely trained in adolescent development, learning strategies, self-management and social skills. With a low counselor-to-student ratio, our students receive individual and personal attention. NDP’s proactive, comprehensive school counseling program focuses on

A message from the Chaplain My Friends in Christ, HOPE. What a fitting theme for 2021-22, as it bridges the difficult circumstances we faced in the previous year, yet looks forward to the great hope and opportunities that have arisen for this upcoming year.

The virtue of Hope cannot arise from a mere human being. It is a transcendental property that goes beyond a human being. Hope can only come and stem from the one who is Hope – God Himself.

Hope is grounded in the certainty of faith realized. A Christian without hope is a lousy witness to Jesus Christ who conquered death, rose, and is still with us through the Holy Spirit, Sacraments, the Church and the community of believers.

This year we want to continue forming our community by reminding ourselves of all the good that is around us.

Hope is the gift that allows us to enjoy the goods of life without depending on them, and endure the challenges in this life without being consumed by them.

Sometimes our tendency is to focus so much on the bad things, that we begin to lose sight of all that is good, all that are gifts from God in our lives.

So as we move forward in hope; honoring God, offering our best, working for peace and enriching the lives of others through service, we can bring about good and be the change the world so desperately needs. FAITH FORMATION This year we plan to develop and form our “spiritual lenses” to see opportunities for God’s grace and seeds of hope in our loving God through: 1. Kairos retreats 2. Service trips to Aravaipa Farms, Washington DC, Rocky Point, Mexico and Puerto Rico 3. Outdoor all-school Masses throughout the year, as well as weekly class masses in our new Performing Arts Center 4. Two all-school Reconciliation services done through the theology classes 5. CULTURE

We desire that our students lead lives that reflect the example of Jesus Christ; accepting, loving and inclusive.

THE HOUSE SYSTEM

In this technological world teens are more isolated than ever before. To remedy this, our student body is grouped into 10 Houses. These Houses build community, mentorship, discipleship and opportunities for growth and leadership.

Guided by Caitlin Melnychenko and Mark Granger, Co-Directors of the House System, students develop leadership skills and become the best versions of themselves while living authentic lives that are true to the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The purpose of the House System is to ensure every student and adult on our campus has a community who cares and holds them accountable to be who God created them to be.

The goal is to find and foster the brilliance in each student and to give each soul on campus a place where they are embraced by their fellow House members while building a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a desire to live as a true disciple.

At Notre Dame Prep, we seek to educate the whole student; mind, body and soul. The House System allows students to be recognized for more than GPA or athletic achievement.

Within their House, students’ talents are explored and nurtured by a built-in support system.

Each House consists of four smaller groups called Families. Our students will have a chance to check in with their Families for a few minutes each day for authentic interpersonal interaction and fellowship.

The Houses compete for the coveted House Cup each year by earning House Points through academics, Christian service and school spirit, while showing Reverence, Respect and Responsibility toward each other.

We offer more than 30 student-led clubs at NDP for students who have hobbies beyond athletics and academics. From Medical Club and E-Sports to Saints For Life and Diversity Student Union; there is something for everyone!

Students are encouraged to join a club early as a way to make friends who share their passions and interests. If a club of interest doesn’t exist, students are encouraged to create one with other like-minded individuals.

ATHLETICS

The Notre Dame Preparatory athletic programs are part of the fabric of the NDP community with more than 80% of students participating in AIA or club sports. NDP competes locally, regionally and nationally in 27 interscholastic sports and activities. We are very proud of our athletic tradition and success, winning 54 state championships. Our commitment is to provide young men and women with dynamic opportunities for personal growth and formation through athletics that will impact each of them for a lifetime.

To participate in sports in the 2021-22 school year, all athletes must register online to be cleared and approved before the first tryout or practice. All students must take and upload a new physical (after 3/1/21), while new and transfer students must also take the Brainbook and Opioid Course and upload the completed certificate.

ARTS ARTS PROGRAMS Art and music are gifts that bring beauty and creativity to our lives. At NDP we offer classes in both performing, digital, visual and media arts. Individually, the groups compete in local and regional competitions and perform acts of charity for those who are sick or those who may not otherwise have access to music, song, dance or art.

In performing arts we offer choir, jazz ensemble, guitar orchestra, drama and dance. This year we will hold classes and performances in our brand new St. Catherine of Bologna Performing Arts Center.

ST. CATHERINE OF BOLOGNA PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Fundraising continues for our newest addition to campus. Opening in fall 2021, the Performing Arts Center (PAC) is part of the Our Future in Focus: Vision 2020 campaign. ITC - The individual tax credit, for those filing single or joint returns, is a dollar for dollar match of your tax liability (amount restrictions apply). FUNDRAISING EVENTS The NDP Advancement Department traditionally supports six annual fundraising events.

These events are well attended and provide an opportunity for friends, neighbors, business associates and relatives to get to know our NDP community.

The revenue generated from these events is a key factor in achieving our fundraising goals.

Not only do the funds raised help bridge the gap between tuition fees and the actual cost to educate, but most recently, we were able to complete a number of campus beautification projects, improve campus safety and update our technology.

CULINARY FESTIVAL | NOVEMBER 6 Favorite restaurants from all over the Valley bring their culinary delights to this fabulous dining extravaganza under the stars on the NDP campus. This 21+ event is casual, and features adult beverages, a silent auction and much more! ndpsaints.org/culinaryfest.

GOLF TOURNAMENT | DECEMBER 1 Scottsdale in December is the perfect time for a round of golf at the gorgeous Troon North Golf Course. SAINTS 5K | JANUARY 29 Help us raise awareness for Teen Mental Health! MARDI GRAS DAY OF GIVING | MARCH 1 Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday is a special day at NDP. Our NDP Live! club hosts a livestream-a-thon to raise as much money in one day as possible. Their 8-hour broadcast is full of fun contests, House challenges and testimonials about the many ways NDP has impacted the lives of current and former students. It takes place the day before Lent begins and we ask our entire community to #giveitup4NDP and make a donation. ANNUAL AUCTION FASHION SHOW | MAY 14 The Auction Fashion Show is our largest fundraiser of the year and gives our entire community a night of good times and glamour while supporting our mission. VOLUNTEERS At Notre Dame Prep, the partnership between NDP faculty, staff and parents is vital to the growth and success of our students and institution. SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING

All parent volunteers MUST attend one Safe Environment Training (SET) class or annually renew their SET training through the Diocese of Phoenix to be cleared to work on campus.

For the safety of our campus, all parent volunteers and visitors MUST sign in and sign out at the front desk. There are no exceptions.

PARENT ASSOCIATIONS

Mothers’ Guild and Dads’ Club serve as the vehicles for parents to engage in the life of the school and enter into the NDP experience. Involved parents share in the fun and friendship of our community. Through these organizations parents volunteer, socialize, pray, hike and become a part of the NDP family.
