The legislative session that forgot Ag

I

n North Dakota, we rely heavily on the economic success of agriculture and families that farm and ranch the land. Agriculture has been the mainstay of our economy since statehood and will remain our economic driver long into the future. While many other industries are important, they do not provide the sustainable long-term economics or new wealth that agriculture generates.

This begs the question, why didn’t legislators focus some effort this session on ensuring agriculture has the tools and economic drivers it needs to be successful? NDSU’s economic multiplier for agriculture averages between 3.7 times to 4.49 based on the crop type. It suggests we would want farms and ranches to be successful because they enhance North Dakota’s economy.

It is important to support diversity and new business and industry in the state. It is more important to support our base industry. If we give tax incentives and tax breaks to only new shiny objects, we risk losing our base. Agriculture is struggling and any business that has a struggling primary sector should work to determine avenues to enhance the industry’s ability to be profitable.

Our legislature chose to undermine agriculture research when it cut funding by 13.5 percent, Extension by 14 percent, and full-time employee

(FTE) reductions. The reduction in FTEs amounts to less research and Extension services.

With budget shortfalls this session, legislators maintained prior tax breaks for some industries but voted to pass higher property taxes on farmland. Rather than investing in value-added agriculture, we took more profits from the state Mill and Elevator to balance the budget. The Mill and Elevator is a great example of a tool that enhances farm income. Legislators also siphoned more profits from the Bank of North Dakota, which could have been used to develop a program like what Minnesota legislators passed to give tax credits to landowners who sell or rent to young producers.

North Dakota agriculture is facing a silent economic crisis. We need to look at the needs of our most sustainable industry – agriculture – and create opportunities for success. This can be done with tax incentives, value-added and processing projects, investment in research, new logistic concepts, farm program support, crop insurance support, and other new ideas. No business would let its mainstay industry die a slow death without a series of strategic planning sessions and investment to help it become profitable. It is time for North Dakota’s elected officials to step up and support family farming and ranching in our state.

Below is a look at the bills NDFU tracked during the 65th legislative session, which wrapped up in early May.

CORPORATE FARMING LAW

No corporate farming bills were introduced during the 65th Legislative Assembly.

AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH

SB 2020 is the appropriation bill for NDSU agriculture research and Extension. The ag research budget received a 13.5 percent decrease and the Extension budget received a 14 percent decrease resulting in a reduction of 22 research and 11 Extension full-time employees (FTEs). Finally, none of the 2017-2019 SBARE priorities were funded.

The House sought to remove the FTE for soil conservation, but it was added back into the budget during conference committee.

QUALITY OF LIFE AND EDUCATION

HB 1012, the Human Services budget bill, includes the continuation of Medicaid Expansion and more than $3.7 billion in total funding. This continuation allows the state to receive its 95 percent federal funding match to assist in the expense of covering vulnerable individuals.

Currently, almost 20,000 North Dakotans receive health insurance through Medicaid Expansion.

HB 1324 and HB 1310 are the bills that dealt with education policy and funding. This $2.3 billion budget was largely held harmless due to the passage of Measure 2. Although transportation funding looked to be facing a significant cut, it was eventually restored in the amount of $4.1 million in the Senate.

The Department of Transportation budget was housed in SB 2012. The amended budget has a $66.4 million reduction – a 22-percent decrease in operating expenses from the $295.8 million budget. The budget includes the closing of eight maintenance shops: Starkweather, Finley, Fessenden, Gackle, Litchville, New England, Courtenay and Mayville. Lawmakers tried to attach an amendment to require the DOT to keep the shops through mid-2019. That amendment ultimately failed. In conference committee, amendments required a study of maintenance shops’ services and language that states that, “if an employee continues to live near a closed shop, they will place a snowplow there during the months of November through March.”

Finally, property at these shops cannot be sold by the DOT for the next two years.

LANDOWNER RIGHTS

SB 1151, also known as the “Spill Bill” was amended to ensure that oil sites without impermeable liners beneath would not be included in the bill, and that oil site inspection reports would be listed on the Department of Mineral Resources

website. The ND Petroleum Council introduced an amendment to remove “impermeable,” and instead cite rules written on the definition of impermeable liners. As a result of this amendment, NDFU once again opposed the bill citing its favor of writing the definition into the law, as agency rules are easier changed without legislative action. The bill ultimately passed and was signed by the governor.

SB 2225, in its original form, removed the requirement of a landowner to post his/her private property. It was amended to create a pilot project in which an electronic registry was to be developed

by N.D. Game and Fish for five counties selected by the governor. The bill ultimately failed in the Senate.

SB 2236 made the North Dakota Pipeline Restoration and Reclamation Oversight Program a continuing program. It also made those surface owners and renters who use the program exempt from open public records. This program started as a pilot session during the 2015 session. It’s also funded through the ND Ag Commissioner’s budget, which is where the program is housed.

The bill ultimately passed and was signed by the governor.

PROPERTY TAX RELIEF

SB 2206 was a bill that addressed the delivery of permanent property tax relief to the citizens of North Dakota through the state picking up the expense of funding county social services. The bill originally provided relief for the existing 12-percent property tax buy-down, and then removed those county mills, which delivers permanent property tax reform. Governor Burgum also included this policy priority in his budget as the mechanism to deliver property tax relief. The bill passed.

A “hog house” amendment, introduced in the House, replaced the entire bill’s language with a study over the 2017-18 interim. While the bill was eventually replaced with a pilot program of the state picking up social service costs, the “hold harmless” dollars for counties were left out. The bill ultimately passed and was signed by the governor.

STATE AG POLICY

HB 1009 included the Agriculture Commissioner’s budget. While the department did lose four FTEs, it did receive dollars for the National Agricultural Genotyping Center in Fargo.

The Pipeline Restoration and Reclamation program received $200,000.

SB 2013 contained the land department budget.

In this bill, the Outdoor Heritage Fund is capped at $10 million. It also contains amendments that would reduce dollars to the townships in oil country by $17 million, and transfer those dollars to non-oil townships. That provision was ultimately vetoed by Governor Doug Burgum.

SB 2014, the North Dakota Industrial

SESSION FINISHES

Commission budget bill, includes the appropriations for the North Dakota State Mill and Elevator. While the Senate made minor changes to the bill, the House removed authority for the Mill and Elevator to continue to use its employee profit-sharing program and changed the percentage of dollars going into the general fund to 90 percent of revenue, with the remaining 10 percent to be used at the elevator. In conference committee, the compromise was made for 70 percent of profits to go to the general fund, 30 percent to stay with the elevator, and for profit-sharing to remain untouched.

SB 2019 was the budget for the State Board for Career and Technical Education and contained the budget for Adult Farm Management. Although conversations around this program slated cuts to be more substantial, the Senate and House ultimately agreed to cut the program at $80,000.

SB 2263 simplified the drainage and water management process in North Dakota to make it equitable for producers across the state by reducing roadblocks related to permits and fees. A similar bill, HB 1390, ended up being the vehicle for this legislation and passed.

Because hemp growing still requires a significant amount of regulation in order to grow it, the costs of those regulations have risen dramatically. SB 1240 adds an industrial hemp applicant fee of $250 and increases the per acre fee from $5 to $40 to grow hemp in North Dakota. The Ag Department says that this cost is due to expenditures to oversee industrial hemp growing and harvest seasons and processing. Expenditures will be primarily for laboratory testing, travel, supplies, printing and postage.

Many hemp producers attended the hearing and opposed the bill due to the significantly increased fees and urged the state to look at loosening up program rules. The bill was eventual amended to include a $150 applicant fee and a per acre fee of $25. The bill ultimately passed and was signed by the governor.

SB 1282 sought to make changes to the way that North Dakota commodity groups function. The original bill regulated who commodity groups could contract with for program work, how they could determine use for checkoff dollars and gave the Agriculture Commissioner the ability to recommend to the governor the removal of a commodity group board member for cause. It was eventually turned into a study and then killed in the House.

SB 1321 defines the movement of commodities at harvest time for the purpose of overweight permits.

Amendments have been introduced to further the define where the truck is traveling to in order to allow for more movement than simply traveling from field to elevator. The bill ultimately passed and was signed by the governor.

OTHER BILLS OF INTEREST

SB 2135 created a committee to study the initiated measure process in North Dakota. The committee will be made up of House and Senate members, representatives from the Secretary of State’s office, citizens of North Dakota and member organizations. Farmers Union is one of the membership organizations named in the bill that will be allowed to appoint an individual to the committee.

In conference committee, the House and Senate spent most of its time discussing the makeup of the committee. While the House conferees were against adding a labor and a tribal appointee, the committee finally added a member from “an organization that represents employees.” A tribal appointee was not added. The bill ultimately passed and was signed by the governor.

SB 2289 was heard in front of the House Agriculture Committee. This bill created protections for North Dakota implement dealers and addresses such issues as mandatory equipment and parts purchases, payment chargebacks, unfair performance requirements and dealership terminations. In testimony, NDFU said it believed that this bill would prevent further consolidation of implement dealers in the state, leading to guarantees of service at vital times of the year. The National Association of Manufacturers cited their opposition of government getting in the middle of contractual relationships. John Deere also provided testimony against the bill. The bill ultimately passed overwhelmingly.

SB 2327 is the bill that would remove the environmental section from the health department and create its own agency. NDFU testified that while the board make-up acknowledges the many sectors of energy by their number of allotted seats on the advisory council, agriculture is similarly affected and will only receive one. NDFU asked for additional seats similar to energy’s number of seats, and agriculture was eventually awarded those seats. The bill ultimately passed and was signed by the governor.

HB 1348 dealt with the seizure of animals. Once a law enforcement officer consults a licensed veterinarian that is approved by the board of animal health, they can petition for a court order or act without notice to remove an animal they believe is being neglected, abused or treated cruelly.

The bill ultimately passed and was signed by the governor.

SCR 4009 is a concurrent resolution requesting the legislative management to consider studying the formation of an independent, nonpartisan redistricting commission for the decennial redrawing of legislative district boundaries in North Dakota. The resolution received a “do not pass” recommendation and ultimately failed to be adopted.

DONATED TICKETS HELP LANGDON FAMILY BUY SLEDS

At 10 years old, Tucker Olson enjoys being on the ice as much as the next hockey-crazed kid.

But it’s much harder for Tucker, as he has spina bifida. Tucker is wheelchair-bound, but is obsessed with the sport, not unusual in the Olson family of Langdon.

“We all love hockey,” said Tonia, Tucker’s mother. “It started with his older brother (Tanner).

He’s been a huge fan of going to games his brother’s in.”

To foster that love, the Olsons took Tucker to Minot multiple times to play “sled hockey” which allows Tucker to move around on the ice and play hockey. In fact, “Anybody with mobility issues can play. It can be for the blind or any disability,” Tonia said.

The Olsons wanted to give Tucker a chance to play a little closer to home, so a fundraiser was put together to raise money for sleds. Farmers Union Insurance agent Russell Stremick donated four UND hockey tickets to the silent auction.

“We’re in a small community, and it’s like a family,” Stremick said. “When you can do something that brightens up a day for a great kid, it’s a no-brainer.”

The Olson family raised $13,000 to put toward seven sleds including Tucker’s. There is also enough money to make the local hockey arena handicap-accessible.

But the icing on the cake was a video message from professional hockey player Zach Parise of the Minnesota Wild to Tucker. Parise is a former UND skater.

The entire night was incredible, Tonia said.

“It was crazy,” she said. “We were stunned — I think there was crying, but hardly any speaking.

Who could speak? Especially when they present you with a $13,000 check.”

wanted to try the sleds and possibly be part of a local team with Tucker. It drew the attention of a sled-hockey coach from right across the border, only 40 minutes from Langdon.

“He had a wealth of knowledge,” Tonia said. “He has a team in Canada called the Sledgehammers.”

Tucker plans on joining the Canadian team with games against teams in Minot and Fargo a possibility in the future. For now, he’s cruising the ice, where he is in complete control.

“The independence it gives him, instead of that wheelchair,” Tonia said. “He doesn’t have to depend on someone else to push him, and it’s really good exercise.

“Everyone in Langdon was so supportive of this.

It really means a lot.”

GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS MAY 7-13 FARMERS UNION YOUTH WEEK Governor Doug Burgum proclaimed May 7-13, 2017, as Farmers Union Youth Week, citing North Dakota Farmers Union’s dedication to enhancing leadership abilities in young people and cooperative education.

“The youth of our state are North Dakota’s most valuable resource,” wrote Burgum in the signed proclamation. “Educating young people about the cooperative business model in present-day BURGUM commerce is vital to North Dakota’s overall economy from a local, national, and international perspective, as well as our state’s agricultural industry.”

NDFU conducts county-sponsored classes and

summer camps for rural and urban kids. More than 1,000 youths attend Farmers Union camps annually, which get underway in June for kids in grades 3-12.

At Farmers Union Camp, youth organize and operate their own cooperative – a camp store – as part of the organization’s educational focus on cooperatives. Other activities include water games, theme nights, sports, a campfire, talent show, dancing, games, skits, a camp project, and banquet.

Specially trained counselors facilitate activities and supervise campers at 14 different four- and five-day camps held throughout the summer at sites near Valley City and Elgin.

AGENTS HONORED FOR PERFORMANCE, YEARS OF SERVICE AT ANNUAL MEETING Farmers Union Insurance agents from across North Dakota met May 16-18 in Jamestown for the annual statewide meeting.

The event featured speakers on products, leadership, sales, customer service and employee development. Agents learned more about all aspects of the insurance field from product representatives and managers.

Agents were recognized for years of service and top performances at a banquet the opening night. Most of the awards were presented by General Manager Mark Anderson.

RLND MAKES Smaaladen takes up cause during 18-month leadership course

eanna Smaaladen’s excitement turned to nervousness when she glanced at the roster of her Rural Leadership North Dakota (RLND) class in 2015.

“I looked on there, and there’s a state senator and auditors on here — all of these I would call important people,” said Smaaladen, who is secretary-treasurer for Grand Forks County Farmers Union. “It was intimidating. How will I fit in?”

At the first meeting, Jeanna sat down next to Larry Luick, a state senator from Fairmount.

“He’s the kindest, most gentlest person I ever met,” Jeanna said. “From that point on, it was great.”

More than a year later, Jeanna is set to graduate in November from RLND, an 18-month leadership development program designed to encourage and train North Dakotans to play a bigger role in their communities. It’s put on by the North Dakota State University Extension Service.

The program involves traveling around North Dakota as well as to Washington, D.C., and there is also an international trip. Jeanna and Divide County Farmers Union President Devin Jacobson were part of Class VII, and the program is accepting applications for its eighth class until June 30. Tuition is $4,000 and can be paid in two installments.

RLND Program Director Marie Hvidsten said there are three direct goals of the program: Networking, improving leadership skills and understanding North Dakota so they can improve the quality of life in their community, city, state, etc. Hvidsten said a simple conversation with alumni can be enough to convince a fence-sitter to apply.

“They often use phrases like ‘life-changing’

and ‘best thing I’ve done,’” Hvidsten said.

“It helps with confidence-building. We’ve had a few folks run for statewide office, and that’s been terrific. If anybody has interest, check it out with our alumni. They’re likely somewhere in your community or close by.

And if there are any concerns on the financial end, still apply and we’ll try to help them figure it out.”

Count Devin in among those appreciative of the experience. He wasn’t aware of the scope of agriculture in North Dakota, but that changed with farm tours on the eastern half of the state.

“We learn a lot about communities and what’s going on around the state,” Devin said. “It’s been very good with everybody exchanging ideas with how to make your community better, and Marie has been letting us run with it.”

An international trip is also part of the program, and the class went to Thailand and Vietnam. Jeanna said the class toured fields to understand local agriculture and infrastructure.

But Jeanna also was taken aback by her own state, particularly the energy development in western North Dakota.

“As a young girl, I traveled through North Dakota. But in the past 10-15 years, I haven’t gone too much past Bismarck,” she said.

“Having gone to Watford City and driving there in the night time and seeing the flares everywhere, it’s incredible to see how that part of our state has changed. That was impactful.”

The class toured an oil-drilling site and went on a rig, where Jeanna saw a familiar sight that made her smile.

“I’ve always gotten after my children to not spend too much time on video games,” she said. “The gentleman drilling the hole and laying pipe going down into the land was sitting on a chair operating joysticks, and it looked just like my son sitting in front of a TV CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

playing with a controller. I said, I’ll never get after my son again.

Their hand-eye coordination is valuable.”

Jeanna’s experience in Washington, D.C. paid huge dividends for the class when it took its trip to the nation’s capital. She’s been to three Farmers Union fly-ins and used some of the connections she developed on those trips to go behind the scenes.

“I was able to have Dan Simons speak to the group on leadership and his role in the Founding Farmers Restaurants,” she said.

“He spoke on the values of NDFU and making that the key in bringing great fresh food, from the farm to the table in every restaurant in Washington, D.C.” NDFU also sponsored a great meal at Farmer Fishers Bakers, which was one of the highlights of the trip.

FLAMES

Part of the requirement for each class is an individual project in their respective communities.

Jeanna started thinking of her project early on, and it’s along the same lines of RLND but for a younger group.

Future Leaders And Mentors Engaging Society (FLAMES) was started in Grand Forks County with the help of Carrie Knudson, Grand Forks County Extension agent. The leadership course is for grades 9-12 and involves realworld tools that prepare students for adulthood.

“How to deal with conflict, how to dress for success and how you should look when you want to present something,” Jeanna said. “How to do a strong (job) interview, how to build a strong resume — we also talk about etiquette. dining experience with Grand Forks Mayor Michael Brown, University of North Dakota President Mark Kennedy and retired Air Force Col. Barbara Chine. The trio talked leadership and how being a good listener and encourager can help resolve conflict. The dining capped off the first year for the course, which runs concurrent with the school year.

“The kids were so impressed,” Jeanna said. “It was an awesome ending to a great year.”

Jeanna said she decided to take up this mantle while meeting with state and national leaders.

“I want kids that want to be involved in their state,” she said.

“They have all of these abilities. I want to give them an opportunity and teach them to understand their own skills.”

She has even been contacted to help write a leadership curriculum that may be implemented in the North Dakota public school system. However, getting around an already packed schedule for high school students represents a problem.

“Carrie and I had to figure out how to reach those so busy with everything else,” Jeanna said.

“High school students today are so involved that it is hard for

them to find time to be involved in other group activities outside of school. When I approached them, they were excited about opportunities but couldn’t find the extra time. With today’s adults, this lack of training in leadership is what’s missing. This is where FLAMES can help.”

Jeanna will spend the summer looking for funding for the program as it continues to grow before taking on the next class in August. She is thankful for the support of Knudson, Phil Gisi with Edgewood Management Group, Grand Forks County Farmers Union for the scholarship of $500 to one student and the many mentors who volunteered their time.

Most of all, it may not have been possible without her experience with RLND, which started with a friendly visit from NDFU Board Member and neighbor Terry Borstad.

“It’s an incredible opportunity to learn everything you can about your state, about the people in your country and to go abroad and learn about the world as a whole,” Jeanna said. “I’m so appreciative for the opportunity to go. I’m glad Terry walked across the grass and told me all about it.”

‘Father of Ethanol’ receives highest award

On April 13, there was a celebration in honor of Merle Anderson for all he has done to contribute to Farmers Union and American agriculture.

Merle was honored with the Meritorious Service Award from National Farmers Union at its national convention. Past recipients of this award included members of Congress and a former U.S. president who have made particularly noteworthy contributions to family agriculture, humanity and Farmers Union at the state and national levels.

In 1987, Merle founded the American Coalition for Ethanol and continues to be chairman Emeritus of the board of directors for ACE. He is unofficially

known as “The father of ethanol.”

Merle has a long history of service to agriculture.

He grew up on his family’s farm in Polk County, Minn., where he helped his father grow potatoes before taking over the operation himself.

From 1970-71, he was chairman of the Red River Valley Growers Association, followed by a stint as president of the National Potato Council in 1973.

Merle also served for 45 years on the Red River Valley Cooperative Power board, and for 25 years with the Minnkota Power Cooperative.

Merle dedicated his career and his life to bettering the lives of family farmers, ranchers and their communities.

LADIES AG NIGHT HELD IN ROCK LAKE

The fifth annual Ladies Ag Night was held April 3 in Rock Lake and sponsored by Towner and Rolette County Soil Conservation Districts with record attendance.

“Be Epic…There’s a Wonder Woman in You” drove home that no matter who you are, find something you’re good at, do it, and give it your all, and you can do amazing things.

“We are connected either as producers, consumers, moms or all of those. It’s important to make those connections with others and get involved on the community level so we can keep these rural areas alive,” says Carie Moore, TCSCD district manager.

The beef tips and roasted carrots supper, along with desserts, was prepared and served by Paige Sullivan of Cando and the Rock Lake Boosters lent a hand with the venue and beverages. Carie Moore and Tammy Lassonde, district managers for the SCDs, as well as Kate Plautz and Nikki Hanretty, NRCS-Rolette County, worked together to make the night a great experience for those who were new and those who returned from previous years.

Amazing support from surrounding sponsors, including Towner County Farmers Union and Farmers Union Insurance-Farbo Agency, contributed to the event success and deserve much thanks!

The fifth annual Ladies Ag Night was held in Rock Lake on April 3.

Influential Award and one was given out to a recipient in each county. The Districts give recognition to an individual each year who stands out in the community for their positive influence in agriculture. Karen Armstrong and JoLeen Johnson were chosen due to their outreach efforts and help volunteering to better their communities.

Katie Dilse helped celebrate the five-year mark, on roller-skates, to encourage the women to take risks. She was relatable, funny, and emotional.

“This event for all women has always focused on the fact that agriculture is everyone, not just those who live on the farm. Rural communities are connected through everyday people and jobs, and we all should strive to BE EPIC with the talents we have,” Moore stated.

Planning for late March 2018 will be under way in a few months and if you haven’t been to this event, please attend. It’s for everyone!

Shelly Ziesch

Shelly Ziesch is a friendly and familiar face within the NDFU family. She has been a member and an irreplaceable staple in the organization for a long time.

“I’ve been involved my whole life,” Shelly said. “My grandparents and my parents grew up in NDFU so naturally I followed.”

Shelly is president of Kidder County Farmers Union and coordinates the EPIC program. She has hit many milestones throughout her lifetime involvement with NDFU. She earned her Torchbearer award and that was just the beginning. Shelly and her husband Robin were an FUE couple and are currently in the Grow to Lead program at NDFU. This year she was elected as a delegate to the National Farmers Union Convention, is actively involved with the WILD program and is vice chair of the Next Generation Advisory Council.

In her community, Shelly holds a variety of diverse leadership and volunteer roles. She is a volunteer fire fighter, the squad leader for Pettibone Quick Response Unit, 4-H leader, KC Post Prom Party President and she is on the Kidder County FSA county committee.

She is passionate about NDFU and her community.

Her advice to women who are hesitant to get involved: “Even if you don’t think you have

The most influential woman in Shelly’s life is her mother.

“She not only helped farm and ranch, but she had an off-farm job before it was normal,” Shelly said. “Now it’s common to see people with an off-farm job, but back then, it wasn’t.”

Like her mother, Shelly works off the farm. She is a medical transcriptionist for Jamestown Regional Medical Center.

A deep-rooted theme in Shelly’s life is family. It is evident in her personal life and in her experience with NDFU. “Whenever you go to an event, there is someone there who has done what you’re doing and knows what you’re going through. It’s nice to be able to visit and have an extended family,” Shelly said.

Shelly’s experiences with NDFU are a unique aspect of her life. The family theme rings true and continues to grow stronger.

“I think it’s crazy that a lot of people I went to camp with are still involved, and I run into them all the time. I just think that is so cool,” Shelly said. “I don’t think you get that with any other group.”

What are you most looking forward to with the future of NDFU? Getting the next generation involved. They have so much potential and we need their involvement to keep our organization strong into the future so their voices continue to be heard for family farmers.

What is your Spirit animal?

A horse. We’ve just always connected! When you ride a horse, you feel like you’re free.

What’s happening Morton County Farmers Union EPIC coach Lisa Rebenitsch visited Little Heart School in St. Anthony.

The Cavalier County Farmers Union had hops and brats for Farmers Union Insurance agent Russell Stremick, who held an open house to celebrate his new office location in April.

NDFU President Mark Watne represented National Farmers Union and spoke at a World Farm Organization event in April in Brussels.

Ward County Farmers Union hosted an EPIC event in Minot at HighAir Ground trampoline park. Parents and youth received free entrance to the trampoline park, along with pizza when they were tuckered out from jumping. In addition, for attending this event, the youth will receive 50 percent reimbursement toward their camp registration fee this summer.

FUI agent Lance Gulleson of Lisbon spoke at the Bowman County FFA’s year-end banquet.

National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson received the annual John Lee Coulter Award from the NDSU Agribusiness Club. The award is given to an individual who has distinguised himself in the agriculture industry.

Burleigh County held a Family Fun Night March 20 at the Tumbleweed Bar and Grill in Lincoln. A taco buffet was served, and there was a game portion with prizes as well as a good old fashioned cake walk. Alexis Thompson, Miss Junior Teen International North Dakota, gave a presentation and performed a dance routine. It was a great turnout with about 40 in attendance.​

Sioux County Farmers Union played a significant role in the Selfridge Farm and Ranch Day on April 28. Members of the board helped with various booths including camp/youth promotion, making bird feeders and NDSU Extension.

Eli Martinez, a culinary student at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, is NDFU’s first intern at Founding Farmers in D.C. He will be working at various restaurant locations, learning different aspects of the business from the ground up, including dishwashing and cooking. NDFU President Mark Watne presented Martinez with a cookbook and $2,000 check to help defray living expenses while he interns from May 22Aug. 4. Martinez is from the U.S. Virgin Islands.

A Kidder County women’s event was held on April 22 at the Pettibone Community Hall. Lindsay Ostlie from Ostlie’s Sunnyside Acres in Carrington came to teach everyone about the process of growing hops.

McLean County Farmers Union held an event that included a presentation from an NDFU-certified master gardener about pollinator and butterfly gardens. The event included lunch and the making of a “Fairy Garden” by each participant.

Adams County Farmers Union helped sponsor the Adams County Soil Conservation District’s 12th annual Horticulture/ Tree Workshop on April 11. Arlene Walch and Connie Hourigan assisted and also gave a short presentation promoting Farmers Union and the member benefits.
