Originally from northern Colorado, I was raised on the family cattle and hay ranch.

Being actively involved in training the horses, feeding the cattle and driving tractor during hay season taught me a lot about agriculture. It also instilled a great work ethic in me – there is no work as tough as that of a farmer.

I have lived in North Dakota since 2014 with my long-term partner, Dan. He is a fourth generation North Dakotan whose family farmed in the Wildrose area. Our family unit is somewhat unique in that our “kids” have fur. No, not the werewolf type, but rather the fuzzy canine type. Our two rescue dogs are an integral part of our lives and travel with us most everywhere.

My biggest thrill is learning to fly airplanes. An ongoing endeavor, I hope to get my

private pilot’s license in the next year. Then I will be saving up for my own plane to explore the state in. Anyone want a ride to a Bison game with me?

As a people person by nature, I enjoy interacting with my clients. I will often do farm renewals at my client’s farms and homes. During harvest, Dan and I will drive around delivering hot meals to area farmers in the fields.

and background in finance give me the skills to analyze coverage options and ensure my clients policies meet their ever-changing needs. My love for spreadsheets and numbers has enabled me to create various computerized comparison tools for my clients.

When set up correctly, an insurance policy is the best way to protect one’s assets. It is important that an agent listen thoroughly to their clients’ needs and structure their insurance policy to appropriately cover those needs. Two of the key things to be a successful agent are client follow up and completing what you told your client you would when you said it would be completed.

Locally, I am a bookkeeper for the Ray Golf Course, a director on the Ray Chamber of Commerce and the secretary for the Ray Mall Board.

Farmers Union leads the way in agriculture We are experiencing a new lifestyle with COVID-19. It has allowed time to reflect on what makes our organization successful. I am proud to say it is our commitment to the success of many, rather than a few, that sets us apart from most organizations.

Our approach to issues opens endless doors for opportunities to say or give necessary input into the direction of our country. Many people believe we focus on partisan issues, but that is so far from true it is almost laughable. We focus on the policies our members support. We are grassroots.

In the past year, Farmers Union has been asked to advise on numerous issues as we face trying times in agriculture and beyond. There is no specific political party that is requesting this from us. It is simply leadership asking us for ideas, input and concepts to hopefully overcome the challenges we face.

We have been approached by USDA, senators, representatives, state governments and campaigns from both sides of the aisle. This reflects back on my earlier comment that encouraging the success of many, rather than a few, has positioned us to be a respected advisor.

A strategy that I have always had, since given

the privilege to serve this organization, is that we will explore all options and open doors to achieve the mission of our organization. Our staff is told to never miss an opportunity to express the views of North Dakota Farmers Union. We allow our staff to participate in the political process from local elections to federal elections. We encourage our members to become leaders and serve on local boards, both government and business. If you are not expressing our views every time you are given an opportunity, you are missing a chance to educate.

I am proud to say our leaders, staff and members are making a huge difference in each of our lives as we face current challenges. It is our structure and our commitment to society that will bring us back to the lifestyle we enjoy. Keep up the work and the faith that each of you carry and we will get through these challenges.

Remember to never shy away from an open door or a challenge. I promise that your organization will meet every challenge head on, and by doing so, we will continue to be an organization you can respect and expect to lead you into the future.

Farm policy going forward

How will the Market Facilitation Program (MFP) impact future farm policy? Last November, several economists and experts posed this question, arguing MFP’s size and behind-closed-doors development set a new precedent. Six months and a global pandemic later, an even larger program has been developed through the same process.

So, the question becomes: how will the MFP and coronavirus response impact farm policy going forward?

When Congress drafted the CARES Act, they rightfully included direct support for farmers and ranchers. However, they did not include much direction on how the $23.5 billion ought to be spent.

There was no program structure and no tie to farm bill programs. Instead, Congress simply told the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to target livestock, dairy, specialty crop and local foods producers with a portion of the funds.

The CARES Act set the stage for the third consecutive year of ad hoc spending by USDA. In mid-April, the Department announced the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP).

While little is known about the program’s structure, CFAP’s $16 billion in direct payments alone will surpass each version of the MFP in size and scope.

As I write this, Congress is developing a “Phase 4” coronavirus relief bill. A $3 trillion House proposal would double the size of CFAP and direct USDA to expand the program’s reach.

of the MFP’s and CFAP’s joint legacy. The House proposal would give Congress more oversight of the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) in anticipation of efforts to increase the CCC’s cap.

Up to this point, the MFP and CFAP have represented increasing reliance on ad hoc programs and the Secretary of Agriculture’s growing power to develop programs. Each year since the 2018 Farm Bill passed, its farm programs have been outpaced by emergency spending. Oversight alone wouldn’t rebalance farm program and ad hoc spending. However, it would place a check on the Secretary’s power and require USDA to be more transparent and accountable.

As Congress sorts out the size and structure of additional farm relief, they are also stepping back and wondering how we got to this point. After three consecutive years of emergency payments, Congress is realizing that farmers and ranchers are being squeezed on all sides by corporate giants. The American public is also learning that consolidation in our food supply isn’t just bad for farmers and ranchers; it’s bad for consumers too.

Maybe the legacy of this crisis will be a new era of antitrust enforcement and reform. For decades, Farmers Union has urged policymakers to pry our farm and food system from the hands of multinational corporations. Amid all this chaos, maybe Congress will remember that the best solution for farmers and ranchers is a fair market.

Seeking optimism As they seed their fields during a pandemic, farmers are concerned about commodity prices

T

he old saying, “Hope springs eternal” by Alexander Pope rings mostly true for farmers when planting season comes around.

The coronavirus pandemic may have slowed the process a bit at times, but farmers continue to get back to work, planting their 2020 crop. However, something else is weighing heavily on their minds.

Ben Vig, who farms on the eastern side of the state near Sharon, said commodity prices aren’t making him very eager to be out in the field.

“It’s nice to be busy and get out in the field and stay busy, but a person can only be so enthusiastic,” Vig said. “I don’t know if there’s much optimism with the markets. It’d be nice if the markets were another dollar high. To do all of this for $2 corn or $4 wheat or $7 soybeans – it’s hard to be enthusiastic.”

At CHS SunPrairie Grain in Minot, the cash price on May 5 for corn was $2.27, while soybeans were $7.25 and spring wheat was $4.45. Tyler Stafslien of Ryder, which is south of Minot, said it’s hard to get excited when there’s a chance of losing money.

“I’ve always thought it was fun to get in a tractor and do this – put the crop in the ground and possibly make money in the fall,” Stafslien said. “This year, you’re more pessimistic about there being any extra money, and there’s a good chance you could lose money. It’s difficult staying motivated.”

Keith Smith, who farms near Maddock, said the prices definitely detract from the optimism farmers typically feel.

“When you see prices like that on the board, you ask yourself, ‘Why am I doing

this again?’” Smith joked. “It’s hard to get excited.”

Still, all three farmers were in the field or at least preparing to seed. As of May 5, Vig was still dealing with frost and water issues.

“This is the worst frost we’ve seen in over five years” he said. “We’ve had nice weather. But you drive across the yard and the pickup sinks in 6 inches. Water should be running down the yard. Tough conditions for it to thaw.”

At the same time, Smith hadn’t started planting yet, but was dropping fertilizer.

“Some fields are good to go across, while the next one is soupy and wet, and you almost get stuck,” he said.

Stafslien wasn’t dealing with those issues, though. By early May, he had

one-third of his crop in, citing good conditions.

“It’s as early as we’ve ever gotten it in (to this point),” he said. “I was concerned coming into this spring, but we really didn’t get any significant snowfall.”

The pandemic has all three farmers being careful about contact, but none of the three said it really hindered them in any way in terms of putting in a crop.

“I haven’t been anywhere where there’s a crowd of people, but I can put gloves on and my wife Megan has sowed cloth masks,” Vig said.

Stafslien said he tries to take caution with parts stores and other businesses he needs to frequent for the farm.

“A lot of times, I’ll call ahead and

have them set what I need outside and take it that way,” he said.

Smith said he’s been lucky to be able to have some parts shipped to his home, like when he was combining his leftover corn earlier this spring and needed something specific.

“I do some business in Jamestown, and they can ship it to me,” Smith said.

Though farmers have still been able to plant this spring, Stafslien said time in the tractor has made him think about those who cannot do their work.

“I definitely consider myself lucky compared to many across this country, like people working in restaurants and bars in bigger cities," Stafslien said. "I’m a farmer, and I can do my occupation. I feel very blessed.”

NDFU makes

30,000 pounds of pork donated to Great Plains Food

FARGO – Farmers Union Enterprises (FUE) teamed up with North Dakota Farmers Union to donate 30,000 pounds of pork ribs to the Great Plains Food Bank (GPFB) in Fargo. The donation completes a five-state giving spree of 150,000 pounds of pork to food banks in South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana and North Dakota.

“Food banks are doing all they can to meet the increased demand for food given COVID-19 and high unemployment,” said NDFU President Mark Watne. “This donation is one way we can help feed hungry families.”

help fund Farmers Union organizations in the five-state area, as well as FUE programs and National Farmers Union. The donated pork ribs came from Redwood Farms, which supplies premium pork products to high-end restaurants in New York, Chicago and other cities across the U.S. Watne said FUE is doing what it can to help the most vulnerable. “We care deeply about our food system,” he said. “We have the ability to produce enough food. We should ensure no one has to worry about where their next meal is coming from.”

In North Dakota, the GPFB is the largest hungerrelief organization and the state’s only food bank.

It works with a wide array of individuals and

“North Dakota Farmers Union has always been an excellent partner with the Great Plains Food Bank and our work to end hunger throughout the state, and this donation of meat is no exception,” Great Plains Food Bank President Melissa Sobolik said.

“Thirty thousand pounds of short ribs are going to go a long way to providing a high-protein item to those struggling with food insecurity during a very difficult time. We thank North Dakota Farmers Union for their continued support in our mission.”

Supporting Communities Farmers Union Insurance agents use social media to promote local businesses

David Bergeman decided to go big with his support for the local community during the pandemic.

The Farmers Union Insurance agent from southwest North Dakota with offices in Forman and Oakes put together a Facebook giveaway worth $1,200. It included four $25 gift cards each to 12 different businesses, creating 48 prize winners.

“If you liked our comment and shared our post, you got into the drawing,” he said. “We created a spinning wheel, spun the wheel, did the drawing, and it went over very well. Businesses were very appreciative.”

Bergeman said the post had over 20,000 views, and many in the comments thanked him for supporting the community. Bergeman said supporting the local community is how he was raised.

His father Lawrence, who died in 2009, was also a Farmers Union Insurance agent.

“I’ve been around Farmers Union all of my life,” David said. “That’s just the way I was raised. Giving back to the community is just what you do. You support and take care of each other.”

Many businesses, particularly restaurants, are struggling during the pandemic, as restrictions limit how many customers can be seated at once, with takeout orders being the last resort. Bergeman said his goal is to keep those businesses in people’s minds.

“We’ve got to keep them viable,” Bergeman said. “It’s hard enough to keep businesses going in small communities. We don’t want them to dry up.”

Like Bergeman, many Farmers Union Insurance agents are supporting local businesses.

Kelly Braun in Dickinson has a weekly giveaway of a $25 gift card to

a local restaurant for those liking and sharing the post, which comes with a “keep it local” hashtag.

“I’m hoping they get some business out of it with curbside stuff,” Braun said. “It’s something kind of fun for people to look and find on Facebook.”

Braun said it’s been well received all around.

“I didn’t realize the positive reaction we’d get from the business owners,” he said. “We call ahead and ask if we can use their business name and promote them with it. Most of them figure we’re asking them to donate the gift card, and we’re not doing that. We’re purchasing it. The reaction from the community has been really good.”

Review cow calf plans Spring turnout to the pasture is a good time for producers to review their cow-calf health management plans, according to North Dakota State University Extension livestock experts.

They note that a number of factors can impact cow-calf health, including slow grass growth and moisture conditions that may delay grazing readiness and result in prolonged feeding. Other factors are cooler, wet conditions that create a variety of challenges for young livestock, particularly for those in dry lots or areas with high concentrations of livestock.

“The passive transfer of immunity from the dam is dependent on the availability of high-quality colostrum containing adequate levels of antibodies, as well as protein, energy, vitamins and minerals,” said Janna Block, Extension livestock systems specialist at NDSU’s Hettinger Research Extension Center.

“Environmental stress at the time of birth, combined with low-quality feedstuffs, may have reduced the quality and quantity of colostrum available to newborn calves.”

Colostrum is a form of milk that cows produce in late pregnancy. It contains energy, protein, fat, vitamins and antibodies to protect newborns against disease until their own immune system is functional.

The environmental and feed quality issues related to colostrum, nursing and passive transfer of immunity create an increased risk for bacteria and other pathogens that can cause scours and other

health conditions even beyond the first few months of life.

VACCINATIONS IMPORTANT

“In addition to managing current health problems, producers need to start thinking forward to health insurance programs for nursing calves on pasture,” says Gerald Stokka, Extension veterinarian and livestock stewardship specialist. “For spring-calving herds, branding or turnout time is a good opportunity to protect the calf through the summer grazing period with appropriate management. One of the important components of the health insurance plan is vaccinations.”

Risks to calves include respiratory diseases (summer pneumonia), clostridial diseases, pinkeye and foot rot. Stokka encourages producers to work with their veterinarian to evaluate which vaccines to use based on three principles: Are vaccines necessary? Is the risk of the disease significant?

Are vaccines effective? Does evidence show that the vaccines work under field conditions?

Are vaccines safe to use? When used according to label recommendations, the risk of systemic and local tissue reactions is limited.

Veterinarians generally recommend administering a five-way modified live-virus vaccine to calves at turnout time. This vaccine usually includes protection against infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), PI3, bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) and bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV).

The principle is to provide some protection during the nursing phase and also to begin the immunization of not only individuals but groups of animals to build herd immunity. While the immune response in young animals is somewhat limited, this initial or primary dose provides immune system memory for a booster dose to be administered prior to or at weaning.

Vaccination for calves against BVDV at turnout may not be necessary in operations that have biosecurity procedures and practice annual cow herd vaccination for BVDV. Instead, producers may consider using a modified livevirus intranasal vaccine to combat infectious IBR, PI 3 and BRSV, or a simple subcutaneously administered three-way modified live-virus vaccine.

Here are the specialists’ assessments of other vaccines: The use of vaccines to reduce the risk of Mannheimia hemolytica and Pasteurella multocida is common. Protection against these bacteria often is included in combination with five-way modified live-virus vaccines.

An inexpensive, effective vaccine is available against the clostridial family of diseases more commonly called “blackleg.” This vaccine commonly is called a seven-way, indicating protection against seven different species of

clostridial bacteria and toxoids in the vaccine.

Pinkeye vaccines are available in the commercial market, and the opportunity to create a herd-specific autogenous vaccine is available.

However, evidence of their efficacy is lacking.

Fly control, rotational grazing, early treatment and separating infected animals from the rest of the herd help reduce the spread of pinkeye.

Foot rot vaccines have been shown to have approximately 50% efficacy in reducing foot rot disease. However, pinkeye and foot rot vaccines require at least two doses to produce some level of protection.

Dewormers may be necessary in some grazing situations; however, dewormers administered prior to the grazing season will offer little benefit for internal parasite control. Some fly control is achieved with the avermectin products through the control of larvae developing in manure patties.

But do not use avermectins strictly for fly control because resistance will develop rapidly.

“When using inactivated vaccines to prevent respiratory disease, consult with your veterinarian as to their effectiveness and whether booster doses will be necessary,” Stokka advises.

The specialists caution that many products on the market claim to boost the immune system or promote gut health. However, few of these products have been evaluated in a research setting, and producers should consult with their veterinarian about using the products.

Provide ways, such as vaccine coolers, to keep

Make sure they have enough needles to allow for frequent changes, and if using intranasal vaccines, have an adequate supply of intranasal cannulas to change for every calf or at least every five calves.

Walk through the handling facilities before working cattle, and

R repair breaks, brace weak spots and make changes if cattle flow is less than expected.

Chef Joe's BBQ sauce INGREDIENTS (makes 4 cups) 1 small red bell pepper 1½ cup yellow onions (chopped) ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil ¼ cup light corn syrup 2 tablespoons molasses 1 cup malt vinegar 1 cup packed light brown sugar ½ cup diced tomatoes (canned or fresh)

½ cup ketchup ½ cup Heinz chili sauce 1½ teaspoons paprika ¼ teaspoon ground cumin 1½ teaspoons chili powder ¾ teaspoon dry mustard ¼ teaspoon ground ginger ¾ teaspoon kosher salt

INSTRUCTIONS Roast red bell pepper over open flame or on baking sheet in a 450° oven until very dark (not burned). De-stem the pepper. Heat oil in medium sauté pan. Sauté the red pepper and onions until caramelized. Add all remaining ingredients. Bring to a simmer and cook for 45 minutes. Remove from heat. Let cool. When cool, place mixture in blender and purée until smooth. Use immediately. Store remaining BBQ sauce covered, in refrigerator for up to two weeks.
