FARMERS NEED TO SPEAK OUT

H

arvest is coming with mixed messages this year.

The crop looks good and yield expectations are satisfying. One would expect that farmers and ranchers would be happy.

But we are in the midst of storms that are beyond the control of family farmers and ranchers. Storms have collapsed prices due to choices our government has made on trade and on renewable fuels.

This comes at a time when farm income is nearly 50 percent lower from previous highs.

I have been very impressed with farmers who are standing up for themselves these last few months. I have been embarrassed by some farm leaders and elected officials that have told farmers to sit down and be quiet. I recently attended a farmer-led meeting where farmers and ranchers were very angry as their livelihood was being challenged. I say to you, “Keep it up and be loud.” It is time we see our industry get the credit we deserve.

We have a number of selfinterest groups leading the fight against family farms and ranches in D.C. These well-funded groups include, to name a few: Americans for Prosperity, American Enterprise Institute, Cato Institute, National Taxpayers Union, Environmental Working Group, U.S. Public Interest Research Groups, and Defenders of Wildlife. If farmers remain quiet, these organizations will get the opportunity to be the only voice on agricultural policy.

Agriculture is a unique industry. It does not respond to the typical laws of supply and demand. If food prices are low, people do not add another meal

each day to use up low-cost food. Consumers should also be concerned if we ever go to a justin-time delivery system for food as they would pay dramatically more when there are shortages.

Many people do not understand the purpose of farm bills. We are in a time when they are essential. The consumer needs to understand that an abundant food supply is a good thing. They should understand that excess food is a detriment to prices family farmers and ranchers receive for their crops and livestock. The farm bill is a backstop to declining prices.

It enables farms and ranches to keep operating in times of low prices. Having a large number of diverse family farms and ranches across this country has served our citizens very well. We have a food production system that is the envy of the world.

What we really need is a government that works to improve prices by increasing demand for our commodities through support of renewable fuels, trade deals that leave farmers and ranchers in both countries better off financially, and excess food placed in

the hands of the one billion chronically starving people in the world.

If this singular focus existed, we would have a farm bill with higher support prices as new demand would keep prices high and bring the cost of the farm bill down. Wouldn’t it be great to farm and ranch in a time when our government was creating demand and higher prices for our crops rather than a government whose policies depressed our prices?

Family farmers and ranchers: Keep making noise. You deserve a better farm program, better support prices and a government that works to help you do the job of producing food for the world.

It is time the farm bill is written to serve its purpose not solely based on budget limitations.

Grand Forks County Farmers Union takes on project of teaching kids about bees Ten-year-old Josie Schultz of Grand Forks was worried she would be too young to participate when she learned 4-H would be teaming with Grand Forks County Farmers Union to teach youth about beekeeping.

She had planned to attend the first meeting with her 14-year-old sister Kaela, who was also interested in the program.

“She gets to go to this meeting, and I guess I’ll sit there and read a book,” Schultz said.

She was ecstatic to learn it was for ages 10 and older.

“My mom (Andrea) has always wanted bees, and she was excited and wanted us to do it,” Josella said. “I was fine with that because I was really excited about it too,” The program is headed by David Gorder, a GFCFU director who decided to tackle the project.

Gorder said GFCFU handles the oversight, while director Paul Sproule donated the equipment and 4-H supplied the youth. Local part-time beekeeper

“But also, educate kids involved in agriculture and teach them something they can use later in life.”

The first meeting was in April, and Gorder said they had two “training sessions” before acquiring the bees.

“We met with the kids and taught them a lot before hand,” Gorder said. “Well, I shouldn’t say I taught them. Daniel taught them — I was learning along with the kids.”

Daniel and his father Paul haven’t been beekeeping long — they started three years ago — but Daniel has gained the experience needed to guide the project. He said he wasn’t sure about helping with the project at first, but quickly signed on.

CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “Once we started it, it seemed pretty cool,” he said. “The kids really love it.”

Before they can check on the bees to make sure they’re producing, everyone involved needs to be in a beekeeping suit. Then, Daniel uses a bee smoker to mask the alarm pheromones released by worker bees that signal harm to the hive. It allows the boxes to be checked while the hive is relatively calm.

With all the excitement, the kids sometimes get a little too eager, Daniel said.

“They’ll go running up to the hives and are ready to take the tops off,” he said. “I have to say, ‘Whoa! We’ve got to smoke them first.’”

Each column of boxes is a hive with a queen, Daniel said. Typically, the queen and the brood are in the first two boxes, he said.

Kaela Schultz said her first experience with the

nucleus colony or “nuc” — which is the first box used to start the process — was memorable.

“We actually got to hold all the bees,” she said.

“It was cool to feel them buzzing.”

Gorder said they intend to harvest the honey around Labor Day. The screens inside each box that are filled with honey will go into a fastspinning machine that shoots the honey out.

The honey will be sold at a farmer’s market first before the kids go door to door to sell the remaining honey with all proceeds supporting GFCFU. Gorder said they hope to keep raising bees each year.

“This is a pilot program,” he said. “We want to make it better and continue doing it.”

That’s fine with Josella, who smiles from ear to ear when talking about the project.

“I look forward to selling and eating honey,” she said.

FUI, baseball teams join

DICKINSON — Blue barrels from Great Plains Food Bank made the rounds throughout western North Dakota this summer, as Farmers Union Insurance worked with three wood-bat league teams to incentivize fans into bringing canned goods to the ballpark.

The Badlands Big Sticks in Dickinson are in their inaugural season and jumped at the chance to help out those hungry in their community.

“It’s a way for us to give back to the community and surrounding areas,” General Manager Jason Watkins said. “It’s something we wanted to do and take pride in. We’re excited to do it.”

Kevin Ressler, chief sales, marketing and brand officer for Farmers Union Insurance, said helping provide food for hungry families is part of FUI’s

mission.

“Although we’re in the business of insurance, our mission is to build stronger communities,” he said. “This event along with several others across the state have helped us provide thousands of meals for those in need. What better way is there to help make a community strong then to provide food for the hungry?”

The event was held July 24 at Southside Municipal Ballpark in Dickinson against the Souris Valley Sabre Dogs, a team from Minot that, along with the Bismarck Larks, also hosted events.

Everyone who brought food to donate received a raffle ticket, entering them into drawings for prizes that included Fargo Force hockey tickets.

There’s no doubt it worked, as the team typically welcomes around 600 fans every home game. For

this event, over 1,000 showed up.

“It’s always good to have some extra incentive,” Watson said.

Farmers Union Insurance is a sponsor for all three wood-bat league teams in western North Dakota.

Players in wood bat leagues are headed back to college in the fall, as opposed to being semi-professional like minor league teams such as the FargoMoorhead Redhawks, who partnered with FUI to host a food-donation night on Aug. 22 in Fargo.

NEARLY 100 FARMERS N early 100 farmers and ranchers from North Dakota will travel to Washington, D.C., on Sept 11-14 to advocate on behalf of agriculture at the National Farmers Union Fall Legislative Fly-in.

During their time in Washington, members will be afforded the opportunity to hear from U.S. Department of Agriculture officials about current events, opportunities and other work the department is doing on behalf of farmers.

They will receive briefings from White House officials, and the leadership and staff of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Agriculture. NFU also honors members of Congress with one of its highest awards, The Golden Triangle Award.

The most important agenda items of the fly-in, however, are the meetings on Capitol Hill.

Teams of Farmers Union members will stop by the office of every member of Congress.

Grassroots efforts at their finest, Farmers Union members will highlight the key priorities for the organization, struggles they are facing, and goals for future legislation and the next farm bill.

Here are some of the issues Farmers Union will be focusing on:

PASS A STRONG FARM BILL

American family farmers, ranchers and consumers all benefit from a strong, sustainable and secure food system. As the farm bill is an important part of that system, Farmers Union is urging Congress to pass a bill that improves the farm safety net to deal with the current economic hardship facing farmers, promotes the environmental sustainability of family farm operations, and improves access to diverse markets for family farmers and ranchers.

It’s vital the farm bill provides a strong safety net.

The 2018 Farm Bill should improve PLC and ARC farm programs, which provide relief for farmers struggling with low commodity prices. It should create an inventory management program for dairy production and improve existing dairy programs. Also, there should be payment limits at meaningful levels to ensure benefits are directed at family farmers.

NFU would like to see the farm bill maintain overall funding for conservation programs like CSP and EQIP, which support voluntary conservation activities.

PROTECT AG FROM TRADE LOSSES

A trade war with the rest of the world – in particular with China, Canada, Mexico and the EU – is destroying demand for U.S. farm products abroad, further depressing already low farm prices. Family farmers are facing significant financial strain. Congress needs to either work with the administration or take the mantle in providing farmers with the support they need to continue operating.

SUPPORT BIOFUEL PRODUCTION

The transition to an American-grown, renewable energy future for the U.S. is well underway. The growth of renewable energy use in transportation fuels, powered through policies like the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), has been a success story for all Americans. For the U.S. to realize the full potential of the renewable energy sector, we should promote clean, higherblended ethanol and advanced bio-based fuels.

This transition should include removing regulatory barriers to higher blends of ethanol like E-30 and supporting advanced biofuels.

N.D. duo intern at D.C. restaurants

BY FARMERS RESTAURANT GROUP

Farmers Restaurant Group welcomed two interns this summer ­– Cassidy Neidviecky and Derrick Fox, who made their way to our D.C. restaurants straight from their hospitality studies at North Dakota State College of Science.

Partnering with North Dakota Farmers Union, we invited Cassidy and Derrick to intern with our FRG team this summer for some real, handson experience and bring to life what they’re learning in the classroom. From front of house to kitchen to back office, they fit right in with our team at Farmers & Distillers.

Neidviecky and Fox each received $2,000 from NDFU in May to help defray the cost of living expenses while interning.

With a passion for hospitality and learning about our sustainable restaurant concept, operations, and especially our scratch-made kitchens, Cassidy and Derrick worked their way around all of the Farmers & Distillers stations.

Connecting it all back to the family farmers who grow and produce our food, they also worked in our bakery where we use North Dakota milled flour that arrives at our restaurants,

along with other food supplies, direct from North Dakota via the NDFU food truck.

Our FRG family enjoyed having Cassidy and Derrick with us. Their enthusiasm for learning and working with our teams, and visits in their off-hours to Founding Farmers and Farmers Fishers Bakers, were much appreciated.

We think they enjoyed it, too.

Derrick said of his experience, “My experience at F&D has been absolutely, downright amazing. I couldn’t have asked for anything better this year as an internship.”

And hopefully one day, I get to move here … and stay here!”
