Letter from the Principal Dear Parents, Welcome to a new and exciting school year. We are so glad that you joined our NDP community for the 2018-2019 school year. Each year we use a theme as our guiding practice and lens. This year it is Mercy and Grace. We will build on last year’s theme of student empowerment, and continue to expect our students to arrive at school prepared to learn while adopting behaviors that will benefit them in college and beyond. Developing hearts full of mercy and grace is indicative of the impact of our Catholic identity. For more on this, please read Father Kurt’s letter on page 8. We produce this Saints 101 booklet each year to provide you with information on the proper use of our school app, website, academic and payment tools and the school calendar. We keep our information up to date daily so tracking information is made easy for both students and parents. There are several important electronic tools that we use to track student progress. These programs give access to both the students and the parents. Canvas is our learning management system used to keep track of homework assignments, course calendars and teachers comments. Naviance is our career and college readiness tracker used for sending letters of recommendation and transcripts to colleges and universities. College representative visits will also be listed on Canvas and Naviance. Lastly, PowerSchool is our student management system, used for tracking attendance, grades, GPA, transcripts and course schedule. Please read the Online Tools section on page 16. Details are included about the academic, co-curricular, spiritual and service life of our school. Also, I encourage you to explore the information regarding parent groups and parent engagement, diocesan Safe Environment training and the many ways each of us can support the long-term growth and financial stability of our school. Our free school app will your best friend this year. For directions on how to download the app go to page 14. For the safety of our students, the online calendar on our website will not be available to the public. Below is a private link to the school calendar for our current community only. Keep your copy of Saints 101 handy throughout the year, as it will be helpful regarding all things NDP. Pay careful attention to the calendar of dates on pages 22-23 and continue checking the calendar on the app or bookmark ndpsaints.org/calendar. It is a reality for all schools that scheduled dates and times require changing. We will make sure you are aware of any changes through our app, website, social media, weekly newsletter and via email when this happens. Welcome back! I’m looking forward to a year of Mercy and Grace,

Jill Platt, M.Ed Notre Dame Preparatory Principal

ACADEMICS Notre Dame offers a wide variety of learning programs to suit the needs of students with varying learning styles.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT

AP courses are accelerated courses with rigorous homework where students can satisfy college graduation requirements as long as they score a 4 or 5 on the AP exam for each Advanced Placement course they take. Note: college acceptance of AP courses varies with each institution. For a list of AP course offerings at Notre Dame Prep, visit ndpsaints.org/AP.

DUAL ENROLLMENT

ACADEMIC HONORS

Notre Dame Prep encourages students to challenge themselves in the classroom to achieve high academic designation and improve their ability to compete for admission to selective colleges and universities. We offer Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude programs. Cum Laude is being phased out and will not be available for the class of 2022 and beyond. Letter from the Chaplain My Friends in Christ, I am thrilled with our theme for the 2018-19 school year; Mercy and Grace. The word mercy stems from the Latin compound word misericordia, which literally means a heart compassionate for those in misery—specifically a heart that mirrors Jesus Christ’s. So when I think of the mercy of God, I don’t see someone who is far removed from our suffering or just looks upon it from afar. I see God, a loving father who suffers beside us with his whole heart. It is the nature of God’s mercy that His heart reaches into our misery and replaces it with grace. Grace is God’s outpouring of love into our souls, and it lifts us up. Once we truly receive this gift, we joyfully apply it to our lives. We do this by imitating Jesus. We have received mercy and grace from God, and that moves us to be merciful and gracious to all on campus as well. What we have received, should naturally flow from us to others. This is demonstrated by the sympathy we show each other through reverence, respect and responsibility. Asking someone how their day is going is a simple way of showing mercy. Just because someone may not show an outward sign of suffering, they may be experiencing spiritual poverty and sadness and as a community, we need to be attuned to our fellow Saints. Notre Dame Prep is a sacred space where our beautiful campus and all the people, students, parents, faculty members, staff and administration, are treated with dignity. It is our expectation for the new school year that all on campus imitate Our Blessed Mother. We know what the actions of loving, virtuous, kind and forgiving people look like, and we all must be empowered by the Holy Spirit to make sure that our actions reflect the mercy and grace freely given by God. One of the greatest privileges we have as a Catholic school is that we have the sacraments available to us. And the very place where mercy and grace meet is in the sacrament of reconciliation. This year I would like to encourage NDP students and families to return to the sacrament of confession. Because the more you use it, the more it strengthens you to avoid behavior inconsistent with God’s love, mercy and grace. Blessings to you all,

Father Kurt Perera Notre Dame Preparatory Chaplain

JOIN US FOR MASS

Mass is the pinnacle of Catholic life. Parents are always welcome to join us for our monthly all-school Mass (pages 22 and 23) held in the Dale M. Jensen Gymnasium. We celebrate daily Mass in the chapel either in the morning or at lunch time. While we are unapologetically Catholic, we welcome students of all faith traditions. Students who attend Notre Dame Prep are expected to share fully in our mission. Attendance at Mass is our most sacred expression of encountering the living person of Jesus Christ. For more information about spiritual life at NDP, please visit ndpsaints.org/SpiritualLife.

NDP HOUSE SYSTEM At NDP we engage in the formation of the entire person; mind, body and soul. We desire that our students leave here and go on to lead lives that reflect the example of Jesus Christ. Through the leadership of Director of House Faith Formation Mary Lou Lachvayder, we offer ways for students to develop skills to become the best versions of themselves and live authentic lives that are good, right and true. To help our students find their way at Notre Dame Prep, we have implemented the House System. Each student is assigned to one of ten houses where he or she can feel safe to express his or her faith, fears, and dreams. Within their House, students have multiple opportunities to take on leadership roles such as House captain, spirit coordinator and house activities leader. All students are free to discover their gifts and talents. As a whole, students work together to strengthen their House. Within each House there are smaller groups called families providing opportunities for even more in-depth discussion and camaraderie. The House System will cement the bond between House members and provide healthy competition between the Houses in the areas of academic excellence, school spirit, Christian service and more. House points are given for various reasons creating healthy rivalry between houses and greatness among our students. Other Student Formation Activities: •

House Meetings will take place regularly. Students will enjoy small-group discussions, speakers, character and leadership lessons and community building with their House and Family throughout the school year.

•

Christian Service Learning helps students learn to freely sacrifice of themselves to serve the less fortunate and marginalized. Students are required to give 30 hours of Christian service per year for high school credit. A pass/fail grade is given.

•

Freshman Plunge is our community’s introductory service immersion to kick-start a life-long desire to serve others. Freshman will serve with fellow members of their House.

•

Service Immersion Experiences are offered each year for students in every grade level to travel to underserved areas locally, regionally and internationally.

•

Capstone Interviews are required for graduation and serve to demonstrate the growth and formation upperclass students experienced while attending NDP.

CLASSROOM COMMUNICATION As a college preparatory high school, we encourage students to advocate for themselves when dealing with teachers. •

If your student has a concern about a grade or assignment, they must first go to the teacher. Encourage your child to email or make an appointment to talk to the teacher, BEFORE you intervene.

•

If that doesn’t resolve the concern, the parent may contact the teacher. The parent-teacher partnership is an important one. The teacher is the best person to tell you about the classroom environment, and they are the ones best suited to resolve a classroom issue.

•

If the concern still exists, the next step would be to contact the department chair (found on page 3 of this booklet).

•

It is critical that these steps are followed BEFORE contacting the administration.

Support Each year Notre Dame Prep relies on the generosity of donors not only to ensure that we meet the needs of our school today, but also to anticipate the demands of the future. Each gift, no matter the size, is truly appreciated.

ANNUAL DAY OF GIVING SEPTEMBER 28, 2018 Student tuition covers a portion of the full cost of education, with the remaining amount supplemented by contributions to the Saints’ Fund. A robust fund not only bridges the gap between tuition revenue and the actual cost of educating our students, it allows for the enhancement of the NDP experience by benefitting: • • • •

• •

Athletics Performing and Fine Arts Robotics Co-curricular Activities including clubs and student leadership opportunities Technology Campus Beautification

SCRIP GIFT CARD SALES

Scrip is a tuition rebate incentive program. When you purchase Scrip, you purchase gift cards to use like cash. Vendors donate a percentage of the card value to our school. In turn, NDP splits the donation with you. Half goes to the Tuition Assistance Fund and half goes to you in the form of a tuition rebate. It is a win-win! Scrip cards are sold in the Saints Store. Learn more at ndpsaints.org/SCRIP.

TUITION ASSISTANCE FUND

NDP proudly provides tuition assistance to one in four students, resulting in the opportunity for a college preparatory, faith-based education for all students, regardless of circumstances. If you would like to help deserving students with financial need receive an NDP education, please make your tax deductible gift at ndpsaints.org/tuitionfund.

REDIRECT TAX DOLLARS TO SUPPORT NDP THROUGH CEA CORPORATE TAX CREDIT

C-corporations, S-corporations and insurance companies may redirect their Arizona tax liability to Scholarship Tuition Organizations like Catholic Education Arizona (CEA). Contributions are designated to NDP and allocated to our students who have a verified financial need for assistance. Please visit ndpsaints.org/cea or ceaz.org.

INDIVIDUAL TAX CREDIT

Give the gift of education at no cost to you by taking advantage of the Arizona Private School Tax Credit through Catholic Education Arizona (CEA) and designating NDP as the recipient. By contributing, students with qualified need will receive tuition aid. There is NO net cost to you, you receive a dollar for dollar state income tax credit.
