MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON AND THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends and Partners,
2021 was yet another year of managing variants of COVID-19 and other global challenges. But the successes of our partner, PIND, further emphasized why our mutual adherence to sustainable solutions and innovations matter [including PIND programs in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs)]. As a long-time, independent development resource in the Niger Delta, PIND’s work has continued to improve lives and livelihoods through economic development and peacebuilding programs that deliver financing, information, linkages, mindsets, skills, technologies, and tools.

The year was also marked by the successful transition at the organization’s helm with Tunji Idowu’s appointment as PIND’s new executive director in July 2021 upon incumbent executive director Dr. Dara Akala’s retirement in December 2021. Tunji served as PIND’s deputy executive director since 2016; he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role. Idowu was chosen for his skilled leadership, stakeholder engagement knowledge, management experience, and technical experience. His vision is to build upon the peace and prosperity work done since 2010 through strengthened and expanded programming. Together, PIND & NDPI want to establish a larger network of public, private, and social sector collaborators, investors, and partners.
PIND’s impactful and transformational 2021 results included:
• USD 26.48 million/NGN 10.84 billion injected into local agriculture, business, and technology economies by PIND partners in the public sector (governments), private sector, and donor agencies
• USD 1.1 million/NGN 466.7 million saved on electricity costs due to access to solar-based energy sources; with women-run households and businesses making up 62% of first-time beneficiaries
• 10,526 new full-time jobs facilitated in the agro-allied and renewable energy sectors; over 2/3 (66%) of the jobs were occupied by women
• 577 peace actors (1/3 women) mitigated local conflict using gained skills from the PIND Peacebuilding program
• 2,070 people (62% women) from 645 businesses and households were provided with access to reliable, renewable, and affordable electricity for the first time
In 2021, NDPI & PIND also focused on excellent governance, financial transparency, and satisfactory third-party audits.
Underlying all PIND’s work is the idea that–regardless of age, ability, education, gender, location, or status–there is opportunity for all in the Niger Delta. As funding opportunities are being redirected out of the Niger Delta, it is imperative that multi-sector stakeholders unite to continue serving the region’s people and communities. We have come a long way since 2010 and refuse to lose the momentum that has drastically changed the Niger Delta.
In this annual report, you will enjoy key highlights about PIND, the landscape they operate in, the results they achieved, our work together, personal stories from program beneficiaries, and much more. If you are interested in delving further into PIND’s work, we encourage you to read the full PIND 2021 Annual Report or visit PINDfoundation.org. We hope this knowledge and information encourages you to consider collaborating, partnering, and working with PIND & NDPI.
Happy reading!
