A REFLECTION FROM FR. KURT PERERA This past year presented us with challenges and opportunities. For most, the pandemic has been difficult. For others, it has been an opportunity to reboot.

I learned a great lesson from 15-year-old Jonathan Bryan, a boy with cerebral palsy who started a #ThankfulNotFearful campaign on his twitter. He encouraged millions of people to find things to be thankful for each day rather than fearful.

Here is Jonathon’s prayer, and one I’d like to share with our community. “I realize that to wish away the time we are in is to miss the value and lessons each season brings. Contentment lies in living in the moment we’re in, with our hearts open to our Lord,” he said.

Faith in education is vitally important because it gives life meaning. It is at the core of what we do at Notre Dame Prep and it provides students with an opportunity to reboot and refresh. As students grow in faith, is it our goal that they will go forth and share that faith with others through love and service in accordance with God’s will.

As St. Mother Teresa taught, “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” Each year many of our students grow in their faith through service to others. Collectively, the student body logged more than 23,000 Christan service hours in the 2020-21 school year, including collecting food, clothing and handmade blankets for the poor and marginalized in our local community and abroad.

NDP sophomore Evan Kobley secured a grant for $3,000 for Mr. Hemmo’s “Guitar to You” musical outreach program. The money came from the Arizona Society Children of the American Revolution, an organization Evan not only belongs to, but is the 2021 outgoing president! Evan spoke all over Arizona from September 2020 to April 2021 raising money and awareness for the arts. On May 5, 2021, he presented the check to Mr. Phil Hemmo, music instructor and Director of Music Outreach for NDP.

Students in the St. Thomas Aquinas Scholars Program at Notre Dame Prep collected more than 1,800 frozen turkeys for St. Mary’s Food Bank in Phoenix. “We heard that the need for turkeys this year has increased because of COVID-19,” said NDP sophomore Kaitlyn Matura. “St. Mary’s Food Bank estimated a need for 15,000 turkeys this year and we wanted to help them reach their goal.”

If the COVID pandemic taught us anything in the past year, it is just how many germs are around us. As a junior at NDP, teen entrepreneur Nic Brown thought there had to be a way to keep personal devices clean, without harmful chemicals. His solution—powerful microbe killing UV-C light. He started his own business called Connect UV which manufactures sterilizing charging carts for multiple devices and desktop sterilizer/chargers for single devices. “I first discovered UV-C light when I was researching cleaning methods for my car detailing company,” Brown said, “When COVID hit, I realized that I was in a position to help solve the problem of harmful germs on day-to-day items.” Last year, Nic donated three large charging carts and more than 50 desktop units to Notre Dame Prep to help keep our community safe and healthy.

NDP freshman Ava Handel combined her love of fashion with her desire to help medical heroes and patients during the pandemic. Using upcycled materials from high-end fashion brands, she and her younger sister Chloe began selling designer masks to raise money for blood cancer research. During the 2020-21 school year, they raised more than $65,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. They founded Maskup4bloodcancer.com as a service to show support for one of their elementary school teachers whose husband was diagnosed with leukemia. They took what they learned from STEM, art and yearbook classes to build their website and establish their brand and social media presence. With brands such as Gucci, Chanel and Louis Vuitton, the Handels prove that you can be safe and fashionable at the same time!

PARENTS IN PARTNERSHIP We are blessed with parents who want to volunteer and work to advance the mission of Notre Dame Prep. Although the pandemic forced us to close our campus to volunteers, our Mothers’ Guild and Dads’ Club used creativity to find ways to gather and keep our community together while apart.

The Mothers’ Guild partnered with local businesses and hosted pop-up fundraisers with Chick-fil-A, Azadi Fine Rugs and Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria. They also held monthly virtual book clubs and webinars to stay connected. As things improved on the world stage, with the advent of the COVID vaccine, both Dads’ Club and Mothers’ Guild were able to hold end-of-year in-person celebrations.

SAINTS RUN TO RAISE AWARENESS FOR TEEN MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES Notre Dame Prep hosted the First Annual Saints 5K and Virtual 5K on Saturday, March 20 to help raise awareness for teen mental health issues, especially as they relate to the pandemic. The event was the first large gathering the school was able to host last school year.

More than 150 NDP students and staff members gathered at the school, in masks and abiding by social distance guidelines, to run the 3.2-mile fun run around campus. Nearly 200 additional runners signed up to participate virtually.

The event raised more than $7,000 for notMYkid to expand their teen empowerment programs called amplif[i]. “We are so grateful to Notre Dame Prep for putting on this event,” said Shane Watson, communications officer at notMYkid. “No one hesitates to talk about their broken leg, but teens are so hesitant to talk about depression, anxiety or other serious mental health issues.

The pandemic has caused teen anxiety to increase due to being isolated or feelings of falling behind in school. “The struggle is real,” said then-NDP President/Principal Jill Platt. “This event gave our students the power to help and the opportunity to have some fun in the process. I would say that was a success.” notMYkid is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides children and families with truly lifesaving programs, support, resources and education. NDP has invited notMYkid to hold seminars for both teens and parents over the past two years to help families make healthy choices.

NDP LIVE!, our multi-media club, won several Arizona Interscholastic Press Association (AIPA) awards for their work in video editing, news anchoring and promotional video production.

On Fat Tuesday, the club helped raise more than $86,000 in one day during our Mardi Gras Giving Day livestream.

Although they could not host their annual HopeKids Day on campus, the HopeKids Club worked to brighten the days of children suffering from life-threatening health issues through acts of kindness and service. Members of HopeKids Club spent hours making activity bags, writing notes of encouragement, and delivered them to children who were homebound or in the hospital.

Below: Our largest club on campus, the NDP Baking Club, baked and delivered sweet treats for HopeKids and festive Mardi Gras-themed confections for all on campus during our Mardi Gras Giving Day. They also made desserts for Alumni Association and Mothers’ Guild Events.

The NDP Chapter of Veterans Heritage Project continued their work to preserve American history by interviewing and authoring stories about veterans. Six NDP students had their work published in the 17th Edition of “Since You Asked,” the official publication of Veterans Heritage Project. The books are published in the Library of Congress and can be purchased at www.ndpsaints.org/culture/clubs-and-activities/vhpbook.

NATIONAL MERIT AND OTHER ACADEMIC ACHIVEMENTS Avery Kaye became the first Notre Dame Prep student to be presented with a Carson Scholar. Carson Scholars must be nominated by a teacher, have a minimum GPA of 3.75 and display humanitarian qualities through community service. Her trophy will be displayed at NDP for years to come. We hope to add more names to it in the future! Mrs. Platt was on hand to help celebrate this amazing accomplishment.

In May 2021, Kiarra Welch was named valedictorian, graduating at the top of the class of 2021. Elizabeth Zygmut earned the salutatorian spot. The two received their awards at small ceremony in Our Lady of Grace Garden on NDP’s campus. TEACHING IN THE TIME OF COVID New technologies and a revised bell schedule were key changes in providing us the means to continue to provide safe and quality education to our students during the 2020-21 school year.

Adding integrated monitors to each class and instructing our teachers on how to use them kept our students learning during the time that we were fully online or when we were hybrid with half the students in the classroom and half online.

A new block bell schedule was implemented to reduce the number of passing periods each day while at the same time providing a more college-type approach to teaching.

Our biggest academic accomplishment, according to Lisa McMorrow, Director of Counseling, was that we were able to open our campus to inperson learning and remain open from September to the end of the school Fr. Phil joined the staff in the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) to help meet the needs of students with learning differences in math. The ACE features various academic inclusion programs to foster the success of many types of learners.

Our maintenance team created a garden space so that our environmental science students could learn a lesson in sustainability by planting a garden. The garden contained all the vegetables and herbs one would need to make salsa; tomatoes, onions, jalapeno peppers and cilantro.

In April, Deacon Carbone’s engineering students built solar ovens and participated in the Solar Oven Throw Down. Students were judged on how accurately their thermodynamic calculations predicted the actual temperature achieved in their ovens.

They also enjoyed a nice snack of pizza rolls at the end of class!

Theology students painted prayer rocks to put on their pillows in the morning to remind them to say their evening prayers and to put on their phones at night to help them form the habit of saying their morning prayers.

RESPONSIBILITY | NOTRE DAME PREPARATORY

Junior John Ruvo ran a blistering 10.69 personal best and school record in the finals of the 100 meters at the AIA Division III State Track and Field Championships to highlight a memorable night at Desert Vista High School. He finished the meet by posting his second personal best of the night, clocking a 21.87 in the 200 meters to place third overall in a virtual dead heat.

William Bansberg, class of 2021, was named the Division III Swimmer of the Year, last year. Bansberg solidified his resume as one of the top swimmers in Arizona by winning two individual state titles: the 100M backstroke and 100M fly.

He is currently studying and competing at The Ohio State University.

Both NDP hockey teams (D1 and D3) won the state championship for their division during the 2020-21 school year. The D1 team went on to compete in the Chipotle USA Hockey High School Nationals at the Ralston Arena in Omaha, where they advanced to the quarterfinals.

The 2020 NDP girls volleyball team had a nearly perfect season with the only loss in their 17-1 season coming in the State Championship match against Salpointe Catholic. The team won many accolades including the 4A West Region Championship, four players were named to the All-Conference 1st team, junior Madison White was named 4A Conference Offensive Player of the Year, and head coach Holly McLean was named 4A West Valley Region Coach of the Year.

BUILDING A HOME FOR THE ARTS A bright spot for our performing arts department during the 2020-21 school year was watching the rise of the St. Catherine of Bologna Performing Arts Center.

Forging through a pandemic year was a challenge for our visual and performing arts programs as it was difficult to teach painting, choir, dance and instrumental music classes online. Our teachers and students persevered despite the lack of opportunities to perform in front of an audience and seized any opportunity they could to showcase their talents.

In April, NDP obtained special permission to allow our production of “Little Women” to be performed in the nearly finished St. Catherine of Bologna Performing Arts Center.

All year long, students, staff and faculty watched as the building came together into a beautiful space for performing arts and digital video programs. The performing arts center officially opened at the beginning of the 2021-22 school year.

The NDP Jazz Ensemble regaled seniors and parents at the Senior Awards Ceremony with great hits such as “Diggin’ on James Brown,” featuring Brooke Pauley ’21, on lead vocals.

Corporate and individual tax credit contributions made a tremendous impact on tuition assistance at Notre Dame Preparatory High School.
