WELCOME | NOTRE DAME PREPARATORY
DEAR NDP COMMUNITY, As I reflect on the 2017-18 school year, I can’t help but marvel at the amount of positive changes that took place. As most transition years go, it was a time of challenge, problem-solving, growth and encouragement. In April 2017, I was given the great privilege of becoming the first woman principal to lead Notre Dame Preparatory. On July 1, I embarked on my journey as a member of our Community of Saints. From the moment I arrived, I wanted to meld my philosophy with that of Notre Dame Prep. My vision for a Catholic college preparatory is that students are empowered to grow and mature. In short, I wanted our students to embrace NDP’s tradition of the three Rs: Reverence, Respect and Responsibility. In August 2017, we welcomed 945 students to Notre Dame Preparatory who came to us from more than 68 public and private middle schools across the Valley. We celebrated our 15th year as a Diocesan Catholic High School with our largest freshman class to date; the class of 2021. We are incredibly fortunate to have 85 dedicated full-time faculty members, most of whom have advanced degrees in their field of study. Fifty-five have earned master’s degrees and five have earned a Ph.D. Keeping God first, we began our year with Mass on the Feast of the Assumption and the debut of Father Kurt Perera as our new campus chaplain. I am delighted to work beside Fr. Kurt and glean from his wisdom and insight. His joy, kindness and ability to “rap” in his homilies resonate well with students and faculty alike. In October, we were named a Platinum Level Global High School by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) for our schoolwide charity and faith events. I credit Leslie Gjerstad, Director of Christian Service Learning at NDP, for this accomplishment. We are the only Platinum Level school in the Diocese of 2 SAINTS NATION | 2018-19

I am proud and amazed by the loving and giving nature of our student leaders and how much they willingly give of their time, talent and treasure. Our students showed respect for life by marching in both the local March for Life and the West Coast March for Life in San Francisco. We are unapologetically Catholic, always striving to protect the poor and vulnerable among us. Examples of Christian love are interwoven into NDP’s curriculum and co-curricular activities.
We are thankful for the mothers and fathers whose generosity, creativity and energy helped us raise funds at Culinary Festival, the 16th Annual NDP Golf Tournament, Annual Saints Fund, and ensured success at our gala Imagine Auction and Fashion Show. We are so very grateful for their support. Each year it is our tradition to honor parents, faculty or staff members with our Patron Saint Award for exemplary service to our school. Father Kurt Jade Perera Chaplain, Notre Dame Preparatory
We look forward to NDP’s future and will plan for exciting new projects including building a Fine Arts Center, an additional gymnasium, as well as additional classrooms. Exciting times at NDP! None of this however, would have been possible without the active and passionate participation of the entire NDP Community including parents, past and present, students and alumni. So my message to the entire NDP Community is simple: Please get involved and stay involved. We need you and the future of our fine institution depends on it. Along those lines, while I am stepping down as the Advisory School Board President, I have agreed to serve on the long range planning committee. I am proud of what we all have accomplished in 14 short years. With your help and continued prayers as well as Blessings from God, the next 14 years and beyond will be even better. As our beloved late Coach Bemis would say, “Let’s Get After It!”
DEAR MEMBERS OF THE NDP COMMUNITY,
With Appreciation,
Reflecting upon my time as an NDP School Board Member, I look back with a great sense of accomplishment and pride. We did a tremendous amount of good work during those 5 years including, raising enrollment to its highest level in the history of the institution, further stabilized the financial position of the school, finished an infrastructure project that included acquisition of additional land, the installation of a new “Loop Road” to enhance student safety and improve campus circulation, and finally; the construction of a state of the art sports stadium that houses football, soccer, lacrosse and track and field. We did all this without adding a single dollar of debt to the school’s long term bond! What a blessing!

SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY R3—Reverence, Respect and Responsibility are the pillars holding Notre Dame Preparatory up from its foundation; the love of Jesus Christ and virtues of our Blessed Mother Mary. The three Rs are integrated into every aspect of campus life at Notre Dame Prep. We believe that mutual cooperation and respect among our faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni and surrounding community is vital to Notre Dame Prep’s continued success as a premier Catholic college preparatory school. We fully trust in the tennents and mission of the Catholic Church to be disciples for our students, so that they might go forth and improve the world according to God’s will. We are inclusive and tolerant of people of all faith and socio-economic backgrounds and we treat everyone with reverence as those created in the divine image of God. Recognizing that the fundamental responsibility of parents and families as the primary instruments of faith and education, Notre Dame Prep acts in partnership to enhance that which is taught in the home through daily prayer, reflection and Mass. Our integrated education stimulates inquiring minds by combing the

ADMISSIONS EVENTS
MEET THE ACKERMAN FAMILY Pope Francis proclaims that the mission of the Christian community is to provide support to the educational mission of the family, particularly in the “light of the Word of God.” At Notre Dame Prep, we take the Pope’s words to heart. We value the important role parents play in educating their children, and we reinforce at school the faith formation taught in the home. The Ackerman family is a perfect example of how NDP and parents work together to strengthen students’ minds, bodies and souls. Robert and Donna Ackerman graduated their twin daughters Maris and Reagan in 2018. Their son Trevor is now a senior, and youngest son Bryce is a freshman. “We chose Notre Dame Prep so that our children can obtain a wellrounded education that includes religious formation,” Mrs. Ackerman said. The Ackermans were drawn to NDP for the many learning programs offered, from Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment to our Academic Support programs. “We know that children learn differently while progressing at their own speed, and I am grateful that NDP was able to accommodate all the different learning levels of my children,” she added. It is the care and diligence of NDP’s faculty that Trevor likes best. “You can really see how much effort the teachers put into their classes,” he said.

“They really care about their students’ learning and seeing them improve.” High academics, a committed faculty and forming a culture of humanitarianism met the Ackermans’ expectations. Once they experienced the school from the inside, they were happy to find a culture of acceptance

NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARS Becoming a National Merit Finalist is rigorous, competitive and requires a top score on the PSAT to qualify as a Semifinalist, who may then go on to compete for Finalist standing. In 2017-18, Notre Dame Prep produced four National Merit Finalists, Joshua Babu, Reilly Bettis, Brandon Figueroa and Tayler Smith. All winners of Merit Scholarship® awards are chosen from the Finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments— without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. Finalist’s academic record, information about the school’s curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership, and the Finalist’s own essay are all evaluated in deciding who will receive a scholarship. Of our four Finalists, Joshua Babu was a awarded a Merit Scholarship® and raised his standing to National Merit Scholar. In addition to our Finalists, three NDP students were named National Hispanic Scholars. They include Reilly Bettis, Anna Sera and Samantha Torre. Four students earned National Merit Commended status including, John Byrne, Sean Lillis, Anna Sera and Sarah Ziemann.

FORGING HAPPINESS THROUGH CHRISTIAN SERVICE We want nothing more for our students than for them to be truly happy. This is evident by the Catholic teaching that we are meant to make others happy, and in serving those in need, we become happier ourselves. At NDP, we waste no time in immersing our students in service from the beginning of their freshman year when they participate in Freshman Plunge. In 2017 each freshman theology class took a day to serve meals to the homeless in Phoenix. Experiences like these turn service into a passion, not an obligation.

In 2017-18 our student body logged more than 35,225 hours of service. The school community collected 13,162 diapers for the Arizona diaper banks, built a house for Habitat for Humanity, raised thousands of dollars for hurricane victims and provided an abundance of school supplies to children at St. Agnes School in Phoenix and to orphans in Tanzania and in Peru. Their accomplishments go on, and all their efforts earned Notre Dame Prep the designation of Platinum Level Global High School by Catholic Relief Services. We are grateful and overjoyed for the love and effort put forth by our students.

HOUSE SYSTEM
At NDP we engage in the formation of the entire person; mind, body and soul. We desire that our students leave here and go on to lead lives that reflect the example of Jesus Christ. Through the leadership of Director of House Faith Formation Mary Lou Lachvayder, we offer ways for students to develop skills to become the best versions of themselves and live authentic lives that are good, right and true. To help our students find their way at Notre Dame Prep, we have implemented the House

STUDENT CLUBS From Saints for Life to Nintendo Club, NDP offers a wide range of ways students can explore their interests while learning respect for others. Whether students want to stand up for a cause, showcase a talent or try something new, there is something for everyone with more than 40 clubs from which to choose. Christian Service League designs and implements service projects and mission trips in order to promote Christian witness in the lives of the poor and marginalized. “Christian Service League allows the NDP community to come together and help the people around us,” explains Christian Service League member, Anne Brinton (class of 2020). Supporting organizations such as Catholic Relief Services, Central Arizona Diaper Bank, St. Mary’s Food Bank and St. Vincent de Paul, NDP’s Christian Service League club members strive to make our world a better place by planning and implementing all the service projects that NDP is involved in throughout the year. Over Spring Break, members of the Medical Club journeyed to the Mayan peninsula in Mexico, offering hope and healing to patients who had traveled from afar to a local hospital in Valladolid. planting gardens, painting homes and playing with children. They’re called ‘Saints’ for a reason. At the 2017 Culinary Festival, the Baking Club had its own tent next to some of the best known restaurants in the Valley! Featuring three kinds of gourmet brownies, our NDP bakers prepared nearly 1,000 brownies in the school cafeteria, set up their tent, and proudly answered any questions people had at the Culinary Festival. Veterans’ Heritage Project connects students with veterans in their communities, then they conduct interviews and write the personal accounts of heroism and service to our country. Their stories are then published in the yearly edition of Since You Asked. The goal is to preserve veterans’ stories for all time and for students to gain respect for our country and those who serve it. The VHP club is entering its third year on campus and already is the fastest growing state chapter. Club moderator Mrs. Heisler was named the 2017-18 VHP Teacher-ofthe-Year, a national award. NDP clubs offer students the ability to make friends with people who share a passion all while developing critical life skills. “There are so many different clubs. If you can’t find a club best fit for you, students can even start their own club at NDP,” shares Bailey Benson (class of 2020).

NDP AND PARENTS IN PARTNERSHIP Notre Dame Prep parents are invaluable to the success of our school. Our Mothers’ Guild and Dads’ Club are driving forces for many of the initiatives we, as a school, take on. Both of our parent associations outdid themselves in 2017-18. Dads’ Club, whose pillars include Engagement, Formation and Service, was instrumental in preparing our campus for the annual open house, staffing volunteers for our Back-to-School and New Saints Family barbecues, selling water at all home football games, and being friendly ambassadors to visiting and new families on campus. New last year, Dads’ Club instituted a monthly hike and outdoor Mass with Father Kurt that tripled in number of hikers from the first to last hike of the year. Oftentimes, strangers on the Gateway Loop Trail joined in the Mass and became regulars. Now, that is true witness to Christ!

“Guiding, Giving and Grace” is the motto of our Mothers’ Guild and they do all three very well. During the 2017-18 school year, they guided our school parents to give generously to our school-wide charity drives and fundraisers. They gave their time to create a comprehensive school directory, served adults with special needs at Scottsdale Training and Rehabilitation Services (STARS) and worked beside students at Feed My Starving Children. They showed appreciation to our faculty and staff and celebrated our students with surprises throughout the year. Through their grace, our sacred spaces were clean and ready for students, and ensured that prayer requests were attended to. This dynamic association houses several fun clubs for NDP moms to expand their own social and spiritual life as well.

who demonstrate a need for extra time and help to master skills or take tests. The 2017-18 school year was full of academic accomplishments, which included enhancing institutional infrastructure and student support programs. We introduced the Richard West Family Center for Collaboration and Innovation, a space where students work collaboratively on project-based assignments, use advanced technology and study individually or in groups. The CCI was expanded over the summer to house NDP’s STEM program, computer and digital arts classroom and media lab. Our student support specialist, Mary Ellen Anderson began her work at NDP in 2008. Students who manage various learning differences are individually evaluated so that they can master skills, score high on tests and complete the abundance of work required to graduate from Notre Dame Prep. In the past 10 years, Anderson’s program grew from 25 to 80 students. In 2018 she graduated 22 seniors. Of those, 21 will be going to four-year schools including Pepperdine University, ASU Barrett, The Honors College, Auburn University and many more. Anderson retired in June, but the student Academic Support program will continue and expand in our new Learning Resource Center Lounge, which was made possible through donations to our Annual Saints Fund. We are grateful that through the generosity of the Notre Dame Prep community we can continue our mission and the transformative work of educating all students who desire a Catholic education. We will passionately pursue ways through our academic programs, to enlighten and encourage our students to seek truth, knowledge and to live a life for Christ.

ATHLETICS Athletics offer students a venue to exercise and hone their God-given talents. Notre Dame Prep student athletes learn responsibility to their team and time management for their studies. Many of our student athletes excel in both athletics and academics. Twenty-five Saints signed NCAA letters of intent to play their chosen sport at the collegiate level during the 2017-18 school year. It was an incredible year for our teams and individual athletes.

Fall sports The year began with our varsity football team, under the leadership of new head coach George Prelock, finishing the season undefeated with their only loss coming in the state championship game. The team’s runner-up finish came 10 years after the Saints first football state championship. Several players on this team achieved local and national honors for their talent on the field and in the classroom. Our golf program continued to perform at a high level. The girls team finished in second place in the state finals while the boys team finished in third place. In the pool, the Saints swim and dive teams showed they were a force to be reckoned with. The boys placed fourth overall and the girls placed fifth. In the individual events, State Champion Ansel Averitte went undefeated all year in the 50-meter freestyle, and Alexa Markl, placed third in the 100-meter butterfly. Coach Sara Fox led our highly-ranked girls volleyball team to a fifth place finish in the state tournament, after many exciting and very close matches. Last year was Fox’s final year as head coach. Cross country is a team that prays together and stays together mile after mile. They sent one runner to represent the Saints in the state cross country meet.

Spring sports Girls lacrosse continued to grow and improve their play, making it to the playoffs for the first time last spring. Boys volleyball is another team on the rise. They missed the playoffs, but played in nail-biting matches. This team has gone from a recreational-type team to a highly competitive one. The girls beach volleyball team is stacked with talent, but is still finding its footing in the sand. Four Saints competed in the state Track and Field meet. Two made it to the podium; Jack Cissne tied for second with a jump of 6’2” and Omasan Omatseye placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.77, a personal best and new NDP school record. Girls tennis finished in the top four in the state tournament with a young, competitive team. They are consistently competing at the top of the girl’s bracket. Boys tennis finished among the top eight teams in the state tournament. While Saints softball improved on the field, they excelled in the classroom as four players earned Sports 360AZ All-Academic honors, which were based on academic and athletic statistics during the 2018 season. Varsity baseball fell slightly short of their quest for a state championship when they were eliminated in the semifinals against Verrado High School. Verrado players had just learned of the death of one of their pitchers the night before the elimination game. Even though our Saints lost the semifinal game, they showed respect and compassion for Verrado before, during and after the game. 44 SAINTS NATION | 2018-19

Choir Wowing everyone at the Spring Fine Arts Festival, our combined choirs delivered a stunning finale singing My Shot from the Broadway hit Hamilton. All year our choir department enjoyed bringing audiences popular numbers from the stage and screen. They brought back childhood memories from Lady and the Tramp, Mary Poppins and The Little Mermaid. In every concert the singers appeared to be having a great time and stretched themselves as artists; taking on difficult songs and choreography. All year, the Liturgical Choir brought beauty and joy to the Mass as they led the student body in song. They sang traditional hymns along with contemporary songs of worship and praise. These students mastered the highly challenging Salve Regina in Latin, receiving

applause from the student body after each Mass. The entire student body joins in when the choir sings Good Good Father, filling the gymnasium with exuberant vocals. Last year was Deanna Hudson’s first year as choir director and her talent and expertise was evident in the degree of difficulty that her students learned in a short time.

Guitar Orchestra In 2017-18 our guitar orchestra continued to wow our community with Beattle’s classics such as Day Tripper and Hey Jude, among other selections. Our guitar students are exposed to a variety genres from classic rock to contemporary works written specifically for our guitar orchestra director, Phillip Hemmo, by current-day composers. Advanced guitar orchestra is a Dual Enrollment course for those students who wish to challenge themselves and learn ambitious musical pieces. This group of young musicians was invited to Grand Canyon University’s studio to record a few pieces of music while receiving college credit. They also attended a workshop at Glendale Community College where the students had a positive experience learning from professor Chuck Hulihan, who challenged our students to push their skills to a higher level. Taking Hulihan’s advice to heart, the students continued to master new music to share with our community at a lunchtime concert and at the NDP Spring Fine Arts Festival.
Jazz Ensemble The NDP Jazz Ensemble is proof that band is cool. This group of talented musicians sounds like a professional big band jazz ensemble. They blow out big tunes from Michael Bublé to hard rock. The students in this audition-only group are taught to master difficult music and to play with great intensity. In addition to regaling audiences at the Fall and Spring Fine Arts Festivals, they also entertained all the visitors attending our Annual Grandparents Day with their big band sound. With service to others as their focus, many of our choral, guitar and jazz ensemble students join the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Last March, this group organized a benefit concert and raised more than $2,000 in 90 minutes for Rosie’s House, an organization that provides free music instruction for low-income children. 2018-19 | SAINTS NATION 47

Dance Our dance program is ever-expanding, serving more students, male and female, each year. Students learn techniques from ballet, jazz, hip-hop and more. Many routines are choreographed by students as they increase their knowledge of movement and rhythm. At the Fine Arts Festivals, our dance groups drew large crowds and impressed audiences with their grace, flexibility and precision. A fan-favorite was a high-energy performance to a medley from High School Musical. Our dance students and faculty are committed to Christian service by spreading the joy of dance to children struggling with life-threatening illnesses. Each year they travel to Phoenix Children’s Hospital and dance for the children there.
Visual Arts The visual arts students at Notre Dame Prep are consistently creating fantastic pieces of art for the Fine Arts Festivals and the Annual Art Showcase at Vi at Silverstone. Through sharing their art and spending time with the residents at Vi, our students have helped form a bond of friendship and community between our two institutions. In 2017-18 we offered classes in painting, drawing, pottery, digital art and photography. Our advanced painting class participated in the Memory Project where each student was given a photograph of a Syrian refugee child to paint. The finished portraits were then sent to Syria and delivered to the children who have very little to call their own. The Memory Project organizers produced a video of some of the children receiving their portraits and shared the video with NDP. The joy on the children’s faces was worth 1,000 words and warmed the hearts of our student artists.
