Over 250 people participated in the Precision Agriculture Action Summit held Jan. 16-17 at the North Dakota Farmers Union Conference Center. The two-day conference featured demonstrations and presentations on a variety of topics including global positioning systems, wireless communication, equipment, mapping and remote sensing devices.

According to NDFU president Elwood “Woody” Barth, the summit was important to the agricultural industry. “I’m proud to say that this conference brought in nationally recognized speakers and explored the latest technologies. That’s what NDFU is all about.

We want to bring educational opportunities to our membership and showcase the ag industry.”

Top agricultural leaders, along with North Dakota Senator Kent Conrad, were featured at the summit. Keynote speaker, Dr. Lowell Catlett, is a regent’s professor/dean and chief administrative officer at New Mexico State University’s College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences. Catlett is an internationally known futurist who spoke about technologies and their implications.

agriculture and said, “What is a luxury in one generation is a necessity in the next. Today, we have great economic freedom and it is a different world today than it was 100 years ago. We need to get ready and embrace the implications on technology. It will blow your doors off!”

Catlett pointed out how differential segmented markets have taken over our society. “No one knows the future but we need to embrace change. We’re mobile but we’re also tethered to technology.”

Participants learned more about how precision agriculture uses satellite images and GPS information to determine the proper application of farm chemicals, seeds and fertilizers for each portion of a field. It is an evolving science.

Lanny Faleide is president of Agri ImaGIS Technologies and he talked about using mobile devices to track field development. Faleide commented, “We want producers to understand their market and how their fields are growing. They need to use technology and access the satellite information and be on top of how to be more efficient. Today’s phones are very powerful and we can push the data to a mobile environment and be more accessible to farmers.”

“Controlling fertilizers and herbicide application is critical,” he said. “You need to know what the soil is doing. You can use satellite information about your field and find out what areas need to be addressed and use the information to put the right product on at the right place and time.”

This kind of precise application will reduce the end cost to producers and help the environment as well. President Barth said, “This is very important to family farmers and ranchers. By reducing double or triple spraying and over fertilizing, it helps the farmer’s bottom line and the environment at the same time. Most farmers are excellent stewards of the land. It’s their best asset.”

Dr. Paul Gunderson, director of the Dakota Center for Technology Optimized Agriculture, wrapped up the conference with thoughts on how to proceed with precision ag technologies.

Gunderson stressed the importance of research and advancement. “Technology has come of age and it does work. The challenge is to implement it in production agriculture. Farmers in this region are way ahead of the national average in adopting the technology but we have to do more.”

One of the challenges is to create precise land maps and have resources available to ask questions and implement plans. Finding out soil types, variations and what nutrients are needed for each acre of ground is critical for success.

Industry leaders have developed a variety of technologies and strategies that can reduce input costs, reduce crop injury and increase bottom line profit. The precision ag summit helped showcase those tools.

The event was hosted by the Red River Valley Research Corridor, North Dakota Farmers Union, North Dakota State University Department of Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering and Dakota Center for Precision Agriculture at Lake Region State College as well as keynote sponsor Farm Credit Services.

Greetings from Washington! The National Farmers Union office is bustling with activity as our convention is rapidly approaching. If you haven’t already done so, please make your arrangements to travel to Omaha for the convention to be held March 4-7. There are two hotels connected to the La Vista Conference Center, which is the site for a majority of the convention meetings. Hotel reservations need to be made by Feb. 18 in order to guarantee that you will get the Farmers Union discounted rate. Registration is also available online at www.nfu.org/convention.

The NFU Policy Committee held its first meeting in mid-January. This year’s policy committee members are Dan McGuire of Nebraska (chairman), John Daughenbaugh of Colorado (Rocky Mountain), Jeff Eschmeyer of Ohio, Sarah Lloyd of Wisconsin, Jeremy Scherler of Oklahoma, David Teigen of North Dakota and Gail Temple of South Dakota.

We will announce the results of our fundraising campaign for Feeding America at the convention. We have already exceeded $31,000 and are well on our way to reaching our goal of $50,000, which will be matched by Howard Buffett.

We recently hired Leigh Slayden as acting vice president of membership. Leigh most recently served as the director of marketing and member services at the Association of Public Health Laboratories. Prior to that, she spent more than 15 years serving in the membership department for organizations such as the American Diabetes Association, the American Chemical Society, and the American College of Physicians.

NFU was disappointed when U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced in early January the closure of more than 250 of its facilities across the country.

While it should come as no surprise that FSA and other USDA service and research facilities are closing because of the continued emphasis on spending reduction, a “cut first, ask questions later” attitude in Congress toward investing in agriculture and rural America is now showing its true cost to farmers, ranchers and rural citizens with these closures.

According to USDA, 259 facilities across the country will be shut down. FSA offices will account for 131 of the closures, and agricultural research stations, Natural Resource Conservation offices, Rural Development offices and Food, Nutrition and Consumer Service offices, among other agencies, will account for the rest.

USDA has made great strides toward streamlining and economizing the department’s operations.

Since 2010, Congress has cut USDA’s discretionary spending levels by about 12 percent, and USDA has done its best to prevent those reductions from affecting the quality of service that farmers and ranchers have come to expect. NFU will argue that agriculture cannot continue to take cuts that are disproportionate to the cuts across the entire budget.

Our work is continuing with Dr. Daryl Ray and the team at the University of Tennessee on the second phase of the study on farmer-owned reserves that was released last fall. Dr. Ray will be at the convention and will host a breakout session that will cover his most recent findings which show major government cost savings while protecting net farm income, reducing price and income variability, and providing numerous additional benefits.

After convention, we will be gearing up for two exciting events this summer. The NFU Women’s Conference will be held June 21-23, at the NFU Education Center in Bailey, Colorado. The 2012 NFU All-States Camp will be held June 24-29.

We bought a theater

Fire up the popcorn and get ready to enjoy the show. The Hazen Farmers Union Oil Company bought a movie theatre last spring and the venture has turned into a best picture.

Act I:

Over the last few years, the Hazen Farmers Union Oil Company has seen a dramatic increase in diesel sales and inside store sales. Manager Paul Doll said, “There are a lot of people driving to the oil fields and our sales reflect that trend. Our local customers also

wanted easier access to the diesel pumps as well so we decided to expand and add two more diesel pumps and put in a satellite island last spring to accommodate our needs.”

The co-op purchased the adjacent property next to the C-store and the old theatre building was located there. Initially, there were plans to tear down the building and use the space for parking. However, one of the store’s candy representatives happened to be in the co-op when news of the theatre building grabbed

his attention. After visiting with Doll, a new plan emerged.

Doll told how the interested representative, Jeremy Zako, made a proposal to open the theatre and lease the business from the co-op. Zako worked with the co-op manager, bank, local economic development board and the Hazen Chamber of Commerce to finance the business and soon began renovations.

Doll commented, “After looking at the situation, we realized the community needed that movie theatre and we found a way to still expand and keep it open. It’s been a great public relations project for us. We helped Jeremy with the flooring costs and giving him a fair rent.”

For Farmers Union Insurance agents, Tyler Van Bruggen and Kirk Olson, doing business in Valley City means more than just selling policies. Both agents are committed to making their town a better place to live.

Van Bruggen and his wife, Angela, serve as youth leaders for Barnes County and are active volunteers for their church. Tyler works part-time as a referee for area high school football and basketball games. He is an active booster club member for Valley City State University athletics.

Olson also shares a passion for sports. He volunteers to help with VCSU athletic functions and coordinates the youth baseball program. Olson serves as a part-time referee as well, working area football, basketball and baseball games throughout the state.

He and his wife, Amber, are active volunteers in the community, too.

Together, Olson and Van Bruggen have logged countless hours each week for community projects.

It’s a cow’s life

Who knew a cow’s life would be so interesting to so many people? North Dakota Farmers Union member Val Wagner found out fast after starting a Twitter account for one of her heifers.

Wagner explained, “I was up late one night with my kids and stumbled upon a Twitter account about a cat. The account had 50,000 followers. I couldn’t believe it and it gave me the idea to do the same type of thing about one of the cows.”

Val Wagner enjoys taking care of her cows in Dickey County.

Wagner and her husband, Mark, have four boys and live on a farm in Dickey County. She said, “I wanted to help educate people about where their

food comes from. This is just a tool to reach people who have questions and it’s a great way to connect with consumers.”

Social media outlets publish a wide variety of information using Facebook pages, blogs, farm organization sites, videos and virtual tours. The account Wagner set up is called @Cows_Life and has more than 800 fans. She also has a blog called Wag’nTales at wagfarms.wordpress.com. Her farm blog has had over 11,000 hits since September of 2011.

“True farmers and ranchers want consumers to make educated decisions. My main point was for people to see a real farm at work instead of reading about feedlots with a negative connotation. I want people to see that the cattle are taken care of, that the animals are warm, safe and protected. They should know that we call in a veterinarian at 2 a.m. and stay up with a calf for 24 hours if it’s necessary.

That’s what a real cattle operation does,” she said.

On average, the site is updated about once a week although it may fluctuate depending on activity.

“People like to see the calving season and see pictures of the life cycle,” Wagner said. “It’s easier to ask silly questions and to be anonymous. I want to be a good source of information for people who have questions. I’m not getting paid to answer politically correct – it’s just my way of life.”

North Dakota’s Proposed

The Legislative Assembly consists of a Senate and a House of Representatives. The Senate may consist of 40-54 members and the House may consist of 80108 members, depending on the number of senatorial districts.

As of 2009, the state is divided into 47 senatorial districts. Each district elects one Senator and two Representatives.

North Dakota is one of 28 states in which lawmakers are wholly responsible for redrawing maps.

How to keep warm this winter

What’s the perfect remedy to relieve the winter blues?

Gather friends and family, cozy up around a crackling fire and serve up some of Founding Farmers favorite hot beverages!

We begged Executive Pastry Chef Courtney Goldian to share her recipe for our delicious Hot Chocolate and we’re also including our spin on the Hot Toddy, our tea-based Founding Farmers Toddy.

We’ve made it easy – here are our recipes for these perfect cold-weather companions:

FOUNDING FARMERS HOT CHOCOLATE

Serves 4: 2 ½ oz milk chocolate 2 ½ oz dark chocolate (we prefer: 64% bitter chocolate) 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 2 ½ tablespoons cocoa powder 6 ½ fl oz filtered water 19 fl oz whole milk, cold 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Instructions: Combine chocolate in a medium bowl.

In a separate medium bowl, combine cocoa powder and sugar and set aside. Bring water to a boil and pour over chocolate.

Mix until smooth and set aside. Slowly add milk to the cocoa powder-sugar mix, stirring to combine, then transfer mixture to a sauce pot and bring to a simmer. Remove from heat and add chocolate and vanilla.

Blend (can use immersion or traditional kitchen blender) thoroughly, pour into mugs and serve immediately.

The Hot Chocolate can be cooled and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Just re-heat and enjoy!

FOUNDING FARMERS TODDY

(serves 4) 16 fl oz hot brewed tea (we prefer: Chelsea’s Breakfast Tea from T Salon Organic Tea) 1/3 cup local honey 4 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice 5 fl oz cognac 8 whole cloves 4 pinches ground nutmeg 4 cinnamon sticks 4 lemon peel twists Instructions: Add honey, lemon juice and cognac to hot brewed tea and stir until honey has dissolved. Pour into mugs or teacups and garnish each with ground nutmeg, 2 whole cloves, a cinnamon stick and a lemon twist. Serve immediately.

NDFU’s comments to EPA on CAFO reporting rule North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU) sent comments to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding a proposed reporting rule that would be implemented for Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) permitted under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).

If implemented, the rule would require CAFOs to submit basic operational information to EPA so the agency can more effectively address water quality issues associated with discharges of manure pollutants.

The proposed rule is part of a lawsuit settlement agreement reached with the Natural Resources Defense Council, Waterkeeper Alliance, and Sierra Club.

In North Dakota, the State Department of Health oversees the NPDES program for EPA. Approximately 75 large CAFOs are permitted in the state under this 18

program. (Medium and small CAFOs are permitted under state regulations.) Some of the basic information that would be reported under the rule (e.g. name of owner, location of CAFO, date NPDES permit was issued) has already been obtained by the State Department of Health through their permitting process.

NDFU supports giving states with NPDES programs the option to submit information they have already collected to EPA, which would lessen the burden on individual CAFOs. The State Department of Health has indicated their willingness to work with North Dakota producers to gather unknown information (i.e. maximum number of animals confined for 45 days or more; total acreage available for manure application and location of acres) through an annual survey To view NDFU’s complete comments to EPA, go to www.ndfu.org.

Scholarships available to students North Dakota Farmers Union Scholarship

Each year $500 scholarships are awarded to firstyear or undergraduate students enrolled in a secondary educational facility. Applicants must be pursuing a career important to rural America, but not limited to agribusiness, farm operation or production agriculture.

New outreach coordinator hired

Leslie Stevens has been hired to serve as the outreach coordinator for Renville, Bottineau, Ward, McHenry and Pierce counties. She began her duties January 3, 2012.

“I was interested in this position mainly because I wanted to find something I could do from home and be active in the agriculture community,” Stevens said. “I missed the grass roots involvement I was involved with in my previous jobs. I really am looking forward to working with all five county boards and getting to know them and working with the cooperatives in the counties I represent.”

Over the years, Stevens has worked in a variety of marketing and public relations positions including at

Applebees restaurants, North Dakota State Fair, North Dakota Winter Show, 4 Bears Casino and Community Action. In addition, she volunteers with the Miss Rodeo North Dakota organization, Souris Valley United Way Community Building and RSVP Northwest North Dakota Chapter.

In her spare time, Stevens loves to garden, read, travel, spend time with her nieces, nephews and horses.

Stevens is married to Troy, who is a mechanic with Gooseneck Implement in Kenmare. They raise and ride quarter horses in Carpio, N.D. Stevens summarized, “I want to cultivate the relationships with the cooperatives in my counties and encourage my county boards to help encourage more young people to become active with NDFU.”

WILD events set

North Dakota Farmers Union will be hosting four regional Women In Leadership Development (WILD) events across the state in February.

Event registration fee is $20 and includes a lunch or evening meal. This event is open to all North Dakota Farmers Union members.

NAFUS Center, level 2, at Jamestown College in Jamestown on Wednesday, Feb. 8 from 6-9 p.m. (central time) Liz Johnson, the White House Project’s national director, will be the featured keynote speaker. Johnson has coordinated White House Project (WHP) leadership training programs within the Midwest region since 2004. A leader in the design and implementation of rural women’s leadership programs, she has worked and trained women from over 250 cities and towns across the Midwest and even more women from across the country. As a seasoned organizer with over 20 years of community experience, she has dedicated her life to building and advancing women leaders in community and politics.

Her work is characterized by her asset based approach to training and the number and diversity

of women who participate. Since graduating from Grinnell College with a degree in Political Science, she has also served as a Program Officer for the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota, and as a Legislative Consultant and staff for several non profit organizations. Johnson is the recipient of the Minnesota Housing Partnership Right to Housing Award and The Minnesota Women’s Press Changemaker Award for her work to advance women leaders in Minnesota.

Johnson is also one of the key leaders in an award winning collaboration with the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service and the Women, Food and Agriculture Network called Plate to Politics. This collaboration seeks to inspire, inform and equip more women leaders from the healthy food and farming movement to advance their leadership. She lives in Duluth, Minnesota situated on the largest freshwater lake in the world.

Learning outside the classroom Fourth grade students throughout the state of North Dakota are learning how their food gets from the farmer’s fields to the grocery store shelves during special “Living Ag” classes. North Dakota Farmers Union outreach coordinators provide instruction for the program. NDFU helps sponsor and operate the classroom across the state, with games and displays showing the step-by-step process.

The Living Ag Classroom has taught over 16,000 students, teachers and parents learn about the food chain since its inception. The Living Ag Classroom illustrates the production and distribution of our food along with the many by-products of crops and animals that are raised in North Dakota. This year’s classes began with the KMOT Ag Show in Minot on Jan. 25 and 26. Upcoming sessions include the KFYR Ag Expo in Bismarck on Feb. 14-15 and in Fargo on Mar. 5-9.

Beef board appointed by Vilsack Agriculture Secretary Thomas J. Vilsack appointed Patrick Becker of Selfridge, N.D. to join the Cattlemen’s Beef Promotion and Research Board. A total of 29 new appointees from across the country will serve threeyear terms.

Becker was nominated by the Independent Beef Association of North Dakota Patrick Becker (IBAND) and has served on the Sioux County Farmers Union board of directors for many years.

Becker commented, “I wanted to become more involved and am looking forward to representing the beef producers of North Dakota.”

The board oversees the collection of $1-per-head

on all cattle sold in the United States, and $1-per-head equivalent on imported cattle, beef and beef products.

In addition, the board contracts with established national, non-profit, industry-governed organizations to implement programs of promotion, research, consumer information, industry information, foreign marketing and producer communications.

“These appointees represent a cross-section of the beef industry and I am confident that beef producers and importers of cattle, beef and beef products will be well-served by them,” said Vilsack.

The 103-member board is authorized by the Beef Promotion and Research Act of 1985. Vilsack selected the appointees nominated by beef, veal, dairy and importers certified organizations. USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service monitors operation of the board.

Berg retires from Watford City Co-op

Since 1969, Milana Berg has worked at the Farmers Union Oil Co. in Watford City, N.D. She said goodbye Jan. 1 after 42 years of service.

Berg started working in the sales department for Farmers Union when her oldest daughter was just two months old. Now, her own children have grown and for the first time in her life, she’ll be able to play grandma without her work schedule to interfere.

“I love being with my kids and grandkids. When my husband Kenny says, ‘Let’s go’ – I’ll be ready to go, now,” Berg said.

A retirement party was held in Watford City and close to 100 people attended the reception. “I’ll really miss my co-workers and the patrons,” she added. “I had a rewarding job.”

As an office assistant, Berg worked with many customers and on a variety of projects for the company. Reflecting back on the years, Berg said the process of converting from pencil and paper to 26

the computer was the most challenging task. “I always felt good when the auditor would come and say I had done a good job. It helps keep you going. It helps to be positive in the working world,” Berg concluded.

Footholds to a brighter future The history of agriculture dates back thousands of years and its development has been driven by different climates, cultures, and technologies. Farming relies on techniques to expand and maintain the land suitable for raising crops and livestock.

However, we just had the unique opportunity to learn about going beyond that basic definition. We learned about the latest in precision agriculture during a summit held at our state office in Jamestown. Over 250 people attended the event and it was exciting to hear about the new technology that will assist family farmers and ranchers to lower their input costs, protect the soil and maximize profits.

We learned that precision agriculture is not merely about connecting to satellite information.

It is a methodology that, if implemented successfully, integrates three key elements: (1) grower/agronomist information and insight about her/his crop fields and plant species, (2) technology and (3) management practice capable of integrating findings and implementing decisions.

The year 2012 marks the 85th anniversary of incorporation for North Dakota Farmers Union. Think back and imagine if you were a farmer 85 years ago.

Horses and oxen usually pulled the plow. In fact, our organization uses the plow, rake and hoe as a symbol of Farmers Union.

Times have certainly changed. Tractors are now equipped with air conditioning, sound-guard cabs, cushioned seats and the latest gadgets that can steer, regulate and collect data about our land.

Research has taught us about soil type and conditions. Agriculture is a science.

For decades, our organization has continued to stand up for family farmers and ranchers. Strong communitybased cooperatives, progressive legislative agendas and ongoing education are testaments to our foundation. As we look forward to the next 85 years, we will see even more advancement in agriculture and continued leadership development in rural areas. The best is yet to come – our accomplishments of the past are just footholds to a brighter future.
